An interagency unit assembled to take a bite out of crimes involving drugs and gangs, the CST has been successful in lowering violent crime rates in our area since 2014. Bill Perry grew up in Live Oak, Florida, a small town just south of Valdosta, GA. After graduating from Stetson University, he earned three degrees from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. In 2004, he retired as pastor of First Baptist Church of Statesboro after serving that congregation for 22 years. He and his wife, Margaret, registrar of Statesboro High School before her retirement in 2005, have two daughters, five grandsons, and one granddaughter. Bill has been very much involved in community life in Statesboro. He is an avid reader and has been a runner since 1973.

Farmers & Merchants Bank Announces Promotions Five Move Up at Bulloch’s Only Locally Owned and Directed Bank FMB President Brett Morgan announced the promotion of five long-term bank employees this spring, citing their “longterm performance and dedication to the bank and to the people of Bulloch County we serve.” Rebecca “Becky” Anderson, the bank’s Human Resources and Deposit Compliance Officer, has been named one of three new vice presidents. She is also the bank officer responsible for compliance with the Bank Secrecy Act and Office of Foreign Assets Control. A 42-year resident of Bulloch County who attended Georgia Southern, she joined FMB in 2000. John Durrence, FMB’s Information Technology officer for ten years, has been promoted from Assistant Vice President to V.P. Durrence is in charge of all bank electronic systems, including mobile banking, online bill payments and remote deposit capture. He graduated from Georgia Southern and has been a resident of Statesboro for 38 years.

Shirley Hodges joined the bank 22 years ago as a proof operator, processing transactions such as checks and deposit and withdrawal slips. Today, as FMB’s newly named Vice President/ Security Officer, she supervises all deposit operations and the bank’s physical security. A graduate of Southeast Bulloch High, she lives in Nevils. Lisa Hodges, a long-time commercial lender and agricultural lending specialist, has been named an Assistant Vice President. A Bulloch county native and graduate of Statesboro High School, she has worked for FMB for 11 years. Kathleen Sullivan, the bank’s controller, is FMB’s other new Assistant Vice President. Her responsibilities include overall bank accounting operations and report filing. William James Students Win at Regional STEM Fair William James Middle School students received top awards for their projects at the Savannah Regional Science & Engineering Fair this spring. WMJS students submitted 34 projects for judging at the Regional Fair, which was held at Savannah State University. Their entries were part of more than 160 entries from across the region. The Lodge at Bethany Opens for Residents

In 1923, the Primitive Baptist denomination in Vidalia, Georgia, opened Faith Cottage and the Bethany Home as an outreach ministry to serve homeless widows. The Mission has spanned almost 100 years and continues today with the opening of the Lodge at Bethany, a 48-unit assisted living and memory care facility; the only licensed assisted living community in Statesboro and surrounding areas. Statesboro Jaycees Chapter Raises Over $5,000 for Area Charities

Only one year after being reactivated, the Statesboro Jaycees have raised over $5,000 to benefit Bulloch County charities. The Statesboro Jaycees’ feature fundraising event, Jaycees’ Nite Out, has proven to be a great success in raising money to assist local groups. The most recent event, held on January 9, 2016, had close to 90 participants making it possible for the chapter to donate $3,000 to Fostering Bulloch’s 7th Mile Farm, a 30-acre outdoor recreational facility for children in foster care and at-risk youth in the community. Fostering Bulloch serves children in foster care, child protective services, and other marginal living situations in Statesboro and Bulloch County. The first Jaycees’ Nite Out in the summer of 2015 raised $2,000 to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Bulloch County. The next fundraiser is being planned for the summer of 2016. State Recognizes Bulloch County BOE for Financial Excellence The Georgia Department of Audits and Accounts (GDA A) selected the Bulloch County Board of Education (BOE) to receive an Award of Distinction for Excellent Financial Reporting for the district’s Fiscal Year 2015 audit. April 14, 2016. The award is presented annually to qualifying public school systems and two-year and four-year colleges and universities in Georgia. The GDA A is a state agency that exists to provide independent, credible audit services promoting improvement in government. Their auditors annually review the school system’s finances. Resource optimization is a key strategic goal area in the Bulloch County school system’s strategic plan. Recognitions like these are an indication of the positive work being done in this area. In the school system’s most recent accreditation process, AdvancEd commended the school system on its proactive fiscal planning and actions that have consistently placed the system on a firm financial foundation. The district’s sound financial management has also been recognized multiple times by Standard & Poor’s Financial Services, LLC (S&P), the nation’s second-leading bond rating firm.

