From the President
Tim Reilly ’76
It has been energizing to meet so many members of the Long Blue Line, and the larger St. Xavier community, as I transition into the president’s position. Listening and learning is job one.
Fr. Howe generously offered, but it gave me a clear picture of how fortunate the St. X community has been to be under his leadership. And thanks to Jill Woods, the President’s Assistant, who keeps everything organized.
I appreciate the generous efforts of so many who are committed to making the transition smooth. First, I need to thank the board and specifically the search committee and search Chair, Greg Achten ’82. Your confidence and trust will be met with all the passion, energy and skill I have. Ann Berger, Board Chair, has organized the board and assigned each person a role in the transition and has been the key pin in keeping us all on time and on mission. The St. X community and I are fortunate to have her in this key leadership role. Principal Tyrrell and I have worked together informally for several years now and we look forward to focusing daily on the same mission. He and his staff have also been key players as the first of July approached.
One of my most energizing moments was a brief interaction with a student after a performance by Ensemble X, a St. X choral ensemble. I was thanking the students for finding, developing and sharing their talents. The courage, focus, perseverance, selfdiscipline and commitment that fuel their excellence is clear. They are incredible. One student quickly informed me that he did not sing. I repeated my appreciation directly to him to thank him for finding, developing and sharing his talent. After he again repeated that he did not sing. I asked him what he did, and he stated he ran the lights. I don’t know if I hid my smile from him or not, but I shared a bias I carry, saying something like “You know, crew members quietly end up making the world run.” He gave me a puzzled look and I tried a different approach. I told him, “You know, sometimes members of crew end up being the President of St. Xavier High School. So, thank you!” His understanding smile was definitely a “tank filler.”
You may know on June 5 Fr. Howe threw out the first pitch at a Cincinnati Reds game to me. His pitch is not the only excellent thing he has thrown my way. Fr. Howe has met with me and painted the scene of how he filled the role of president. I cannot claim that I was able to absorb all the information and coaching

You know, crew members quietly end up making the world run. I see myself as the crew chief in this amazing place. It is my hope to remove the hurdles and barriers that may impede each Bomber’s quest to become Open to Growth, Intellectually Competent, Religious, Loving, and Committed to Doing Justice. If we all get drained pursuing that worthy end, we can fall asleep each night knowing we are tired for the right reasons.

Gifts to X This fall/spring phonathon raised a grand total of $168,704.50 for the year (2017-18). That is $10,199.50 more than last fiscal year (2016-17). The Ignatian Summit The Ignatian Summit at St. Xavier High School brought a penguin, a cheetah, an owl and a beekeeper to the halls of St. X. The event kicked off with keynote speakers and photographers Ian Nichols and Ronan Donovan and writer and author David Quammen ’66 all from National Geographic. Local experts, including Thane Maynard from the Cincinnati Zoo, shared their insights to protect and preserve our world by living simply, farming, conserving water and so many other effective yet simple ways to reduce our environmental impact. Thank you to our benefactors who made this day possible: Darlene and Jeffrey Anderson, Marcia and Jim Kennedy ’69, Charlene and Bob Shaw ’66, and Nydia and Richard Tranter ’76.
Taste of Diversity Where can you be entertained, sample delicious foods and learn about different cultures from around the world all in one location? St. Xavier High School’s annual Taste of Diversity, sponsored by Parents Across Cultures and the World Languages Department has it all! Guests enjoyed fantastic foods from many countries and were entertained by student musicians including incredible guitar and bag pipe performances. Dance routines from the Filipino-American Cultural Performing Arts group were a sight to see. The event celebrates our diverse world.

2018 -Travaganza X
A Magical Mix of Fun and Purpose X-Travaganza 2018: Xperience the Magic marks the 45th year of St. Xavier’s flagship event. Through the years, countless members of the St. Xavier community have worked together in support of X-Travaganza, collectively raising millions of dollars to support St. Xavier’s educational and formational programs. X-Travaganza 2018 kicked off on Friday, March 9 with Opening Party 2018: Xpect the UnXpected. Opening Party Chairs Christine and David Dauenhauer and Julie and Gary Shipley welcomed over 600 guests to the decked-out Berning Gym. The St. Xavier Marching Bombers’ Drumline entertained the crowd as guests enjoyed a Lenten buffet and desserts, dropped tickets into the Basket Raffle and bid on Silent Auction items. Parents of the Freshmen Class of 2022 were welcomed to the St. X community by current President Fr. Howe, incoming President Tim Reilly ’76 and Principal Terry Tyrrell, who reinforced St. X’s commitment to the incoming freshman class, the importance of the summer study skills classes and early involvement in the numerous activities available at St. X. On Saturday evening March 10, X-Travaganza Chairs Michelle and Mark Nagle and Allyson and Mike Schumacher welcomed guests to Xperience the Magic in the Ellis Gym. Guests mingled and enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while browsing and bidding on more than 400 Silent Auction items. Under an arc of sparkling doves, whimsical Mad Hatter cards and black top hats, the lobby offered Golden Tickets (to win a Live Auction item before the auction started), Swag Bags, the Drink Raffle with Magic Hat craft beer and the coveted 2018 Duck Pond surprises. To begin the festivities, the guests settled into their seats and Fr. Howe led the attendees in prayer. The buzz rose again with the Grand Raffle ticket drawing for the exciting $5,000, $10,000 and $20,000
prizes. As the gourmet dinner was served, the fast-paced excitement of the Live Auction kicked off with auctioneer Mr. Lance Walker as the emcee. Live Auction packages included an Ireland Golf Trip, Broadway’s Hamilton NYC trip, Las Vegas Magic X-perience, Chicago Cubs rooftop tickets, a FC Cincinnati suite and many other fantastic items. Always an inspirational highlight of Live Auction, the X-Tend a Hand portion showcased the generosity of those who filled the room. Through the generosity of the entire St. Xavier community, X-Travaganza 2018 raised more than $870,000 to benefit all St. Xavier students. Thank you to X-Travaganza Director Cathy Cionni and her staff, the X-Travaganza 2018 Chairs Michelle and Mark Nagle and Allyson and Mike Schumacher, and the Opening Party Chairs Christine and David Dauenhauer and Julie and Gary Shipley. More than 1,500 X-Travaganza supporters —many continuing to support X-Trav for years after their son graduates— contribute to make every activity a fun, community-building event. These volunteers, committee chairs, donors, sponsors, auction bidders, event attendees and other supporters make the true magic happen. Through their efforts, proceeds from X-Travaganza’s year-round series of events, auctions and raffles benefit all of the young men at St. Xavier.
Brother to Brother The St. Xavier High School Brother to Brother Speaker Series was honored to host Daniel Braswell ’10, University of Cincinnati Physical Therapy doctoral student. Braswell was equally honored to speak with current St. X students about life post St. X and what’s ahead. He emphasized hard work continues after St. X and the importance of building strong relationships with your teachers and mentors throughout college. #LongBlueLine

