Queen Mum remembered as patron and friend by locally based charity Sadness at the death of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother on 30 March was felt especially by staff at Bible Society in Westlea who lost a much loved patron of 59 years. Her only official engagement in Swindon was to open the Society's new headquarters at the Delta Business Park in May 1986. The Queen Mother was a strong Christian believer and supporter of Bible Society's mission to make the Bible available to people worldwide. Bible Society's recently appointed chief executive James Catford, who was one of The Queen Mother at Bible Society in 1986 the many representatives of charities supported by the Queen Mother at her funeral in Westminster Abbey, said, "having a much loved figure who was a strong Christian as patron helped to give a high profile to Bible Society's work the world over; she will be truly missed. Her visit to the Society in May 1986 was the scene of much celebration for staff and the people of Swindon alike."

Cabinet supports community calls to reduce dangers at Corton Crescent West Swindon parents are overjoyed by a Swindon Council cabinet decision on 10 April to have a pedestrian controlled crossing installed between Westlea and the West Swindon Centre. Astute lobbying achieved cross party agreement that road traffic accident statistics presented to the committee did not reflect the need or nature of the dangers on the ground and the councillors opposed the officer recommendation that Corton Crescent did not merit a crossing in the next financial year. The council only has enough money to fund seven road safety schemes and Corton Crescent was ranked eleventh while Tewkesbury Cross roundabout (next to Pizza Hut 800 metres away) was rated at fifth. However parents argued that pedestrians have no choice but to cross Corton Crescent to and from the West Swindon Centre. During term time hundreds of children from Westlea school use the road

to walk to swimming lessons at the Link Centre. Drivers regularly ignore teachers and volunteer parents who supervise the crossing to save a few moments by driving around them. The Link has highlighted the dangers at Corton Crescent since Shaun Shirley from Toothill ran into the road on 17 January 2001. Parents were pictured in the March 2002 edition collecting nearly 3,000 petition signatures calling for a safe crossing. Councillors at the West area panel on 7 March recommended the cabinet should swop Corton Crescent for Tewkesbury Cross.

So long to silly status. Now let's be a city! Swindon Council's city aspirations have been dashed by the gove rnment. The decision came through just before the April edition went to press. We have always expressed scepticism about the official bids to the Queen to be declared a city, the first before the turn of the millennium and now for the jubilee. The benefits were never adequately explained and the people of Swindon were never involved in the proposals.

Moreover, the whole process of becoming a city took on a medieval nature, with each town extolling its virtues to the monarch for recognition on high. There was something silly and even insulting about the whole business. Meanwhile t^ ^ some local media tried to convince people that becoming a city was good for them whilst different towns sniped at each (A&(-RjtGj ooa others' merits With a mounting range of problems in Swindon, not least the disastrous Ofsted report on the way the council runs education, nobody was really surprised that city status was not forthcoming. As we wrote in the April 2000 Link, the town's rapid expansion has created a sense of discontinuity compounded by cutbacks in essential services and grants to voluntary organisations. Freshbrook youngster recognised for his help When a list of names were read out at the annual evening dedicated to volunteers who help at Freshbrook Community Centre at the end of March, thirteen year old James Shaw thought he had been left out. But that was not the case as James was selected to receive the Young Volunteer of the Year 2001 award for his help every week at the centre's Sunday night bingo session. "I was really surprised to be given a certificate for helping; I thought somebody had forgotten me," said James. "I've been coming to bingo for three years and now I run the raffle with my mum and my friend Toni Pellicci. "I like being with the older people who come to the club. They're nice to me, like grandparents." Mum, Janet, said James was 'chuffed to bits' to be selected to receive the award and bingo club member Lily Wylie said he thoroughly deserved it. The Swindon Sanctuary is one of the first of its kind in the country and is a partnership between health services and the Wiltshire Constabulary. It provides a place of safety following assault, where victims can be examined by a police surgeon within a medical environment and receive support and advice to help them through the process of recovery. Miss Neville was shown the ultra clean, hospital operating theatre quality examination suites, complemented by a shower room, by practice partner and police sur-

geon Dr Peter Crouch. She also met practice staff who have volunteered to open the surgery whenever necessary and provide support to the victim and family members. Roman ruins to be discussed on 8 May The long process of interpreting the Roman complex in North Swindon has started and environmental planners Land Use Consultants have been commissioned to hold discussions in the community to establish the best way to display the information. The site on Groundwell Ridge at Ash Brake was discovered in 1996 when house builders started to excavate close to what were thought to be medieval earthworks. A survey confirmed that they were of Roman origin and the site, now under Swindon Borough Council's ownership has been designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Maritta Boden from Land Use Consultants said that Swindon Council and English Heritage are at the beginning of an exciting and long term process of exploring the opportunities for the site, whilst protecting it as an archaeological resource. "The feasibility study has been commissioned to look at how to best raise public awareness about the site, develop its potential as an educational resource, explore opportunities to further investigate the archaeology in a non-destructive manner and integrate the interpretation of the site within the council's remit for developing and expanding their current museums and cultural resources. "The site being within a housing area has to be treated sensitively.

