QUANTUM SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY MASTER’S PROGRAM

GRADUATE PROGRAM As a student in a master’s program at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, your education will combine technical rigor with hands-on, interdisciplinary learning. Full-time students may complete the program in one academic year over the fall, spring, and summer terms. You’ll build the specialized skills to become a leader in your field and develop solutions to society’s greatest challenges.

QUANTUM SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, MS This program provides a thorough foundation in quantum computing, quantum information, quantum devices, and quantum optics, complemented by rigorous training in mathematical methods, programming, and experimental quantum optics.

CORE CURRICULUM AREAS

QUANTUM COMPUTING AND QUANTUM ALGORITHMS

MATHEMATICAL METHODS FOR QUANTUM INFORMATION

QUANTUM PROGRAMMING AND SIMULATION

ACADEMIC CORE PHYSICS OF QUANTUM DEVICES

QUANTUM OPTICS AND EXPERIMENTAL METHODS

The curriculum is intentionally structured to bridge foundational theory and real-world implementation. Students complement the core sequence with electives drawn from quantum mechanics, nanoelectronics, cryptography, machine learning, condensed matter physics, and quantum communication, allowing them to tailor the program toward hardware, computation, or information science pathways. NYU Tandon’s location in New York City provides proximity to a growing ecosystem of quantum research, startups, financial institutions, and government partners, supporting professional development and collaboration beyond the classroom.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT HANDS-ON QUANTUM OPTICS AND EXPERIMENTAL TRAINING A defining feature of the Quantum Science and Technology MS program is its dedicated Quantum Optics Laboratory, where students work directly with experimental quantum systems. Through a sequence of guided experiments, students investigate single-photon phenomena, quantum interference, entanglement, and quantum communication protocols. This laboratory experience reinforces core theoretical concepts while building practical skills in optical alignment, photon detection, data analysis, and experimental design—capabilities that are increasingly sought after across the quantum workforce.

WORLD-CLASS RESEARCH HUB NYU’S NEW QUANTUM INSTITUTE Quantum science is the key to unlocking groundbreaking advances and revolutionizing a wide range of industries. As a leader in the global quantum ecosystem, NYU has launched a Quantum Institute that is a world-class research hub in the heart of New York City. The Quantum Institute fosters interdisciplinary innovation through the application of quantum information sciences in physics, engineering, materials science, computer science, biology, chemistry, and medicine. Housed in a 1,000,000-square-foot facility, the Quantum Institute is equipped with creative spaces and cutting-edge tools that enable inventors to solve the most pressing scientific questions and technological challenges we face. It will serve as a focal point for collaboration between academia and the private sector, including NYC’s dynamic startup community.

Rupak Chatterjee is an industry associate professor in the Department of Applied Physics at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering and the program director of the MS in Quantum Science and Technology. He played a key role in developing the program’s core curriculum and teaches several of its foundational courses, covering quantum mechanics, quantum information, quantum programming, and the mathematical foundations of quantum computing. His research interests include quantum machine learning and the application of quantum information to quantum field theory.

John Di Bartolo is an industry professor of physics and chair of the Department of Applied Physics at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering. He led the development and launch of both the quantum technology minor and the MS program in Quantum Science and Technology. He has organized two quantum computing hackathons, including a multi-institutional event with Columbia University and City College of New York. His teaching includes graduate-level quantum mechanics and undergraduate coursework in quantum programming and computation.
