Cruel end for trapped possum Liz Bell liz@mpnews.com.au THE RSPCA is investigating a “horrific� case of cruelty in Rye after a young brushtail possum was caught in a steeljawed trap tied to a wooden trellis.

It is unknown how many hours the distressed animal was forced to hang by its crushed paw at the vacant holiday house before a nearby resident saw it and reported it to a peninsula wildlife shelter.

The possum was barely alive when its plight was discovered and it had to be euthanised by a vet. “This case was really horrific, as the pain and fear the animal suffered was extreme,� Ms Marmion said. “We’re lucky to have a lot of wildlife on the peninsula and possums are protected by the law, so it makes me angry and sad that some people won’t make an effort to live peacefully with them.�

the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, which has referred the case to the RSPCA. RSPCA Victoria senior Inspector Tiffany Page confirmed an investigation was underway into a report of a possum trapped in a steel-jawed trap at a property in Rye, but was unable to comment further.

Under the prevention of cruelty to animals’ regulations, it is an offence to set steel-jawed traps, regardless if they have caused injury to an animal or not.

It is also illegal to buy steel-jawed traps unless the buyer can prove to be a

museum or antiques collector.

Offenders face up to 24 months’ jail and fines of up to $75,000.

Under DELWP regulations, it is also illegal to “harass or interfere with possums� in any way.

Ms Marmion, a wildlife carer for about 30 years, said that while most peninsula residents enjoyed living in a natural environment, there were still some who refused to try to live peacefully with wildlife. “I’ve seen some terrible things, such as someone who had illegally trapped a possum and left it in the cage on a hot

NEWS DESK Art ‘precinct’ open for inspection MAKERS, doers and thinkers in Mornington’s self-proclaimed “artist precinct” will open their doors in November to publicly show their talents.

Fast fun: Hamish Hardeman has loved the thrill of the track since he was a child.

This chippy’s in the fast lane ROSEBUD carpenter Hamish Hardeman is well on his way to taking on the world in the increasingly popular sport of GT3 car racing.

The quietly-spoken 23-year-old won the Porsche CT3 cup challenge at Philip Island after a six-round contest against participants from all over the country.

Hardeman, who has been racing for about six years, developed a passion for the sport as a child when he followed his father – who raced an MX5 - to the tracks at Sandown, Winton and Philip Island.

While he started off racing motor bikes, by the

time he was in secondary school Hardeman was racing cars on the circuit and was the envy of his mates at The Peninsula School.

“I used to get out of having to go to Saturday school sport, which was compulsory for everyone else, and my mates thought I was pretty lucky,” he said.

Car racing has already taken Hardeman around Australia and in 2014 to Malaysia where he competed in a GT3 12-hour endurance event.

His next step is the Porsche Carrera Cup in 2017, which runs alongside the V6 Super cars, and after that the world beckons.

Golfers sizzle

“I’d like to race at the Australian Grand Prix, and eventually I think racing overseas is where I want to be and where the money is.”

For a young person starting out it is an expensive pursuit, with a full year of racing costing about $250,000.

Luckily Hardeman can take time off work when required and has the support of family and a small sponsorship base.

But more sponsors are needed to help him follow his dreams.

MP accuses councillors over backing for grant Liz Bell liz@mpnews.com.au TWO Mornington Peninsula Shire councillors have been accused of misleading the state government which gave $588,000 towards extending the Rye boat ramp.

Nepean MP and Rye resident Martin Dixon, who has announced his intention not to run at the next election, told parliament that It was “misleading of the council” to advise the Andrews Labor government that there was community support in Rye to add a fourth lane to the threelane ramp.

The Liberal MP said the grant was based on the council’s assurance to the government that the project had broad community support.

But the community was, in fact, “vehement” in its opposition the plan, he said.

“They have been consistent in this view for years and have made this known to council officers and to me on numerous occasions,” he said.

Mr Dixon has called for the money to be spent on the boat ramp at Rosebud, which he described as “the main town of the Mornington Peninsula”.

His allegations come as 50 candidates line up for the 11 seats on the council in next month’s elections.

But Nepean Ward councillors Tim Rodgers and Hugh Fraser have hit back, accusing Mr Dixon of “playing politics”.

Premier joins mosque’s peace movement

THE Premier Daniel Andrews was among four politicians and more than 400 guests at the annual peace symposium at the Ahmadiyya Muslim community Australia’s Bait-ul-Salam mosque in Langwarrin on Friday.

The Ahmadiyya muslims, a movement which describes itself as a “fast-growing international revival movement within Islam”, has been hosting the peace symposium for the past 13 years, with the aim of promoting an understanding of Islam and other faiths.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Australia national president Imam Inam-ul-Haq Kauser said the symposium provides a “unique platform” for leaders of all faiths to sit under one roof and discuss ways to establish lasting peace in society.

He said the message of peace and harmony is more “crucial than it has ever been”.

“Our objective is to bring communities together and making (sic) an alliance with the help of religious, secular and political leadership to establish peace and harmony in our society.”