Local Pharmacist Lindsay Walker Elected AIP Chairman of the Board Lindsay Walker, R.Ph, has been tapped to be the next Chairman of the Board for the Georgia Academy of Independent Pharmacies (AIP). The AIP is the small business branch of the state’s largest pharmacy organization, the Georgia Pharmacy Association (GPhA), and serves to “ensure the economic viability and security of independent pharmacy.” The GPA represents Georgia’s pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and their patients. Walker is owner, along with wife, Devra Walker, CPA & CFO, of both Walker Pharmacy locations in Statesboro and Brooklet Drug. N Not many towns in Georgia have the interagency cooperation necessary to form a multi-agency task force unit dedicated to fighting drug related crimes with a focus on street crimes and gangs - the areas of crime in which the most violent and felonious assaults occur. Fortunately for Statesboro and Bulloch County, area law enforcement leaders had the vision to create a special unit of officers dedicated to enforcement, investigation, and community engagement, Bulloch County’s Crime Suppression Team (C.S.T.). These officers have a record of lowering crime rates that proves they have what it takes to be tough on crime. The three area law enforcement agencies making up the members of the C.S.T. are the Statesboro Police Department, Georgia Southern’s Public Safety Department, and the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Department. In 2014, law enforcement leaders noticed that each agency was handling some of the same functions and investigations. There was a lot of cross-over on some cases. The Crime Suppression Unit at the Statesboro Police Department, the Drug Suppression Team and the Sheriff’s Targeted Enforcement Patrol Team at the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office had overlapping missions. “After seeing the crossover, it was proposed to combine resources to form one

large team,” stated Interim Police Chief Robert Bryan. “This benefitted everyone in two ways: the larger combined unit would have a greater body of resources, and the liaisons between agencies opened up communication across the board.” In 2008, Deputy Chief Bryan, who has been with the police department for 18 years, wrote a federal grant for equipment to be used in the SPD’s Crime Suppression Unit. “There was little additional investment,” he stated. “When the C.S.T. was created, we merged the separate programs and transferred a lot of the equipment at no additional cost.” When the Police Department’s Crime Suppression

Unit came into existence, Deputy Chief Bryan was the first Bureau Commander. He was open to the merger because he could see the benefits of combined resources for everyone. Sheriff Lynn Anderson said, “At the Sheriff’s Department we already had a Drug Suppression Team and a S.T.E.P. unit. Jared [Akins] and Scott [Brunson] approached me about combining the units. We had a Drug Suppression Team in the 1990s that had members from all three units, but it went away. I remember it being very effective, so we decided to do it again.” “The whole purpose is to be proactive and address problems in specific areas of the County or address one set of issues, like street robberies,” said Chief Deputy of the Sheriff’s Office Jared Akins. “Instead of one agency using limited resources, we can put 14 guys into helping with those kinds of cases.” All departments agree that a lot of what they have dealt with centers on drug activity. Officers are trained especially for the unit and are recommended by their respective department heads for service in the C.S.T. They are assessed for being

mentally and physically tough enough to accept the challenges that come with being a part of the unit. All the officers train together and spend many hours away from home and families. Plus, the officers are constantly on call for the bigger crimes to which everyone responds. Special equipment is employed to help fight the battle on crime. The C.S.T. uses cameras, hidden cameras, unmarked vehicles, specialized radio equipment, and two drug-sniffing canines: Max and Gismo, to get the job done. Max is trained to locate drugs, while Gismo is specially trained to locate missing persons, bodies, stolen items, and drugs. Not all of the officers work undercover, some are visible to assist with interacting with the community. “Citizen Contact” is a goal of the unit to keep the community informed about possible crime trends, and to just let community members know that the unit is hard at work for them. The C.S.T. visits area schools to do walk-throughs, too. “The kids love it,” said Akins. “Especially the canines.” Crime statistics show a positive trend since the unit was formed. and that’s the way we want to keep it. If the word is out that you get arrested in Bulloch County if you commit a crime, that’s good,” said Akins. The unit is led by Captain Jason Kearney of the Sheriff’s Department. Two members are from the Georgia Southern Department of Public Safety, four members are from the Statesboro Police Department, and eight members are from the Bulloch County Sheriff’s office. (See Sidebar). The unit gets administrative support from Office Manager Denise Burnsed. “We wouldn’t have a unit without Denise,” said Kearney. “She keeps everyone on track.” The C.S.T. also gets great support from the District Attorney’s Office. Assistant D.A. Barclay Black works with the team on all cases. His dedication to the C.S.T. unit is also key in that with increased arrests, the caseloads in Superior and State Court are increased. “He is always on call,” stated Akins. Black is successful in getting the cases dispensed and in his conviction rate, which was 95.4% in 2015. The biggest challenge the officers face is keeping up with trends in crime that change each year. “It’s not always the same drugs coming through,” said Captain Kearney. “Trends change. It’s not always the same methods of operation.” Currently the C.S.T. is seeing an increase in gang activity in the area. “Many of the crimes being committed are being done by nonresidents of Bulloch County,” said Kearney. “The drug work never ends and it connects with so many other crimes.” “We also keep a check on people on parole and probation. We’re on top of that, too,” he said. “Especially the recidivists, the people who commit the same offenses over and over. It’s better to get them off the street.” With shorter and shorter sentences being imposed because of jail over-crowding, keeping tabs on repeat offenders has become an important aspect of law enforcement, and the C.S.T. has it covered. “I’ve worked in law enforcement for 20 years and it shocks even me to see what this unit has been able to accomplish over the last several years. I am extremely proud of each and every investigator in

