There is Col. Brawner, who led operations against insurgency in Eastern Visayas and CARAGA, Chief Sgt. Me n d o z a , w h o s e t e am ensured peace during the East Timor’s first national elections, Tech. Sgt. Baladjay, whose sharp-shooting impaled the Abu Sayaff in ARMM, Tech. Sgt. Berganio, who led combat operations against MILF, and Lt. Col. Micor, who fought with both Abu Sayaff and MNLF in Mindanao. Capt. Cejoco, Hospital Third Class Sgt. Estropigan, and Tech. Sgt. Tumesa, meanwhile, figured heavily in search and rescue operations. Cejoco saved lives during destructive typhoons such a s Pe p e n g a n d Fr a n k . Estropigan was instrumental in recovering plane crash victims including the late Sec. Jesse M. Robredo, while Tumesa led the all-Filipino team that repaired the C-130 cargo aircraft, which is used for relief and rehabilitation activities. Tech. Sgt. Tumesa, whose intelligence work came in handy in the reconnaissance missions over the Kalayaan Group of Islands and Sulu, also modernized the retrieval of military files in the AFP. What makes these men more admirable is their passion and commitment to serve beyond the usual call of duty. All of them are actively involved in community-based efforts from medical and dental missions to environmental campaigns, and housing and education projects. Maj. Dang-awan, for instance, has helped thousands of Filipinos all over the nation through his Church Children’s Ministries, where he conducts feeding activities, sports festivals, scholarship programs, and housing projects. Stories like these restore the people’s faith in the military, a sector that is often a subject of criticism. While there is indeed a lot to fix in the ranks, we should not overlook the men and women who actually take to heart their role in guarding peace and democracy, and in nation-building and development as well. That being said, I join the Metrobank Foundation and the Rotary Club of Makati Metro in saluting this year’s living heroes.

All diagnostic tests have their own limitations, even if the sensitivity and specificity of a particular test kit is high. Once this happens, the results may be questionable and as such, a repeat test is performed using either same test kit, a different kit and a higher methodology like an ELISA. It is also advantageous to know that, there may be other conditions that can give rise to either a false positive or a false negative result. Thus, the importance of repeating the examination. If it is positive, then, the result will have to
be confirmed through the Western Blot Technique. A negative result do not mean anything really, particularly if one has the risk factors for possibly contracting the disease. Once again, early diagnosis is very crucial to management as well as in minimizing the complications that may arise. There is no cure as yet, nor vaccines available for HIV/AIDS. Making those affected with the illness live as near normal lives, with quality living, and making them responsible citizens, by ensuring that the virus is not