Michael Benson Concert St. Xavier High School’s Michael Benson Concert-goers were treated to an incredible afternoon of jazz that made your head bob, your feet sway and your fingers tap to the cool jazz sounds beautifully performed at the 19th Annual Michael Benson Concert featuring renowned trumpeter, Dominick Farinacci, the Phil DeGreg Trio and the St. Xavier Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Jody Besse. Jazz enthusiasts were swept away to the sounds of “A Night in Tunisia,” “Sidewinder,” “Blue Rondo Ala Turk,” “Emancipation Blues,” “Stairway to Heaven” and so much more.
This annual jazz tribute honors the memory of Michael Benson ’99 and his love of jazz music. A special thank you to Bob and Rosalyn Benson for their continued support of the jazz program at St. Xavier.

Mustache March Finalists Students were permitted to grow facial hair for the month of March, to raise $825 for the Karen Wellington Foundation. The Karen Wellington foundation helps women suffering from breast cancer. The winners included Chase Wolf: Not a Good Look For You, Danny Spetz: Best in Show and Jake Hoffman: Most Growth.
Blessing of the New Tennis Courts The new tennis court complex was blessed on Saturday, June 2. Fr. Tim Howe SJ performed a brief ceremony and head varsity tennis coach Russ King spoke to the attendees. Current students and alumni from as far back as 1958 attended the event. The St. X tennis complex now includes 17 courts, making it one of the largest tennis complexes in the region.

Words From The Principal Terrence Tyrrell
On September 20, 2017, Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico and the lights went out for six months. As thousands of Puerto Ricans left the island in search of new opportunity in the United States, Fr. Tim Howe bought his one-way ticket to San Juan. Following St. Ignatius’ invitation to serve where you are called and epitomizing the Jesuit slogan of a “Man for Others,” Fr. Howe is leaving the comforts of his first language and newly minted honorary alma mater, St. Xavier, in order to serve the people of San Juan at the Jesuit high school Colegio San Ignacio de Loyola. During his nine years at St. X, Fr. Howe epitomized servant leadership as he transformed St. X. During Fr. Howe’s tenure, St. X increased enrollment, more than doubled the endowment, and saw test scores jump to record highs. More than this, Fr. Howe led the Strategic Plan initiative that, upon completion this spring, has positioned St. X well moving into the future, including increasing the multicultural student population from 11% to 18% and raising just under $100 million for financial aid resources for our neediest students. Like Fr. Howe, the Class of 2018 is leaving the comforts of St. X to serve in new communities. The 391 graduates will attend 82 different universities with majors ranging from Business and Father Tim Howe SJ and Terry Tyrrell
Engineering to Fine Arts and Computer Science. They will be called upon to serve and find their vocational calling. Also like Fr. Howe, the Class of 2018 leaves an impressive legacy behind, including: • The highest ACT average in the history of the school at 29.2; including five students receiving perfect scores on the ACT. • 328 seniors receiving academic or athletic scholarships totaling more than $59,000,000.00. • More than 85% of the class performed thousands of hours of service, working with dozens of agencies and hundreds of children and adults in need. • More than 85% of the class voluntarily chose to attend a retreat during their senior year, including Kairos. • Eleven State Championships over four years, including four in swimming and diving, two in golf, lacrosse, and water polo, and one in football. • The development of nationally and state-recognized Fine Arts programming.
As Fr. Howe and the Class of 2018 leave us, they will be replaced with men of impressive credentials in their own right: Mr. Tim Reilly ’76 and the Class of 2022. The incoming freshmen represent the most diverse class in the history of St. Xavier, with the 384 members coming from more than 100 different grade schools and over 21% of the class coming from multicultural backgrounds. Mr. Reilly has helped to build the largest Catholic grade school in the United States, creating an innovative learning environment that educates students of all abilities in the Catholic faith. Both will do great things here. The future is bright at St. Xavier, thanks to both the contributions of those who are leaving and the promise of those who are joining us. We will continue to be the “best at getting better” as we serve our students. Summer 2018

Year in Review
The 2017-2018 school year was another successful year for the St. Xavier Athletic Department. The Bombers claimed the All Sports Trophy for the 7th consecutive year with a total of 73 points which was ahead of Moeller’s 69 points. St. Xavier is now tied with St. Edwards with 56 team OHSAA Div. I State Titles which is tied for most all time in the State of Ohio. See a recap for each sport below.

