One lesson that everyone will learn throughout their life is perhaps that life is not always fair. No matter how society has progressed, life will present its shares of unfairness. On January 13, 2022, an article reported that an Indonesian woman was flogged 100 times in the province of Aceh for committing adultery, whereas the involved male received 15 lashes. According to the dictionary, flogging is a form of punishment in which the victim is struck repeatedly with a whip or stick. It was reported that the woman was given a harsher sentence by the court because she confessed to investigators in regards to the adultery they committed. On the other hand, the involved man, who was married and the chief of the East Aceh fishery, did not admit to his wrongdoing and denied all accusations. Consequently, judges were not able to prove his wrongdoing. Alternatively, the man was sentenced to 30 lashes for being guilty of “showing affection to a female partner who is not his wife.” However, he successfully appealed to the court in Aceh to reduce the sentence to 15. Despite how controversial flogging may be, it remains to be used as a punishment in Aceh for they impose the sharia law, which allows whipping as a form of punishment for charges such as gambling, adultery, drinking alcohol, and gay sex. In addition to that, the article also reported that the flogging had to be briefly paused as the woman was incapable of bearing the pain. In response to this, human rights groups along with Indonesia’s president, Joko Widodo, have expressed that this punishment is cruel and needs to end. However, Aceh’s population remains to be unwavering and strongly supports the punishment.
Semeru Volcanic Eruption Written by: Dylan On December 4th, 2021, tragedy struck 3 districts in East Java province, Lumajang, Malang, and Biltar, as the Mount Semeru volcano erupted. It was the largest eruption in recent history, producing a hot cloud avalanche containing volcanic materials and heavy ashfall. Consequently, as of December 9th, 2021, 43 lives were taken by this incident. In addition to that, 144 individuals were injured (32 severely injured and 82 mildly injured), 9 were missing, and over 6,500 were evacuated into 125 different locations. The evacuation centers are managed by Badan Penanggulangan Bencana Daerah (BPBD) which is an institution for managing disasters. The institution is implemented in various provinces in Indonesia including East Java. Along with that, they are provided with portable water by The National Water Company. Various ministries also came to aid the evacuees: - Ministry of Public Work and Housing: providing communal toilet - Ministry of Health: Providing health services - Ministry of Social Affairs: providing referral services field kitchens Apart from those ministries, a number of NGOs and community-based organizations provided services and donations to the evacuation centers. President Joko Widodo has also pledged to rebuild infrastructure after visiting the area. Some of the infrastructures that will be rebuilt are the bridge connecting Lumajang to other cities as well as moving over 2,900 houses from the danger zone. A while ago, an earthquake, strong enough for people living around Jakarta to feel struck Banten, but how bad of an impact did this earthquake have on Banten exactly? On January 14, around 4:00 p.m., a large earthquake struck Banten. Many infrastructures including buildings, houses, places of worship, and more were damaged. The chaos was caused by an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6, while the epicenter was in the Indian Ocean. Fortunately, there was no risk of a tsunami. The BMKG (Specialists in Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics) claim that the cause was the subduction activity under a shallow sea level. Overall, 3078 houses were damaged, with almost 400 being badly injured, along with 51 school buildings, 17 healthcare facilities, 21 places of worship, 8 government offices, and 3 business venues. According to the acting chief of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, Abdul Buhari, the Pandeglang Regency is the most shattered area. They claimed that political issues would make things much more complicated. People involved in business have claimed to not look forward to the election of a new president due to that. However, after the incident in 1998. which started to end Suharto’s 32-year rule, presidents are permitted to run 2–5-year terms.