The law enforcement officers that are assigned to C.S.T. are truly dedicated to keeping this community from becoming like so many other communities where criminals have literally taken over. Each month, our Surgical Services department performs over 1000 outpatient procedures and our Emergency Room treats over 3,500 patients. Over 135 babies are born in the Women’s Pavilion each month. East Georgia Regional Medical Center opened an Interventional Cardiology service in April 2010. This expansion of our cardiology program has allowed patients needing angioplasty and/or stent placement to receive these services without leaving Statesboro. Electrophysiology services were also added to the cardiology program in August 2011. The addition of these services have dramatically increased the quality of care in our community. In October 2010, East Georgia Regional became one of only four hospitals in Southeast Georgia capable of performing robotic surgery. This highly specialized surgical tool allows surgeons to perform procedures that are less invasive and require less recovery time. The surgical robot has high definition optics, a simulation module for physician training, and will be used to perform increasingly complex surgical procedures, including thoracic and general surgery. As the summer approaches, many teenagers and young adults utilize their break from school to schedule a suitable time to have their wisdom teeth evaluated. Studies show that 90% of patients will have a wisdom tooth removed in their lifetime. Wisdom teeth do not require removal if they are able to grow into one’s mouth completely and functionally, and are painless, cavity-free, disease-free, and surrounded by healthy gum tissue. The Auxiliary mission statement is to provide quality volunteer services with compassion and care for East Georgia Regional Medical Center and, through outreach, to enhance the well-being of the community. When you walk in the door at East Georgia Regional Medical Center you are greeted by the friendly face of an auxiliary volunteer. These volunteers assist patients and their families by helping them locate different departments and service areas of the hospital. As you walk throughout the hospital you are likely to pass a volunteer dressed in a blue jacket or vest. These volunteers lend a helping hand by delivering newspapers, visiting with patients, assembling information packets for new mothers, assisting with non-clinical office duties and organizing the mail each day. The goal of an auxiliary volunteer is to furnish non-medical, but comforting services to the patient and their families. Volunteers are often in a position where that little “extra” something, whether it is a smile, a comforting comment, or a willing ear can makes a big difference in the patient experience.

Last year, the Auxiliary volunteers donated a total of $25,600 to community outreach projects. The funding of the community project are raised through the MOM 365 newborn photography program, scrub sale, jewelry sale and other various projects held throughout the year. The Auxiliary offers 6 scholarships a year to students who are pursuing a degree in the medical field. Three of the scholarships are awarded to students at Ogeechee Technical College and three are awarded to Georgia Southern University. Other organizations the Auxiliary donates to include: Statesboro Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, Altrusa Club, Prevent Child Abuse, Homebound Services, Inc., Med Connection, Christian Social Ministry Utility Assistance, Area Christians Together In Service, Inc., Hearts and Hands Clinic, Inc., Sons of Light Fellowship Sharing Thanksgiving project, Ogeechee Area Hospice, Bulloch County Breast Cancer Foundation. You can see him on the sidelines at Georgia Southern football practice, or perhaps in the Ted Smith Football Operations Center training the athletic trainers on how to assess players with eye injuries. He’s also responsible for examining the vision of Georgia Southern football, basketball and baseball players. Not only does he check the eye sight of athletes, he can help them correct a tendency to have tunnel vision when focusing on the ball during play. Through the Sports Vision Program he makes sure the athletes with vision challenges have a plan for correction and improvement. Employing specialized equipment for evaluating their vision and improving their balance and focus, Dr. Horace Deal keeps an eagle eye of the athletes at Georgia Southern. A native of Appling County, Dr. Deal grew up on the family farm. His father and mentor, Rollie Deal, farmed all his life and was only able to complete a grade school education. But, he managed to teach Dr. Deal some important life lessons. “My dad always said, ‘Take care of folks, and folks will take care of you,’” shared Dr. Deal. “That became my philosophy. If I can’t make my patients happy, then I’ll refund their money. If I can’t make them see better, then I don’t want their money.” Dr. Deal was born the fourth of four boys. The first three sons to Rollie and Roanna Deal were born within seven years. Dr. Deal came along 13 years later, and was reared as an only child with three adult brothers. “I tell my brothers it just took my parents four tries to get it right,” Dr. Deal said. An excellent student and by his own admission a mediocre farm hand, Dr. Deal was encouraged to pursue a college education. He attended Mercer University in Macon from 1980-1984, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History.