Mr Andrews arrived a little late after being driven from Moorabbin airport after inspecting flood damaged western Victoria.

His attendance at the symposium comes in the same week Pauline Hanson gave her controversial first speech in the Seante, where she said Australia risks being “swamped" by Muslims.

Ms Hanson, known for her sensationalist views on immigration and multiculturalism, claims Islam represents a threat to Australia’s way of life, and has called for borders to be closed to immigrants.

Other guest speakers at the symposium included the MP for Holt Anthony Bryne, shadow minister for multicultural affairs Inga Peulich, consul general of India Manika Jain, and Frankston Uniting Church’s the Rev Jay Robinson.

The Ahmadiyya muslims, a movement originating from Punjab, British India in the 1800s, believes that God sent Ahmad, like Jesus, to end religious wars, condemn bloodshed and reinstitute morality, justice and peace.

Poll issues range from Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au FOOTPATHS, foreshores … and frogs. There is seemingly no end – and some cases no relation - to the variety of issues and concerns listed by the 50 candidates for the 11 seats on Mornington Peninsula Shire Council.

Easily added to the three mentioned above are “over development”, waste disposal, planning for coastal “villages” and, certainly an elephant in the room, how much councillors should be allowed to spend above their $29,000 a year stipend ($92,000 for the mayor).

The candidates’ buzz word for this election is community. Although not a definable issue, community will be a frequent persuader used by candidates in their search for votes.

With just four of the shire’s current councillors seeking re-election, the outcome is certain to be a game changer for voting patterns on the council.

Although it’s guaranteed that seven councillors will not have been re-elected from the current council, some of the “new” faces sitting in the council chamber after the 22 October election may be familiar, with several former councillors deciding it may be their time, again.

New alliances will eventually be formed within the council, but for now and at least a short time after the election, the shire’s newly-elected community representatives will be relatively free of old animosities.

Like it or hate it, Arthurs Seat is again about to be equipped with a chairlift, or rather a gondola

ride called the Eagle. Candidates old and new are singing its praises and probably relieved that’s one battle they will not have to face.

Surprisingly, finding a site for a swimming pool at Rosebud may again soak up council time.

Rex Griffin, a former mayor and still current councillor of the City of Whittlesea, has nominated for Seawinds ward. Mr Griffin is moving to his former holiday home at Dromana and says he has been a regular in the public gallery at meetings of Mornington Peninsula council for the past five years.

He says the council has been “like a cesspool, with councillors arguing and fighting. Enough’s enough”.

Mr Griffin says disposing waste off the peninsula is expensive and notes that the Rye tip “can be kept open for another 18 years”.

He believes that with his help and experience the shire can get more money from state and federal governments.

Regarding a swimming pool at Rosebud, or SPA (Southern Peninsula Aquatic Centre), Mr Griffin says “you can throw a pool anywhere” but enthuses about “how Lorne and other places have pools on the foreshore”.

“There’s room down there [on the Rosebud foreshore]. It’s accessible and I can’t see a problem with it going there.”

Former councillor and mayor (2011-12) Frank Martin, although living in Briars ward, is also seeking election in Seawinds.

Mr Martin wants to see the councillors’ code of conduct “revisited and enforced”; is wary of the increasing number of high density developments; and wants changes to the special charge

Bid for a private Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au A MORNINGTON Peninsula council candidate has withdrawn an application for a planning scheme amendment that would allow planes to be on her property abutting Tyabb airfield.

Lisa Dixon and her husband Ken Ingersoll had sought approval to amend planning rules over their property in Stuart Rd, Tyabb.

Ms Dixon says she intends to stand for the Watson ward seat left vacant since the resignation in May of former councillor, Lynn Bowden.

“It has been a massive journey, not to mention the financial and emotional toll it has placed on us,” Ms Dixon said in a letter asking the shire’s strategic planning manager Allan Cowley to end the amendment process.

The shire’s decision to exhibit the planning scheme amendment came despite a 2014 ruling that any decision on use of the site must wait until completion of the Tyabb Airfield Precinct Plan

which is expected to begin this month.

Objectors claimed the move would give the Peninsula Aero Club member Ken Ingersoll “backdoor approval for a hangar in spite of the still-valid 2004 reasons for it not being there” (“Anger over hangar plan” The News 19/7/16).

Tyabb and District Ratepayers’ Group sees the use of private land to store aircraft as “an incremental expansion of the airfield”.

Ms Dixon’s letter to Mr Cowley thanked him for the “inordinate amount of time and effort you have spent over the past five years in trying to deliver an outcome for the No. 2 shed at 62 Stuart Rd”.

The shire has not been able to provide The News with details of how much it has spent on processing the planning amendment requested by Ms Dixon and Mr Ingersoll.

Ms Dixon has also asked council to not order demolition of the shed, saying that they would continue to abide by a Victorian and Civil Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) ruling “of leaving it vacant”.

Shire’s backing lifts SAVE the Dromana Pier campaigners are buoyed by Mornington Peninsula Shire’s support for their cause, even though any decision on its future ultimately rests with Parks Victoria.

