Doug fights for right

(Luke Hemer)

Doug Chappel is no stranger to taking centre stage, but even he admits to a few nerves ahead of his next performance bout. The Burnside comedian will exchange microphone for boxing gloves next month as he strives to change minds and make a difference in the community about violence against women. Two horrific attacks in Melbourne struck a chord with the veteran comic. Fellow comedian Eurydice Dixon was brutally raped and murdered in June 2018, and 19-year-old student Aiia Maasarwe suffered the same fate while on her way home from one of Chappel’s stand-up gigs in January. Chappel decided that entering a male dominated arena such as boxing would be a good way to spread his message. He will fight a yet to be named opponent at Melbourne Pavilion on August 2. “Boxing is traditionally a male-oriented sport, but it’s between two consenting people … maybe we can get some change in the community,” he said. A percentage of the bout’s ticket money will go to family violence charity Impact. Tickets: teamellis.com.au/ pretender-to-contender.html. Carpark cuts hit traders By Tate Papworth A reduction in the number of carparking spaces in the VicRoads building in Sunshine could significantly impact businesses, local traders have warned. A proposed development of the building will remove 90 carparking spaces and a childcare centre, replacing them with two additional levels of office space and taking the building to a total of nine storeys. Sunshine Business Association president Carson Luk welcomed the move to bring more office workers into the area, but not at the expense of a reduction in carparking. “We have immediate concerns on carparking

for customers visiting the town centre and for traders loading and unloading goods,” he said. “Small businesses around the town centre, and especially the traders adjoining the VicRoads building site, have left or are beginning to leave the area due to the ongoing and significant losses attributed back to the loss of carparking spaces for their customers. “Sunshine traders have already suffered significant lost revenue attributed back to a lack of carparking and any further reduction in carparking … will further increase this revenue loss.” Brimbank councillors reluctantly agreed to approve a planning permit subject to the applicant entering into a section 173

agreement, under which it would provide a cash contribution to the council to be put toward improving transport in the area. The council decided that any rejection of the application would likely be over-ruled by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal and thus the best option was to gain a financial win from the situation. Cr John Hedditch said he felt pincered by the dilemma. “This particular site and the history of it continues to create attention within the community,” Cr Hedditch said. “We have the VicRoads site, the Withers Street carpark, which is a source of daily frustration for local residents. It’s a bit of a

nightmare. We’ve had a development approval, we’ve had changes, we’ve had VCAT decisions which have over-ridden council decisions and we’ve ended up with this before us. “My gut tells me we need to support more carparking in the area, my gut tells me we won’t win at VCAT if we don’t put this through. “With what we have in front of us … I think, sadly, that I have to put my vote towards supporting this, even though I know it will have an impact on carparking in the area immediately.” The application was passed by council pending the introduction of the section 173 agreement.

Electronic Waste Recycling

www.buzz.brimbank.vic.gov.au What is e-waste? If it has a plug, battery or cord and is unwanted, it’s e-waste. This includes everything from old mobile phones, computers, monitors, printers, televisions, CD players, refrigerators, heaters, toasters and other white goods. Remember, large e-waste items such as whitegoods like fridges and washing machines can be recycled through Council’s At-Call Hard Waste Service.

New e-waste disposal methods We’ve introduced new and easy ways for you to dispose of electronic waste (e-waste) at several new drop-off points in Keilor, Sydenham, Sunshine, Deer Park and St Albans, all at no charge. The launch of the new disposal points follows the Victorian Government’s state-wide ban on e-waste being sent to landfill from 1 July 2019.

E-waste cannot be discarded with your regular garbage collection as it contains hazardous material, and can be harmful to the environment and human health. It must be disposed of at one of the designated drop-off points.

For a list of e-waste drop-off points across Brimbank visit brimbank.vic.gov.au/ewaste or contact us at environment@brimbank.vic.gov.au or 9249 4000.

Runway causes a noise in Keilor By Tate Papworth Keilor residents are calling for the return of a noise monitor as Melbourne Airport deliberates on a direction for its long awaited third runway. An east-west runway was nominated as the airport’s preferred option in 2013. But last month the airport revealed that a north-south runway might provide a “superior outcome”. A north-south option would mean additional traffic over Brimbank suburbs, including Keilor.

Worried Keilor residents say the extra traffic will only compound already high noise levels and are calling for the return of a noise monitor. One was removed by Airservices Australia in 2016. Keilor Residents and Ratepayers Association spokesperson Susan Jennison said the absence of a monitor had been an ongoing issue ever since then. “They (noise monitors) are not that expensive and another could have been established within the Parks Victoria site, for example at the former Horseshoe Bend Farm site,” she said.

