First Light is an editioned twenty-part retrospective of the artist’s planned projected-light installations of 1966–67. The portfolio is divided into five subsets, each of which pictures a single shape of light (square, triangle, rectangle, parallelogram, or column) projected against a wall or corner; in this set, a cube seems to change position and shape from sheet to sheet. Turrell collaborated with master printer, Peter Kneubuhler, who is known for his work with aquatint, a technique that allows for the use of tone rather than line; here, a rainbow of grays creates a dramatic sense of light, darkness, and space. The artist considers First Light to be his most important printmaking project; while other works on paper are “about” his installation work, he has said, First Light is uniquely “like” his work. This set is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art and was included in the exhibition New to the Print Collection in 2013.

Andy Warhol Illustrated Books, Portfolios, and Related Works of the 1950s

n 1950s New York, before Andy Warhol became one of the most famous names of the 20th century, he was already a skilled and successful commercial artist. During this time as part of his strategy to make clients and forge friendships, he created handmade books and portfolios, usually reserved as gifts for his most valued contacts. These featured unique hand-colored prints and quirky texts revealing his fondness for—among other subjects—cats, food, myths, shoes, beautiful boys, and gorgeous girls. These subjects laid the foundation for his later work. The idiosyncratic books and portfolios reveal the artist’s eccentric character as well as his accomplished draftsmanship, boundless creativity, and innuendo-laced humor.

ndy Warhol would often collaborate with his mother Julia Warhola who was known for her naive illustrations and meticulous calligraphy that would frequently accompany his illustrations. They lived together on 75th Street in New York among many felines and shared a fondness for the animal. For the self-published 25 Cats…, the book features Warhol’s hand-colored offset lithographs alongside Warhola’s whimsical lettering. Oddly enough, the book only illustrates 16 cats, but each Sam is drawn in a wholly inventive style, commemorating their many roommates.
