BEVERLEY KNIGHT absolutely rips it up in the UK premiere of this TONY Award winning musical put together by Bon Jovi’s David Bryan and Joe DiPietro, who totally capture the feel of the music from the 50s and early 60s, making every song sound like an unheard B Side that must have slipped by as you bopped away to the hits of the day, writes Michael Holland... Memphis tells the true story of how ‘race’ music was kept underground until determined white boys managed to get it played on mainstream radio, so you get to hear the N-Word and examples of extreme – and tolerated - racism, and see ‘white crackers coming down here to steal music from the black folk’. There is a love story threaded through this historical narrative that highlights the ignorance of the time, but the major player is the music and how it overcame the barriers set by those who knew what they did was wrong but did not want to accept it. The characters in Memphis have been built up from amalgamations of real people who were around at the time, and the story is hung on a broad spine of real events to give the aura of authenticity. And anyone who knows this history will be thankful for its telling in such a way. The music is great, the choreography and dancing is fantastic and the performances are faultless. In the real world life would be much more dismal and dreary if these fictional events had never taken place. In my opinion this is the best new musical around.