FOOTBALL
The Bombers ran well at several meets during the regular season which included wins in the Moeller Primetime Invitational and the Tiffin Cross Country Invitational. They placed 2nd at two national meets in Louisville at the Trinity Invitational and in Rochester, NY at the McQuaid Invitational. St. Xavier won the GCL Championship for the 7th straight year and all seven Bombers’ starters were voted All-GCL First Team or Second Team. Senior Peter Dauenhauer won GCL Runner of the Year and head coach, Andy Wietmarschen, was named GCL Coach of the year. The Bombers then won the OHSAA Div. I District Championship and finished 3rd in the Regional Championship to qualify for the State Championship. They finished 5th at the OHSAA Div. I State Championship led by Dauenhauer who finished in 12th place overall.
The defending State Champions started the 2017 season with high expectations. The Bombers lived up to those expectations as they finished the regular season with a 9-1 record. St. Xavier won their first eight games to start the year with victories over Hinsdale Central (43-14), Colerain (20-17), Walnut Hills (50-7), Cathedral (31-7), Moeller (30-7), Elder (14-6), LaSalle (42-7) and Football North (47-14). With the three wins over GCL South rivals, St. Xavier claimed the GCL South title outright for the first time since 2012. It was their 3rd title in four years. The Bombers closed out the regular season with a victory at Louisville St. Xavier (16-14) to seal the top seed in the OHSAA Div. I Region 4 playoffs and hosted Fairfield HS in the first round. The Bombers won easily 40-12 and then defeated Sycamore in the second round by a score of 37-7. They ended up finishing the season at 11-2 and were the regional runner-up. Senior QB Chase Wolf (Wisconsin commit) was named 2017 SW District Offensive Player of the Year and earned 1st team offense SW District. Junior WR/P Jared Kreimer won Punter of the Year for the SW District. Senior WR Cameron Specht was named to the 1st team offense SW District. Senior DL Bobby Jefferson (Dartmouth commit) and junior LB Thomas Kiessling were both named 1st team defense SW District. Senior Blake Bacevich (Cincinnati commit) was named 2nd team defense SW District.
GOLF It was a memorable regular season for the 2017 Golf team as they enjoyed seven invitational wins and finished with a 37-5 record in 9-hole matches. The Bombers won the GCL South Title for the 3rd straight season led by junior Oscar Zimmerman who was named GCL Athlete of the Year. They set the record for lowest 72-hole score for the GCL Championship with a total of 1,160 strokes breaking the previous record by 22 shots. They placed four student athletes on All GCL 1st team and one student athlete on All GCL 2nd team. Zimmerman and senior Cameron Frazier (Wisconsin commit) each had hole-in-ones during the season while Zimmerman recorded a double eagle the day after his hole-in-one. St. Xavier entered the post season as defending back to back OHSAA Div. I State Champions and started the defense of their titles with a win at the Sectional Tournament by seven shots. They also won the District Tournament with a total of 292 to win by nine shots. At the State Tournament, the Bombers turned in their highest score of the season on day 1 but bounced back on day 2 to finish in 4th place overall. Frazier shot a two-day total of 151 to earn 2nd Team All-State honors.

BASKETBALL The Varsity Basketball Bombers finished the season with a 17-8 overall record, the most wins since the 2007-2008 season. St. Xavier also won two GCL South games with victories over Elder and LaSalle. The victory over Elder in the Berning Gymnasium was the first GCL South win since the 2012-2013 season. Senior Andrew Wittrock sealed the 55-53 win with a layup just before the buzzer which created a floor storming celebration from the student sections. The Bombers advanced to the District Semi-Finals with wins over Loveland and Wilmington in the OHSAA Div. I Tournament.
The 2017 season saw the Bombers finish with an 11-5-4 overall record and a 3-2-1 record in the GCL South for a 2nd place finish. St. Xavier hosted the 2017 Jesuit Tournament where they knocked off the #1 team in the country, St. Ignatius on day one to advance to the finals. In the finals, they beat Toledo St. John’s in a shootout to claim the school’s first ever Jesuit Cup in soccer. The Bombers found their stride late in the season when they won seven straight matches to advance to the OHSAA Div. I Regional SemiFinals. Senior Will Watkins was named a GCL All Academic award winner and four other Bombers were named to the All GCL 1st Team.
WATER POLO The 2017 season marked the program’s 7th season back as a Varsity sport at St. Xavier. The Bombers enjoyed a record of 25-9-1 during the regular season which was highlighted by a trip to San Diego where they faced nationally ranked teams and finished with a 3-3 record on the trip. The program now consists of 59 student athletes between the three levels and together they hosted a 27-team tournament in September at Coney Island’s Sunlite Pool with teams from Ohio, Michigan, Tennessee and Illinois. All seven of the Varsity starters were named to All Ohio 1st team, 2nd team or honorable mention, a first for any school in the state of Ohio. After winning back-to-back State Titles in 2015 and 2016, the Bombers took home 3rd place in the State Tournament in 2017. BOWLING The Varsity Bowling team finished the season with a 13-13 overall record but the season was a bigger success than their record. All five starters were named to the GCL 1st team or 2nd team as numerous records fell during the season. The program record of total pins in individual games was broken with a total of 1,188 pins vs. Butler. The program records for total pins in Sectional play was broken with 4,475 pins and in District play was broken with 4,278 pins. The Bombers missed the State Tournament by 28 pins and finished 6th at the OHSAA Div. I District Tournament, which is the highest finish since 2011-2012. Senior Zach Littelmann tied the school record with a single game of 290 at the Sectional Tournament.