“I didn’t really know what I wanted to be,” said Dr. Deal. One of the head residence hall directors encouraged Dr. Deal to apply for a position at Georgia Southern which had nine jobs available at the time. He applied and interviewed for the position of Hall Director for a men’s dorm. He was hired and served from 19851987 with the Housing Department. “That job paid five digits and a place to stay with cable,” said Dr. Deal, “I think I had to finance my first TV.” Still trying to decide what to do for a career, Dr. Deal considered law school or getting a master’s degree, but nothing seemed to appeal to him. While working in Student Housing, Dr. Deal followed the lead of other hall directors and spent his summers working at a camp in the North Carolina Mountains known as Blue Star Camp for children aged six to sixteen. For two summers Dr. Deal supervised fourth grade counselors, the third year, he took on sixth grade. They called him back to supervise 20 counselors, then he became Camp Leader and the Program Director. He was in charge of all the children, supervising the counselors, bus trips, and scheduling. It was at Blue Star Camp that Dr. Deal had a fortuitous encounter with another Camp Supervisor, former Statesboro resident Bill Becker, husband of Optometrist Sherri Becker. Bill encouraged Dr. Deal to look into becoming an Optometrist. With a degree in history, Dr. Deal calculated that he would have to take four to five years of classes to be eligible. Eventually he made the decision to leave Georgia Southern because he could only take one class a semester as Hall Director. “I went to West Georgia and finished a degree in chemistry in 1991,” Dr. Deal stated. While preparing for acceptance into Optometry school, Dr. Deal took the position of Director of Campus Life at Andrew College, a small Methodist school of around 300 students in Cuthbert, Georgia. In 1993 he was accepted into the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee. With his many years of counseling and guiding campers and students, Dr. Deal felt he had something to offer. “My first year, I was a little older than the other students and I wanted to help out in some way. I ran for Vice President. Nobody qualified to run against