VCT Stage 1 BOOM Esports release Eeyore and Asteriskk BOOM Esports is an Indonesian esports team. They compete in many different games. But here im gonna specify in the valorant industry. Eeyore and Asteriskk are both great assets to the teams valorant roster. They have both been released by the team. The release has been made official through BOOM Esports social media profiles. But the rumors of both of them joining another team has yet to be confirmed. The rumor is that the two of them will be joining a fresh and new team. The team called Boy With Love. They will be joining Famouz, Flynch and Roseaufy in the team Boy With Love. This team is a brand new team jumping into the esports industry. They have yet to announce anything officially, neither have both Eeyore and Asteriskk. But this roster information from the VCT 2022 Official website says otherwise. UCL round of 16, 2022 I’m sure we are all familiar with the UEFA Champions League, especially those of you who loves football. Whether it is to watch the sport or play the sport, or even better, both!! If you are not familiar with the UCL, then let me tell you a little bit about it. The UCL is a world renown football competition that is held strictly for the European continent. There are a total of 32 different teams competing to be the best and be crowned European Champions. Right now the UCL is at its Round of 16 stage. Meaning, there are 16 teams left in the competition right now. These teams are; Man City, PSG, Liverpool, Atletico Madrid, Ajax, Sporting Lisbon, Real Madrid, Inter, Bayern, Benfica, Man United, Villareal, LOSC, RB Salzburg, Juventus and reigning champs Chelsea. These are the 16 teams who are going to compete with each other to qualify for the quarter finals. The teams have been drawn and here are the results; Real Madrid vs PSG, Sporting vs Man City, RB Salzburg vs Bayern, Inter vs Liverpool, Chelsea vs LOSC, Villareal vs Juventus, Atletico Madrid vs Man United and Benfica vs Ajax. There will be 2 legs played, the first leg of the round of 16 that will start on February 16 and end on February 24. The second leg will be played throughout March 9 until March 17.

A Coffee Shop in Jakarta’s Chinatown and its 90-year-old Success Story Tucked away in a dark alley of Glodok, Jakarta, lies a hidden gem ready to shine for whoever is willing to pick it up after a passing glance. This old, rundown coffeehouse conceals many wooden stalls and may seem old and outdated, however it proves that there is a story to tell. Kopi Tak Kie - a history of its simple recipe that brought its success with continuous patrons that come daily for their dose of coffee. The shop is located around Glodok market, which is now famously known as Jakarta’s Chinatorn. While its surroundings have evolved, the coffee shop has one thing that will stay the same: its recipe of old-style coffee. This coffee shop has many patrons with different backgrounds, even people from higher classes have come here. Famous politicians such as President Joko Widodo and Jakarta’s Governor Anies Baswedan have gone to the coffee shop. Starting from a humble beginning, Liong Kwie Tjong named his coffee shop Tak Kie. “Tak” is said to suggest a wise, prudent and modest person, while “Kie” means familiar or fondly remembered. The current owner of the shop commented that Tak Kie describes a modest person, who’s simple in many ways, such as clothes and behavior. When they depart their most significant memories would be of their simplicity and humility. Till this day the name brings up an image of a humble coffee shop with continuous patrons coming from different times or places.

Liong Kwi Tjong’s son, Liong Tjoen, later took over the business with the intent of serving fresh coffee from an alley of Glodok which is often called Gloria alley.
71-year-old Latif Yulus, the current owner of the shop, has said in an interview, “I don’t know what keeps people coming. Perhaps the coffee suits them, so they keep coming.” It is said by Yulus that the shop’s beverages are made out of ground coffee with no additional flavor, just pure coffee. It is significantly different from other, new coffee chains.
Hidden Recipe for Success With its name meaning simplicity, this coffee shop seems to have a way for success.
While nowadays other cafes serve a variety of coffee flavors, Kopi Es Tak Kie serves only black coffee and milk coffee. Both have alternate options of hot or cold. Black coffee is priced at 20,000 Rupiah (US$1.40), and milk coffee is priced at 22,000 Rupiah. In an interview with their loyal, longtime customer Penny Liaw, she has said that her preference would be an iced milk coffee. Claiming to taste different from average coffee, she had asked them how they could’ve made it so special. The coffee beans are transported from Lampung, Sumatra, and they blend their coffee only once every morning. The shop opens daily as soon as the coffee is ready, around 6 to 7am, and closes at 2pm as there wouldn’t be a lot of customers. Usually this would be due to the coffee running out by midday, after that customers have to satisfy themselves with a cup of tea. Apart from coffee and tea, the shop serves a variety of other dishes such as chicken noodle (mie ayam), meatball (baso), nasi tim chicken (steam rice with chicken), and nasi campur (rice and pork). A long time patron, known as Iwan, has been frequenting the shop for more than 10 years. He seeks his favorites, nasi campur and a cup of hot black coffee. He states that everything is just in the right quantity and that they all blend well.
