By BILL STEVENSON Call it one for the ages. The Rotary Club’s 2026 Grosse Ile Home and Garden Tour, held September 12th, proved to be a fitting tribute to celebrate both America and Grosse Ile’s 250th anniversary in “preserving history, building community, and inspiring tomorrows.” The Grosse Ile Home and Garden Tour Committee posted on their website, “This year’s tour was such a wonderful success. We are so grateful to everyone who purchased a ticket, explored our Island’s beautiful historic properties, shared stories, and asked questions.” “A huge thank you goes to our homeowners who so generously opened their doors and shared their special pieces of Grosse Ile history with all of us.” According to Barb Carroll, President of the Grosse Ile Garden Club, “the first tour was in 1963, and it was named ‘The GI Pilgrimage.’ It included eight gardens, the Glass House, and Westcroft Gardens. In 1964, the name became ‘A Touch of Home,’ SEE HOME, PAGE 16

JOSHUA BERWALD AND TROOP #1261 BLAZES NEW TRAIL
Eagle Scout Completes Project
Great news for our outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers! Eagle Scout candidate Joshua Berwald and his Troop #1261 have completed a BILL new trail that stretches from the Bike STEVENSON Path, north of Horsemill Road to Thorofare Road. It further connects to the longestablished path that runs north and south through the Bird Sanctuary. Berwald worked with Township Assessor Tim O’Donnell in studying the plot maps in the Grosse
Ile Woods area, being careful not to encroach on private property in those woods. He further sought and received permission from the Grosse Ile Nature and Land Conservancy to allow the trail to cross their properties, as well as Open Space and Township preserves. Using several platforms of global positioning systems, he was careful in the design and layout to stay within boundaries, as well as sensitive to not removing established trees along the trail. Special thanks go to the DPS, Jon Keim, and the
families of the Scouts for their help in preparing the trail, and spreading gravel and wood chips for the completion of the nature path. Berwald and his #1261 scouts did the rest, with more than 500 total hours of great work. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned to dedicate the trail and the Eagle Scout Court of Honor will be held in the spring, honoring Joshua Berwald and Gavin Mahon of Troop #1261. If you have a chance, get out and enjoy the trail. You’ll be glad you did!

GROWING FAITH
Grosse Ile Churches Partner with Community Grown Gardens CYNDI JENKINS AND JACKIE BROMLEY COMMUNITY GROWN GARDENS
The Grosse Ile Garden of Hope, d/b/a Community Grown Gardens, wants to give a big shout-out to two local churches. We thank Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church and The Church of the Way for all they do to support Community Grown Gardens. The gardens are located at Westcroft Gardens in Grosse Ile, Michigan’s oldest family-owned farm, which is now 250 years old. In June, families from The Church of the Way donated the lumber and time needed to reframe one of the high towers. They spent a full day of hard labor meticulously measuring, cutting and mounting boards to the sides of the high tower so that critters in the area could no longer get into the garden. They weeded all the gardens, which consist of four high tunnels and two outside gardens on less than two acres of land. They also harvested produce, which was donated to local food banks, and planted seeds and seedlings to keep the produce coming. Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church is a big supporter of Community
Grown Gardens. The church provides tremendous support both financially and through member volunteers. It is also involved in educational programs connected with the Grosse Ile Public Schools student program. On Tuesday mornings in July and August, since the summer of 2023, Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church youth have made a standing commitment to show up, tend the beds and support the mission of Community Grown Gardens. What began as a couple of mornings of middle school volunteering has grown into a defining summer tradition, one that has shaped our youth, strengthened our community and demonstrated what can happen when young people are trusted with real, meaningful work. Community Grown Gardens has become a place where faith is lived out through action, a space where young people learn that stewardship is a practice requiring patience, resilience and a willingness to get dirty. Waiting for them each hot Tuesday morning are tasks that keep the gardens moving forward: weeding and watering, tying
