Golden Oldies play for youth 60s concert to launch Midwinter Trust for young people in West Swindon Three top bands from the 1960s will be performing in June in aid of West Swindon's young people. The Tremeloes, Mike Pender's Searchers and The Merseybeats are booked for a charity concert at Link Centre on Sunday 14 June in aid of the new Ricky Midwinter Memorial Trust. The trust is being set up in memory of the area's longest serving councillor and will aim to help the youth of the area. Other well known Swindon artists and local celebrities are being invited to visit the concert. Gilbert O'Sullivan, who lived two doors from Ricky in their youth, and Justin Haywood of the Moody Blues have been contacted.

1,800 tickets are now on sale. If all are sold, the trust will benefit by about £10,000.

Oak tree planted in rememberance Ricky Midwiriterwas remembered at a special assembly of children in the playground at Westlea School on the last day of term when his widow May and daughter Phihipa planted an oak tree in his memory. Headteacher Neil Griffiths told the children that Ricky had said that they and the school were the most important part of his life after his family. Ricky was a Governor since before the school opened in 1983. The tree is the centrepiece of a garden ofrememberancededicaled to Ricky planted by parents and children. May said, "It is something he would have liked very much."

Policemen are back on the stitts in Toothill and Freshbrook following a review of police operations which came into force on 1 April. PC Anthony Osman covers Toothill and PC Mark Cams is responsible for Freshbrook in a big effort by Wiltshire Constabulary to improve and strengthen community relationships. Although 'Beat Officers' have been nominally involved ata neighbourhood level in the past, the same officers also carried a full load of Police duties and were used for a wide range of other jobs as well as being sent away on courses. The result has been the often heard complaint that people never see a Policeman unless there's trouble. Now, having carried out consultation meetings and analysed questionnaires, the Wiltshire Constabulary is making a much stronger commitment to community policing. Acting Inspector Joy Robertson, theOfficer responsible forWes t Swindon, said, "the new scheme of management has the long term aim of allowing Constables to ree ally get to know the community and for local people to get to know theirPoliceman. Occasionally Iwill call on them for other duties, but I will have to have justification and give a reason to the Constable concerned. 'We recognise that the public wants to see more Policemen on the beat; they provide continuity, security and public identification. It's the best way to build trust and respect on all sides. Residents will be able to meet 'their' Policeman on the strtets and he will be going into local schools to meet children. Continued on page 2

Bike safety morning at MGM A bicycle safety and security morning is planned for Saturday 30 May outside the MGM Cinema at the Shaw Ridge Leisure Park. To coincide with the Saturday morning childrens film 'BM)( Bandits, officers from Swindon Police will be present to security stamp bicycles and to give safety advice to young bike riders. A miniature cycle course will be laid out in the car park so that the police officers can advise on cycle proficiency. Also attending will be the Bike Doctor, the new mobile bike main-

tenance service set up by Phil Mitchell from Shaw, who will carry out safety checks. And for people interested in a new bike Express Cycles of Swindon will have a display on show. The event takes place between 11am and 1pm and is open to anybody with a bicycle, whether they are attending the matinee or not. It's important for bikes to be stamped, just in case they are stolen and need to be identified and the chance to talk to the police and bike maintenance experts will be a good one.

linda Green is 40 years old, married with three children and lives in Nine Elms. She was born in Swindon and has lived in West Swindon for 13 years, initially Toothill. She helps run a family business based at Westmead, manufacturing components for telecom industry. Linda believes issues need resolving by commonscnsc discussion and consensus not conflict and confrontation controlled by party dogma and national issues. By living and working in the community, she is aware of local needs, and believes more effort needs to be spent in listening to people's problems, small and large, and consulting people on larger local issues.

Voting Green is a Vote for the Future. The politics of economic growth and expansion have already led to global warming and holes in the ozone layer. Chemical farming and industry are polluting the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat. Only the Green Party seriously challenges the view of more and more economic growth putforward by other political parties, and advocates policies sufficiently radical to halt this destruction. Only voting Green will put the environment back on the political agenda, ensuring a bright future for all life on this beautiful but fragile planet.