BASEBALL
VOLLEYBALL
The Varsity Hockey team finished the season with a 19-8-4 overall record. St. Xavier defeated Moeller on GCL Night at US Bank Arena by a score of 4-1 and took home 4th place at the Toledo St. John’s Mark Rasmus Invitational. They won the Southwest Ohio High School Hockey League Tournament for the 2nd straight season with a 7-1 win over Elder in the finals after dropping their previous two games to them in the regular season. The Bombers advanced to the OHSAA Div. I Sectional Finals after wins over Troy and Bishop Watterson in the first two rounds. A total of 12 Bombers were named to the Cincinnati.com All City Team and sophomore Noah Reidy was named Greater Cincinnati Hockey Player of the Year at the Cincinnati.com Awards Show.
The Bombers finished with a 17-10 overall record and 6-3 in the GCL South. They finished 2nd in the GCL South and beat Moeller two out of three to win the season series from the Crusaders for the first time since the 2011 season. There were seven Bombers on either the All GCL 1st Team or All GCL 2nd Team. They advanced to the OHSAA Div. I District Finals after winning their first two playoff games over Sycamore and Badin. Senior Nathan Kappers broke the school record for career wins for a pitcher as he totaled 19 over his four-year career. He was named to the 1st team by the Southwest Ohio Baseball Coaches Association while teammates Tyler Dellerman ’18 was named 2nd team and Michael Grause ’18, Tucker Hundley ’20 and Grant Kirby ’18 were named Honorable Mention.
The Volleyball Bombers finished the season with a 20-4 overall record and advanced to the OHSBVA Div. I State Tournament. St. Xavier hosted the Regional Finals and beat Elder in a thrilling five game match to advance to the State Tournament. St. Xavier finished second in the GCL South with a 4-2 record and placed four members on the All GCL 1st team and 2nd team. Head Coach Bill Ferris was named GCL South Coach of the Year. Seniors Henry Huber and Kevin McCarthy were both named All Region All Stars and All State All Stars. Senior Ryan Hilvert and juniors Leo Kastner and Brian Mauch were all named to the All-Region All Star team.
SWIMMING
WRESTLING
The 2016-2017 team was named the NISCA National Champions and the Swimming World National Champions last summer. This year’s team lived up to those expectations with another great year. They claimed their 72nd overall GCL Title where sophomore RJ Myers won Swimmer of the Meet and Tim Beerman won GCL Coach of the year. 20 Bombers were named to either All GCL 1st Team or All GCL 2nd team. St. Xavier won both the OHSAA Div. I Sectional (49th straight) and District (50th straight) Titles. They captured the program’s 39th overall OHSAA Div. I State Championship and 10th straight. Senior Justin Grender broke a State Record and School Record in the 100 backstroke that was set by Jayme Cramer in 2001. He ended his career with eight wins at the State Championship Meet over four years. Senior Nicholas Perera also ended his career with eight wins at the State Championship after winning two events this year. He won the Greater Cincinnati Swimmer of the Year award at the Cincinnati.com Awards show.
The Bombers had a very young squad with multiple first year wrestlers on Varsity. Senior Jack Heyob finished the season with a 44-2 record as the heavyweight and qualified for the OHSAA Div. I State Championship. He advanced all the way to finals and finished 2nd in the State of Ohio. He will attend Northwestern University next year to continue his academic and wrestling careers.
RUGBY The Bombers had a good season that included wins over Moeller, Walnut Hills and the Lakota Jets. They traveled to Washington DC this year and played in the Gonzaga Prep Rugby Classic where some of the top teams in the country participated. The JV team finished 2nd in the JV division. They celebrated senior night with a field dedication on the grass field across from St. X where permanent bleachers, a press box and scoreboard have been installed.
TRACK AND FIELD The St. Xavier Track and Field team had one of the most successful seasons in recent memory. The Bombers opened the season with a win at the Elder Skyline Open and placed 2nd at both the Harrison Invitational and Colerain Invitational. They finished 2nd in the GCL South Championship Meet just two points behind the champion. They placed seven members on the 1st Team All GCL Team and five members on 2nd Team All GCL. Senior Peter Dauenhauer qualified for the OHSAA Div. I State Championship Meet in the 3200 M run and as a member of the 4x800 M relay team which also consisted of junior Matthew Hoak, junior Nick Mills and sophomore Tommy Walters. Senior Sean Mesue qualified for the State Meet in the Discus Throw and junior Henry Young qualified in the 100 M Dash and 200 M Dash. The 4x200 relay team of senior TJ Ahrens, senior King Hudson, Young and junior BJ Ferguson ran a time to qualify for the National Meet in June.
TENNIS The Bombers’ Tennis team won their 51st consecutive GCL South Title as they finished the season with a 19-2 overall record and 5-1 in the GCL South. St. Xavier advanced to the OTCA Team Tournament Regional Finals and finished the season as the #3 ranked team in the State of Ohio according to Ohio Tennis Zone. The Bombers’ doubles team of senior Joe Beischel and junior Nick Aronoff advanced to the OHSAA Div. I District tournament while the doubles team of junior Max DeCurtins and freshman Charlie Temming advanced to the OHSAA Div. I State Championship Tournament. DeCurtins and Temming won the OHSAA Div. I Sectional and District Tournaments.
LACROSSE The Varsity Lacrosse Bombers finished the season with a 19-3 overall record and won the 2018 OHSAA Division I State Championship. They defeated Anderson (23-1), Lebanon (19-2), Loveland (17-6), Moeller (17-5), Worthington Kilbourne (18-8) and St. Ignatius (10-9) in the State Tournament to capture the title. St. Xavier finished ranked #1 in the Laxpower.com RPI ratings for the State of Ohio after playing one of the toughest schedules in the country. They won the
2018 Midwest Scholastic Lacrosse Coaches Association tournament as well for the first time in program history. Senior Johnny Marrocco was named All Region Player of the Year and won Co-Player of the Year for the State of Ohio. The Bombers had seven members make the All Region teams and five members on the All State teams. Head Coach Nate Sprong won Region and State Coach of the Year awards while Asst. Coach Gary Buczek won Region and State Asst. Coach of the Year awards.

