FIONA WILLIAMS DEPUTY EDITOR @ fiwilliams__ T he wellness issue is one of my favourites. It always reminds me to go back to basics – a chance to reset, recharge, and be reinspired. For me, this meant visiting family in New Zealand but also spending time focusing on the positives of Brisbane. When we started putting this edition together, our River City was filling with water and many of our fellow small businesses were taking another hard hit. Dedicating this month’s flood relief feature story to many of our clients and favourite haunts, take a look and see who you can support and how you can make a difference on page 14. If you want to take it a step further, the Lord Mayor of Brisbane Adrian Schrinner has generously outlined in Last Word (page 51) how you can lend a helpful hand.

EDITOR’S NOTE

ven though we watched Brisbane reel through one of the hardest natural disasters of the decade recently, the lead up to this issue has still been full of highlights. Not only did we get to wrangle Brisbane Racing Club’s favourite horse, Ghost, to Treasury Brisbane for our cover shoot with the gorgeous Gracie Hayden, but I also interviewed numerous unique creatives in our feature story Niche Flex (page 18) specialising in some unheard-of vocations. Definitely worth a read! With Mother’s Day around the corner, you might even find some local gifts (page 36) to spoil her with! Enjoy.

On a lighter note, Brisbane Racing Club’s Stradbroke Season is back in the saddle (page 12) which means grab the gals and giddy up! Cover girl and Oaks Day Ambassador Gracie Hayden will be there to celebrate the fun and frivolity and we hope you’ll be there too. Any excuse to dress up and enjoy the glorious Brisbane weather, right?

Founder and chief baller of Baller Blends, this wellness woman is on a mission to create wholesome snacks that put the flavour (and fun) back into healthy eating.

rowing up on the Sunshine Coast, Kylee Collings has called Brisbane home for fifteen years – all with healthy treats in the back of her mind. Starting her brand of fool-proof raw mixes seven years ago from her home in Paddington, she was inspired by her own autoimmune struggles. Making drastic dietary and lifestyle changes to heal her body, she was able to successfully reverse her illnesses. When she’s not at a Sculpt Barre and Pilates class in Newstead or a sunset picnic with her girlfriends in Bulimba, Kylee is whipping up her DIY ball mixes that allow anyone to make healthy, wholesome treats at home with no cooking skills required. The struggle to eat clean is something so very real to so many of us, especially when it comes to sweets. “We’ve all been there, staring at the seemingly endless wall of snack bars in the health food aisle of the supermarket, trying to find a satisfying snack,” says Kylee. “I spent years and countless amounts of money on healthy foods that claimed to be delicious but tasted like bark. All I ever wanted was a late-night snack that would replace my beloved Tim Tams, so I took things into my own hands and taught myself how to make raw treats,” she says. With a background in Nutrition Science at University of Queensland under her belt, Kylee ran her business as a side hustle until she had the savings (and bravery) to leave a career she loved and pursue her passion full time. Now, she’s ballin’ for brands such as lululemon and Myer, all the while feeling humbled for what she has built. Every once in a while, she catches herself holding a packet of Baller Blends and feels immensely proud of what she’s created. “So much love and passion go into each colourful satchel of goodness,” she says. Baller Blends is proud to give back to those who have been deeply affected by the recent floods, donating hundreds of products to evacuation centres and rolling treats personally to help nourish those in need and those assisting with the clean-up.

Q uiet, calm, positive, and confident are a few words to describe single mums and sisters who founded the self-warming eye masks also known as LULA. Inspired by the warming eye masks that Margaret found while travelling around Japan and Europe, they couldn’t find them in Australia anywhere.