“Negotiations started on that a few years back. It’s like they really don’t want to know the accurate records for the public to find out about.” Virginia Tachos, a fellow Keilor resident, said additional noise could have health impacts on the community. “Another north-south alignment for the third runway will have significant impacts on Keilor, particularly as it is directly under the north-south flight path,” she said. “All other major cities have a curfew. Melbourne Airport doesn’t and I’m concerned

about the impacts on my community’s health with increased flights and noise, as well as the removal of the aircraft noise monitor from Keilor.” Melbourne Airport insists it is yet to make a decision on the third runway and says it will take all community feedback on board. The airport is holding a series of community workshops: In Keilor on July 16 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm; in Sunshine on July 18 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm; and in Taylors Lakes on August 3 from 10am-noon and 2-4pm. This came on the back of winning the Victorian championship in April. “I’m looking at the nationals in a month for an Australian title and then the next one is Tasmania,” Sefokuli said. “It’s really self-based how hard you would like to push yourself. “Personally, I want to do more than just

A Brooklyn martial artist is next month vying for a national title after being named Brazilian jiu jitsu state champion in both Victoria and New South Wales. Sefo Sefokuli started training at Altona North academy, Rise Mixed Martial Arts, just three years ago. The statewide ban on sending electronic waste (e-waste) to landfill came into effect last week. The ban means residents can no longer dispose of items such as mobile phones, computers, monitors, printers, televisions, CD players, refrigerators, heaters, toasters and other white goods in their regular rubbish. With the ban now in place, Brimbank council has established e-waste drop-off points at Keilor, Sydenham, Sunshine, Deer Park and St Albans. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve urged the community to take advantage of the free system, but encouraged a sustainable mindset. “We have set up lots of options including upgrading the Resource Recovery Centre in Keilor where you can take e-waste items like computers, televisions, printers and car batteries and new drop-off points to collect small e-waste items, to make it as easy as possible to recover and recycle e-waste,” she said. “Consider donating your unwanted items to a charity or offering them to friends or family. You might be surprised how much use your device still might have.” Larger items such as fridges and washing machines should be recycled through the hard waste service, which has recently moved to an “at call” model. Ranger program boost By Laura Michell More children will be able to explore the great outdoors following a funding boost for a Parks Victoria junior ranger program. The program, which runs at Brimbank Park and Organ Pipes National Park during school holidays, encourages kids to explore Victoria’s parks with the help of a Parks Victoria ranger. Children can take part in activities such as historic tours, night walks and rambles. Participants in last week’s program at Organ Pipes National Park spent the day searching for minibeasts in Jacksons Creek, which were then examined under a microscope. Outdoor adventure retailer, Macpac, recently donated $400,000 to the program, which will help Parks Victoria to run the program over the next three years. Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the partnership will help Parks Victoria to engage with new audiences. “This partnership with Macpac will help grow the much-loved program, connecting more children and their families with the environment and creating advocates for the future of conservation,” she said. “Everyone should have the opportunity to connect with nature, especially children. I encourage all families to take advantage of this great program. Parks Victoria education and interpretation officer James Adams said the junior ranger program was designed to inspire curiosity. “At Parks Victoria, we believe nature is essential for human health and wellbeing. Spending time playing and learning outdoors provides children with developmental benefits such as improved physical and mental health and social connections,” he said. Details: juniorrangers.com.au

The town centres of Deer Park, Keilor, St Albans, Sunshine and Sydenham are also highlighted as places to see, each with their own ‘visitor tip’ for those traveling through the area. Brimbank’s many natural wonders, Brimbank Park and the Organ Pipes are also prominently featured as are key walking and cycling trails, which are mapped out for those who like to keep active. Non-emergency number rolls out By Laura Michell A non-emergency police phone line trialled in Brimbank earlier this year is now operating statewide. The 24-hour line will take calls about non-urgent matters such as property damage, theft, noise complaints and lost property, freeing up triple-0 callers. People can access the line by calling 131 444. The line is staffed by civilian call-takers at a Ballarat contact centre, under the supervision of police officers.

‘‘

These new avenues of contact to police will be available 24/7 - Shane Patton

’’

The line was trialled in Brimbank, Hume and Ballarat earlier this year. Victoria Police acting chief commissioner Shane Patton said more than 70,000 calls had been made to the police assistance line since the trial began in February. He said the trial had helped police refine the

call process ahead of the statewide roll out. An online reporting portal has also been created. Acting Chief Commissioner Patton said the additional channels should improve the community’s access to police. “These new avenues of contact to Victoria Police will be available 24/7, making it easier for the community to engage with police for non-emergency help, advice and support,” he said. “These new channels will also reduce the amount of time police spend taking reports on non-urgent crimes, and will improve the way

we prioritise and respond to these matters.” According to police, almost 30 per cent of calls to triple-0 are for non-urgent matters. “The triple-0 number for police, fire and ambulance remains and should be used if immediate attendance from these agencies is critical such as a threat to life or a crime occurring,” Acting Chief Commissioner Patton said. Police will launch a 12-month advertising campaign to alert people to the assistance line. The online reporting portal can be accessed via police.vic.gov.au/palolr