BANDS
THEATRE XAVIER (TX)
The Marching Bombers continued their tradition of wonderful pregame and halftime performances. The halftime show featured the exhilarating and energetic music from Bruno Mars. The band proudly supported the football team through an exciting season enduring some of the coldest game nights on record.
Theatre Xavier celebrated another exciting year.
The St. Xavier Drum Line had another great year with featured performances for several events and continued their community service with guest performances for the Buddy Walk for Down Syndrome, the Butterfly Walk for Cancer Free Kids, and the Disabled Veterans 5K Run. They continue to be a big X-Travaganza auction item for a performance at a private party dinner event. The Jazz Ensemble A performed for Open House, the Christmas Concert, the President’s Dinner, the Michael Benson Concert with featured trumpet player Dominick Farinacci, and the end of the year combined bands concert. Alto saxophonist Will Fagel ’19, trombonist Nathaniel Sena ’19, and trumpeter Zac Robinson ’19 were selected to represent St. X at the annual Jamey Aebersold Jazz Workshop in July. Nathaniel Sena was also selected to the District XIV Concert Honor Band in January. The Percussion Ensemble had a wonderful semester with performances at the Spring Choral Concert and the end of the year Band Concert. They received many accolades for their rendition of “All About Dat Trash” which was a unique performance involving trash cans. The concert band had a wonderful performance for the end of the year band concert and received much praise for their overall sound and particularly their rendition of their performance of “The Highlights from Jersey Boys.”

In the fall, they performed the company’s first Shakespeare production in several decades - A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The show was selected to attend the Regional International Thespian Festival where they rocked the house and wowed audiences from other schools with high caliber performing arts programs. Congratulations to them! In the Spring TX performed Enron by Lucy Prebble. This show was made special by adding three songs written by students! Audiences were amazed as they were told a contemporary story of corporate greed
through song, dance, velociraptors and lightsabers. This was most certainly a production to remember. This summer TX is preparing an originally devised play titled Parents, to be taken to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August. Students will create and rehearse the play at St. X but perform it in Scotland at the world’s largest performing arts festival. This show marks the inaugural production of X-Box, a place where St. X students can work on experimental theatre. Good luck to our students as they represent St. X across the ocean!
STRINGS The Men in Black, the St. Xavier High School string ensemble, enjoyed another year of music-making at St. X and in the community. During the Fall String Recital in October the Men in Black welcomed the string players from the class of 2021 onto the stage for the first time at St. X. In December, the Men in Black joined the St. X Jazz Band and choirs for the annual Christmas Concerts. After the Christmas break, musicians from St. X met at Elder High School for the Ohio Music Educators Association Solo and Ensemble Adjudicated Event. Of the 14 students from St. X who played for ratings, seven received a rating of 1 (the highest possible score), six received a rating of 2, and one student received a rating of 3 (out of 5). One student presented for comments only and received very positive remarks from the adjudicator. These performances were a mixture of violin, viola, cello, bass, guitar, piano, and voice.
Each year string players at St. X participate in liturgical music for the all-school Masses. This year the number of string players consistently rehearsing with the other liturgical musicians has increased and their sound has become an expected presence in the masses. The fall concert during the first week of May featured music for guitars as well as string orchestra. One of the most memorable performances was music from “Star Wars: the Force Awakens” by John Williams. The Men in Black Class of 2018 were recognized for their contribution to the string program especially Brooks Neiberding ’18 for serving as concert master since his freshman year. In addition to these performances, the Men in Black also provided music during Open House, the Mothers’ Club Boutique and the President’s Dinner.
CHORAL PROGRAM The St. Xavier choral program celebrates another fantastic year of music-making in and around the St. X community. In total, more than 130 students participated in the choral ensembles this year through both X-Men and Ensemble X. Both ensembles sang beautifully in their fall and spring choral concerts, and enjoyed joining forces with the other St. X music ensembles at our annual Christmas concerts. Both groups also sang as part of the city’s annual Men’s Chorus Festival. This performance, which took place at St. Monica-St. George in Clifton, featured upwards of 200 singers from St. X, the Cincinnati Boychoir, the University of Cincinnati, and guests from Loyola Blakefield in Baltimore, MD. Ensemble X also represented the St. X community at several performances and special events throughout the school year, singing at three school Masses, as guest performers at Musica Sacra’s fall concert, at the Catholic Charities of Southwest Ohio Champions of Mercy dinner, at the ensemble’s annual Christmas Dinner celebration,
at the Mother’s Club Christmas luncheon, at Academic Awards Night, at an X-Travaganza auction winner’s event, at a brunch in honor of Fr. Howe, and at a St. X 50th Reunion celebration. The group also sang the National Anthem at a St. X home football game and at St. X’s Night at a Reds game.
And finally, a huge thank you to Dan Dery, Latin teacher and pianist extraordinaire, who offers so much of his time and talent to the choral ensembles throughout the year.

COMMUNITY SERVICE Junior Big Brothers Program had over 100 Big Brothers paired with 100 Little Brothers.
Special Olympics Program had 60 students participating.
The Big Buddies program had almost 200 students participating.
St. Joseph Home Program had 60 students participating.
Community Service classes had about 200 students enrolled. Once each week these students leave school as part of class to volunteer at various service sites.
Important note: each of these programs includes some sort of reflective meeting component for students.
The Big Buddies/Big Brothers Car Wash took place in mid-September at sites around Greater Cincinnati. After School CAP had 178 students participating. Saturday Morning Service Program had about 375 students participating. Over 150 parent chaperones helped out at service activities over the course of the school year.
The Canned Food Drive collected about 163,000 pounds of food:
• We delivered food directly to 600 families in need • We delivered food to two Appalachian communities
• About 30 different social service agencies came to St. X to get food for their food pantries We offered 11 Mission Trips for about 110 students. There is also a Mission Trip reflection program for students and chaperones.