Councillors voted at Monday night’s Special Council meeting – the last before the shire goes into caretaker mode – to advocate for the redevelopment of the pier to ensure its long-term survival.

The group’s secretary Ray Barnard-Brown said the shire’s backing was a much-needed “shot in the arm” for their campaign. “It gives us added legitimacy,” he said.

It also reinforces community approval for the 1862 pier – extended in 1873 and rebuilt in the 1950s – which was reflected in a 7000-signature petition collected at a foreshore rally on Australia Day. A 2012 report by the Association for Building Community in Dromana had predicted the life span of the existing pier, even accounting for recent repairs, was only eight-10 years.

A shire planning report recommends the advocacy stance be directed at Parks Victoria and the

community to frogs schemes for constructing footpaths: “we don’t need concrete footpaths everywhere”.

Although previously a councillor in Red Hill ward, Mr Martin says he’s long had an affinity with Dromana, Rosebud and Rye. While wanting some clearing along the foreshore to make way for more tables and chairs, he says “SPA is done and dusted, as long as the pool goes somewhere”.

Without “committing” to a preferred site Mr Martin said “SPA is gone off the foreshore at the moment. If it’s a no, no, no, [we should] go to the second best place”.

Numerically, the Briars ward is the most interesting with 15 candidates contesting three seats.

A plan to spend up to $825,000 on a skatepark is an issue, with the shire choosing to renege on a lease with Mt Martha Tennis Club to free up the chosen site. The site has been approved by Heritage Victoria, but it seems the shire overlooked the fact that it had leased the land to the tennis club until 2023.

There will be at least two new councillors in the ward after the October poll and plenty of time to force a backflip and moving the skatepark to Ferrero Oval if Heritage Victoria will not approve any other site on the former parade ground.

Among those seeking election to Briars ward is Kevin Murphy, secretary of the Mt Martha House management committee, which is opposed to the skatepark on the parade ground.

Another Briars ward candidate, Stewart Lockie, said the skatepark proposal was backed by many families but questions were being raised “over why it has taken so long”. One of

his aims, if elected, is to hear people saying "the shire are doing a good job".

Steering clear of the skatepark, Briars candidate Rebecca Taylor is perhaps the first person to seek public finance for a shire election campaign.

“Running for council is something I need to do in order to preserve the only stable frog population left in Mt Eliza. They live in a reservoir earmarked for redevelopment, but I believe natural habitats in suburban areas add value to communities,” she states in her pitch for support on the GoFundMe website.

Ms Taylor also mentions the need for better parking and desire for a system “that doesn’t see [pre-school] children travelling outside their communities or left with no place at all”.

The Briars ward has three councillor vacancies; five candidates are contesting the singlecouncillor Cerberus ward; eight in the two-councillor Nepean ward; six in Red Hill, which is also represented by one councillor; 10 in threecouncillor Seawinds ward; and six candidates are after the single seat in Watson ward.

Councillors not seeking re-election are the mayor Graham Pittock, Anne Shaw, David Gibb, Andrew Dixon, Tim Rodgers and Tim Wood; Lynn Bowden resigned in May. Fifteen of the 50 candidates are women.

At the start of the previous four-year council term four of the 11 councillors were women.

Ms Dixon said “personal attacking from the Tyabb ratepayer group - while not acceptable was born out of the continual frustration of being promised a township plan. We were the ‘cat’ to kick to make themselves heard”.

Ratepayers’ group members Peter and Val Davis said in July that there was still a VCAT order in force prohibiting use of the land for aircraft storage, which would lapse if the amendment application was successful.

In 2011 Mr Ingersoll was ordered by Frankston Magistrates’ Court to pay a $10,000 “bond” for building the shed without a permit in 2010 and for storing 11 aircraft on the site.

VCAT also ordered Mr Ingersoll to stop using the shed as a hangar and remove any aircraft.

The couple’s Low Density Residential Zone land is on the east side of the Tyabb airfield, and contains a house and two large sheds.

Mr Cowley told the council in April that a VCAT order to remove the shed “was deferred pending broader consideration of issues relating to the Tyabb airfield and is no longer in force”.

“In this case a site specific amendment under Clause 52.03 (Site Specific Exemptions) is proposed, to make the most limited change possible in order to enable the use of the existing building by the owner of the property for private storage.”

The preparation of a precinct plan for the Airfield was one of the recommendations of the Tyabb township plan adopted by council in May 2012.

Shire officers have recommended that the amendment be abandoned. “This will not prevent consideration of a new amendment proposal in future.”

The Save the Dromana Pier group is talking up a mail survey by Nepean MP Martin Dixon’s office which received more than 1000 positive replies out of 4000 forms sent out canvassing community views on the pier.

“That was pretty extraordinary,” electorate office manager Russell Joseph said. “We’ve had even more dribbling in - there’s more like 1100 now.”