Run to promote health In an Australian first, a Caroline Springs medical centre is running a trial partnership with a popular fun run as a way of promoting a healthy lifestyle to their patients. Modern Medical is working with the Park Run at Brimbank Park on July 27, with the aim of a permanent partnership between the clinic and the weekly fun run. Medical director Dr Jenny Maxwell said it was another way of treating their patients, and promoting a healthy lifestyle. “We wanted to incorporate social prescribing into our day to day work as GPs, and the way we want to do that is through Park Run,” Dr Maxwell said. “It’s a free event, every weekend, 5km, and there are so many across Melbourne that there is often one nearby to tie in with. “There is no formal partnership yet, but the idea is that our staff will go along on the day to volunteer, and we’re spreading the word with

our patients to come along and hopefully make it a regular thing. “Social prescribing is about not going to the doctor and getting a pill for your blood pressure or something like that, but about lifestyle modifications. “So instead of telling people to go to the gym, why not come down for a walk or run once a week. “We’re hoping that the informal nature, and the ease of doing it at your own pace in a community of like-minded people will see a lot of people take it up. “The response so far from patients has been great, so hopefully we see lots of people there on the day.” The Brimbank Park Run is held in Brimbank Park at 8am on Saturday mornings. Council on the path to safety By Tate Papworth

Sam’s the man for junior footy A Sydenham student is set to officiate one of the country’s largest football carnivals. Sam Dunne said his selection in the School Sport Victoria, Australian football umpire’s team was a fantastic opportunity. “To umpire a tournament with kids from all around the country is really cool,” he said. “I did it last year and really enjoyed it, so I’m looking forward to heading down to Launceston.” Dunne said it was also a terrific opportunity to expand his skills. “I get to umpire with people from all over the country, so it’s a good way to get to know each other and learn a thing or two.” At 17, Dunne now has more than four years of experience and hopes to continue developing his career. “I just lost interest in playing footy, but really wanted to stay involved in the game, which is when I turned to umpiring. “It’s been better than I thought it would be, I really love being around football competitions.” While he’s enjoyed the ride, Dunne said there’s been a few challenges along the way. “I think the biggest thing you have to develop is a thick skin on the field,” he said. The School Sport Australia Championships will be held from July 27 to August 3.

Footpath trip hazard levels have been lowered as part of the Brimbank council’s new road management plan. Under the plan, which was formally adopted by the council last month, footpath trip hazards have been lowered from 50mm to 25mm, meaning anything over 25mm will need to be removed. Mayor Lucinda Congreve said the council will also take responsibility for repairs to footpath section of driveways under the plan. “A review of the existing Road Management Plan had identified a number of opportunities to improve service standards relating to how council performed its road management duties,” she said. “Under the new road management plan … council will now take responsibility for the footpath section of driveways, which was previously the responsibility of the property owner. “The good news for residents is that council will fund these footpath repairs across driveways.” During the 2018-19 financial year, more than 900 kilometres of council-owned roads were inspected and assessed to help plan road maintenance and improvements. In addition, just over 1600 kilometres of footpath was also inspected and maintained. The new plan sets out the council’s inspection intervals and response times. Cr Congreve said it will ensure all council footpaths and roads are kept in good condition. “We’re committed to keeping the city’s roads and footpaths in good condition,” she said. “We have a duty of care to road users.” To view the plan visit www.brimbank.vic. gov.au

Campaign rubbishes tip decision By Tate Papworth A leading campaigner has urged the community to help continue the fight against the proposed expansion of the Melbourne Regional Landfill at Ravenhall. Last month the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) approved an additional seven cells at the landfill, which will allow the site to operate until about 2036. The decision drew the ire of both the Brimbank and Melton councils and community groups.

Lawyers believe there are errors of law in the judgement - Marion Martin

’’

Stop the Tip lead campaigner Marion Martin said the decision was disappointing, but vowed to continue the fight. “We’ve been given information from lawyers that they believe there are errors of law in the VCAT judgment,” Ms Martin said.