2018 President’s Dinner St. Xavier High School benefactors and supporters gathered for the annual President’s Dinner on Tuesday, May 1. Fr. Tim Howe SJ thanked guests and led the evening of honors and awards. As guests arrived they were greeted by the melodic tones of the St. Xavier Jazz Band. Fr. Terry Baum SJ began the dinner with a prayer and guests enjoyed dinner music provided by the Strings Ensemble. The choral group Ensemble X performed the National Anthem and then delighted guests with the musical performance of the song “Witness.” St. X Board Chair Ann Berger addressed guests giving them a brief update on the school and thanked all those in attendance for their dedication to the students of St. Xavier High School. She then thanked Fr. Tim Howe for his nine years of service and

presented him with a document naming him as an honorary alumnus and the newest member of the Long Blue Line. Faculty member Gregory L. Lamping ’80 was recognized for his 25 years of dedicated service to the St. Xavier community. St. Xavier High School board members John C. Bloomstrom, Cynthia A. Fazio, John B. Schmitz ’78, Brett R. Smith ’87 and Richard E. Thornburgh ’70 were honored and thanked for their service. The evening ended with two very special award presentations. William P. Butler ’60 and Richard E. Thornburgh ’70 both received the 2018 Insignis Award. The evening concluded with a note of thanks from Fr. Howe to all in attendance for their support not only financially, but through prayer and volunteer service as well.

On May 31, the Class of 2018 was welcomed into the Long Blue Line of St. Xavier alumni. The 391 young men ceremoniously followed the members of the Class of 1968 into the Cintas Center for the graduation ceremony upholding the tradition of the 50-year anniversary class leading the procession. Principal Terry Tyrrell welcomed the graduates, alumni, parents and family members supporting the members of the class on this special occasion. He encouraged the graduates to continue to live the Jesuit motto of Ad Maijorem Dei Gloriam, All for the Greater Glory of God. Garrett S. Madden ’18 spoke on behalf of the senior class reminding them that St. X holds up a mirror for students to truly examine who they are and to use that for the rest of their lives. Current president Fr. Timothy A. Howe SJ became an official member of the Class of 2018 as he moves on to serve as president in Puerto Rico at Colegio San Ignacio. He spoke to the class about living the Graduate at Graduation concepts and how being Open to Growth truly ties them all together.

Faculty Focus Dave Eby Although Dave Eby is a 1976 Elder grad, he has truly become a St. Xavier Bomber. He began his teaching career at St. X in 1988 and since then he has been involved with almost every aspect of the community including leading our community each week through the Examen. In the classroom his favorite course to teach is Scriptures and he has also taught Faith and Sacraments, Morality and Justice, Senior Theology, Philosophical/ Theological Themes in Film, Servant Leadership for 21st Century, Discovering the Artist Within, Relationships and Meditation. He has served St. Xavier in the Religion Department for 30 years, Community Service for three years and Campus Ministry for seven years. During his time he has worked with student leadership and with student orientations. He has coached track, soccer, volleyball and cross country during his tenure and is commonly referred to as the “Voice of the Bombers” because of his work as the public address announcer. Dave has been on Mission Trips to Monticello, KY; Vanceburg, KY; Texas/Mexico Border and started the Ivanhoe, VA trip. He has served St. Xavier through the faculty association as well as on the strategic plan and Jesuit Identity committees and aided on several search committees as well.
What has changed or stayed the same over the many years you have been at St. X? Since the day I started the commitment to excellence in all that we do; “Finding God in All Things” is continuously emphasized. We are each encouraged to use our unique gifts and talents to build a more just and equal society. It is a community focused on “cura personalis” care and concern for each individual. The idea that our athletics, concerts, plays, art exhibitions