Mr Barnard-Brown said the community response was “remarkable”. His group also believes there is a strong case for extending the pier to its original length – about twice its present length – to enable bigger boats, and possibly ferries, to dock when road traffic reaches gridlock during holidays and peak hours over the next few years. They say the depth now is only about waist high at low water.

“There’s an opportunity for fast ferries to come from Melbourne for the wineries and the new Arthurs Seat Eagle chairlift.”

Medal win at the big event PEARCEDALE man Bill Griffiths has been smiling ever since his son Sam’s equestrian success at the Rio Olympics.

The international rider and member of the Australian eventing team won a team bronze medal and placed fourth individually making him the equestrian team’s best performer at the games.

“It was a great effort,” Mr Griffiths (senior) said last week.

“He did a great job for Australia; the Germans were red-hot favourites but Sam put us back into a gold medalwinning position – it was a great effort, he did brilliantly.”

Day one of the eventing was dressage, day two cross country where Sam tackled 44 jumps against

the clock and day three was show jumping, which involved teams and individual performances.

“Sam was the first rider out and he was one of only three riders without any jumping penalties,” Mr Griffiths said.

Sam, 44, who is based in England with his wife Lucy – also an elite equestrian – began riding at the Pearcedale Pony Club 35 years ago.

“We came here in the 1950s,” Mr Griffiths said. “Sam’s born-and-bred Pearcedale and went to Pearcedale Primary and then Peninsula School.

He left for England 15 years ago for time off after finishing a geography degree at Monash University and decided to stay and make a career for himself as an event rider and horse

trainer.” Sam’s career highlights include being a member of the Australian team at the London Olympics in 2012, being a reserve for the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Games, winning the 2014 Badminton Horse Trials, and placing 16th individually and fourth in the team event at the World Equestrian Games in Normandy the same year.

“He is very Australian, even though he lives in England, and has 15-20 horses in training,” his dad said.

It’s not hard to tell why the horse riding events were a non-negotiable part of the Griffiths’ Olympic viewing.

Festival on Main CENTRAL Mornington will again be the setting for art, culture, food and wine during the 21st Main Street Mornington Festival on Sunday 16 October.

There will be entertainment for all ages from up-and-coming artists and wellseasoned performers, including pop, jazz, blues, and retro, to folk, country, acoustic and indie.

Seasonal produce, food and a selection of wine will be available.

This family-friendly event runs 11am-5pm and is organised by the volunteers of Northern Mornington Peninsula Tourism.

The couple’s business Wagners Saddlery supplied the bespoke clothing for all members of the eventing, dressage, show jumping and Paralympic teams.

And, now that the fortnight’s frenetic competition is over, they can relax a little and take stock of another hectic period in their business lives.

Ms Wagner said she and Peter and their six staff were proud of the way competitors looked in their tailored jackets, riding breeches, shirts, boots and hats.

They also dressed gold medalwinning pentathlete Chloe Esposito for the show jumping segment of her event, as well as her brother Max, also a pentathlete, and former Pearcedale equestrian competitor Sam Griffiths, now based in the UK. Ms Wagner says the heat and humidity of the host country played a huge part in their choice of fabric, which is sourced from Switzerland.

“It has to have the ability to stretch and be breathable and comply with the colour code,” she said.

“It has to look good, be comfortable and work to the best of the rider’s ability.”

October for golf GOLF courses across the Mornington Peninsula will throw open their doors for Golf Month in October. The national campaign encourages people to get involved in golf.

Backed by the golf industry and promoted through a national marketing campaign, clubs and facilities around the country hope to re-engage with lapsed golfers, get new people into the game and promote the benefits of golf club membership.

Golfers on the peninsula can join clubs and attend women’s days. Special green fee rates are being offered to players at all levels at The Dunes, where golfers can play 18 holes for $36 on Tuesday 18 October and there is a 50 per cent membership special at Devilbend Golf Club.

Wagner’s, which was established in 1979, also outfitted the Australian equestrian team for the Beijing and Sydney Olympics as well as the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky, US, in 2013.

Team officials contracted the company for 22 riding outfits, but Ms Wagner would not divulge the size of the deal.

“We were approached because we had done it before and had been recommended,” she said.

“We showed our range of fabrics and colours and demonstrated how we could put it all together and we were accepted.”

A dressage competitor herself, Ms Wagner said it was a test of her skills to obtain correct jacket, breaches and helmet measurements via email from the Australian riders based in the US, England, Germany, the Netherlands and England, as well as the two pentathletes in Hungary.

“As exciting as it is, it’s a bit of

a nightmare, too,” she admitted.

“Everything’s got to be made in time and we have the first eight to 10 riders settled but a decision on the others is not made until the last minute and they are all different shapes and sizes.

“We are lucky with the advances in technology that allow us to make outfits that look good and are superior in comfort.

“It’s nice when it’s all done and everything fits and looks good; it’s such a relief.”

Council acted too soon by lifting expenses

Skatepark planned for wrong site The committee of Mt Martha Tennis Club would like to re-state the club’s position for the proposed skatepark with the following facts: The collective membership of the club is not opposed to a skatepark situated on the parade grounds [at the corner of the Esplanade and Kilburn Grove].