me, so they extended the qualification period. Another young lady qualified and won the election.” During the weeks following the election, Dr. Deal decided to act as if he had been elected anyway and began helping the other students by finding out the ten most often missed questions on final exams. He shared his findings with other students. “We found out that almost every time you could study those ten and do well on the finals,” Dr. Deal said. Before the school year had ended, the president asked Dr. Deal to run for president. “To get 120 people to agree is impossible,” said Dr. Deal, “but, I did serve as president my second, third and fourth years of optometry school. I learned a lot about dealing with people through that experience. I learned how to compromise to get the best possible outcome. I also was able to work out a test schedule to benefit almost everyone.” He graduated in 1997, and became aware of two positions back home in Georgia: one in Atlanta and one in Hinesville. He was set on Atlanta but, “I took a backroad, I think the Golden Isles Parkway, to Hinesville, and the closer I got to South Georgia, the more it felt like home to me,” he shared. He started a practice in Hinesville and was there for three years when Dr. Becker called. She and Bill were moving to Virginia and offered their practice in Statesboro to Dr. Deal. He accepted the offer and now has a home in Statesboro with wife, Caroline, and nine-yearold daughter, Emmaline. He opened his first Statesboro office on Lester Road, but moved into a newly renovated facility on Savannah Avenue in 2012. “It was a great location and local developer Jamey Cartee was able to not only renovate the building, but he did additional construction towards the road increasing the size of the original building. He also designed and created a very welcoming interior for our patients featuring an attractive area where we are able to sit down with patients and help them choose the most pleasing and functional eye glasses.” Since opening in May 2012, “the practice has been growing like crazy,” said Dr. Deal. “I’m looking at adding another doctor.” Even though Dr. Deal stays busy at Vision Source, he manages to sneak out some afternoons in the fall to check on the practicing Georgia Southern football team. ers and collecting Georgia Southern football memorabilia. His passion for collecting can be seen in the array of items he has obtained dating from 1982 to the present. The work he does with Georgia Southern Athletics, “Gives me a variety of things to do beyond my practice,” said Dr. Deal. In addition to his work at GS, Dr. Deal is involved in many community organizations. He serves as the Optometry Director for the Hearts & Hands Clinic and does pro bono vision work for the Lions Club. He also delivers lectures and presentations to professional organizations on topics ranging from “Sports Vision” to “Diabetes and the Eye.” Dr. Deal was chosen as the 1999 Georgia Young O.D. of the Year, and was again honored in 2011 as the Georgia O.D. of the Year. The Surgeons at Cedar Local Quality Providers Offer Specialized Care Written by Jenny Foss Photography by Frank Fortune When it comes to general surgery, due to today’s high-tech instrumentation and advanced technology, procedures such as major abdominal surgery are now replaced with minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques that often reduce pain, accelerate recuperations, and reduce cost without sacrificing good outcomes. Fortunately for patients requiring general surgery in our region, the advances in technology offering these patient benefits can be found right here at Cedar Surgical Associates, P.C. The four physicians of Cedar Surgical specialize in laparoscopic and robotic surgeries of the abdomen, breasts, lungs, head, neck, circulatory system, endocrine system, and digestive system. Cedar Surgical was founded by Akram Hassanyeh, M.D., F.A.C.S., in Metter, Georgia, in 1988. Named for the street on which the practice was located, and the Cedars of Lebanon, Dr. Hassanyeh’s native country, the practice grew and eventually moved to Statesboro near the old hospital on Grady Street. In 1999, Dr. Hassanyeh was joined by Camille Atallah, M.D., F.A.C.S., and in 2000, the office was relocated to the Medical Office Building at EGRMC. Ten years ago the doctors built a stateof-the art medical office building for their expanding practice and eventually added new partners Jean Claude Swartz, M.D., and Kenneth Brian Walton, M.D., to the new facility on Bermuda Run Road minutes from the surgical suite at the hospital. With the transitioning of retiring partners, Atallah and Swartz, Dr. Hassanyeh and Dr. Walton have added new associates who cover several areas of specialized surgery. Rebecca Spahos, M.D., joined the team a little over three years ago, and last summer Matthew Musielak M.D., became a partner. The benefit of having four general surgeons with varied special interests means for those requiring general surgery it is no longer necessary to travel to larger

metropolitan hospitals for procedures that can be performed right here at East Georgia Regional Medical Center. Each doctor brings a special area of expertise to the practice. Dr. Hassanyeh holds a fellowship in cardiovascular surgery from the Texas Heart Institute. He was instrumental in bringing robotic surgery to EGRMC. “We are fortunate to be the first hospital in the region to offer robotic surgery of the abdomen,” said Dr. Hassanyeh, “In fact, the first gall bladder operation in Southeast Georgia was performed here, even before the Savannah hospitals.” Dr. Hassanyeh has also operated with the robot in Brunswick, Georgia. In fact, Dr. Hassanyeh is the only robotically trained general surgeon in Southeast Georgia. Dr. Walton has special interests in vascular disease, lung cancer surgery, and endovascular aortic aneurysm surgery. During a five-year internship and residency in general surgery, he became especially interested in the heart and lungs. He extended his training with a fellowship in cardiovascular/thoracic surgery at the University of Texas. “The last year of residency, I knew I enjoyed surgeries of the heart and lungs most of all,” he said. Dr. Walton also prefers the variety that general surgery offers. “I may be doing vascular surgery one day, thoracic one day, and general one day. It is energizing to be able to mix it up going from gall bladder to coronary artery to lung surgery or an appendix,” he said. Dr. Walton was instrumental in bringing thoracic surgery to EGRMC. “Stent grafting for aortic aneurisms was not done here before,” he said. He also performs lung cancer surgery. “It is very gratifying to remove a tumor and potentially help cure May/June 2016 • 65

someone of cancer,” he stated. Dr. Rebecca Spahos grew up in Hampton, Georgia, near Atlanta, the youngest in a family of six children. She became interested in medicine after experiencing the loss of her grandparents to cancer. “That inspired me to help people with cancer,” she said. The only one of the six children who didn’t join the military, Dr. Spahos instead attended the University of Georgia majoring in genetics. She managed a research lab at Emory for two years, and for patient interaction did volunteer work at the hospital. While on a student mission trip to Mexico, she experienced an epiphany while working with the local children; Dr. Spahos decided she wanted to become a doctor. “I’m a Christian, and I felt I was called to be where I needed to be,” she said. from the mission trip, she applied and was accepted to the Medical College of Georgia. She spent her internship and residency in general surgery at Memorial Medical Center in Savannah. Dr. Spahos’ special interests include laparoscopic breast and thyroid surgery. She has also had special training in colon resections. In addition, she enjoys working with the robot, especially for surgeries of the abdomen and hernias. One of her goals is to continue working with other area doctors to have a certified Breast Center of Excellence at EGRMC. “With the Breast Center, we will be able to combine radiation oncology, radiology, surgery, and plastic surgery, all in one place,” she said. To become accredited by the American College of Surgeons, the