and other extra-curriculars are classrooms without walls offering each student the opportunity to learn through their own personal gifts. One of the biggest things I have watched stay the same over 30 years is our constant engagement with the Cincinnati community through service. It makes me very proud. What has changed is an interesting concept when you consider I have been at St. Xavier 30 years. The sequential, intentional development of our Student Leadership program is exciting. When I first arrived we had a handful of named, recognized leadership positions. We literally now have hundreds. The students have embraced the concept we borrowed from AYF leadership camp of “My own self at my very best, all the time.” We have stressed four key ideas. 1. We’re all leaders and we’re leading all the time, well or poorly. 2. Leadership springs from within. It’s about who I am as much as what I do. 3. Leadership is my life in that it is a way of living. 4. The task of becoming a leader is never complete. It is an ongoing process. Chris Lowney talked about these in his book Heroic Leadership. The fact that we turn so many things over to the students to lead such as homeroom, the CFD, the mission collection, the phonathon, the orientations, and some of our retreats speaks highly of how invested the guys are in leadership.
What is the most rewarding thing about being part of the St. Xavier community? The most rewarding part of being a faculty member at St. X is seeing our students blossom into Men for Others. Another highlight is watching our graduates’ beaming faces when their sons gain acceptance to St. Xavier. As a teacher it makes me very proud when I read about the accomplishments of our graduates in the arts, business, cultural, medical, and educational fields. On a very personal level I am thrilled that I have been able to coach during the five state championships in cross country. It has been a joy to have the freedom to develop new curriculum pieces for the religion department, new retreats for the students through campus ministry, and the more intentional servant leadership program. All of the wonderful things here make me extremely proud that I can say my son is a member of the Long Blue Line.
What is so special about St. Xavier? Many things make this institution special. It is the constant desire to strive for the “Magis” – the more, excellence is a consistent expectation all across the building. Thus, pressure is a privilege. We see this in our academics and our athletics. Our students learn how to perform in clutch situations. It is a life-long skill developed daily at St. X. As a whole, there is a commitment to meeting the students where they are and helping them thrive as they move forward. The spiritual idea that we “go in through their doors” yet they come out “through our doors” as more faithfilled men ready to stay faithful to the struggle in their spiritual journeys is very impactful. The student inculcation of the Prayer of Generosity is seen in their service, their support of the mission collection, and how they give back to the Annual Fund and scholarships for those who need them.
How would you describe the St. Xavier Advantage? The “ESPN” of St. Xavier is the Economics, Spiritual/Social, Political, Network of St. Xavier. It is unrivaled in the city of Cincinnati. It is not just local as the national and international network of Jesuit —schools, parishes, and colleges/universities—open up a world of opportunity for our graduates. As we sing in the Alma Mater, “Years in passing cannot sever ties of old days from the new, we are Xavier men forever…”
X-tra Notes What a treat to use my voice in promoting new courses and retreats to spiritually help our students “Find God in all things.” I absolutely enjoy being the “Voice of the Bombers” on fall and spring nights in St. Xavier Stadium and winter evenings in the Berning gymnasium. The energy, excitement, and spirit of St. Xavier sports is invigorating. What a privilege it is to be a teacher at St. Xavier for 30 years. What a joy to be a part of these young men’s stories while challenging them to use their gifts. The sharing of their stories and gifts has made my life richer, fuller, and more meaningful. I look forward to my remaining years of teaching here with great hope, faith, and confidence that the spirit of St. Francis Xavier will continue to echo in these hallowed halls.
Career ConneXions
Career ConneXions ends its first year with many successes! The winter edition told you about the launch of the St. Xavier Career ConneXions program, focused on tying students to adults for guidance in planning their careers. Now that the school year ended and summer begins, let’s look at the great progress that’s been achieved.
Speakers — Over three days during Career ConneXions Week, recent graduates spoke about leadership, their jobs and professional life. On the third day, a panel of seniors told younger Bombers about the college application and admission process. More than 80 students attended each session. Senior Erich Guenther created a video of the week. “The pizza helped, but the speaker had an interesting presentation that was applicable to my own life,” a sophomore said of alum Bryan Jones ‘87. “It was definitely worth going to.”
Mentorship —Students have shown a strong demand for mentors, and many graduates, parents and friends have volunteered. At least 40 pairs of mentors and students so far have met. A survey showed 85% of participants say their match is working; 80% say the program has done well matching the mentor’s industry and knowledge with the student’s area of interest. “I think the mentoring program has provided me with a role model to whom I can go for any sort of advice,” said Cameron Frueh, “whether it be future careers, future colleges, or schoolwork. “I’ve been able to get years of experience and insight into how business operates…before even graduating high school.
Job shadowing —At least 15 students have spent a school free day shadowing someone in fields ranging from non-profits to construction. At least 30 job-shadow hosts offered more than 100 such opportunities this spring. “Overall, I greatly enjoyed it,” one student said of his shadowing. Others appreciated the hands-on, eye-opening opportunity they were given. Internships — By early April, about 15 positions, paid and unpaid, were available to students in areas ranging from start-ups to construction; from elections to website development. Twenty-one students applied for six of these positions alone, requiring a screening process to whittle the applicants to a manageable number. Since these positions are geared mostly toward the summer, there are no results to report, but initial interest is high, and more internship opportunities are coming forward. Partnerships with start-ups and business incubators are being pursued. In addition to these four components, Career ConneXions presents a series of monthly speakers. And the education component of the program counsels students in such areas as writing resumes and cover letters, networking, and professional demeanor. Program director Christine Dauenhauer said feedback is very positive and also shows that some tweaks are needed. Roles of participants and aims of the program are being refined. But clearly, Career ConneXions is off to a rousing start. The program extends a big THANK YOU! to all of the parents and alumni volunteers for making these opportunities possible.
Class of ’68 helps Career ConneXions In planning its gift to St. Xavier, the Class of 1968 reunion committee noodled several possibilities. It decided on an endowed scholarship. And the novel idea of a mentoring program to guide students on their career pursuits. Simultaneously, the high school was launching Career ConneXions that included not only mentoring but also several other components to inform and guide young men for their chosen life pursuits. So the two were blended. Over the last few months, several members of the Class of ’68 have joined the Career ConneXions Steering Committee. Others have volunteered as mentors. Early on, it was feared that the older Bombers might be out of touch with the interests of students some five decades younger. But they’re finding that lessons and experiences of a lifetime of work only get better with age.

Student Spotlight Jack Dirksing ’18 Jack Dirksing ’18 embraced everything St. Xavier offered during his high school career. What are your plans for the future? I plan on majoring in International Relations and Arabic at The United States Military Academy. At West Point I plan on trying out for the Combat Weapons Team or Small Tactic Units Teams. After West Point, my goal in the military is to strive to reach the top tier special forces level (CAG).
Why did you decide to attend St. Xavier High School? Even though I have no other relatives that attended St. X. I know becoming a Bomber marked an opportunity for me to compete with the best in my area both academically and athletically. Through healthy competition with my peers, I knew I would become a better student and leader within the community. Also, St. Xavier provides students a chance to get heavily involved in various extracurriculars while at the same time transforming young adults into educated and productive members of society.
Talk about your experiences in the classroom and on the playing field. Through classwork and athletics, I have learned the importance of collaboration and servant leadership. It is important for students to interact with one another in an attempt for mutual academic

excellence. In our future careers, the skill of healthy collaboration will be a key to success. Those who constantly choose a path of individualism will miss out on opportunities for growth. On the field, servant leadership correlates to a successful team culture. It is important that those tied to a leadership position within a team go above and beyond to live up to the expectations set for their fellow teammates.
What words of wisdom do you have for future members of the Long Blue Line? Even if you are hesitant to get involved in a certain extra-curricular at St. Xavier, sign up anyway and go in with an open mind. You never know the opportunities that can result from new experiences.
Describe what the St. Xavier Advantage means to you. The St. Xavier advantage is all about giving students the tools necessary to carry out positive change within their communities. It shows us that as educated leaders we can make an important impact on society. Furthermore, the advantage doesn’t end with St. Xavier just teaching us these valuable skills, they also work to guide us on how to effectively use these skills for the better.

’66 David Quammen returned to St. Xavier for the Ignatian Summit at St. Xavier: Our Planet, Our Home, Our Responsibility in February 2018 where he was Keynote Speaker. David is a renowned author for National Geographic.