Nothing firm has been decided about how the findings should be displayed; we're at an early stage of gathering information and involving the community is an important part of the process." The investment in the county's biggest nature conservation charity will help new homeowners and visitors to the area to enhance the environment of the planned 5,500 home urban village development off Thamesdown Drive. Efforts will focus on protecting wildlife such as the endangered great crested newt, and on helping new home buyers turn their plots of land into environmentally friendly havens for birds, butterflies, insects and other wildlife. Fifteen miles of hedgerow within Priory Vale have been preserved and a network of newt ponds and barriers along roadsides are already in place. Leaflets on these topics will be available to new arrivals and information boards are to be placed on the 16 acre ancient hay meadow, designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), home to the protected green veined orchid and other species. A long-term management plan is in place to maintain the meadow and the wildlife it supports. Also planned are guided walks, and informative talks. An Environmental Impact Assessment three years ago as a condition of receiving planning permission set the guidelines on the NSDC to incorporate existing wildlife into plans for the area. Patricia

Through an ongoing commitment to the environment we hope to both preserve existing wildlife habitats and also to improve the wildlife value of the area for the benefit of all." Swinging & swaying, there'll be dancing in the streets Take to the centre of Swindon over the jubilee weekend, 1 and 2 June, and see a dazzling array of international street theatre and music free of charge. Featuring acts from Brazil, Tanzania, the Caribbean and India, as well as the UK, the festival is shaping up to be the biggest community event Swindon has seen in a long time. Kicking off the festival on Saturday 1 June at 10.30am, the carnival parade sets off from Regent Circus to create a noisy, friendly riot of vibrating colour and music down to the plaza outside Debenhams where 17 performers from Estrella del Norte and dance company Acordo Piva will portray a history of Brazilian music and dance from slavery times of the 1 8th century to the full-on modern day Rio Carnival atmosphere. The carnival parade theme is Trees for Life, a spectacular celebration through carnival costume and music of forests of the world and Swindon's own Community Forest. Twelve schools in the town. as well as Swindon College, Swindon Dance and community groups are designing costumes and rehearsing to take part. Giant mythical forest creatures on stilts will stalk Regent Street, birds of paradise will surprise and delight and a wandering forest will meander to sounds of the peoples' of the forest. The site is now occupied by Tregoze Primary School and it is hard to imagine the once elegant

house and spacious gardens where the local rector and his family lived. Built in 1830 to replace a dilapidated rectory which stood beside Lydiard House, the 19th Century building was fondly remembered by Mrs North whose father Rev. Willetts took up the living in 1937, when this particular Union Jack must have been consigned to history

and quietly folded away. The Lydiard rectory was a sub-

stantial building with a large flagstone hall and flowing staircase. Mrs North recalls her first impression as being 'almost like a glimpse of heaven' a home in the country with uninterrupted views across the fi elds to Swindon. There were rose beds and lawns,

a grass tennis court and a round summerhouse with athatched roof

old mulberry tree stood on the main lawn and a pa rt ly walled kitchen garden contained a green house with peach and fig trees beside. An orchard, paddock and spinney provided further enjoyment for the Willetts who had moved from Hull. In 1996 Mrs North reflected sadly on the loss of the rectory and countryside surrounding it but added: 'there is a school where the spinney and entrance gates of the long drive used to be. I am pleased that this field has been used fora school. I wonder if the aspen trees were left? Even on the hottest, stillest days the leaves of the aspen trees would move and rustle, giving the feeling of coolness.'

Sea red in support of whales & dolphins Walkers wearing red will be striding around Swindon's Coate Water on 26 May to raise funds for the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS) so that they can continue to campaign for the protection of whales and dolphins, one of 66 such sponsored events taking place on the same day around the UK. The International Whaling Commission meets in Japan in late May and may decide to resume commercial whaling. The WDCS Sea Red campaign aims to continue opposition to commercial exploitation and wants the 1986 ban on whale hunting to be maintained. If killing resumes, the sea will literally turn red with blood says walk organiser Victoria Reinthal. ' WDCS opposes any return to commercial whaling because there is no kind way to kill a whale - it is murder of mammals at sea. Many

populations have been hunted to near extinction whilst others are having to cope with increasing environmental threats and they may not be able to cope with further or renewed whaling. " Many countries continue to ignore regulations, which showsthat whaling cannot be controlled. A staggering 600,000 dolphins, porpoises and small whales have been killed over the past 20 years in addition to the thousands of large whales that Japan has hunted despite the ban on commercial whaling adopted by the IWC in 1986.

Japan wants this lifted and is seeking more and more whales, even though it has trouble selling the meat it already gets." Greendown School year 9 under 14s netball team were placed seventh out of nine in their pool games at the Daily Telegraph national finals in Manchester on 16 March. Many of the other schools in the final had a large number of county players in their teams, so the girls were not too disappointed with their performance. "It was a great experience and a challenge playing against teams from around England," said captain Chrissie Munro. "We're planning to get there again next year.