As one of the liberal Democrat Candidates selected to stand for Toothill Ward, I pledge to campaign in support of our manifesto pledges for Swindon such as the expansion of the current recycling scheme and the introduction of a pensioners' bus pass scheme and Thamesdown residents' discount leisure card. If elected, as both local resident and local councillor, I pledge to defend local amenities and services such as the 'village' centres and Link Centre. On a personal note, Jam a professional civil servant and live in the Eastleaze area of the ward.

Mike Rutland is 48 years old, and has lived in Swindon since 1984. He is married with three grown-up children and works for British Bail as an Inter-City Resources Controller. Locally he believes better public transport, cycle ways, more community-policing is required, and that councillors should be prepared to listen to people's views. By living in the area, he is aware of the problems which occur in all the more recently built areas of Swindon, and would like to help in solving them.

Video choice at great Toothill's new video shop is offering the widest selection of films at the lowest prices to be found in West Swindon. Choice Videos which opened on Good Friday has 1,000 titles in stock and they all cost E2 to hire, even brand new releases, and there's no membership. Another feature is the fact that the shop at Toothill Village Centre is open for over 14 hours a day, from 9.30am to 12 midnight, 7 days a week. Proprietor Alan Jennings from Middleleaze said there had been a good response since opening without any advertising. 'People have heard about our prices and the late opening and they've been coming here from a wide area," he said. "We hope to hire out video games which many youngsters go for. They cost £40 to buy, so renting a game at £3 for two nights will be a good way of testing them out." He added that the fresh hot popcorn on sale at Choice Video was also a popular attraction for visitors to the village centre. • The Toothill shop unit could have been let as abetting shop earlier this year before the late councillor Ricky Midwinter demanded that Thamesdown Council look fora use which had greater community appeal.

Parents and children turned out for a spring dig and plant at Westlea School on Saturday 4 April. The school already has several outdoor areas which have been developed to help with the curriculum like a herb garden and a pond. Over the next few years a pirate island and pirate ship, play house, maze, orchard and a tunnel woven from willow trees will be built. A jogging trackaround the school grounds and kick walls for footballers are also planned in a project which is expected to cost over £4,000. Whilst some of the volunteers maintained existing plants beds,others set about building a pond and making a start on the Ricky Midwinter Memorial Garden. Pre-school education at the Jigsaw Day Nursery on Windmill Hill for 3-5's

After School cooks Why not come and try the culinary expertise of the members of the Westlea After School Club? Interesting and strange concoctions, the contents of which are known only to the assorted 5 to 11 year old members of the club, will be available for intrepid attendees of the club's Annual General Meeting. Cups of steaming hot tea and coffee will be available to dilute the effects of the more solid refreshments. All members of the public are welcome to participate in the proceedings. Westlea After School Club is open to all children of the Westlea community who attend Westlea School. It aims to help working mums and dads by providing an interesting place for children to play until parents get home from work. The AGM is being held at the club building at Westlea School on 13 May, 7pm to 8pm and everyone is more than welcome to attend.

Annual Meeting for Shaw Residents The Annual General Meeting of the Shaw Residents' Association takes place on Tuesday 5 May, 7.45pm in ShawCommunity Centre, Ramleaze Drive. All residents are invited to listen to reports of the Association's activities over the last year and to raise

points of community concern for the oganisation to deal with. Another fun day is being planned for 5 September at Shaw Village Centre and offers of help will be welcomed. The election of officers and a new committee will take place at the meeting.

Tight fits raise cash The 77 children at the Upper Shaw Playgroup were given the challenge of fittingas many items as they could into a plastic film container during February and March, whilst raising cash through sponsorship of each item. Four year old Nathan Hayes from Shaw came out the winner of a big easter egg for somehow fitting 132 items into his container, whilst Bhavika MistryfromRamleazewon a prize forraising100 forthegroup. A total of £690 was raised by the children and their parents for group equipment, materials and activities.

