The Old Palace dates back to Norman times and was the summer residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury for over 500 years. Regular visitors included Henry III and Queen Elizabeth 1. In 1803 Croydon saw the first horse drawn railway in the world and during the mid 1800s became a vital link in the London to Brighton railway line. In the 1900s, Croydon Aerodrome, London’s first airport, became famous as early commercial flights set off for Europe and the world. One of Greater London’s 11 metropolitan areas, and one of the first commuter towns, Croydon’s excellent rail links to the Capital have drawn people to the area for many years.