up tomatoes, shoveling and dumping bucketsful of compost, pulling handfuls of garlic bulbs, bundling lavender, harvesting zucchini and millions of “ground cherries,” and planting new seeds for the next season. They experience the satisfaction of knowing their labor directly supports local families through the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, the weekly market at Macomb and generous donations to local food pantries. Their efforts and presence strengthen local sustainability and keep the mission of Community Grown Gardens thriving. Every tomato sold, every bunch of greens delivered and every lavender bundle offered at the stand carries the handprints of these young volunteers. This partnership has become one of the most life-giving ministries of our summers, and it is a model that other youth groups can easily emulate. Community Grown Gardens welcomes new partners—churches, schools and community organizations—that
want their young people to experience the same blend of service, learning, teamwork and connection to the earth. They learn skills, discover new interests that stay with them and become part of a mission that nourishes both bodies and spirits. As we look toward future summers, the invitation to serve remains open. There is always more to plant, more to harvest, more to weed, more to water and more to prepare for market. There is always room for more hands, more laughter, more learning and more growth. Community Grown Gardens is a place where young people can make a tangible difference and where that difference branches outward into the wider community. Our GIPC youth have shown what is possible when a group commits to showing up, working hard and serving with joy, and we hope others will join them. The garden is ready, and we are awaiting the next generation of young gardeners, leaders and servants to take root.

Maintaining Open Space: Investing in Grosse Ile’s Preserves and Trails When voters go to the polls in the upcoming November general election, they will see a proposal that that they haven’t seen in more than 20 years—a request for a 1/10 (.10) mill levy for the BILL purpose of “maintenance and STEVENSON repair of public property and trails designated as Greenways/ Open Space properties.” That’s ten cents (10¢ on a dollar) levy. Historically, the Greenways/Open Space committee and program were established by the Township Board in 1994, “whereby vacant land would be purchased by the Township and deed restricted in its natural state.” Two millages were also established and approved by the voters: a 1 mill assessment for procuring privately owned vacant property and a one quarter (.25) mill assessment to maintain the protected preserves. These millages are designated, restricted funds that cannot by law be co-mingled. Acquisition monies can only be used for property procurement. Maintenance funds can only be used for maintenance of Open Space properties and trails. Over the course of years since 1994, residents have supported the Open Space program by
approving four (4) renewals of the acquisition millage, and two (2) renewals of the maintenance millage. The maintenance millage expired in 2002, and has been not assessed since then. At that time, the Greenways/Open Space Committee and the Township Board felt the maintenance fund was sufficient to pay maintenance costs for twenty years. It’s been 24 years. That is why the maintenance millage request is considered a “new” assessment. In 2011, the renewal of the one mill acquisition millage was declined by the voters. Since 2011, the acquisition millage has not been assessed by the
Township. The Greenways/Open Space Committee manages the Open Space program, overseeing 600 acres of Open Space preserves, and seven major trails that need regular maintenance. When trees fall onto the trails, or threaten private property adjacent to Open Space preserves, the Greenways/Open Space maintenance funds pay for the removal. Further, monies have been spent on the addition of culverts to facilitate water flow in the protected wetlands, and eliminate flooding on private property. Additionally, our Dump the Junk, Find a Treasure events held biannually, are paid for by monies in the maintenance fund. The .10 mill levy translates into ten cents on a dollar of taxable value. For example, the average home value on Grosse Ile is $400,000. State law assesses property taxes on half the true market value, or $200,000. A .10 mill is ten cents per thousand, or $20.00 per year. In the polling conducted in creating the new Master Plan, “Preservation of Open Space” was the number 2 priority--an essential component in what makes Grosse Ile a great place to live, work, and play. Remember to vote in the November 3, 2026 general election.