Playgroup benefits from effort A new playgroup set to open in September is richer by over £1,000, thanks to the efforts of Jackie Wozniak who has been battling away for a year to get it off the ground. Jackie set herself the task of swimming 10 lengths of the Link Centre pool, skating 20 laps around the rink and then running a mile to Shaw Village Inn on 7 April. The sponsorship money, a complimentary pass from the Link Centre and a collec-

tion around the pub will all help to equip Sunny Smiles playgroup which will meet at the Roughmoor Social Hall. We learnt how to cope with the stresses in our daily lives without having to resort to medication. Our Beauty Evening on 23 March was very well attended. We enjoyed being pampered by the Clarins beauticians and we raised funds for a donation to the Deaf Childrens Society. At our meeting on 13 April we were given a very interesting slide show on Canada by Mrs Wheatley. On 18 May we shall be holding a friendly meeting when the members will be chattingabout their own hobbies and interests (with demonstrations we hope). All visitors will be welcome to join us. The 550 children at Freshbrook School spent one minute each bouncing on an inflatable at the end of March in order to raise money for school equipment and activities. Play space security needed There's a chance that Freshbrook Community Centre's playgroup may have to close if it's children cannot have safe access to its secure outside play space. The Children Act requires the local Social Services to register playgroups annually and the community centre management committee fears that unless Thamesdown Council repairs two gates into the play area at the rear of the building permission to continue might not be forthcoming. Centre chairperson Terry Isles said, "The gates have been repeatedly vandalised and repaired by the Council. One is broken now, the other has been repaired but the wood has swollen and itwon'tfit. Even so, a man came along and painted it." Thamesdown's Community Centres Officer Denis Onley said he was trying to get the problem sorted out quickly now that the budget for the new financial year was available. "Vandals have destroyed the gates on several occasions, so we're looking at replacing them with barriers that can be kept inside the building and used when the children go out to play."

Junior club restarts After a long lay-off, Freshbrook's Saturday morning junior club FACES reopens on Saturday 2 May in the community centre. The club had to stay shut after its Christmas breakbecause of a lack of volunteers to supervise all the activities. But enough adults have come forward to keep the club going over the summer months. FACES caters for 7 to 12 year olds between lOam and 12 noon for a morning of arts and crafts inside the community centre and football on the school field next door. Special events and trips are also planned over the next few months. The cost is just SOp and youngsters should just turn up and join in. 1992 A Year to Remember This year is the 350th Anniversary of the start of the English Civil War. One who will be contributing to the celebrations around the country is Owen Collierfrom Godolphin Close, Freshbrook who is a member of The Sealed Knot Society which will be taking part in some major real life' events to mark the outbreak of the War. Here he describes the re-enactment of a battle and tells you how to join the Society. The sergeants shout "Have a care". The drums beat; we are all at the Order, ready to 'advance pike and shoulder musket'. The noise of the artillery is deafening as we move forward peering through the clouds of white smoke from the cannon fire. The tassels ofourarmourclanks noisily as we march along. Hopefully the barrage of artillery fire will soften some of the front ranks of the opposing army.

The Puritan Preacher urges the army of Parliament on, yelling "There's God's work to be done this day". Shouts of "London and liberty", "No Popery", "A pox on the King", "No Bishops" can be heard above thecannon drums as theariny advances. My heart beats faster as we march to the front line. The Musket block is loaded at the advance, they march forward. The front rank kneel, the back row stands as they are ordered to "Take aim" and "Give fin". They disappear for a few seconds until the smoke drifts away. We observe the volley has been successful and has taken out a few soldiers in the opposing army. But wait! Panic sets into the Parliamentary Musket block. The Royalist Cavalry are charging straight at them, hoping to cut them down. Suddenly the Pike block come alive as the Musketeers, the Ensign carrying the colours, Officers and camp followers run into the centre of the Pikeblock ThePike men act quickly splitting ranks to form a complex defensive circle of 18 foot poles around the fleeing people. The ground trembles with the thunder of the hooves of the charging horses as they are forced into a terrific gallop. As they race toward us, I glance nervously around the block. I sincerely hope there are no gaps theycan gallop into. If they get