“I believe the council’s have until the 15th of this month to lodge an appeal, so we’ll wait to see if they take it to the Supreme Court.” In a bid to push the councils to take the matter to the Supreme Court, Stop the Tip have created an online petition. Residents are asked to sign the petition which reads: “Dear Councillor, I am writing to urge you to continue fighting on behalf of our community to stop Cleanaway’s massive expansion of the Ravenhall Tip.” Ms Martin said it was vital those concerned

signed. “We really want to give the community one final opportunity to say something,” she said. “We’ve spent six years fighting this, but a lot of people don’t seem to get the information so we’re trying to spread the word on this push.” Both councils were still reviewing their options at the time of publication. The Home exhibition, launched on June 28, will feature the work of 14 skilled textile artists depicting where they have come from and various interpretations of what home means to them. From a portrait ‘painted’ with wool to installations spilling across the floor, the artists have weaved, crocheted and embroidered their stories. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the Home exhibition would be an exclusive first look at some striking pieces. “This is an impressive showcase of some never before seen textile artworks which I’m sure will attract many visitors,” Cr Turner said. “One of the special things about this exhibition is that it can speak to us all. The artworks celebrate belonging, urban life, family, community and everything in between.

“To imagine and create these fascinating and intricate works is a huge credit to the talent and patience of the artists.” The Home exhibition is the result of a two-year cultural development program, Home Sewn: Makers of Melton supported by the Victorian government through Creative Victoria. It brings together a range of contemporary and traditional textile art technique. Visitors will see skillfully crafted three-dimensional installations alongside equally impressive traditional wall hanging artworks. The exhibiting artists are all from the west and many took part in artist-in-residence workshops. The free exhibition will run at both libraries until August 11. Youth vote wins the day By Stephanie Stamatelatos A team of six young people from Overnewton College have successfully passed a Bill that proposes voluntary voting in state elections for 16-17 year olds at the YMCA Youth Parliament of Victoria. Emily Stevenson, Pamela Piechowicz, Mitchell Sprague, Jamie-Papworth-Dent, Donovan Quilty and Claudia Cutajar made up the team of Youth Parliamentarians who believe in the importance of providing youth with opportunities to engage in politics and the broader issues faced by the community. Youth Parliament is a program designed to give young Victorians between the ages of 16-25 a chance to be heard at the highest levels of state government on a wide range of issues relevant to young people’s lives. The students believe young people should be allowed to participate in state elections because the decisions impact them directly. “To design a government that is going to look after our future, you need the opinions of the people who are most affected by that future,” said Emily Stevenson. The Bill aligns the voting rights of the 16-17 year old age group with the other responsibilities that they adopt at age 16 such as obtaining a learner’s permit. During the debate, the students proposed a model of voting which reflects Scotland’s decision to lower the voting age for the Independence referendum. The Bill tabled by the Overnewton students will be passed onto the relevant minister for consideration. Since 1987, more than 30 Youth Parliament Bills have gone onto become Victorian legislation. Stephanie Stamatelatos is a member of the YMCA Youth Press Gallery.

Brimbank in Canberra call Brimbank council has had its voice heard on a national stage. Councillors travelled to the nation’s capital last month to attend the Australian Local Government Association’s (ALGA) 2019 National General Assembly. Brimbank put forward three motions at the assembly, focusing on climate change, funding for pre-school and kindergarten and gambling regulation. Mayor Lucinda Congreve said it was a great opportunity to give Brimbank’s priorities a national audience. “Our motion on climate change recognises the impact of climate change on local communities around Australia. We want the federal government to adopt and implement evidence-based greenhouse emission reduction targets. “We also called for a push towards the federal government to ensure three and four-year-old children can access quality early education through permanent ongoing funding to the national pre-school and kindergarten program.” Brimbank also tabled a motion calling for better gambling regulation. “We also want to see the federal government close existing loopholes which allows gambling advertisements to be broadcast on television and radio during children’s viewing and listening hours,” Cr Congreve said. All approved motions will be referred to the ALGA board to support policy initiatives.

Call for rubbish plan for state By Tate Papworth Brimbank council has thrown its support behind calls for a state-wide waste management policy. A June report by the Victorian Auditor-General’s Office Recovering and Reprocessing Resources from Waste revealed a number of issues with the response to resource recovery. The report said as a result of these issues, Victoria’s reliance on landfill isn’t being minimised and a significant amount of waste

sent to landfill could be recycled. It also stated that the lack of a state-wide policy has resulted in government agencies responding to waste management issues in an ad-hoc and reactive manner. The report made 22 recommendations to agencies, including Sustainability Victoria, Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, the Environment Protection Authority, and the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said the council will write to the Victorian Minister

for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio requesting the government implement all 22 recommendations from the report. “Without a state-wide policy, environment agencies have not been able to effectively prioritise their limited time and resources,” Cr Congreve said. “Markets and infrastructure have not been effectively planned to manage the state’s waste. This is not good enough,” Cr Congreve said. Cr Virginia Tachos said the community needed confidence in the system.