The proposed location (hard up against the existing four tennis courts) is unacceptable, as it will significantly impact on the unique environment required to coach and play tennis.

The club has a seasonal membership of around 500 players and was recently ranked the 49th largest tennis club in Victoria. Many of our family members would enjoy the use of a skatepark.

The club has 40 teams of which 25 are juniors.

We recognise serving our youth is one of our primary roles.

Many teams cannot play a home game due to the lack of court availability. This overcrowd-

ing has been occurring for an extended period of time and many committees have worked with Mornington Peninsula Shire to improve the club’s facilities.

The shire has recognised the urgent and immediate need for improved facilities and has rebuilt the clubhouse and upgraded the Watson Rd tennis courts for the club and community use.

All members are grateful to the shire for its assistance with these upgrades. The shire had proposed and planned a fifth tennis court for the club as part of a strategy plan. It now appears that the shire wants to replace the area for the additional court with a skatepark.

The club is disappointed that it now finds itself in the invidious situation of having to publicly defend a position that the shire rescinded on – that of an additional tennis court on the parade ground.

I was appalled to read about the adoption by Mornington Peninsula Shire Council of an increased expenses policy (“Council backs cost increase” The News 13/9/16). This council leaves a lot to be desired and has little regard for the ratepayers it represents as evidenced by this non-essential use of ratepayers’ money.

With the forthcoming council elections this issue should have been left to the incoming council.

I fail to understand what outgoing councillors Anne Shaw, Andrew Dixon and David Gibb had to gain by voting for this divisive issue.

Decision making has never been a strong point with this council but it seems to work when it is in councillors’ own interests.

This generous expense issue which allows each councillor to spend up to $30,000 over the four-year term (in addition to their stipend) should be addressed by the incoming council.

I also believe that the $4000 entertainment allowance should be part and parcel of their $29,000 stipend, not an extra.

It may be time that the performance of this council should be the subject of a state government review and it may be that the appointment of an administrator may be appropriate.

Graham Lee, McCrae Editor: Last month the Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass interviewed the mayor Cr Graham Pittock, CEO Carl Cowie and governance manager Joe Spiteri as part of an investigation into secrecy in local government. Complaints about Mornington Peninsula Shire have been made to the Ombudsman’s office by several individuals and community-based organisations (“Shire part of secrecy probe” The News 2/8/16).

Applaud openness So ex-councillor Brian Stahl is shocked that “a political party has openly stated that it will field candidates” in the October Mornington Peninsula Shire Council election (“Keep politics out of local government” Letters 20/9/16). Perhaps in Mr Stahl’s experience the Greens’ openness and honesty is a rare commodity.

We feel very strongly that voters deserve respect and as Greens we have no difficultly in declaring our endorsement of candidates for the council elections who share our values of community, environment and a positive vision for a sustainable Mornington Peninsula.

We challenge all other candidates to to declare their endorsements, political allegiances and connections, and the sources of their campaign funding.

Contrary to Mr Stahl’s depiction of party influence, voters can be assured that candidates endorsed by the Greens will represent their communities and act in the best interests of the peninsula. He appears to have overlooked the Greens position on local government representatives; we strongly support the provisions of the Local Government Act that ensure that the Greens endorsed candidates will be as independ-

ent as any other elected councillors, assessing issues on their merits, deciding matters impartially and setting directions for a better council.

I am supported by the Greens for this election because of shared values in openness, community and environment and I have declared my support because I believe in transparency, something that is sadly missing from local council.

Short changed I was under the impression that the federal government required banks to provide interest rates on deeming accounts for age pensioners at similar rates to the deeming rates applied by Centrelink, but that appears to have been discontinued without any fanfare.

Westpac recently changed the name of its account for pensioners from Deeming Account to 55+ and Retired but failed to tell the account holders that they also reduced interest rates to well below Centrelink deeming rates. Their maximum rate on this account is now 2.25 per cent.

The other side of the story is that the government is still holding deeming rates for couples at 1.75 per cent for the first $81,600 and 3.25 per cent for all savings in excess of that.

In other words, our pensioner-bashing government is quietly continuing to use figures for earning rates that are unattainable. For partially self-funded retirees this is a disaster and another example of how our coalition government sees taking money from the least able to pay as the best way to balance the budget. The money they take from the age pensioners will obviously help finance the $46 billion in tax cuts they are going to give to big business.

The Labor Party doesn’t seem to have done much to oppose this either, but at least they are on the right track in seeking to have a royal commission into the banks.

LETTERS How Cr Pittock can suggest he is not aware of the concerns of residents when submissions have been made to council by numerous residents over the past few months is astonishing. Does he have his head in the sand? [Builder] Kane has been fined at least once for a breach and residents have communicated formally with council officers on numerous occasions in relation to breaches. At times this has necessitated going to the CEO in order to get a response from the relevant council officer.

If councillors are not aware then there is a failure of process within council.