GI Gridiron Finds Momentum With Back-to-Back Wins The Grosse Ile football team has shown resilience throughout the season, bouncing back from a difficult start with two consecutive victories. The Red Devils have picked up their play offensively, putting together strong performances in their most recent games. Grosse Ile opened the season with a close 17-13 loss to Birch Run before falling to New Boston Huron 47-30. The Red Devils continued to battle but came up short against Flat Rock, losing 33-21, and Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central, 28-21. After four straight losses, Grosse Ile responded with a 40-21 victory over Milan. The win gave the Red Devils a boost and helped turn their season in a more positive direction. The team carried that momentum into its homecoming matchup against Carleton Airport. Grosse Ile delivered an impressive performance, defeating the Chargers 4416. The Red Devils’ offense came through with another big scoring night, while the team held Airport to just 16 points. The back-to-back victories have given Grosse Ile something to build on after a challenging start. The Red Devils have shown their ability to bounce back from adversity and put together strong performances on both sides of the ball. With wins over Milan and Carleton Airport, Grosse Ile will look to carry its recent momentum into the remainder of the season and continue building on its improved play.

HOME
Continued from COVER and five years later became ‘The Grosse Ile Garden Club Home Tour,’ running throughout the years til 2015.” “It may informally predate 1927, when our Garden Club was founded.” The Tour was revived four years ago by Amanda Carducci and the team from River Oaks Realty and now includes a partnership with the Grosse Ile Rotary. A colossal thank you to Diane Milkins for her extraordinary efforts in this event. This year’s tour route included [condensed narrative thanks to Grosse Ile Historical Society]: The Rucker-Stanton House (Kyle and Jennifer de Beausset) “Built in 1835 or 1848, at the entrance of Westcroft Gardens. The land’s connection stretches back to the July 6, 1776 deed conveying Grosse Ile to Alexander and William Macomb. The de Beausset family represents the seventh, eighth, and ninth generations on the land.” Eventide (Louis and Kate Lafayette) “At the corner of Groh and Southpointe. Built in 1875. The Lafayettes are the sixth generation of direct family descendants of Louis Groh, and Emeline Peck and their seven children. The Groh family held 500 acres across southern Grosse Ile. In 1878, Louis Groh allowed a crossroad bearing his name to be built in exchange for $1.00. Descendent Isabella Swan, daughter of Emma Groh and James Swan, wrote the Deep
Roots, definitive history of Grosse Ile’s first 100 years. In the 1990s, the current owners inherited the farmhouse from Louis’ mother, Patricia Groh Swan Lafayette.” Patricia Lafayette and Pamela Marsh Frucci founded the Ile Camera. Hawthorne Farm (Jim and Teri Hunter) “1832 home is the second oldest residence on Grosse Ile. Historically known as the Lowrie Farm and property stands on the site of a military stockade built after the War of 1812. When the military abandoned the fort in 1819, John Rucker moved into the stockade with his family. The doors of the Officers’ Quarters in the stockade became the front doors, with the big brass key that locked them still in use. Overlooking the Detroit River, the house features large, sunlit rooms with high ceilings, five original fireplaces, four floor-to-ceiling pocket windows, and spiral staircase shipped from England. In 1971, Richard and Marty Hunter bought the home, and it was on one of the original Garden Club Home Tours shortly thereafter. Saint James Chapel (Episcopal Church) “Built in 1867, from a portion of the estate of Lisette Denison Forth, a former slave who as a freed woman, became Michigan’s first female black landowner. Lisette earmarked her life saving to ‘construct a proper Protestant Episcopal church where rich and poor could worship together.’” “Gordon W. Lloyd was the architect of the Gothic chapel, erected on property owned by James Biddle, brother of Lisette’s former employer.