“In 2016/2017 Victorians generated and managed almost 12.9 million tonnes of waste, of which metropolitan Melbourne accounted for about 80 per cent,” Cr Tachos said. "Sustainability Victoria estimated that Victorians recovered 67 per cent of waste generated for recycling, and sent the remaining 33 per cent to landfill. “Our community – like others across the state and the nation – invest their time in separating bottles, papers and other recyclables. We need to be confident that these materials are being properly recycled.”

Body work in Brooklyn Pupils at Annunciation Primary School in Brooklyn have received a visit from Melbourne University medical students to learn about the human body and staying healthy. In 2016, a small team of university students established a not-for-profit organisation called ASHA Lectures to work with primary and secondary students across Victoria, especially those who may be at a disadvantage in terms of access to resources and opportunities. ASHA Lectures co-president Krisha Changrani said the session with year 5 and 6 pupils at Annunciation had been part of the Bodyworks series dedicated to learning all about the heart. “The whole point of it is to get them really interested about taking care of their health, understanding the human body and … science in general,” she said. “We do try to make these sessions really interactive, so at Annunciation we got

stethoscopes out for the kids to listen to each other’s hearts; using blood pressure monitors.” ASHA Lectures has 30 volunteers delivering sessions for VCE students and Speak Up debating workshops in addition to the Bodyworks series. Participating schools contribute a small donation, which goes to the ASHA Charity in South-East Asia for healthcare and education projects. Details: ashalectures.org Goya Dmytryshchak

There was uproar in the Legislative Assembly last Thursday when both local member for Sunshine Bill Fogarty and the member for Werribee Dr K. Coghill demanded that the Government give the people of Sunshine and Keilor the right to vote in local government elections.

Ardeer is set to get a range of new community and environmental services from Sunshine Council and a better deal from state and federal government agencies if council endorses a report it received on the suburb’s shortcomings last night (Tuesday).

One of the worst illegal landfills in the western suburbs was last week uncovered in an Environment Protection Authority (EPA) swoop on swampland in Sunshine. The EPA ranked the landfill, behind factories in the Ballarat Road industrial strip, west of the Melbourne-Bendigo railway line, as the sixth worst on a list of 100 it is presently investigating in the west.

The family of a Sunshine teenager with a rare genetic disorder is calling on local businesses to support a fund-raiser to make their son’s life more comfortable. Vanessa and James Scott’s lives were turned upside down in 2000 when their energetic son Max, then aged six, was diagnosed with Sanfilippo syndrome, a degenerative condition that will eventually cut his life short.

MY BRIMBANK Dr Tiro Othomile took over as resident GP at Wyperfeld Medical Clinic in January. He spoke with Tate Papworth about his role and the health issues facing Brimbank.

I’ve been a local GP here since January. It’s been a really good experience. It’s a bit different than other areas I’ve worked, but mainly for the better. What do you like most? I really like the vibe here. I love the relaxed atmosphere here. I find the people out here are more easy going. I also really like the diversity of the population. What could be done better? I think screening for things like bowel cancer, breast screening and cervical cancer could be done a whole lot more. I also think mental health awareness is something that needs to be spoken about more. Is a lack of awareness with mental health issues something you’ve picked up on in Brimbank? I don’t know if there’s stigma towards it or if people just aren’t aware of the services out there which can help. When I was working

in Shepparton, a lot of people used to take advantage of mental health plans, but here not a lot of people are taking advantage of them. If you probe people here they’ll talk about it, but they’re not at a stage where they’ll seek help. What’s the biggest issue facing GP’s in Brimbank? We have a lot more people out here on health care cards and services like that. There’s challenges that arise from that because things like an MRI aren’t covered. A lot of people might not be able to afford things like that, so it can be a challenge to adapt around that. You end up becoming a lot more efficient in diagnosing things and utilising alternate scans and options. And what about cancer screening challenges? Things like the national bowel cancer test is something not being utilised. There’s a bit of resistance there. We spend a lot of time pushing our patients to do those tests, but when you talk about things like bowel screening, people become a bit hesitant. We’re really trying to promote education in that area.

Morgan’s IGA has recently been given a fresh new look. (Luke Hemer)

Morgan’s IGA is the heart of Sunshine Morgan’s IGA, the anchor of a vibrant shopping hub in Sunshine West, has been going strong for eight years now, providing locals with the valued presence of a well-stocked supermarket. Supplying extensive lines of groceries, liquor, deli goods and fresh produce, family-owned Morgan’s has recently been given a fresh new look. Manager Jay Morgan explains what’s in store. “For starters, our fresh produce area has expanded while our aisles have been shortened,” he says. “This allows freer movement for our customers – always a good thing. “The whole place looks fresher and brighter … we know that will enhance our shoppers’ experience.