As to Brad Van Cuylenberg’s comment in relation to regular stakeholder meetings to keep residents updated, this is indeed true. But what is missing from his commentary is that numerous construction-related issues are raised at each and every meeting. All are discussed and “taken on board�, but none ever appear to be resolved to the satisfaction of residents.

The RACV is concerned with the amenity of only one group of stakeholders - resort guests and visitors. Those of us who live permanently in this beautiful part of the world are a mere inconvenience.

I am one who did fight the development, but only because I believe that aesthetically the build is not in keeping with the environment.

But, having lost that argument, I moved on and welcome and look forward to the benefits that the development will bring.

Sympathy misdirected Malcolm Turnbull’s behaviour on refugee and immigration is getting ever weirder. One has to congratulate him that he committed Australia to take more refugees from refugee camps. But to take people from Costa Rica and still ignore the human catastrophe in our concentration camps on Nauru and Manus Island is beyond believe.

If the Turnbull government is fair dinkum about stopping people drowning in oceans near Australia because they want to escape the terribly hopeless conditions in refugee camps around Asia, wouldn’t it be much better to increase the intake of refugees from camps in Indonesia,

Thailand, Malaysia? This sorry saga seems to confirm my suspicions that the crocodile tears about the drowning refugees are just that.

Australia and regional powers need to get together and solve the terrible plight of refugees in our region. We don’t need to deflect our attention to the other side of the world just to ingratiate ourselves with the Americans or the rest of the world. This will not gloss over our appalling treatment of refugees in our care.

Need for Nuisance What a revelation in the “100 years ago this week� feature (The News 20/9/16), there was then an Inspector of Nuisances. Why has this position been dropped? It should be first priority when the new council is elected.

To read that Cr Dixon is quoted as commenting that the tennis club refusal to give up the land was â€œâ€Ś the most selfish behaviour we’ve witnessed by a community group since the council term began in 2012â€?, well, I almost snorted my coffee. (OK, in the interest of full disclosure, I did snort my coffee).

Costly footpath My wife and I were one of 87 per cent of property owners on Coppin Rd, Sorrento, who petitioned the Mornington Peninsula Council not to proceed with an unwanted and poorly designed footpath project. Our petition fell on deaf ears at council and we have just lost an expensive appeal to VCAT - costly for all ratepayers.

Our local councillors have completely disregarded our repeated pleas to represent what is clearly the view of a majority of ratepayers.

At the forthcoming council elections it is time that all ratepayers across the shire ensure they only vote for councillors who will truly represent

their views. If you have any doubt about your incumbent councillor’s view on footpath projects, do not vote for them.

Please consider Just because someone has lived in an area for yonks wakes up one day and finds retirement boring, and the other significant person in that relationship doesn’t want unnecessary domestic space being occupied all day, doesn’t qualify you for representing thousands of unknown residents, some of who you might call neighbour.

A commitment to stand up and fight for local issues over a respectable period of time is a pretty good indicator of a sincere and worthy citizen.

Blow-ins from the city, unfulfilled careerists, single issue newbies, long term fence sitters and absentee public officials, don’t impress the majority of ratepayers and residents.

A willingness to listen, learn and respond to the inevitable complaints of unrepaired roads, dangerous intersections, noisy neighbours, parking infringements, wilful damage, climbing rates and council charges, fencing disputes, statutory planning issues, bushfire awareness, illegal dumping and so on. If you haven’t had experience in these fairly common community issues, what skills and experience do you really have to offer?

The Mornington Peninsula Ratepayers’ & Residents’ Association often has to involve itself on behalf of local people when recourse to their local ward councillor has been unsatisfactory.

Rate capping has been achieved by such organisations working away in the background and long hours have been expended for no financial reward except for the knowledge that if they didn’t do it, the councils would get away with continuous rate hikes.

Voters should closely look at the half or dozen candidates for the plum Briars ward and judge for themselves who has earned the right through community work in the Mt Eliza, Mornington and Mt Martha to represent them.

100 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK...

Tragic drowning of 11-year-old boy Compiled by Melissa Walsh ON Saturday, at 6.30pm, Henry Woodward, about 11 years of age, was drowned at Carrum, and Mr C. Gill, the local dairyman, had a narrow escape from a similar fate. The boy, wanting to see the flood, had persuaded Mr Gill to take him with him in his cart on the way to Well’s road.

To reach his destination he had to drive through the flooded portion.

Suddenly the horse was carried off its feet, the cart went under, and both man and boy were swept into the water. Gill got the boy on his back and made a desperate effort to save him but while endeavoring to get to a shallower spot the boy was swept away again and drowned.

The horse was also drowned, and with the cart disappeared. Neighbors have been out in boats searching for the boy’s body, but at a late hour on Sunday it had not been recovered.

Several families have been taken in boats from their homes to a place of safety. *** MESSRS A. Baily, in writing to the London office of the Melbourne “Herald” says, “They were just wonderful,” he declares. “They did the bravest things on the battleground.