Kanet, received the Marquis Who’s Who, Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in February 2018. ’54 Tom Penderghast lives in the greater Los Angeles area and plays guitar and banjo for the band Forever Young. Members of the band are all in their 80’s or 90’s. Tom is one of the younger members of the group and says, “At this age, it is nice to be considered one of the youngest of any group!”
’66 Dick Felger retired January 1 after selling his hospital supply chain software company which he started with three guys in a garage. Sold the company with over 70 employees and serving over 400 hospitals nationwide. ’66 Mike “Harby” Harbison will be inducted into the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s Officials Hall of Fame in June, 2018.
’67 Steve Leverone and wife Mimi will celebrate 44 years of marriage on July 5th. Steve, Vice President of Sales, will celebrate 42 years of employment with Schulhoff Tool Rental this fall.
Wilcox (B&W) was recently named the company’s 39th recipient of its Engineering Honors Award. Ron has served B&W for over 40 years beginning in 1973 as a summer student employee while attending Purdue University where he earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in mechanical engineering. Ron is a registered professional engineer in the state of Ohio, and serves as a primary support author for B&W’s STEAM/its generation and use, the world’s longest continually published and most relied-upon engineering text of its kind.
’70 John Gallagher is a physician for Mercy Health and was recently published in the March 2017 edition of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery following extensive research about using insulin after total joint replacement to prevent infection.

’56 James Schwartz is enjoying retirement. Having earned multiple degrees from Miami University and the University of Wisconsin, he taught journalism at the University of WisconsinEau Claire. He also graduated from Western Washington University’s Army Language School where he learned Russian and spent six years as Army Security for the United States Army. He thoroughly enjoyed being a reporter for the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Minneapolis Tribune and the Louisville Courier-Journal. James and his wife raised three wonderful daughters.

In March of this year, a piece of steel which had been in place for well over one hundred years cracked when a car crashed into it. According to Ed, “All repairs went very smoothly and the bridge was reopened to traffic four days earlier than expected!”

’88 Chris Mack, former Xavier University Head Coach was named the 2018 Big East Conference Coach of the Year. At the conclusion of the 20172018 season, Mack was named Head Coach, University of Louisville Men’s Basketball, ending the Mac Era at Xavier University as the winningest coach in Xavier’s men’s basketball history.
90’s ’93 Ryan Boggs leads FourStar Life Insurance Services LLC for FourStar Wealth Advisors, LLC, a Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) in Chicago, IL. FourStar offers a variety of services including employee benefits, retirement planning and wealth management. Ryan also volunteers his time as a FAFSA instructor, working with parents and students educating them on the many complexities of college planning.
’95 Joey Kern wrote, directed, starred and coproduced the movie, Big Bear, released in winter of 2017-18. Joey and his wife, Gillian, welcomed their second daughter, Rosie Irene, in January 2018.
Members of the St. X Class of 1987 created an endowed scholarship fund last year at their 30th reunion. The first recipient of the scholarship is current St. Xavier student, Reece Niederhausen ’21. The scholarship has raised over $250,000 in pledges and is a testament to the Long Blue Line and will provide educational opportunities for deserving young men for years to come.

Additionally, Rick has been an active part of International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) since its inception in 2007. ICAN was awarded the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize. Wayman was part of ICAN’s diverse team of campaigners that worked to achieve the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons at the United Nations. Rick is the Director of Programs & Operations, Nuclear Age Peace Foundation.

Jeff is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame where he earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He works for MTH Industries as a project manager.

Jack works for the American Enterprise Institute in Washington DC. ’11 Michael Markesbery is CEO and CoFounder of Oros Apparel, a performance apparel company that uses NASA spacesuit insulation, Aerogel, to provide outerwear warmth without bulk. Michael was awarded the “18 of 9” Award from Miami University honoring the top 18 graduates from the last nine years. Over 150 graduates were nominated for this prestigious award. ’12 Adam Price returned to St. X and spoke with Biology Class students about careers in medicine. Adam is in his second year of medical school at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine focusing on general surgery. ’14 Bo Plogmann graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He will be attending Lehigh University for a Master of Design in Civil Engineering.

News from the Long Blue Line
’15 Andrew “Scottie” Emmert, a junior at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine was recently named a 2018 Goldwater Scholar, one of 211 students in the country. He’s part of a research team at Cincinnati Children’s studying the build-up of cerebral spinal fluid in the brain. Working under the direction of Francesco Mangano, DO, chief of the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Children’s and professor of pediatrics at UC and June Goto, PhD, Children’s researcher and instructor in the UC Department of Neurosurgery. Emmert has worked in the Mangano Lab since his freshman year as part of the University Honors Program Biomedical Research and Mentoring Program (RaMP) and Cincinnati Children’s Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship. He’s coauthored four scholarly abstracts published on hydrocephalus and hopes to enter a MD/PhD neuroscience program after graduation to continue developing new applications of gene therapy and neuroimaging to treat hydrocephalus.
’16 Alvin Chaney, a sophomore at Ohio University was selected as one of twenty-one students to serve in the Presidential Leadership Society, an elite society of student volunteers who are chosen to advance the priorities and initiatives of University President Nellis. Chaney has been asked to serve two terms with President Nellis. Additionally, Chaney serves as a student liaison for the Student Accessibility Office which works with the Athens City Council to help create a more accessible and inclusive campus. Chaney is majoring in Industrial and Systems Engineering and was selected to serve a two-year commitment as Ambassador to the Russ College of Engineering representing the program to future students, alumni and industry partners.

X-Peditions 1. Dennis Lampe ’65 and his wife Ann have now traveled all seven continents, the most recent in Antarctica, February 2018. 2. Bomber pride brought current competitors and former cross country teammates Jax Talbot ’14 and Brad Eagan ’15 together again. They competed against each other last October at a meet in Illinois. Talbot runs for the University of Toledo and Eagan runs for Marquette University. 3. Hitting the slopes at Snowbird, Utah over President’s Day weekend February 2018 are St. X grads Matt Meyer ’16, Paul Meyer ’13, Alex Kenkel ’13, Conner Phillippi ’13 and Will Foote ’12. 4. Paul Mueller, S.J. ’78 with Tommy Reilly ’15 and Dan Reilly ’78 visit the Papal summertime residence in Castel Gondolfo, Italy, April, 2018.
