CHAMPIONING THE BEST IN FLEET...

Welcome to Fleet World’s 2023 Great British Fleet Guide!

The Guide reflects the best products and services the fleet industry has to offer – many of which were showcased at this year’s Great British Fleet Event in Milton Keynes. Bigger and better than ever with more fleet suppliers, more expert insight from our Masterclass Conference speakers and more reasons for fleet operators to take time out of their busy schedules, the event – incorporating a busy Exhibition, Conference and Awards – was a resounding success!

2023 is extra special as it marks 25 years that Fleet World has been serving the fleet industry, while constantly evolving to encompass the shift to electrification. And that’s why this year’s unmissable GBFE

Masterclass Conference programme had such a strong EV focus. The sessions perfectly complemented the Exhibition, which focused primarily on the service providers to the UK’s fleet industry – and provided an excellent opportunity for industry figures to network.

Also, in the Great British Fleet Awards 2023, we recognised the very best in fleet, with a lavish black tie dinner and awards ceremony... and my congratulations go to the worthy winners for this year, all of whom you can read about within this Guide.

I would like to extend a personal thank you to all our visitors, exhibitors, event partners/sponsors, and conference Masterclass speakers for sharing their expert insight. It serves to underline the importance of a crucial sector that still accounts for the majority of new vehicle sales in the UK.

We look forward to seeing you again in 2024!

FLEET OPERATORS SHOULD NOT INVEST IN FLEET MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE...

(…says Bynx – who sell fleet software solutions)

Yes, our software solution has modules designed for fleet and mobility management. But here’s why end user fleet operators, (especially you SMEs and medium-sized businesses), should not invest in fleet software.

Managing the fleet is not your core business. Sweating the asset is – alongside providing transport and mobility for your staff, goods and services.

In this mature fleet market, fleet management tools should be provided as a service by the supply chain and your suppliers must include the provision of digital/self-service tools, available to both operator and driver. We’re definitely including OEMs and fleet mobility providers (such as vehicle leasing companies and rental companies) as those that should be providing end user fleet operators with all the tools they need. In fact, anyone who provides fleet management as a service (FMaaS) and does this to differentiate a core offering.

Simply put – it’s more cost-effective for you to outsource the parts of your business that don’t directly generate revenue.

Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your fleet management software...

1) Don’t invest in your own fleet and mobility management software system > no matter how basic.

2) That said > definitely don’t try and manage your fleet using spreadsheets or paper.

3) Choose wisely > select fleet mobility suppliers that provide a consultative approach. People that will help you implement and refine your processes, practices and reporting. You want service with their software tool provision!

4) Be smart > select supply partners that have strengths in the areas you don’t. Things like cost control, environmental issues, and compliance. You need a partner that supplements your business.

5) Customer satisfaction > choose fleet mobility partners who provide software and tools to help you deliver a better customer service experience - to both your internal (drivers) and external customers.

6) Acquisition to disposal > look for a supplier that provides a single tool for managing the whole fleet life cycle.

7) Auditing > ask suppliers to show you how they handle this complex yet critical area of fleet and mobility management.

Real-time, paperless data capture & exchange for things like maintenance requests, accident notification and vehicle checks should be available to both driver and operator. At work, or at home.

10) Be really clear > document defined SLAs (service level agreements) in support of tip 9 (see above).

11) Risk and Security > from the get-go, lock down who’s responsible for what. Know who owns data and who’s at the heart of data compliance.

12) Relationships > building strong relationships with suppliers helps them support you and your business goals.

13) Plan ahead > things will go wrong. Forward planning, in partnership with your suppliers, makes things easier for everyone.

14) Look forwards > feedback helps your suppliers make their product and services better. Work with them on those improvements and you’ll reap the benefits of a better product too!

INNOVATION IN RISK MANAGEMENT

Video telematics usage continues to grow among fleets but finding time to assess the footage can be a major pitfall. With VisionTrack’s NARA (Notification, Analysis and Risk Assessment) post-analysis solution, operators can simply “cut through the noise”, using AI technologies to automatically validate footage and generate alerts if necessary. Time-saving and potentially life-saving too.

INNOVATION IN ELECTRIC VEHICLES

For many fleets, especially return-to-home operators, the biggest barrier to switching to EVs is the lack of ability to charge at home. Co Charger’s community charging platform tackles this head-on. Its app and platform enable people with home or workplace charge points to rent them to local EV drivers. It’s simple, easy and mutually beneficial – and for fleets, it could make the difference between running an EV or being stuck with a costly and polluting ICE van.

