BAC K TO F I RST PRINCIPLES \
Leading organisations is both complex and demanding. Ultimately accountable for all functions of an organisation, executives are responsible for every commercial agreement made with with customers, suppliers and other trading partners. These agreements are pivotal in building trusted relationships and smoothly completing business transactions.
Despite technological advancements, contracts are still agreed between people and remain the ‘glue that binds’ trading ecosystems. Handshakes may not occur as often as they used to, but for business to be done there must come a point when trading partners decide they are happy with the proposed terms; thus, these moments in time between people remain firmly at the heart of doing business.

\005
THE INTERCONNECTED ECOSYSTEM \
Now, more than ever, organisations are striving to become more agile, responsive and adaptive. The balance of power has shifted in favour of the customer. The immediacy and high frequency of customer interactions results in a feedback loop that demands providers both respond and adapt quickly. Front, middle and back offices must work in harmony like never before. Eco-system partners must work collaboratively and
iteratively with delivery partners to refine offerings and capabilities in days and weeks, not months and years. The dangers presented by an inability to respond well are very real. Compromised relationships, loss of competitive advantage, leaked revenues and unmanaged risks all await those who lack proper oversight and control of their trading activity.
\006
THE SEVEN STEPS \
CONTINUOUS MOTION \
For each agreement, commercial terms are agreed based on assumptions of future performance; these inform contractual terms but only encapsulate a single moment in time. However, terms continue to evolve throughout the life of the commercial relationship. Up-to-date and accurate information is critical in maintaining ‘situation awareness’ to guard against the compromising of relationships,
maintaining operational and accounting data flows, and protecting against unmanaged compliance risks and revenue leakage. In a rapidly changing and unpredictable world, it is crucial that enterprises ensure that all commercial agreements are secured, relationships are protected, and contractual commitments are delivered upon.

FLYING BLIND \ It is often challenging for executives to obtain accurate and timely commercial progress and performance information. Throughout the seven stages in the life of each agreement, three parallel flows of information are continuously passing between two parties. Relationship and commercial; operational delivery and financial accounting data all flow back and forth between executive counterparties. Like a pilot and crew without proper instrumentation, teams are unable to respond quickly to changing circumstances.
As organisations become larger and more geographically spread, the problems only worsen. Vital progress and performance information is scattered across a multitude of systems, leaving important questions unanswerable within meaningful timescales.
“
How many engagements are we conducting with client ‘X’ in the 15 different territories in which we work for them? Are all our contracts up-to-date on compliance clauses such as anti-bribery, anti-slavery and data privacy legislation? Have we invoiced correctly and what have we been paid for at this point in time?
Current approaches mean questions like these, and others like them, take days or even weeks to answer. Valuable resources must be diverted from other duties and data manipulation tools such as spreadsheets and databases are required to source, gather, extract and clean the data. The time, attention and monetary costs of these exercises reserves them for only the most deserving of situations. For example client account reviews, significant legislation changes and quarterly/annual business performance reviews. Thus, smaller movements in agreements go unnoticed. Revenue leaks out between the gaps of contract, invoice and cash received; conflicts of interest are unidentified; contract clauses become dangerously out-of-date; important changes in customer buying patterns leave product teams constantly behind the curve.
