The Program
Civil Engineering Technology (CvET) professionals are problem-solvers who apply practical knowledge of engineering science, engineering design, and laboratory techniques. SUNY Poly’s CvET program values and encourages academic and intellectual achievement while instilling the profession’s fundamental technical competencies. The program’s core educational objectives include collaboration with industry, business, government, and other academic institutions, ensuring graduates are equipped with: • Applied engineering skills with the ability to progress to higher levels of responsibility in their chosen area • Practical problem solving and hands-on skills rooted in the fundamental areas of CvET • A desire for life-long learning and continuing professional development through graduate studies, workshops, membership in professional societies and professional registration Graduates of the program earn six years of education/experience credit toward licensure in New York State as a Professional Engineer. After graduation, they are eligible to register for the next offering of Part A of the Professional Engineering examination, Fundamentals of Engineering.

What You’ll Study
• Students may choose one or more emphases in transportation, structural, construction, or geotechnical depending on their individual interests and professional goals. • Structural: structural analysis, building/structural design, conceptual to final design projects, and finite element analysis.

• Transportation: transportation planning, roadway and bridge design, and drainage design. • Construction: project scheduling, project administration and construction methods and materials. • Geotechnical: foundation analysis and design, earth structures design, slope stability.
Faculty SUNY Poly faculty work closely with students and challenge them to excel. Many faculty members hold professional engineering licenses and have industrial experience. In addition, the faculty conduct research and encourage student participation in research activities. A low student-to-faculty ratio means that faculty get to know their students and work closely with them in and out of the classroom.
Career Opportunities A degree in CvET allows graduates the ability to select a career in a variety of settings. Graduates may pursue rolls in planning, design, construction, management, inspection, technical services, or sales. Employers often include engineering design firms, design/build construction firms, and the local, state and federal government agencies. Graduates can become professionally licensed in New York State in their specific area of expertise or pursue an advanced degree.
Labs
CAD Proficiency
Success in engineering technology depends on proficiency in computer aided drafting (CAD). Many SUNY Poly CvET graduates are actively involved with CAD or work directly with those who are. To ensure CAD proficiency and career success, SUNY Poly requires all CvET students to pass a CAD Test in order to graduate.
Student Involvement
American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) SUNY Poly’s student chapter of ASCE is one of hundreds from across the globe, providing members with an international network of peers who are making a difference in the civil engineering professional community while still in college. Our student chapter participates in competitions and offers many educational and networking activities throughout the year. Plus, student membership is free!
ASCE’S STEEL BRIDGE COMPETITION
Students in our CvET program put their skills to the test at the regional Steel Bridge Competition. Recently, SUNY Poly’s chapter placed third in Aesthetics and senior Isaiah Wood placed first in the Daniel W. Mead ASCE Symposium Paper Competition, an opportunity to curate a thoughtful, well-supported written response and oral presentation to an ethics-oriented prompt.

Given the extensive selection of courses in the program, graduates are prepared for success in the high-demand, highearning subfields of civil engineering technology. Students have access to several laboratories with industry-standard civil engineering computer applications. Laboratories are PC-based networks running applications in AutoCAD, Microstation, RAM Structural System, InRoads, Microsoft Project, gINT, Driven, and GeoSlope. In addition to computer labs, students perform hands on soils and materials (aggregate, cement, bitumen, concrete, steel) testing.
Spotlight
Ethan Davis ’24
BS in Civil Engineering Technology As a sophomore attending the biannual career fair in spring 2023, Ethan met a recruiter from National Grid who introduced him to the company’s internship opportunities. Eager to gain industry experience over the summer break, he applied to National Grid’s Syracuse-based internship program, ultimately securing a position in their Transmission Line Engineering Department. Ethan’s impressed his supervisors and was offered a parttime, remote position to work during the academic year, returning to the office fulltime the following summer. After completing his second summer with the department, he accepted their offer to become an Associate Engineer upon his graduation in December.
Our Campus Located in Utica, NY, on hundreds of wooded and landscaped acres, SUNY Poly’s campus is a beautiful living and learning environment. Students live in our modern, spacious residential complexes, including the new Hilltop Hall, SUNY’s first zeronet carbon residence hall, and enjoy an expanding array of student-focused facilities that include our state-of-the-art Center for Global Advanced Manufacturing, Student Center, and Wildcat Field House. Life on campus is enriched by a wide variety of events and activities, including the Wildcats’ championship-winning intercollegiate athletics program, our Wildcat Esports team, and a weekly agenda of intramurals, concerts, comedians, and more. Students can join one of the dozens of clubs and organizations or start one with a group of friends who share an interest.