The Cycle of Customers
Yulus claims that their customers include both Muslims and Nonmuslims. Among those who have made it to the coffee shop, civil servant Bambang Wahyudi and his colleague Iwan Gunawan decided to go to the shop because Mr Anies, the city governor, once came to the place. Wahyudi didn't notice this place as his impression was that the aesthetic of everything seemed old and untidy, but perhaps it was purposefully done to make it look like the days of when it first opened. His friend Gunawan thought of visiting since many of his friends have posted pictures of this place on Instagram. He was glad to be able to stop at this shop and is willing to visit again in the future. Furthermore, Jokowi had several visits in the past even before he was elected as the head of state. His first visit was during his campaign for governor in 2013. His favorite drink was iced black coffee. A portrait of the famous president is hung on a wall of the shop, attracting people to Kopi Es Tak Kie. Indonesia’s Largest Stadium Turns to Shorebirds to Maintain Grass Turf With Jakarta International Stadium under construction, five birds with their thin, long pink legs were given an important task that must be carried out daily: maintaining the grass field and making it bug-free, within what would be Indonesia’s largest stadium. The birds are trained on a field of hybrid grass, with 95% of it being natural grass while 5% is synthetic grass. The stadium management is reluctant to use pesticides, so that the stadium will be more eco-friendly. “We have some uniqueness in our project, because we are using the sharp eyes of birds and their animal instincts to spot insects in the grass that cannot be seen by human eyes. For this, we use pied stilts from Boyolali (in Central Java) that can eat pests and effectively maintain the fertility of the grass without using pesticides.” said Mr Muhammad Rizky Fauzi, a construction manager in Jakarta Propertindo. Pied Stilts are shorebirds that are typically found in borders of open wetland, coastal ponds and other marshy land. Their slim posture means that they can move fast and have quick frisky movement to help them catch up to their prey. Fun fact, Jakarta International stadium is the first ever stadium in Indonesia to use birds as a strategy to maintain grass turfs. This decision was a recommendation by their construction specialist, who favors a green management while constructing the stadium according to FIFA standards. The aim is to receive a Green Platinum certificate by Green Building Council Indonesia. Their criteria is very strict, but the stadium management wants to use sustainable development to receive a positive view.
Now the new stadium has been recognized as Indonesia's first platinum-certified green stadium. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, the deadline of the grand inauguration was later pushed to March of this year.
Condition of the Shorebirds According to Mr Fauzi, caring for the bird isn't as complicated as it may seem. They were given other foods containing nutrients such as grain to make sure they were all well-fed with the right amount of vitamins to keep them healthy. The birds are released every morning for about four hours on an 11.22 km2 training field while accompanied with several animal handlers. Pied stilts cannot fly high. They can roam freely though they require supervision to ensure they do not run away or escape. Eventually on future development, once the main stadium is finished, they aim to add up to 30 pied stilts to maintain the bigger field to keep using eco-friendly ways. Furthermore, there is always a helping hand since humans are involved in maintaining the grass. Few fertilizers are added every month and machines are used to keep the grass combed and mowed. Any patches of grass left uncombed are left for the birds. Since the birds’ natural environment is a wet habitat, they are able to carry out their job even during the rainy season, making them suitable to maintain the field.

at the start of a new semester! With the first month of the new semester coming to an end very soon, we here at Scoop understand that starting school again after a while can be a bit difficult and things might get hard to get used to especially for students who are just returning to campus this January. So here we’ve compiled a list of things that you can do to stay motivated and stay on track this semester!

use a planner Now while the prospect of using a planner might seem daunting at first, starting one at the beginning of a new year can be helpful with organizing your day and allow you to keep track of your to-do list whilst having fun decorating it. CREATE A DESIGNATED STUDY AREA While it’s easy to get away with studying on your bed with all the lights turned off, creating a specific area of your room to specifically study can allow you to focus more and be more productive with your tasks. Some tips to craft this space include: figuring out which lighting works best for you, clearing your desk, decorating the space the way you like it, getting a new chair that feels comfortable for you, etc.
Be clever with your time With all the distractions that may come up with nearly daily in-person classes this week, it’s important to be on top of your tasks and to balance your time properly. A great way to get on top of this is to make a schedule for yourself. This can be done through writing an hourly timetable or even a loose to-do list to remind yourself of what needs to be done. One of my favorite ways to do this is to use my Notion planner to organize the things I need to get done for my day, here’s a template that I personally love! take breaks Finally, don’t forget to take time to rest and relax. Sometimes, we can get carried away with completing our assignments and work ourselves to the bone, but it’s important to remember that going over our limits can do more harm than good at times. I like to personally set a time wherein I stop doing my work and simply tell myself to rest, this allows me to start working earlier and get to bed without worrying about my tasks.
Things to try in 2022 2022 is a new year, we see that everything has changed drastically, starting from trends all the way to wearing a mask every day. However, here are some ideas of things you can do this year either alone, with friends, or with family.