FOOD REVIEW

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a slice of heaven in Keilor Park We are delighted to herald the arrival of new Greek baking emporium on the smallish shopping strip on Fosters Road in Keilor Park. Theo’s has all your sweet Greek dreams covered at great prices. Parking is no problem. And it’s simply a cool place to be. We suspect most customers treat it as a shop, taking their goodies home. But for eating-in purposes, the place is set up in simple cafe style. Theo’s is very much about the sweeter side of life, but there are limited savoury options available. We love our slices of spanakopita ($6). Rich and flavoursome in a home-style way, they eat bigger than they look. And at a place in which we would’ve been unsurprised about being presented with plastic plates and implements, we are very happy to have our lunch accompanied by real-deal unplastic gear, along with water. For dessert, Bennie opts for a profiterol creation ($5). He enjoys it, but perhaps not as much as he’d been hoping – likely because the chocolate is not the dark, more bitter kind he likes these days. He plainly envies my politiko ($5). And in that he’s right on the money – as this is superb. It’s bit like a heftier Greek version of tiramisu, the base of syrupy semolina cake topped by a layer of cream and plenty of powdered coffee. It is wonderful – and so healthy, too!

THEO’S GREEK CAKES Address: 11 Fosters Road, Keilor Park Phone: 0434 099 450 Our $4 cafe lattes are a fine foil for all this sweet heaven. As an added bonus, a delicious trek to Theo’s can become a one-stop outing that includes, a few doors away, Frank’s Supermarket, a happy business a bit like a scaled-down version of Altona Fresh or Mediterranean Wholesalers in Brunswick. Though, sadly, it is closed during our Sunday visit. Theo’s joins the D’s Souvlaki in building a whole new food vibe at Keilor Park.

There’s certainly no shortage of space in this elegant residence, on offer for the first time since it was built. It has a design style verging on opulent, with eye-catching architectural lines and lavish use of quality materials in large gallery-like rooms. 43 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 9, 2019

SPORT Young guns bode well for Caroline Springs’ future The future was on show for Caroline Springs in a 41-point win over Point Cook in the Western Region Football League division 1. The Lakers blooded starlets Tyler Gysberts and Tate Wood into the senior line-up and the under-16 eligible players had an instant impact. Gysberts was one of the stand-out players in the game across half back, while Wood kicked his side’s first goal and got mobbed by his teammates in celebration. Lakers football manager Marc Raak said the club was excited to see its juniors making the grade. “It’s sensational for our footy club to see some of these young kids coming through,” he said. “They’re going to have very good football futures. “It might not be at Caroline Springs, it may be higher up like the Western Jets over the next couple of years.” Gysberts took to senior football like a duck to water. The teenager played as a second or third tall and was effective one-on-one. When it was Gysberts’ time to go for the hard ball, he did not back away.

Caroline Springs forward Paul Medhurst has to contend with the goal post in his quest to reel in the ball. (Damjan Janevski)

“He was ready to go right from the start,” Raak said. “He didn’t shirk an issue.” In a see-sawing game at Saltwater Reserve, Caroline Springs took control of the contest in the second quarter to open up a 36-point lead at half time.

Point Cook would not go away, kicking six goals to one in the third quarter to get to within two points. A steadying goal from captain Keenan O’Shea early in the fourth quarter got the ascendancy back in favour of Caroline Springs and the visitors did not look back, piling on seven goals to zip in the final term. “Keenan kicked a nice goal early in the last quarter to get the momentum back our way,” Raak said. New recruit Paul Medhurst had a big impact as a small forward for Caroline Springs. The 37-year-old former Fremantle and Collingwood player did some eye-catching things inside forward 50 and finished with three goals. “He’s a very classy player, he showed his experience and that rubs off on to the younger kids as well,” Raak said. “He’s going to be a bit of a drawcard. “He hasn’t played footy for I think three years, but he’s kept himself pretty fit, so he’ll get even better once we play a few more games with him.”

Raak was also full of praise for Caroline Springs ruckman Caleb Ellis and onballer Stephen Brewer, two of the sides tireless operators on the day. Myles Dorman, Luke Edmondson and Brian Gill kicked two goals apiece for the Lakers. Caroline Springs will travel to play St Albans at Kings Park Reserve on Saturday. On paper, that is a daunting task, considering the Saints recent form and the fact the Lakers win over Point Cook was its first since May 11, but history says the Lakers are a big chance. Elsewhere in division 1, Deer Park showed no mercy on Sunshine in a 133-point beating at John McLeod Oval. Jase Perkins kicked seven for the Lions, while Kevin Klix and Chris Stewart booted six each. St Albans’ four-game win streak came to an end with a four-goal loss away to Hoppers Crossing. The Saints remain in the top five. Albion is still looking for its first win after a 126-point thrashing at the hands of Spotswood. Lance Jenkinson