FLEET MANAGEMENT SUPERSTAR

In just 18 months as commercial group fleet manager at the AA, Simon Ungless has significantly advanced efficiency and safety and reduced the environmental impact of the 3,000-strong fleet at the motoring association.

His work includes innovating on safety through the introduction of new technologies to protect drivers and vehicles while also cutting costs.

Despite the AA running a complex fleet of cars and operational vehicles to meet business needs, Simon has increasingly found ways to navigate the alternative fuels transition – including the arrival of the first hydrogenpowered breakdown vehicle in the form of a Hyundai Nexo.

He’s also taken a foremost role at industry events, webinars and in the AA’s free ‘yellow’ papers for fleets, sharing his best practice insights and making a difference to other operators.

FINANCIAL SUPERSTAR

Fleets of any size are always a big drain on company finances but for larger operators, effective management of fleet profit and loss is particularly critical to the overall performance of the business. Connells Group, the UK’s largest high street estate agency and property services provider, and its group fleet director Peter Jardine provide best practice examples of latest innovations and thinking in this area.

In the last year, changes to its 3,000-strong fleet have seen new funding methods introduced, along with blended fleet maintenance solutions, increased forward planning on vehicle orders and an NI-saving salary sacrifice scheme.

It all adds up to a total saving of £5.6m over a four-year period –and shows why we think Peter is a Financial Superstar.

Plans are also in place to transition the existing commercial fleet to zero emissions while charging infrastructure is being rapidly rolled out – including at drivers’ homes.

The future for the SSE fleet is green and the energy giant wants to be at the forefront of innovation and any alternative fuel developments. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for it.

SMALL VAN OF THE YEAR

TOYOTA COROLLA COMMERCIAL –

With fewer small vans on the market, Toyota might be seen as taking a gamble in launching the Corolla Commercial Hybrid last year. It has already found a ready market among fleets carrying light loads and it’s also a British success story – built and converted at Toyota’s Burnaston facility. It’s well-equipped, easy to drive and offers a realistic 60mpg.

Launched almost seven years ago, Stellantis’ medium van offers versatility with a choice of three different lengths, diesel or electric drive and a choice of panel or crew vans. There’s plenty of storage space in the cab, while the choice of driver assistance systems makes it attractive to fleets. It’s still the one to beat!

LARGE VAN OF THE YEAR

FORD E-TRANSIT –

New to the market last year, Ford has extensively re-engineered its large van for electric power and produced a cracking model packed with features, and offering excellent range up to 197 miles. There’s a choice of power outputs and a comprehensive model range between 3,500kg and 4,250kg too.

PICKUP OF THE YEAR

FORD RANGER –

The Ranger was the fifth best-selling light CV in the UK last year as well as the best selling pickup truck. The range is comprehensive including single, extended and double cab models and while a new model is just over the horizon, it’s not surprising that the current model is such a favourite with pickup buyers.

68

LIGHT TRUCK OF THE YEAR

IVECO DAILY –

Frequent model refreshes have helped to ensure that the Iveco Daily continues to sell well in the light truck sector. The backbone of Daily is its proper truck chassis and the breadth of the model range. It gets better to drive with each new generation, while specialist conversions for a range of customers help to give the Daily plenty of fleet appeal.

VAN OF THE YEAR

FORD E-TRANSIT –

Ford came from behind in the electric van market and with the launch of E-Transit last year, showed its competitors how it's done. E-Transit offers an extremely competitive product. It is the best large electric van on the market and a worthy winner of our Van of the Year Award 2023.

VAN MANUFACTURER OF THE YEAR

Ford set about re-inventing itself last year, gearing up for a future beyond the internal combustion engine. We know the future will be electric, whether using batteries or hydrogen fuel cells. Autonomous vehicles will be part of the picture too, which means connectivity will play a vital role, which in turn opens up other possibilities from predictive maintenance to other services that light CV fleets will become more reliant on in the future. Ford has made no secret of the fact that it needs to be more than a vehicle manufacturer and establishing Ford Pro opens a range of services that van customers need.

BEST EV CITY CAR

FIAT 500-e

Not all electric cars have to offer a huge number of miles from every charge – and the proof of that can be seen in the 500-e. The little battery powered car remains as popular as ever and, surprisingly, has little competition in the city car segment. That may change in the future but any contenders to the crown will have to be very good to displace the Fiat.