There was one little chap—Corporal Bates—working all the time at fixing the wounded up with field dressings, with only a sand bag between him and the Germans, and he did the business as coolly as if he were watching Carlton and Fitzroy on a Saturday afternoon.”

Corporal Bates mentioned above is the son of Mr A. E. Bates, of Mornington formerly resident of Frankston.

“Bobby” Bates, as he was familiarly called, was one of the best of Frankston’s footballers, and was a general favorite with all. His many friends will be pleased to hear of him as still going strong. *** THE “Wattle Club” dance, in aid of Christmas boxes for the soldiers, was not as well attended as was expected, owing undoubtedly to the extremely wet night, but those who did brave the elements were amply rewarded, spending a very pleasant evening, dancing to good music supplied by Miss Daniels, of Melbourne.

The sum of £5 was raised by the effort, which will go towards providing some small amount of cheer for somebody’s brothers, who are so badly in need of a little encouragement from their own Australia.

A tray cloth, made, and presented by Miss Spillane, and a beautiful cake, presented by Mr Marks, were raffled during the evening and were the means of swelling the fund to a great extent.

The cloth was won by Mr Grice,

and the cake by Mr Heselman. During the evening Miss Gray (the late secretary of the club) was presented with a handsome case of afternoon tea spoons and cake forks, on the eve of her marriage.

Mr Lidgerwood, in making the presentation, referred to the excellent work Miss Gray had done for the club and her untiring efforts to bring it to the flourishing state it was now in.

He expressed the feelings of all present in wishing Miss Gray all the good luck that could come her way. Mr C Paynter briefly responded on Miss Gray’s behalf. Supper was partaken of, and dancing renewed with fresh vigor till 1 o’clock. *** THE “Wattles “ Club. will hold a dance this (Saturday) evening in the Frankston Mechanics’ Institute in aid of the local Red Cross Society.

First class music will be provided, and a most enjoyable evening is guaranteed. The hot water kettle donated

By Toe Punt IT was six premierships in seven years for Frankston YCW last Sunday.

What an unbelievable achievement from a lot of dedicated off-field people and a committed on-field group.

Question now is, will this continue?

A competition-wide salary cap of $150,000 per year is expected to effect the Stonecats.

How do they keep the list together?

Do the players take a significant pay cut to stay together?

Or, as some would have you believe, after so many flags, now is the time to explore other opportunities.

With absolute respect to Frankston YCW (they absolutely deserve to have achieved the success they have!), this would be the best thing for the Peninsula competition.

There is daylight between the Stonecats and the rest of the competition and players leaving is the only way to even things up.

The Player Points System doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t allow clubs to go out and recruit to catch-up.

So, as we approach the mad â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;offseasonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; period, what can you expect from your club as they prepare for 2017.

Frankston YCW: The Stonecats need to appoint a coach and appoint one quickly. Opposition clubs are circling the Stonecats and a new coach needs to reel them in quickly. YCW historically have appointed within, however, now might be the time to look outside, to bring some freshness to the list. The key for this club and the new coach is simply to hang onto the 2016 list and improve relationships with others pushing for selection. BJ Credlin needs to go on The Recruit in 2017!

Mt Eliza: Mt Eliza looked unbackable at half time in the grand final last

As good as the Mounties were, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still a gap. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll all be better for the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;learningâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; year of 2016. There were 46 players who played senior footy this season for Mt Eliza. The reserves and Under 19s won their third straight flag.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s absolutely no reason to think that they wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be there on the final day again.

Pines: The first thing the Pythons needed to do was lock away Aaron Edwards â&#x20AC;&#x201C; they did that last week. Tim

Bongetti has committed. Pines just needs to add some depth to their line up and a few recruits in the off-season will assist with that. Pines is also keen on getting hold of 19 and 20 year-olds, like Brad Kiely, so theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be active in that space.

Bonbeach: The Sharks were considered a bit of a smoky coming into this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s finals but let themselves down.

They took a while to get going in 2016 (lost first four games) and really never played their best footy consistently.

Consistency is the key, as is adding a

couple of recruits to the list and keeping Shane McDonald.

Edithvale: The Eagles have already got back Brent Bowden and Matty Clark and are hopeful of getting back Brad Tagg, which would be a formality you would expect. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s some exciting kids coming through who got a taste of it late and in a final. There are some powerbrokers looking after recruiting, so expect them to land a few.

Seaford: The Tigers improved rapidly under the guidance of Ben Mur-

phy in 2016 and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll take another step again. The club is young and Murphy would have learnt a lot about his group and the competition. The Tigers have already picked up goal kicking midfielder Damien Rayson, who has played VFL. Expect more recruits to follow.

Mornington: The Doggies were the disappointment of 2016. A soft preseason cost the Dogs at the beginning of the year and they came storming home late. Their top-end talent is as good as any and they have some great kids who were exposed to senior footy this year. With a strong pre-season, the Dogs will be the big mover.