GROSSE ILE GRAND
St. James Chapel is on the National Register of Historic Places, 1971.” Chateau Elba (Barry Gillan and Chad Novak) “The Ransom E. Olds Mansion and Estate—largest house on Grosse Ile. 30 rooms with grand ballroom on the third floor. The summer home of automobile pioneer Ransom E. Olds Original mansion has built-in pipe organ, solarium, outdoor swimming pool, game room, and beautifully crafted landscape and gardens. During World War II, it served as a USO entertainment center for servicemen stationed at the Naval Air Station Grosse Ile. Olds Carriage House/Garage (Karen Gauthier, widow of Roger Gauthier) “1918 residence, part of the Ransom E. Olds complex. The building evolved alongside the rest of the estate and has transformed into a charming two-story home featuring Italian finishes. The exterior grounds showcase an enormous Red Lace Leaf Maple, supplied from Westcroft Gardens, historical nursery on land owned by the Macomb and Stanton families since 1776.” The Secretary’s House (Bill and Sue Iverson) “Built in 1915 for the business manager of Ransom E. Olds, located at the southern tip of the compound. Among the properties on the estate, the Iverson home is the only one that still features its original distinctive green tile roof. The couple spent two years undertaking thoughtful renovations to preserve the home’s gracious proportions while updating the living spaces. The house offers
expansive views of the Detroit River and Lake Erie. A particularly special touch to the Home Tour this year included live music at each of the venues. Big thanks go to the Missing Cat jazz ensemble at Elba Island: GIHS alumni Alex Stewart, Christian Nunez, and Nick Hahn for their saxophone performance at the Hunter Home; Jim and Jennifer Johnson with organ and cello at St. James; Picks & Bows at the deBeausset home; Bag piper Dave Nagy at the Lafayette home; and Rob Barrett on guitar at the Hickory Island Pavilion. A special thank you to Michael Polite, who was also on scene capturing photos and drone footage throughout the event. After tour-goers completed the rounds, they were treated to an elegant luncheon, held at the historic Hickory Island Pavilion, catered by TV’s Deli & Diner with local produce provided by our Community Grown Gardens, and floral arrangements by Elle and Lily’s Bloom Cottage. River Oaks’ Carducci reflected, “It takes so many people to make an event like this successful. It’s really special to see something that meant so much to this community years ago, come back to life in a new way.” Rotary President Krishelle Kohler and Event Co-Chairperson Diane Milkins echoed the praise, “Our 2026 Grosse Ile Historical Home and Garden Tour to celebrate our 250th was a beautiful success for our beloved island. Happy 250, Grosse Ile!” And many more. . .

It has been more than a decade since I wrote these words about my 76th birthday. As I look back on that October day now, I am reminded once again of the people, experiences and unexpected moments that have shaped my life. 12 years later, I am still grateful for the journey and for the lessons along the way. On October 16, 2014, my brother Wayne posted on Facebook: “Today, more than ever, I seem to be immersed in an infinite state of gratitude. I was reading Emerson this morning and these words spoke to me. ‘Cultivate the habit of being grateful for everything good that comes to you and DAVID give thanks continuously because all things have contributed DYER to your advancement. You should therefore include all things in your gratitude.’ Yes, I am grateful for all things, even those that appeared to be obstacles at the time. I encourage you to adopt this freeing attitude that my spiritual mentor, Ralph Waldo Emerson reminded me on this the 76th birthday of my brother, David who traveled with me through so many early experiences that made us both better men.” On that same 16th day of October, as I entered the fourth quarter century of my life, I did so with great anticipation and undying gratitude. All of the good, the bad and the indifferent have led me to where I am today. Eight months ago that year, our Creative Writers Club assignment was to write about what paradise is. I wrote about how I had not only found paradise, but was living in it. Yes, I have Parkinson’s disease. It is something I have learned to accept and even grown to love because it is a part of me. How could I not love every part of my being and still be able to love others? You cannot give to anyone something you do not have within you. Still on that 16th day of October, I was putting my teams together for a fantasy sports competition when there was a knock at my door. It was my friend Tommy, the 14-year-old son of my dear friend Bethann Rodgers. “My mom wants to see you,” he said. There she was in the driver’s seat of her van, waving with the beautiful smile that could light up any room. Bethann, a former gymnast, was in her 22nd year with multiple sclerosis. She handed me a ribbon-wrapped book. I saw the title Chicken Soup and thought she had given me a book of chicken soup recipes. When I opened it, I found her note: “Dear David, Happy Birthday!! You have enriched my life through our friendship. Thank you for sharing your life story with me. May this book remind you how you are not alone as a Vietnam survivor. ‘Your music’ is enlightening us all. God bless, Bethann.” The book was Chicken Soup for the Veteran’s Soul. I went to bed early that night, anxious to begin reading. There were more than 100 short stories, many about Vietnam, and nearly every one brought tears to my eyes. One story in particular reminded me of my own experience.

