New Fitness Programs Bring Slice of Normalcy Back to Daily Life

The day’s fitness class begins at 10:00 a.m. Yet by 9:25 a.m., residents have already begun making their way down to the Wintergarden to claim their seats. Ever since programming slowly started to resume across St. John’s independent living communities, social distancing guidelines limit the number of participants in common spaces. Still, this reduced capacity is not the only reason interested participants are enthusiastically arriving early. On this particular September Friday morning, residents at Brickstone by St. John’s will try an exercise class that is brand new to them. “Drum fitness” involves using a pair of drumsticks to strike a large inflatable stability ball, giving participants a full body workout. This offering is just the latest in a series of fitness programs rolled out at Chestnut Court, Briarwood, the Hawthorne, and Brickstone. And while having a large inflatable ball between your legs during an entire workout might
seem odd at first, you get the feeling that a true sense of normalcy is returning for these residents. Jodi Brodzinski believes that her arrival at St. John’s has come at an opportune time. She took on the job of wellness specialist at St. John’s Meadows in late July—over four months after the COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of all in-person resident activities. “Things have been opening up safely and gradually here,” says Jodi. “It is a wonderful opportunity to start fresh. And they (independent and assisted living residents) have never had a wellness specialist before.” After 40 years as a fitness instructor, aquatic trainer, and physical education teacher—the last seven of those years working almost exclusively with the senior population—Jodi brings a unique perspective on health and wellness to this brand new role at St. John’s. After months of inactivity, she

knows it will take a consistent effort to help many residents get back the strength and stamina they lost over the early part of 2020. “I tell people ‘it doesn’t matter what you were able to do before. Where can we build from today?’” says Jodi. An internet search during the height of the pandemic in New York State would bring hits to dozens of articles and videos showing exercises a person could do while in isolation to stay in shape. While those resources were certainly helpful for some people, the missing element for many was the motivation that comes from working with an in-person instructor. Since Jodi’s arrival, the passion she brings to her work and these new classes is palpable. That enthusiasm has also been contagious. “She’s wonderful,” says Brickstone resident Carol Bradshaw. Fellow resident Geneva Stokes agrees. “And the energy she brings. You’re sore afterwards, but never in pain.” There has, of course, been a major emphasis on safety throughout the
implementation of these new fitness programs. “We are all six feet apart,” explains Jodi. “We are wearing our masks and bringing our water bottles. We’re adhering to all of the rules.” As an expert with four decades of experience leading fitness classes, Jodi also knows that it is important for people of any age to get back into the swing of regular

Jodi is thrilled to see the positive energy that comes from these new offerings. “It’s a blessing really,” she says. “Especially right now when there is so much negativity out there.”

Centenarians Enjoy Special Celebration Each year, St. John’s hosts memorable events honoring residents reaching and exceeding the milestone age of 100. Despite state mandated visitor restrictions, the party went on for four St. John’s Meadows residents and their families on June 18.

While the 2020 celebration looked a little different than those of years past, the impact was felt by all. The resident-honorees were seated outside of the main entrance of the Hawthorne at St. John’s Meadows as a parade of loved ones with signs and noisemakers repeatedly drove past them in their cars, trucks, jeeps, and even a specially decorated bicycle. The event drew dozens of enthusiastic family members and friends.
Friends and Partners Help Meet PPE Need A great need for personal protective equipment (PPE) this spring was met by dozens of volunteers and organizations willing to help the St. John’s cause. The assistance came from all over—from a St. John’s resident who purchased a 3-D printer his grandson used to create face shields to an army of sewists stitching together dozens of needed medical gowns. The response was overwhelming—and profoundly helped in the effort to slow the spread of infection. We thank all who contributed their materials, services, and time during a difficult period.

Golf Tournament Brings Friends Together (safely) for a Good Cause Despite being in the midst of a worldwide pandemic, the 31st edition of the St. John’s Golf Tournament came together, marking another successful year of fun and funds raised. On July 20, several dozen golfers once again hit the links at Midvale Country Club in Penfield to support the St. John’s mission for a fun day of golf and goodwill. In all, over $90,000 was raised on the day to fund the ongoing support of residents living across the St. John’s spectrum of care.

A New Look for Rehabilitation Services Several recent updates have made the rehabilitation program at St. John’s Home more attractive to older adults and their families. These enhancements give guests recovering from injury and illness access to innovative equipment and amenities that are better preparing them to return to their homes safely. For those going through physical therapy exercises in the area’s largest rehabilitation gym, all new features like a series of simulated stone, gravel, and turf walking surfaces and a real BMW coupe for practicing car transfers offer real-life preparation for a safe return to daily activities. The completely renovated occupational therapy apartment allows for guests to work with a therapist in a fully functional kitchen, laundry room, living room, bedroom, and bathroom. This new environment mirrors a typical home setting, giving guests a great push towards success in their next destination. St. John’s Rehabilitation also sets itself apart from other programs by offering window visits for family members to see and talk to their loved ones as they complete their therapy regiments. “She was surprised and delighted,” said Lisa Martin after speaking with and observing her mother during her first window visit. “To be able to actually see her progress, it’s really encouraging and I feel great peace of mind.” SEE VIDEO AND NEWS STORY OF ST. Technology Sparks Better Connections The worldwide COVID-19 pandemic has served as the catalyst for us all to find new ways to communicate with loved ones both near and far. At St. John’s communities, we made it a priority during the pandemic to use technology to ensure that residents stayed as connected as possible with family and friends during a time when in-person visits were impossible. St. John’s purchased dozens of tablets and scheduled weekly video chats for residents. More older adults than ever before are now using technology to communicate, grocery shop, and find a ride. As a result, St. John’s has put a greater emphasis on providing training and support for residents looking to safely navigate online options for communications, commerce, and more. SEE HOW ST. Residents Gain New Student Pen Pals

Upperclassmen from the Harley School in Brighton were connected with independent living residents at St. John’s for a pen pal initiative. In lieu of in-person learning, this project temporarily replaced the W.I.S.E. program that launched during the 2018-2019 school year. The pen pal program culminated with video chats between several of the student-resident pairs.