Dragons on fire with solid win By Lance Jenkinson Sunshine Heights is no longer that speckle in the rearview mirror of the finals contenders in the Western Region Football League division 3. The Dragons are very much a part of the leading pack, sitting a game-and-a-half clear inside the top four and just a game-and-percentage off top spot. If you needed any more convincing of the Dragons’ might after they beat top side Glen Orden, it came on Saturday in a stirring 33-point win over Braybrook on the road at Pennell Reserve. “It was a pretty good win,” Dragons coach Damien Farnfield said. “It was a bit of an arm wrestle in the first half. “We were on top early in the first quarter and then Braybrook piled on a couple of goals and then a similar thing happened in the second. “After half time we were able to kick away.” In the past five months, Sunshine Heights has undergone a dramatic transformation. In February, there were fears that the Dragons might not even have enough players to field seniors and reserves sides. The Dragons are one of the few clubs who do not pay their players, so pulling out the cheque book to top up their list was not an option. Every single player who laces up the boots for the Dragons is doing it for the love of the game. Farnfield praised the players for helping with recruiting and bringing friends and former teammates to the club to create depth on the list. “We don’t pay anyone, we’re one of the few clubs that don’t pay, so recruiting is pretty hard on our end,” he said. “It goes back to the players, who actually got friends down and guys they used to play with in juniors and they’re just starting to click together now.” The late start to preseason for a lot of the playing group really hurt Sunshine Heights in the opening month. The Dragons lost two of their opening three games, with both losses by 11 goals or more. The cohesion they lacked in April is no longer an issue because Farnfield and the players have got their hands dirty on the training track and hit top gear. The Dragons have claimed all the big scalps not named Albanvale, who have beaten them twice in quite brutal fashion. It is a signal that the Dragons are one of the teams to beat in the race for the premiership. “It’s down to the players,” Farnfield said. 44 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 9, 2019

David McKinley takes a strong mark on the lead for Sunshine Heights. Below: William Tsam breaks away from the pack for Sunshine Heights. (Pictures: Damjan Janevski)

“They’ve done an awesome job and need to be acknowledged for the hard work they put in to make us competitive this year.” After a competitive first half against Braybrook on Saturday, Sunshine Heights took the ascendancy with a four-goal-to-two third quarter and never looked back. The damage was done for the Dragons by half back flankers Leo Eliepa and Roger Cini, who not only defended strongly, but also created offence from the back half. Jeremy Angelowitsch was given the task of marking star Braybrook forward Paul Cutajar-Milosev and the full back took the honours. Cutajar-Milosev went into the game averaging 4.27 goals per game and Angelowitsch kept him to two, which was a win for the Dragons.

Ruckman Steven Walters-Kepada was influential around the stoppages for the Dragons, while Mathew Serafin snared three goals, taking his tally to 34 for the season. A third win in succession has spirits high in the Dragons lair. “The reserves were able to get up as well and that slides them into fourth place, so things are looking good around the club at the moment,” Farnfield said. Sunshine Heights will host Laverton at Ainsworth Reserve on Saturday. Elsewhere in division 3, Albanvale stand firm in second place after a 29-point win over Laverton on the road. North Sunshine copped a 287-point hammering from Glen Orden, who kicked 49 goals for the game.

Fired-up Falcons keep on winning with focus on finals City West Falcons are not being weighed down by the chase for an undefeated Victorian Netball League championship division season. The Falcons made it a perfect 15-0 start to the season with a hard-fought 55-47 win over Peninsula Waves at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night. The superiority of the Falcons, a surprise to coach Marg Lind, has put them in a position to achieve the perfection of a 20-win season. “We’re not really thinking about it because at the end of the day it is what it is,” Lind said. “We’re in a position that we didn’t think we would be in and we’ve done better than we would’ve thought. “There’s been weeks where we could’ve lost games and we didn’t. “Of course, it would be nice to go through undefeated, but I don’t think it’s a focus of ours at all.” The prize at the forefront of Lind’s mind is defending City West’s premiership from last season.

Lind will continue to make her decisions based on what is best for the Falcons in the finals in August, not on staying unbeaten in the home-and-away rounds. The game against Peninsula Waves was a prime example, with Lind deciding it was time to try different combinations on court, just in

case they might be needed in the finals. She was even questioned by her coaching staff when she threw up some left-field moves. Those moves worked, but could have potentially spoiled the perfect season had they not come off. “I just think we’ve got to be open-minded and be prepared to reinvent the group now, which sounds stupid because they have been going well,” Lind said. “But I think to win finals we’re going to need some variations. “I think the team that best reinvents themselves in the next four or five weeks will have the best chance of winning.” There have been times throughout the season when City West had to dig deep in the dying minutes to secure wins. There was only a goal in it against Peninsula before the Falcons rallied late to win by eight. The Falcons simply do not crack under pressure, nor do they ever lose their appetite for a win. Lind believes the winning mentality is partly driven by the players and partly driven by her assistant coaches.