Breast Center will go through about a twoyear process of working with patients and collecting data Dr. Matthew Musielak is another surgeon at Cedar Surgical working on creating a Center of Excellence at EGRMC. His focused area is general surgery and bariatric medicine. After attending medical school at Ross University in the Dominican Republic, he completed his internship at the University of Missouri-Columbia, in Columbia, Missouri, and a did his residency at Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Musielak grew up outside of St. Louis excelling in athletics. Through sports like basketball, baseball, soccer and gymnastics, he experienced his share of sports injuries. “I wanted to do orthopedic surgery since

grade school,” he said, “but, I thought it wasn’t graceful enough. I did like the technical aspects of surgery and found general surgery to be more sophisticated. I have always wanted to do surgery.” He hopes to help create a Bariatric Center of Excellence at the hospital. “We are putting all policies and procedures in place,” he said. Like the Breast Center, it will take a couple of years to gather patient data and complete the process for certification by the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Musielak also sees patients in Metter and Claxton. “In rural medicine you can be a true general surgeon,” he stated. “We can help to address the needs in those communities as well. We can do some of the cases in the smaller hospitals in those communi-

ties and bring the bigger cases to EGRMC. That’s something we hope to have in the future,” he said. With the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, doctors are seeing an increase in rules and paper work required for insurance filings. On February 1, 2016, Dr. Hassanyeh decided to sell Cedar Surgical to EGRMC to take advantage of the added administrative help and the purchasing power a large hospital company has versus a small medical practice. “I love what I do,” he said, “Sometimes the other things get between the patient and the doctor – government policies, insurance, etc. – Our partnership with EGRMC means that we still get to do the best for the patient. I love the satisfaction of helping my patients.”

“We all want to be able to really help people locally,” Dr. Musielak said. “If we can help people in the community to realize the level and scope of surgical care that we can provide at EGRMC, we can keep them near their homes and their families during recovery, saving them travel time and worry.” Dr. Spahos agrees, “We’re a small town, we like to take care of our own people,” she said, “We can take time with our patients and usually can have them scheduled for a procedure within 24-48 hours. Sometimes at the bigger hospitals patients wait four to six weeks for surgery. There are advantages to letting us serve you here at the hospital. We are well trained surgeons and we just want our community to know they can experience quality care here. We want them to be healthy.” S May/June 2016 • 67

The Spanish in Georgia: A Forgotten History

The Museum on Main at the Statesboro Convention and Visitors Bureau will open its newest exhibit on the evening of May 4, 2016. The Spanish in Georgia: A Forgotten History will introduce visitors to the fascinating 200-year history of Spanish exploration, settlement, missions, and interactions with the Native Americans in Georgia. Long before Oglethorpe founded the first

English settlement in Georgia, the Spanish had been exploring and settling the area. In 1526, Lucas Vazquez de Ayllon and 600 colonists using Indian trails moved along the Georgia coast and established a shortlived colony near Sapelo Sound. For the next century and a half, Spanish explorers crisscrossed the state seeking riches and resources. More importantly, the Spanish established a large system of missions to

convert and instruct the Native Americans in the Catholic faith. Together, the Spanish and the Indians created dynamic social and economic relationships that became a significant part of North America’s early religious, economic, and social history. The exhibit will include a recreation of a portion of a mission wall, and feature stunning colonial Spanish artifacts from the collection of Michael and Monica VanWagenen. As filmmakers and enthographers, the VanWagenen’s have long been studying and documenting Latino American history and have developed an important collection generously lent for this exhibit. The Museum on Main is a cooperative project between the Statesboro Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Georgia Southern University Museum and the Department of History. “We’re grateful for our partnership with Georgia Southern in bringing this new fascinating exhibit on ‘The Spanish in Georgia’ to the Museum on Main at the Visitors Center. Statesboro’s visitors and tourists are eager to learn about the history of our area, and we find they especially enjoy the interactive experience the Museum offers,” stated Becky Davis, Convention & Visitors Bureau Executive Director. Summer Activities Keep Your Kids Mentally, Physically Fit