“When we received our first samples, we tried them at the same time and called each ENTREPRENEURSMASK

Creating a business that resonates so strongly with both, the sisters use their skills and talents from their previous careers and each work on aspects of the business that they really enjoy. “We love working together! We start most days after the school drop-offs with a coffee and a chat, working out what needs to be done in the day. We live right next door to each other, and both being single mums, we have always supported each other. Now, working together feels just like an extension of that support. We want the same for each other: to be happy, healthy. and successful in life, especially after all we’ve been through the past couple of years,” says Aisling. The same week they received their first eye mask samples, Margaret was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was then more determined to work hard and continue the business while her sister went through treatment. But just six weeks later, she received the same news as Margaret, she too had breast cancer. “The business development then slowed right down as we both went through chemotherapy, surgeries, and radiation at the same time, but we never stopped. In times when we both felt well, we would continue working and it brought us so much joy. Creating Lula Eye Masks actually became a much-needed distraction from all things cancer!” says Aisling. Looking ahead, the sisters have much in the works for the brand with a new scent coming soon, hopefully just in time for Mother’s Day. “We also have some new wonderful selfwarming products coming out later in the year!” says Aisling.

rolific daydreamer and whimsical philosopher with a constant thirst and curiosity for nature, Chelsea Baker has a niche art that requires treasures you’d normally not look twice at. By collecting dried and discarded seedpods from all over Australia, Chelsea transforms them into original designs. The results?

Completely unique pieces and wonderfully rare original artworks, evoking a sense of awe for those who have never seen them or a sense of nostalgia for anyone that has played with seedpods as a child. Ultimately, she hopes to induce an awakening that there is hidden beauty in nature that can come from unusual and forgotten places. Through her studies (Bachelor of Multimedia Design, Bachelor of Environmental Design and finally a Master of Architecture in Brisbane and the Gold Coast) Chelsea was inspired by the topics that touched on Biomimicry, where she would design buildings based on the shapes of nature. “I was amazed at how these three degrees had crossover points that developed a micro and macro appreciation for the natural, built environment. I’ve always had a fondness for art, design, and nature from childhood, but I credit my study for the final push to start experimenting and ultimately painting my seedpods,” she says.

Delving into nature play and painting around 2018, Chelsea’s art evolved into what you see today when the pandemic escalated at the start of 2020. Currently, she’s collaborating with fellow artists. One project is working with a talented woman who creates stained glass figurines. “She’s turning four of my seedpods into stained glass creations, and I am particularly eager to see the results,” says Chelsea.

Established in 2016 by Julian Leigh, Jeff Bess, Dave Lough and Matt Jancauskas, Brouhaha is a much-loved local brewery on the Sunshine Coast. Nothing out of the ordinary when it comes to craft beer, it’s the idea behind their Strawberry Rhubarb sour that’s got beer lovers frothing.

“The idea for our Strawberry Rhubarb Sour first came from trying an American mead that had been infused with strawberry and rhubarb. It was very sweet, but I felt like the flavour combination would work well in a sour beer. So, we began experimenting with our local yoghurt as the souring culture and then sourced local strawberries and rhubarb to add to secondary fermentation. Of German descent, Lutz Richter had a passion for cooking which turned into a career thanks to his grandfather and mother. “My mother is an enthusiastic cook, and she showed great consideration in her traditional German recipes and baked goods. I would spend hours in the kitchen with her assisting and learning as a young boy. I had more of a sweet tooth and loved baking so I started as an apprentice baker as soon as I could at the age of 16,” he says. With an array of custard-based baked goods, the classic almond croissant, savoury snacks, or epic croissant toasties, Lutz and his team cook up some of the best pastries in the area. “We feel warmly welcomed by the local New Farm community. Nothing can beat that feeling of being in a valued service to your local community and neighbourhood,” he says.

The healing power of oxygen is a beautiful thing. And no one knows it in Brisbane quite like Mathew Baker. If you’ve ever had a cut on your hand, you’ll know it can be painful, but you may not know how quickly your body responds to healing without even thinking about it. When it comes to chronic illness and pains, sometimes this healing process can take a little longer. Wouldn’t it be nice to speed it up? Well, thanks to Hyperbaric 02 Health and a combination of hydrogen and oxygen therapy, you can. In the industry for over 20 years, Mathew has seen his fair share of illnesses and approaches to healing. Using the hyperbaric chamber with elite athletes and those suffering chronic illness and pains, he has seen improvements through clients being scanned on their first treatment then after 12 sessions. “Wellness is the body being balanced and health is disease free so for me, you need both to achieve total well-being. With hyperbaric therapy, body psychotherapy, and remedial massage therapy I can offer this balance to my clients,” he says. Believing that the treatment isn’t properly understood (and sometimes not easily accessible), he’s passionate about letting people know it may sound like magic, but it all comes down to a science. “I aim to help all my clients be pain-free and be the best versions of themselves,” says Mathew.