“That comes a little bit from Andrew McInerney, he’s a former state men’s netball player and he’s a real competitive defender,” Lind said. “And you’ve got ‘Richo’ [Nicole Richardson], an Olympian, sitting on the bench, and they hate losing. “There’s been weeks where I’ve been sitting back thinking we’re going quite well and they’re just demanding more and want the girls to play out four quarters every single week, which I think is nearly impossible, but that’s where the mentality comes from. “They could’ve easily lost this week. “With about four minutes to go, we were only a goal up. “We just seem to hang in there, we just seem to fight hard.” City West’s quest for 16 in a row will unfold against North East Blaze at the SNHC on Wednesday night. Big year for hoops star By Lance Jenkinson Up-and-coming Point Cook basketballer Paul Tsapatolis has already had a year to savour. But the 17-year-old is hoping the second half of the year will provide even more excitement. Tsapatolis played a significant role in Victoria Metro’s under-18 men’s team winning gold at the Basketball Australia junior national championships in Townsville in April. The towering centre was a powerhouse for the Big V, averaging 11.2 points and 9.2 rebounds a game across the tournament. He was also hard-nosed in defence, averaging 1.6 blocks and a steal a game. Tsapatolis represented Vic Metro twice in the under-16s and this was his second effort with the under-18s. “I reckon it was my best nationals out of the four years I’ve had,” Tsapatolis said. The gold medal will be a constant reminder for Tsapatolis of the mayhem that took place in the final against South Australia. Vic Metro was seemingly down and out, trailing by as much as 17 points in the second half, but it fought its way back to claim victory in dramatic circumstances. “It was a remarkable win and I won’t ever forget that,” Tsapatolis said. “The celebrations were just crazy. “We were all getting around each other and we got a 20-litre bucket full of ice and tipped it on our coach. “We stayed up all night enjoying our victory and probably didn’t get to bed until 5am.” Even staring at the massive deficit, Tsapatolis never gave up hope on Vic Metro making a comeback in that incredible match. The youngster from the Keilor Thunder harked back to the hard work the team had put in before the championships and the bond among the players as reasons why Vic Metro could claim the prize after being in a dire situation. “I believed it,” Tsapatolis said. “All our hard training and work got us belief to win that game. “There’s always a rivalry when we play an Adelaide team. It was unbelievably good to win that game.” Aside from heartily enjoying the spoils of victory, Tsapatolis had an even greater reason to smile soon after the nationals when he was invited to tryout for the Australian under-17 squad. He went into the camp full of confidence and made the final cut to represent Australia at the under-17 Oceania Championships in New Caledonia next month. “I had a great nationals, so I was feeling good about myself getting a try-out call,” he said. “The fact that I got chosen says that all of my hard work has paid off.”

Late goal joy for the Reds

It hit home for Tsapatolis that he would be representing Australia when he got his hands on a team shirt bearing his name. “The thing I valued most was seeing my surname on the back of an international jersey,” he said. “That was incredible.” Tsapatolis will be aiming for the starting centre role for Australia. But the Maribyrnong College year 11 student will play any role deemed necessary for the team as the players strive to become Oceania champions.

“It’s just an honour, at the end of the day, to play for my country,” he said. Tsapatolis is the July nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. Tsapatolis will receive $1000 and other prizes, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, to assist him in achieving his sports goals.

Sydenham Park found a dramatic late winner to earn a 1-1 draw with Keilor Park in Football Victoria men’s state league 1 soccer. The Reds earned a share of the points when Juso Julardzija found the back of the net in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time. That was a real blow for Keilor Park, which led for most of the game after a first-half goal from captain Goran Jozeljic. The point is crucial for Sydenham Park, keeping it within three points of league leaders Preston Lions, while Keilor Park remains mid-table. North Sunshine Eagles made some inroads on the top two with a 2-0 win over Banyule City. Ajak Panek and Daniel Dragovic scored for the Eagles. Caroline Springs George Cross mowed over FC Clifton Hill 2-0 after second-half goals to George Slefendorfas and George Tsiakalakis. In NPL, Melbourne Knights snapped a four-game losing streak with an upset 2-0 win over ladder leader Avondale. Atilla Ofli and Hamish Watson were the goal scorers for the ninth-placed Knights. Green Gully Cavaliers consolidated fifth spot on the ladder in a 0-0 draw with South Melbourne. In NPL 2 west, St Albans Saints pummelled North Geelong Warriors 3-0. In NPL women’s, Calder United got the better of Alamein 4-0. Aleks Sinclair, Catherine Zimmerman, Angela Beard and Polly Doran found the back of the net for Calder.