For most people, the thought of summer conjures up images of beaches, water parks and sunshine. For me, however, summer is a potential nightmare. It means my children — ages 10, 12, 13 and 15 — will be at home, every day, for almost two months. It means they will zone out on video games and television, rousing themselves occasionally to engage in arguments, skirmishes and all-out war over who gets to hold the remote (or something just as trivial). In short, it means my nightmare becomes reality...unless we find a way to redirect their energy. According to Brandonn Harris, Ph.D., associate professor of sport and exercise psychology at Georgia Southern, the best way to redirect that energy is through physical activity. It not only keeps kids physically healthy, but mentally healthy as well. “Sedentary lifestyles and being inactive can lead to several different physical and mental health-related consequences,” said Harris. “So children are frequently encouraged to get around 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day.” Getting kids to be active for 60 minutes sounds like a tall order, especially for parents who struggle to get them to leave the house for five minutes. Harris says that with the right activities and the right kind of encouragement, however, your kids can start developing a habit of active play that will improve their health and their attitude. Summer Camps Summer camps and sports camps are a great way to get your child engaged in physical activity. It’s a chance for them to form new friendships and teach them vital social skills they won’t get when they’re alone. “Socially, when children are not engaged and interactive with other children their age, they are missing wonderful opportunities to communicate effectively, to problem solve and cooperate and to learn how to compete appropriately,” said Harris. In addition, camps give kids a chance to try their hand at a variety of activities anbegin to discover their talents and abilities,

which helps build their self-confidence as well. There are a number of camps in the Statesboro-Bulloch County area, many of which are hosted at Georgia Southern. Backyards and Parks If your schedule or your pocketbook won’t support the summer camp route, Harris says the backyard is actually one of the most popular and accessible places for kids to be physically active. Instead of paying for a week at camp, parents can invest in balls, bats, Frisbee® discs or hula hoops to use in backyard play. If your kids aren’t interested in sports, try investing in a sprinkler or Slip‘N Slide® for water games, or get them a bunch of old cardboard boxes and packing tape to make forts and mazes. If your backyard isn’t big enough for games, Statesboro and Bulloch County have a wealth of great public parks, playgrounds, trails and a water park to provide hours of fun for you and your children. Technology is Your Friend If your kids are like mine, they are unable to function without video games. Gamers are difficult to lure away from screens, especially when the only rewards are sunshine and physical exertion. “In a lot of homes right now, we see children in front of computer screens, phones and television,” said Harris. “We can actually use that technology and encourage kids in ‘exergaming’ — video game-based methods of physical activity.” Most gaming consoles now have sensors and controllers that monitor physical movement, and offer games that are scored based on how vigorously players move. In addition, Harris says that accelerometers, which measure physical activity in applications like the Fitbit® and Nike FuelBand®, encourage kids to become more aware of their physical activity and can foster a healthy competitive, improvement-based environment by counting the number of steps they

take each day. Positive Reinforcement No matter what activities you choose to provide for your children, Harris says the most important thing is to create a “positive norm” of physical activity with your kids. In other words, don’t punish your children with outside time. Encourage them in active play, highlighting the benefits. Let them choose the kinds of things they’d like to do and join them whenever possible. This encouragement and time is a real investment in your children, and can have farreaching benefits to their well-being. “It’s truly an investment because the benefits are so numerous,” said Harris. “The more physically active they are at this age — children and adolescents — the more likely they will be to continue that activity into adulthood.” May/June 2016 • 75

Joy Is Of the Will Which Knows Triumph

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about people who have excelled in spite of great handicaps. Some of my heroes have overcome extreme difficulties to make contributions to our world. They prove the truth of what Robert Louis Stevenson said over a century ago: “Life is not a matter of holding good cards, but of playing a poor hand well.” He knew what he was talking about. Not only was he sickly during childhood; in his adult years he was an invalid, suffering from tuberculosis. But instead of spending his life doing nothing, complaining about what could have been, he wrote great novels and poetry, mostly from his sickbed. We would be so much poorer without his novels, Treasure Island, The Strange Case of Dr.

Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Kidnapped. Fred Biletnikoff played football for Florida State University back in the 1960s before I left Florida. He was an All-American. I got to see him play at FSU which was not far from my hometown. From college he went to California, to play professional football for the Oakland Raiders. John Madden, coach of the Raiders, said about Biletnikoff, “If he had played up to his capabilities he would never have been in the NFL. He was slow, he wasn’t very big, and he was even a little bit clumsy. I used to scream at him from the sidelines, ‘Don’t fall down, Fred! Don’t fall down!’ All he could ever do was catch passes and score touchdowns.” He knew how the game was played, understood