cavalry charge straight for the Royalist horses. I heave a big sigh of relief as the Royalist cavalry break off the engagement and bolt for cover. Have you ever wanted to know who your local councillor is, who is responsible for your street lighting or where you can register a birth or death? In other words, when you have needed to contact or make use of a council service, have you been able to easily pin-point the department and person responsible? Well, Wiltshire County Council haslauncheda newcomputer-based information system which aims to make the council's services and staff more accessible to the public. Appropriately it's called ACCESS (Automated County Council Enquiry Support Service) and is available at West Swindon Library and 23 other libraries across the county. ACCESS utilizes the library service's existing computer system and also includes the extensive local clubs and groups file, which was already available on computer, and other local statutory bodies such as Thamesdown District Council. To obtain the information you need callat the enquiry desk in West Swindon Library and we will be pleased to search the ACCESS database for you. Pick up an explanatory leaflet from the ACCF-SS display boards next time you're in, or make a point of dropping in to the library when you visit the Link Centre. Exhibition The May exhibition at West Swindon Library is entitled 'Chalk and Flint'. Here is an extract from the exhibition blurb. "The chalk dominates the Wiltshire countryside forming the downs and the plains which the county is famous for. The flints from the chalk have for thousands of years provided the rawmaterials formans' first tools. 'Just how did the chalk form, what is it made of and when was it deposited? How are the flints formed and why do they occur in such unusual shapes? "This travelling exhibition, from Wiltshire Library & Museum Service explores the geology and history of the chalk and flint." The exhibition runs from2Mayuntil 28 May.

Companies back toy library A toy library is helping childminders provide interesting and stimulating care for the children in their care. NESS, the Nine Elms, Eastleaze, Shaw and Sparcells Childminders Support Group started the toy library with donations of cash and vouchers from local companies which allows childminders to supplement their own collection of toys from a collection of 50 more chosen for their educational and entertainment value. 12 was donated a further £100 was received from the GWRChristmas Appeal at a presentation on

Sunday 26 April. The companies which have helped out are: Triang, Water Research Council. R.P. May meeting for local people to lay new foundations for the West Swindon Family and Community Project After ten good years under the wing of National Childrens Home, the West Swindon Family and Community Project is taking up the challenge of self-management, truly becoming a project run by the community for the community. The project exists to respond to the needs of families living in West Swindon, focusing primarily on Toothill and Freshbrook. It aims to provide support and encouragement to parents and children - particularly to those facing times of stress and hardship such as we all encounter - through meeting and sharingwith others, an advice point, advocacy, holidays and outings.

Lace for all A new lace making group started in April and will continue meeting on the third Saturday of the month in Freshbrook Community Centre. The sessions lasts from lOam and 4pm and costs ÂŁ1, which includes refreshments. The next meeting takes place on Saturday 16 May. The new group is open to experienced lace makers and those who would like to learn. There will be a ÂŁ6 annual subscription after the second meeting. Sports shop goes out of business Westside Sports at Shaw Village Centre has gone out of business after struggling to survive in the face of mounting pressure. Proprietor Tom Taylor of Freshbrook said a number of reasons had forced him to shut down after trading for 12 months. The recession was obviously a factor, but being let down by apart-

ner and a burglery in March pushed the business to the brink. The final straw came in early April when he was refused permission to sub-let the upper floor of the shop to spread the cost of paying the rent. Anne Hall reports on a recent weekend for local church members

Being a Christian in everyday life' was the themeofaweekend workout arranged by the five churches of the West Swindon Local Ecumenical Project. A group of thirteen students from Trinity College, Bristol (a theological College) led a day conference at Shaw Church on the Saturday and preached at local churches on the Sunday. The conference participants were divided into groups roughly corresponding to each individual's occupation. Housewives and mums, people who work in the community, those who do paid work, the retired and the unemployed were invited to consider the positives and negatives of their particular circumstances. For example, the unemployed and retired felt they had more time to listen to people and to God whilst negatively they sometimes experienced lack of status, loss of confidence and depression. And what with bikes costing anything between £100 and £500, they're a big investment which should be looked after. Now the problem is being solved by Phil Mitchell who is setting up in business to bring bike repairs to you in his mobile repair workshop. He's going to be Swindon's Bike Doctor. Zoe needs sponsorship to get even better West Swindon ice skater Zoe Jones could have her ambitions thwarted if her parents do not find a sponsor to help her develop her talents. Twelve year old Zoe has shown amazing ability since she started skating 6 years ago and is presently a member of the British Olympic novice squad. In the lastyear she has been placed in the top three of the 15 competitions she has entered, winning ten of them. In the autumn she won the first ever British novice championships and now competes against skaters two to four years older than her. In March, at three weeks notice, Zoe was one of three British skaters to take part in a competition held in the new country of Slovenia, formerly a part of Yugoslavia. Her parents were a bit concerned about travelling to the troubled Balkans, but getting Zoe a passport quickly proved the most difficult part of the trip. Her mother Christine Jones said, 'We were a bit worried about going to what was Yugoslavia, but the British skaters travelled as a group and the Slovenian people looked after us wonderfully. They were so pleased to see skaters from the West." Tiny Zoe took third place against 14 to 18 year olds from Slovenia, Poland, Bulgaria and Croatia. If Zoe is to continue improving and stand a chance of achieving her goal of competing in a future Olympic Games, she has to have extra training. Her parents David and Christine have been wilting to local and national companies in a search for sponsorship, but without success. The costs involved are huge, with ice time at the Link Centre costing £20 and tuition costing £50 weekly, with extra classes in preparation for competitions. Then there are boots at £250 a pair, costumes, travelling to competitions and accommodation.