“Other medical conditions that can affect the skin like acne, rosacea, and dermatitis can affect our wellbeing on a daily basis. The discomfort from these conditions can distress us both physically and emotionally. I am interested in a holistic approach to skin issues helping people with all aspects of their concerns both medically and also from an aesthetic viewpoint,” she says.

With any new patient that comes to The Skin Lab, Dr Jenkins will start with a full medical history and skin check. This provides an opportunity to concentrate on the skin health issues and provide the time needed to get to know a bit more about you and what concerns you about your skin. “When people are happy with the way their skin looks, feels, and functions it makes them feel good and nothing gives me more pleasure than seeing a smile on their face when they look in the mirror,” she says. Our once blank-walled city has evolved into a canvas for creativity, with local street artists turning concrete into trailblazing artworks. With murals in New Farm, West End, Spring Hill, Albion, and more, we chatted about all things colour, graffiti, and fine art. Where do you find inspiration? My work centres around everyday life – I explore social issues that I think are interesting and affect my generation. Favourite mural? There is something special about each piece. When I see an old painting, I am reminded of the ideas explored and the fond memories of working with other artists and organisers. Sometimes even memories of the hot sun, long days, and the difficulties of a large-scale piece in a public space – but I wouldn’t trade my job for anything. How do you capture such lifelike features in large-scale murals? I have had a lot of painting practice and most of what I do is built up layering techniques to create effects, textures, and depth. I also have several methods to proportion things on a large scale. How do you go with heights? I think the highest I have painted is about 35 metres – it has just never really phased me. Medium of choice? A combination of brush and aerosol paint.

A woman and a city silhouette for Brisbane Powerhouse. An Aboriginal artist for Cross River Rail. Having left his mark on more than one wall in Brisbane, get to know Gus Eagleton. When did your art turn into murals? Growing up in a coastal town, I never really knew much about graffiti or street art, and my interest in the subcultures sparked when I moved to Brisbane to study Fine Art. The graffiti-filled train lines I rode to university in blew my mind! Lucky for me I was studying alongside some great graffiti writers and mural painters, and they helped steer me in the right direction. Dream wall to splatter with paint? I would like to have an 8+ story building to leave my mark on in Brisbane.

Step aside hot cross buns! Bake outside the lines this Easter with this healthy citrus loaf thanks to Harris Farm Markets. Method: Preheat the oven to 180°C and line a loaf tin with baking paper. Sift flour, almond meal, and baking powder into a big bowl. Add the citrus juice, zest, vanilla, and maple syrup into the dry mix. Stir through until combined. Be careful to not overmix as it will be very dense. Pour the mixture into the lined loaf tin and bake for 4045 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Let the loaf cool in the baking tin for 10 minutes and then transfer to a cooling rack and let the cake cool completely before applying the frosting. Once the loaf has cooled generously, apply the coconut yoghurt and decorate with any citrus fruit or garnishes on hand. Recipe created by Koori Kitchen. Avid runners and cyclists frequently present to our clinic with varicose veins. Often these patients have deferred treatment for too long to avoid interfering with their fitness regime.

Recent events have had a significant impact on the overall wellbeing of our community, with disruptions to our basic food supply and extended periods spent at home. Good nutrition, sleep, coping well, moving your body, and relationships are cornerstones of wellness, health, and vitality. • Stock the pantry with basics such as wholegrain cereals, pasta, rice, and legumes (kidney beans, lentils, chickpeas, potatoes, onions) and stock the fridge with fresh proteins, calcium-rich foods, seasonal fruit, and vegetables.

