Life and energy in a little big city

Being close to everything is one of the advantages of living in a small city, and in Mariehamn everything you could possibly need is tucked within just a few blocks. You won’t have to go very far to find shopping, restaurants and cafés, not to mention hotels, pubs and bars.

The easiest way to explore Mariehamn is by foot. You can leave your car at home or park it in front of the hotel. Parking is free, but remember to bring along your parking disc. If you don’t have a lot of time or you’ll be heading outside the city centre, you can rent a bicycle.

DURING THE DAY, you can do some shopping on pedestrian street Torggatan. Follow this up with some lunch and a glass of wine in one of the restaurants that will tempt you to return later in the evening with their bars and nightclubs and delicious à la carte offerings. The standard of lunch served in Mariehamn’s restaurants is generally high - and even higher in come dinnertime. Regardless of whether you prefer fine dining or fun dining, you’re in for a real treat. Not only that, you’ll find just about every kind of menu, from Nordic elegance to tapas, shellfish and a touch of Asia.

WHEN EVENING ARRIVES, the pubs, bars and night clubs open their doors, with many offering live bands, DJs and even singer-songwriters. Others tempt their guests with a wide variety of, innovative cocktails and settings that make you wonder whether you’re still in Mariehamn or have somehow been transported to a tavern on the Mediterranean.

ON MILD SUMMER evenings, Ålanders and visitors all gather at the city’s numerous outdoor spots before ending the night’s festivities happy and a bit sweaty after a turn on the dance floor of a night club.

ENJOY SEAFOOD BY THE PIER

Brasserie Ångbåtsbryggan has a great location in Mariehamn. Just a stone’s throw from the town square, yet at the pier with a nice sea view over the bay and marina in the Eastern Harbour. The restaurant offers a special atmosphere because the walls and the ceiling are made of glass, which gives an illusion of being outdoors when indoors. In late summer and autumn evenings there is extra magic in the air when the natural daylight is shifting into a starry sky. The open kitchen is the heart of the restaurant. Boquerian is an oasis with a Mediterranean touch. Here you can relax, eat in peace and quiet while enjoying the moment. On the patio and in the restaurant you and your friends can order different kinds of small dishes, such as tapas, cheese and cold cuts, and stay long in good company. You are welcome to enjoy a traditional mix of cold and hot dishes and share them with your friends. Sittkoffska Gården is a popular meeting point in the middle of Mariehamn. Cosiness, vintage, local raw produce and sustainability are the key words for the restaurant. Take an extra look at the imaginary décor, such as the recycled windows, old pieces of furniture, lush green plants and the gigantic felted elk head. Here you can enjoy genuine homely meals of local raw produce and high quality. Visit also the Farm Store, filled with Åland artisan food products that you can buy home. STONE OVEN BAKED PIZZAS WITH FRESH INGREDIENTS

Pizzeria Diablo is located on Nygatan, in the heart of Mariehamn’s entertainment centre. Diablo serves delicious stone oven baked pizzas with a local twist and of fresh raw produce. CHALLENGE YOUR FAMILY ON ADVENTURE GOLF

Ångbåtsbryggan Adventure Golf is next to Brasseriet in the Eastern Harbour. Here you can have a lunch, coffee or something good to drink before or after a round on the 18-hole mini golf course with fun obstacles.