Without a doubt, my most vivid memory of Vietnam was the 22-year-old burn patient who died in my hands while crying for his mother. I could hear mumbling but could not understand the words. All I could see were the whites of his eyes. Then I clearly heard his final word: “Mom.” I was the only one to witness it. Other patients needed attention, so I had to move on. Through the years, I often thought about that young man and his mother. She was notified of his death by two strangers in uniform, never knowing that his final thoughts were of her. The story in my book was about Diana Poole, an Army nurse in Vietnam. She served at the 67th Evacuation Hospital in Qui Nhon, less than an hour from the 71st Evac, where I was stationed. I made that trip several times after our hospital was turned over to the South Vietnamese Army in 1971. Diana was a captain and head nurse of the orthopedic ward, which primarily cared for soldiers with traumatic amputations. She had two years of experience at Letterman Army Hospital in San Francisco, but even that could not prepare her for Vietnam. One of her rules was that nurses were not allowed to cry. The wounded and dying men needed our strength. She recalled one badly wounded soldier who could not have been more than 18. She knew there was nothing they could do to save him. “Do you pray?” she asked. He replied, “I know now I lay me down to sleep.” “Good, that’ll work,” she told him. She climbed onto the bed, held him in her arms, and together they prayed: “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.” Then he looked at her and said: “I love you Mamma, I love you” He died peacefully in her arms. She looked around, expecting criticism for breaking her own rule. Instead, she saw the nurses and corpsmen quietly crying. She thought of the soldier’s mother, who would only be told that her son had died from “war injuries.” She wondered what that mother would want to know. Had he died in the field? Had he been alone? Did he suffer? So Diana sat down and wrote her a letter. “I thought she’d want to know that in his final moments his thoughts were of her. Mostly I wanted her to know that he did not die alone.” I looked at the clock. There were five minutes left in that 16th day of October—just enough time to take my medicine and close my eyes. The next morning, as I awakened and saw the light, I prayed to God and expressed my undying gratitude. Now, in two days, at 88 years old, I remain grateful for every experience and every person who has shaped this life of mine.

A Summer of Adventure, Learning, and Fun in Scouting KEITH LAKATOSH
ASSISTANT SCOUTMASTER TROOP #1261
The summer of 2026 was one of high adventures for Grose Ile Scout Troop 1261. It started with the perennial summer camp at Cole Canoe Base in Alger. This is an annual week long camp out where scouts participate in a variety of activities, like canoeing, riflery, archery, swimming, and a whole host of great events. A highlight of the week each year is the Beast Feast, where each troop prepares a unique meal and everyone gathers to try each others’ delicious meals! Not only is this camp a fun experience for the campers, but it presents a great opportunity for Scouts to enroll in Merit Badge classes where they can earn multiple merit badges, including those required to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. This summer, the Troop also participated in two other high adventure events. Some of the troop attended Northern Tier Canoe High Adventure Camp. This year was particularly adventurous because, just one day before we were scheduled to leave, we learned that the Minnesota Boundary Waters we planned to traverse had been completely closed due to uncontrollable wildfires. However, four of the five Scouts on this trip were eligible to earn the coveted Triple Crown of High Adventure award, so we didn’t want to miss the opportunity to attend. The adult advisors, myself and Bryan Mahon,
worked with the parents to arrange an alternate route into the Crown Lands of Canada, including Turtle River and White Otter Lake Provincial Park, allowing the Scouts to avoid the areas affected by the flames and smoke. And to great success as Josh Berwald, Enzo Bonomo, Isaac Granke, and Gavin Mahon all earned their Triple Crown Award for attending Florida Seabase, Philmont Ranch, and now Northern Tier. For the youngest Scout, Henry Lakatosh, this was his first High Adventure, and certainly one he will never forget. The area we ended up visiting was filled with beautiful landscapes, large and small lakes to canoe through, a long river, and even marshes filled with beaver dams and mounds. It was a transformation experience for all of us that culminated with a woodfire