Looking good and feeling good matters because our emotions are contagious and if we present our best selves, it lifts the people around us. I am often asked, who is Wil Valor? He is the person we quietly aspire to be. Wil represents the ‘will’ of the person: the will to achieve and the will to be the best person you can be. All too often, wellness is a list of daily practices that support physical wellbeing. It goes beyond lists of tasks to tick off and is aligned across the physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and intellectual areas of your life. You are engaging in wellness when you are sharing a problem with friends or helping your community, engaging your brain by following a creative pursuit, spiritualitypractisingbyliving your life within your belief system, developing your emotional literacy, or making fulfilling career choices and developing a growth mindset. It is a holistic practice and means making active choices about how you want to live. Ask:

• How do I feel at this moment?

• Have I added value by entertaining, educating, and/or evoking emotion with my target audience?

It’s easier than you think to reclaim your beautiful healthy legs from the effects of spider veins. One of the most convenient and effective ways is microsclerotherapy. It can be performed by a trained doctor in our office and does not require surgery or anaesthesia – you can even drive home afterwards! With a baby-fine needle, a liquid sclerosant is injected into the spider veins and causes them to fade away gradually over six weeks. Each injection treats a small area, so the number of injections depends on how many veins you have that require injecting. H alfway between the Gold Coast and Byron Bay spans the region aptly known as the Green Cauldron, an area rife with as many man-made delights as it has wonderous natural sceneries.

From restaurants and gin distilleries dotted within the mountains to bush tucker trails through Bunjalung, we explored the very best the region has to offer on a foodie tour that left our souls bursting with cultural appreciation and our stomachs full of epicurean delights. With three days of feasting on the horizon, we embarked Brisbane toward the coast. Deviating off the well-trodden Pacific Motorway we traversed a winding road of greenery, pocketed with snippets of stunning views out across the hinterland. In the foothills of Mount Wollumbin, we visited Husk Distillery to sample their world-renowned colour-changing Ink Gin – catapulted to fame by Margot Robbie – and enjoyed a long and lazy lunch in the fading afternoon sun. We traversed the World-Heritage listed Gondwana rainforest surrounding Cape Byron Distillery, sampling key ingredients that make their gin so iconic, including lemon myrtle directly from the shrub. After piquing our interest in what ingredients our surroundings had to offer, we were taken on a bush tucker journey. Preserving connections to the past and the rich culture of Country, the tour taught us all about the medicinal benefits and stories behind ingredients that are now widely found on menus all around UbiquitousAustralia.withByron Bay, we enjoyed tours of Stone & Wood Brewery and The Farm – being treated to a lunch spread of epic proportions (sourced nearly entirely onsite), and an afternoon of craft brews and banter at one of Australia’s most iconic breweries. Each food-filled day came to an end to the backdrop of soft rainforest noises and salt-scented breezes, at Byron’s five-star sustainable eco-retreat, the Crystalbrook Byron Resort. Nestled amongst subtropical rainforest on the shores of Tallows Beach, the rooms were a space that truly disconnects you from the greater pull of day-today life, a zone to relax and recharge the soul. From day trips around Brisbane and the Gold Coast to foodie tours like this one, all offering quality banter and unrivalled local knowledge, the guys from Kiff & Culture are exactly who we want as designated drivers. Another way people can help our community’s recovery is by heading out and supporting local businesses. It’s been an incredibly tough past two years due to COVID-19 and many were dealt another blow due to severe flooding. By heading out to your local shopping precinct, or grabbing a meal or a drink, you can play a part in supporting our city’s recovery from this event.

A HELPING HAND

L ast month’s record rainfall has had a devastating impact on Brisbane, and it will take a long time for our city to fully recover. The combination of river, creek, and overland flow flooding left significant damage, with more than 23,200 properties affected across 129 suburbs. Some of the worst affected suburbs included Rocklea and Tennyson in Brisbane’s southwest, Milton and Rosalie in Brisbane’s inner-west, and West End, Teneriffe, and Newstead near the CBD.

Following Brisbane’s biggest-ever rain event, we have been undertaking Brisbane’s biggest-ever clean up and we couldn’t have done it without the incredible support of the community.
