Credits in Social Studies

All reasonable attempts will be made to give students their elective preferences, but changes will not be made to academic courses to accommodate elective preferences.

Florida Virtual School Courses: Students needing to take a course for credit recovery or wanting to pursue an enrichment course that SJAdoes not offer, are able to do so through Florida Virtual School (FLVS). Courses must be approved by theAcademic Dean, the Principal, as well as having parental consent to take the course. Course requests to School Counseling office for FLVS courses must be done by June 1st and courses must be taken during summer break. Students will receive credit on their SJAtranscript at the completion of the course that was previously approved. Credit will not apply to cumulative GPA. Online courses during the school year would only be approved for

extenuating circumstances, continuation of a previously approved World Language or to take an AP course not offered at SJA. An approval process will be followed for any FLVS requests.

Honors and Advanced Level Course Note: Advanced courses require a greater demand on students through increased academic rigor. Academic rigor is obtained through the application, analysis, evaluation, and creation of complex ideas that are often abstract and multi-faceted. Students are challenged to think and collaborate critically on the context they are learning. Honors level rigor will be achieved by increasing text complexity of task. Instruction will be structured to give students a deeper understanding of conceptual themes and organization within and across disciplines. Academic rigor is more than simply assigning to students a greater quantity of work.