sauna, a cold lake, and self-reflection. While the older scouts were in Canada, many of the younger scouts who were not old enough or not able to attend Northern Tier, had a high adventure of their own. They spent five days hiking 35 miles in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Munising. They prepared for the backpacking adventure with several smaller local campouts, and their efforts paid off as they all earned their Backpacking Merit Badge. This was a great introduction to the splendor of Michigan and prepared them for the traditional Scouting High Adventures that will become available to them in the coming years. For the Scouts who participated, Alex and Matt Trethewey, Nathan Evans, Jonathon Reindeau, Jayden Faulkner and Fredrick Ruble, this was a great opportunity to experience self-sufficient backpacking in the wilderness while enjoying an all-around fun adventure! Grosse Ile Scouting Troop 1261 hopes to provide these types of opportunities to any boys or girls who are interested in the outdoors and seek adventure. This year, Troop 1261 became a Co-Ed troop with the support of the community and a great set of both male and female leaders to provide for safe and adventurous Scouting! For anyone interested in learning more about the Grosse Ile Scout Troop, you can find us on Facebook or email info@gitroop1261.org.

What Happens to Your Digital Life When You’re Gone?
If something happened to you tomorrow, would your family know what to do with your digital life? They might know about your home, vehicle and bank accounts. But would they know where to find your family photos, online accounts, digital documents, rewards points or cryptocurrency? Why are we talking about this? This month, Downriver CU is partnering with Trust & Will to offer members special savings on estate planning. That got us thinking about something many of us may overlook when planning for the future: our digital lives. Your digital life is part of your legacy A 2026 Trust & Will survey of 5,000 U.S. adults found that 48% had no instructions for what should happen to their digital accounts and files when they die. Even among people who had a Will, 23% still had no digital instructions in place. That’s important because your digital estate may include much more than you realize: - Memories: photos, videos, emails and cloud storage - Financial assets: cryptocurrency and certain online financial accounts - Online accounts: email, social media, websites and subscriptions - Rewards: loyalty programs and other online benefits
- Important information: documents and records stored electronically Some of these assets have financial value. Others may be priceless to your family. And unlike a house or vehicle, your family can’t find a digital asset they don’t know exists. Give the people you love a starting point The good news? You don’t have to organize your entire digital life at once. Start with three simple steps: 1. Make an inventory. List your most important digital accounts and assets. Trust & Will recommends taking inventory as a first step in digital estate planning. 2. Decide what you want to happen. Which photos should your family keep? Which accounts should be closed? Are there digital assets that need to be transferred or managed? 3. Make sure the right person knows where to start. Think about who you trust to handle your digital affairs and how they would know where to find the information they’ll need. Even completing step one can make things easier for the people you love. One thing you probably shouldn’t do It might seem convenient to put your usernames and passwords directly into your Will. But that’s generally not a good place for sensitive information. Trust & Will recommends keeping digital-estate information separate because a Will can become public after
death. There’s another practical reason: passwords and online accounts change frequently. A separate, securely maintained inventory is easier to update. Individual online services may also have their own rules and tools for handling an account after someone dies. As you’re creating your inventory, check whether your most important services offer legacy or accountmanagement options. Take five minutes today You don’t need to solve everything today. Instead, ask yourself: “If I couldn’t manage my affairs tomorrow, would someone I trust know what I have and where to start?” If the answer is no, spend five minutes making a list of your most important digital assets. That small step today could mean less searching, fewer questions and more clarity for the people you love later. Ready to look at the bigger picture? Your digital life is only one part of your legacy. If this exercise has you thinking about your larger estate plan, Downriver CU can help connect you with a resource to take the next step. Through October 31, Downriver CU members can save 30% on the initial purchase of a Will or Trustbased estate plan with our partner, Trust & Will. Visit DownriverCU.com/TrustAndWill to learn more and get started.
