peaking at the conclusion of COP27 the Secretary General, António Guterres, said “The world still needs a giant leap on climate ambition.” The words ‘giant leap’ cannot be clearer, there is still an enormous amount to be done to stem the climate chaos, which Guterres says has reached “biblical proportions”. His underlying message was that the most vital “energy source” for change is people power. Looking forwards this can be the only approach that we take – businesses need to reduce emissions, governments need to support those communities and nations who cannot support themselves, and people need to create a sustainable base on which mankind will operate in the future. Businesses and individuals within the subsea community need

to look at how they run their companies and take steps help create a more sustainable society. These could include aspects such as: • Reducing climate impact • Creating a sustainable supply chain • Having strong business ethics • Creating a good health, safety and working environment • Ensuring diversity and gender equality • Increasing social involvement As providers of critical infrastructure, it is particularly important that system suppliers, component manufacturers and vessel operators take their responsibility to the planet seriously.