Meet the Moonwalkers at Sainsburys Over 200 women and a few men in Swindon Twin Peaks set out once again to walk a marathon overnight through the streets of London on 11 May wearing bras in aid of Breakthrough Breast Cancer and the Bristol Cancer Help Centre. This year the Mayor of Swindon David Cox will be joining them. Over bank holiday weekend, 4 May, 8am to 6pm, and 5 May, 10am to 4pm, Twin Peaks walkers will be collecting cash to boost their sponsorship at Sainsburys, Bridgemead. Swindon Twin Peaks have had the largest team from any town in the Moonwalk and have raised around £70,000 over the last two years.

This is one in a series of 30k cycle rides around the country dedicated to raising money specifically for research into cancers which effect men. Cycleforlife is the fundraising arm of CRUK Dads & Lads awareness campaign focusing on testicular and prostate cancer. Dog owners scoop a tonne of poop per week Swindon pet owners deposit nearly a tonne of dog droppings into the 213 dog waste bins located around the town, thereby removing it from pedestrian routes and hopefully reducing the risk to children from toxicara worms and the severe illness they can cause. Whilst dog owners are using the bins with enthusiasm, there have been instances of vandals emptying the contents and throwing the mess about, risking serious infection to themselves. Councillors - what have they ever done for us? In response to a letter by Terry Iles

From Robin Tingey, Freshbrook I have to respond to the letter in the April Link criticizing councillors for not getting the trees in front of Freshbrook Community Centre cut down. Firstly I like the trees, but if the roots threaten the community centre foundations then action should be taken. However, my main point is that the best way to get change is not apathy - not voting - but by standing as a candidate or voting for a councillor who will do the desired. I was a candidate six years ago with the Lib Dems, though my views have changed since then. It is not that hard to stand as a candidate. Perhaps the writer could stand as a 'Chop the Trees' candidate? From Ms P Lucas, Haydon Wick With reference to Terry Iles, I am not surprised the councillors don't take any notice if you are prone to such exaggeration as to call one or two trees a forest. Provided the trees are pruned on the lower sections so as to not obstruct views of traffic or walkways I think the council has better things to spend its money on. The trees are infinitely more attractive than buildings and should be left well alone to obscure such urban sprawl. For goodness sake lets preserve what little greenery we have.

About half of the people we spoke to had some knowledge of Fairtrade principles and a few were really enthusiastic. Knowing that the producers of the coffee beans or tea leaves are receiving a living wage for their work is a real incentive to buy the products they said. As local fair traders we were very appreciative of the co-operation given us by Asda's events coordinator, and also of the staff who

helped to set out the stand. Fairtrade is here to stay and does not happen only in two weeks in March. Make it an all year feature of your shopping baskets. New West team leader appointed An advert in the Church Times asking Is God calling you? attracted the attention of Rev Steven Skinner at the end of last year. Many months later he is to be licensed and inducted as rector and team leader of the West Swindon partnership churches at Holy Trinity Shaw on 29 May. Currently a team rector in West Carlisle, Rev Skinner and his wife Jane, also ordained as a priest, will be moving closer to family in the south. "The ecumenical nature of the church in West Swindon and the opportunities to bring God into people's lives attracted us," said Steven. " Outwardly the area looks impersonal, but we're impressed by its design and also how many good, kind, caring people we've already met; we're looking forward to joining the congregation." A bright future for Prospect, thanks to you On behalf of everyone at Prospect Hospice I am delighted to report a very successful 21" birthday year and to have this opportunity to thank those readers who have contributed. In these 21 years Prospect has continually developed and expanded its services, support and care for patients and their families. The service now includes an in-patient unit, day hospice, and a Prospect Macmillan nursing team as well as a training and education facility. The service is completely free for patients and their families in our community, which stretches north of Swindon to Highworth, south to Tidworth, east to Ramsbury and west to Lyneham, covering a population of around 300,000. At Prospect all patients and carers are valued as unique individuals, irrespective of race, creed or culture. We believe that people with a life threatening illness should have the right to live their life fully, with dignity and comfort. In the financial year just ended we were facing a large deficit budget. But thanks to the generosity of our local community we hope to be very close to breaking even. Looking forward to this current year our costs are ÂŁ2.4 million. After significant grants from the Health Authority and Social Services we still need to raise approximately ÂŁ1.7 million from the community that we serve. That is why I ask each and every one of you to consider how you could help those who are facing a life-threatening illness, by helping Prospect Hospice to care for them. No matter how large or small your contribution is it will be valued and received with gratitude. I do hope that every reader of The Link feels a great sense of pride in Prospect and the service it provides. This hospice is here because of you - and your continued support for its work. Whether you are a volunteer, a box holder, a lottery member, or supporter, your contribution is invaluable to the continued provision of this service.