teamwork, and had figured out moves that would take him where the defense wasn’t.” He was a star! Louisa May Alcott was told as a teenager that she couldn’t write, didn’t have the talent for it. Those criticisms didn’t stop her, however. Her book, Little Women, published in 1868, which tells a coming-of-age story set during the Civil War, is considered to be one of the finest books written in the mid1800s. It’s a good thing she didn’t believe what had been said about her. And then there’s my super-hero writer, James Michener. I’ve read almost all of his 45 books. I just can’t bring myself to read the remaining few and live in a world with no more Michener to read. Most of his books are massive historical novels. He is the best writer I know at developing the backgrounds of the people in his books. By the time you read one of his novels you know everything you need to know about the heritage of each character going back several generations. That became so significant to me when I found out that James Michener didn’t even have a birth certificate. He was abandoned as an infant and never knew who his parents were. He was taken in by a Mrs. Michener, and was later adopted into the family. While he seemed to come to peace with this vacuum in his life, it is easy to see why he found pleasure in going deep within the lineages of his characters. One of the Michener family members was not happy that James was adopted into the family. In a rage of jealousy, mean spiritedness, and sheer ugliness, this anonymous Michener wrote hate-filled notes to James every time a new book was published. The notes would contain messages like, “You’re still a fraud! Still using a name that isn’t yours! Still trying to be better than you are!” Can you imagine receiving such a note every time you wrote a new book? Over 45 times!? But James Michener took it as a challenge and kept doing what he was gifted to do. You can see why he’s one of my chief heroes. I admire people who excel in spite of their difficulties. Everything doesn’t have to be just right before we can make our contributions. We can all be overcomers and make the world a better place. May/June 2016 • 77

COWBOY

He walked into the up-scale lounge, moved along the deep mahogany bar and leaned in. Soon a cold longneck was sitting before him. He looked at himself in the mirror. What he saw was a sharp face, strong eyes, and a Stetson cowboy hat. The hat was his prize. He had always wanted one. Now at twenty-three, he would wear it when he went out. It allowed him to be the cowboy he dreamed of when he was little. She had arrived an hour earlier. Her best fiend had said during coffee, “John and I are going out tonight; come go with us. “It won’t hurt a thing. God knows, all you do is stay home. Being engaged is wonderful, but heavens, every now and then you’ve got to have a break. You know Jimmie will understand.” Now she sits with her friends. Music fills the room. It mixes with laughter. It slides across the faces of the

lonely; it captures the motion of the couples dancing. The cowboy takes a sip of his longneck and turns around. He tilts his hat back a bit. He takes in the room. He’s dressed in a blue oxford buttondown shirt, jeans, and boots. He’s neat. When he moves the bottle to his lips, it’s done right. When he puts his hands in his pockets and rocks with the rhythm of the music, it’s nice. She? She is pretty. She is in love. Her fiancé is in officer candidate school. He has been away six weeks. They have six more to go. She writes him every day. She sends him love notes and funny cards. “Anything, just to let him know I’m here.” Now, in the din of this lounge, her girlfriend’s special fellow asks her to dance. It’s a fast-paced number. She turns loose and has four minutes of fun. They move back to their table. This is when the cowboy notices her.

His look is not a “hit on.” It’s as if he’s looking at a picture of a western sunset. Something that comes from his boyhood dreams. He motions to the bartender for another bottle. He talks to the guy on his right. He’s an accountant. “Now and then, I just need a breather. Numbers get heavy after awhile. Got to stop now and then and refocus.” “Know what you mean,” the cowboy replies. “I get thirsty myself, after a hot day on Dad’s ranch.” He turns and looks at the pretty lady. She is not part of his boyhood dreams. She is something much more. She is today’s dream. She is a lady like he’s never before seen. The music goes on. The DJ announces a birthday. A group in the far corner stands up and yells. An embarrassed red-faced guy waves and realizes he is loved. The mood changes. The DJ says, “All right everybody, it’s quiet time for all you romantics. I’m pulling back and it’s gonna be lace and grace.” With that, laughter turn to quiet and the lights are low except for the crystal glass sphere turning slowly, throwing a calligraphy of diamonds onto the dancers. The lady’s friends have responded to the DJ’s invitation. Now she sits alone, admiring her engagement ring. The deep bondage it reflects. “Excuse me ma’am.” She looks up surprised. “I wonder if you’d mind allowing me a dance? It’s all right if you don’t want to,” he quickly added. The pretty lady looked into his face a long time and then with an easy motion took his hand. For him the floor was empty except for the two of them. She was looking up smiling. She was soft and smelled good. The music finished. He walked her back to the table. “Thank you,” he said. “Cowboy,” she laughed, “are you shy?” “Never have been until now,” he grinned. Later as the lady drove home, the fragrance of his cologne drifed about her. She turned on the radio. . . . Willie was singing, “Mama, don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys. . .” May/June 2016 • 81
