CANCER: IT’S GOTTA END SOMETIME!

FORMER LOCAL BASKETBALL STAR IS SHOOTING TO HELP THOSE AFFECTED WITH THE DISEASE HE SURVIVED. “MAN & WOMAN OF THE YEAR” MAY SOUND LIKE THE TITLE OF A BEAUTY PAGEANT, BUT FOR THE LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY, THIS PARTICULAR COMPETITION REPRESENTS MUCH MORE THAN WHAT ITS NAME IMPLIES.

Every year, the LLS hosts a spirited 10 week fundraising competition where dynamic, enthusiastic candidates from the community campaign to earn the LLS titles “Man & Woman of the Year.” Candidates such as Dominick Tambon, an orthopedic sales representative and survivor of Hodgkins Lymphoma, use unstoppable ambition to motivate their fundraising efforts in a large-scale capacity. Tambon was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma in the fall of 2014. During one of the lowest points in his treatment, he made a deal with the man upstairs that he would find a way to give back to the community after he was cured. Aside from educating others and raising awareness of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Tambon said his campaign’s biggest goal is to raise as much money as possible. Tambon got involved with the LLS about one year after his diagnosis. His campaign slogan derives from his days playing basketball at Savannah High. Tambon remembers during the hardest times of practice his coaches would say, “It’s gotta end sometime” to keep them pushing through. Even before Tambon got involved with the LLS, he had always wondered how young people were able to handle the same disease he struggled and fough with as an adult. “These are just little kids. They shouldn’t have to go through that stuff,” Tambon said. The LLS’s 2016 campaign kicked off on Thursday, March 3rd. Every dollar raised counts as one vote, and the titles are awarded to the man and woman with the most votes at the end of the campaign’s 10 week run. The fundraising competition culminates with a celebration of all the candidates’ efforts at the Grand Finale Gala on Friday, May 13th at Savannah Station.