"The cost is high but we want to help Zoe as much as we can," said herdad David. "Sponsorship would not reduce our commitment, it would go towards extra lessons which she needs to get better. We meet young skaters around the country who are getting help but the lack of support from the local council here and the lack of response from companies is disheartening. Zoe just seems to get better and better and we want to develop her potential as far as possible." One local company did help recently when Christine's employer Farepak Hampers from Westlea paid for her to accompany Zoe to Slovenia. Week for the environment Environment Week between 16 and 23 May will be marked in Thamesdown by several events. On 18 May prizes will be awarded to the schools which have collected the largest numberof cans ma twelve month long recycling experiment. Locally Westlea, Windmill 1-1111 and Greendown Schools have taken part. Salt Way,OliverTomkins and Brook Field are also taking part next year. A similar can collecting scheme amongst Swindon's companies will be launched with moneyraised from recycling cans saved at the workplace distributed amongst the schools in the project.

Plan for recycling

During the week Thamesdown Council's draft Recycling Plan will be launched which sets out how Thamesdown intends to meet the Government set target of recycling 25% of total waste. A questionnaire will also be circulated with the draft plan to find out how much people recycle at present and what they will be prepared to do in the future. From Mrs Jane Kirk, Secretary Sparklers Playgroup, Shaw We arealso a small community run playgroup who rely almost totally on donations from local companies and fund raising by parents. Mrs Bell's letter in the April Link regarding fund raising was all too familiar to me as a member of the Sparklers Playgroup Committee. We also face the ever growing problems of decreasing numbers of children, higher running and equipment costs and difficulty in keeping fundraising efforts original and fun! Itis a very big myth to think playgroups keep fund raising to add money to their alreadyburstingbankaccount. Itis quite simply the only way to keep the door open for 3 to 5 year olds in our area. Perhaps the way forward would be for more liaison between playgroups in the West Swindon area, possibly joint fundraising efforts, i.e. fetes, car boot and jumble sales. How about the idea of equipment lending or swapping agreements between playgroups? (thereby keeping toys, books and games all fresh for the children). Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated, please contact me on 873061. I think it would be fair to say that attracting volunteers and fundraising is a widespread problem in all areas of charity work It is sad to say that it is the nature of the world that some people will do all they can while others are content to sit, watch and accept. Lastly I would like to say that I am fully aware that times are hard but help for your playgroup needn't necessarily involve money. People giving of theirtime, encouragementand support are all greatly appreciated.

Poor service at nightclub

From JoyAldred &James Woolnough, Bird combe Road, Westlea After enduring poorly mixed music at Cairo's nightclub on Saturday, (the bass drowned everythng out and distorted it so much that the speakers vibrated) my fiance and I decided that enough was enough and went to complain to the manager. Afterwaitingforhiminthefoyer for about 15 minutes he then arrived and listened to our complaint. Although he gave us half our money back, he thrust it at us, with the words, 'You don't know what you're talking about!' and then stalked off without explanation or discussion. Taken aback, we ran after him to ask him to discuss this comment with us, but he continued walking on without looking back or saying anything. He still refused to say anything when we asked for his name. We couldn't follow himanyfurtheras the bouncers came towards us. At the best of times, Cairo's is overpriced, but when the music spoils the enjoyment of the dancing and then the manager refuses to discuss the problem and rudely walks off as if we're nothing, then that's simply not good enough! This is in contrast to Vadims, where, as well as being a cheaper and more friendly nightclub, staff are most hopeful. Needless to say we're not going to Cairo's again - and we won't be recommending it to our friends!