Karingal: The Bulls have landed a new coach in former VFL assistant Andrew Sharp. The red and white are hopeful of some Dolphinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; recruits on the back of that appointment. Leigh Poholke has left, as has ruckman Grant Goodall. Grant leaves a big hole. Luke Van Ran Raay and Michael Burke will go around again. The kids will take another step. Recruits is the key for the Bulls, as is a clear and concise game style.

Langwarrin: The Kangaroos did a lot better in 2016 than anyone outside of the club expected. Some kids got an opportunity and rose to the challenge and thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s plenty to work with.

The club is likely to continue on the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;youthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; path. Ideally, they could do with a key forward and backman and a couple of midfielders with silky foot skills.

Chelsea: The Seagulls are stable, both on and off the field. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a while since that has been the case.

Brett Dunne and his coaches have all been reappointed, the majority of the list has resigned and the off-field group is united. The Gulls just need a big pre-season and a couple of recruits and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be a whole lot more competitive for longer in 2017.

Blues to set benchmark in 2017 NEPEAN LEAGUE

By Toe Punt THE 2016 Nepean Division season may have come to a conclusion with Hastings winning the flag, however, the silly season is about to begin as teams prepare to challenge in 2017.

For footy clubs, the season never finishes â&#x20AC;&#x201C; one season just rolls into another.

Whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to take us to the next level?

Where did we fall short?

These are the questions that coaching groups and committees discuss at the conclusion of every season. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the catalyst for hundreds of phone calls being made between now and the first bounce of 2017.

So what would be the plans of your club in the off-season?

Hastings: Success breeds success!

The Blues have already landed former VFL player Ricky Ferraro and the hot word is that there are others to follow, although the club is keeping its cards close to its chest. The Blues got their mojo six weeks out from finals and I can only see them improving as a group. I doubt very much theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll lose

anyone and there will be no premiership hangover.

Frankston: The Bombers know they werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t far away. Ryan Kitchen needs to get himself super fit. He had a big reputation coming in but finished the third or fourth ranked ruckman in the comp. He will make a significant difference if he can get himself right.

Mitch Bosward and Jay Reynolds have been linked all season. A tougher draw in 2017 will make them a better and more hardened team.

Rosebud: The Buds are looking for their third coach in as many years. Nick Jewell wanted a commitment from the club in 2015 and didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get one, so he committed to a club (Sorrento) that wanted to invest in him. 2016 coach Michael Kraska lost the support of the playing group and it was unworkable moving forward. The Buds need to get this right for 2017 and beyond. Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best for the footy club long term? It seems thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s too many agendas both on and off the field with word players are dictating who the club should and shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t interview for the top job. They simply need to find the best coach available. They missed on now

Mt Eliza coach Troy Shannon last year because they dragged their heels. The right decision needs to be made. Their list is outstanding and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll challenge again with the right coach. They need to keep Greg Bentley!

Somerville: All eyes will be on this club in the pre-season. Bevan Malloy has been appointed coach. The question is, who will stay and who will go?

Scott Simpson is on his way to WA and Luke Rowe is off to the US. What will Josh Westerman, Billy Rolfe and Tim McGennis do? What will Tim and David Hirst do? Todd Farrelly has retired. If the Eagles can keep the same list and add a couple, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re good enough to be there again.

Red Hill: The Hillmen were superb in 2016. They have already added one of the leagueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best ever, Chris Irving, who will play as a forward. They need a ruckman and another onballer to help Sean Marchetti. They might be close with a big man. The return of Paul Wintle in defence would top them off. The Hillmen will make a massive leap and challenge if they can get what they need.

Sorrento: The Sharks will be the big

movers in 2017. Myles Pitt and Leigh Poholke return up forward, Daniel Grant comes back into defence and Rob Forrest returns from a knee in the middle. Add that to a premiership Under 19 team with enormous talent with a taste of senior experience and the Sharks will be there when the whips are cracking.

Rye: The Demons will no doubt be looking to bring on some more Under 19s this season. A good crop of Under 17s are coming up and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be exposed to senior footy. Rye has also been able to hang on to the nucleus of their recruits, including Ryan Mullet and Kris Bardon. They should have a few points up their sleeve and will no doubt extend their recruitment web.

Dromana: The Tigers will be hoping to see the return of some of their stars from yesteryear â&#x20AC;&#x201C; using the great Rikki Johnston (coach) to lure them.

Their kids will hopefully get into the gym in the off-season and come back stronger. The Tigersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; best was good enough. Consistency is the key.

Devon Meadows: The Panthers will be hoping for some luck in 2017. They were hit with the injury stick in 2016

and emotionally they were rocked and knocked. There will be no excuses in 2017. They recruited well in the offseason last year and just need those players to take the field more often than not in 2017.

Crib Point: The Magpies were the big disappointment of 2016 after some heavy recruiting. With Brad Arnold now in charge and having the respect of the entire playing group, expect the Magpies to be a lot more competitive next season.

Pearcedale: The Panthers have appointed Leigh Stewart as coach for 2017. Former coach Jamie Merchan is still onboard. The key for the Dales will be hanging onto their list as opposition clubs circle during the offseason.

Tyabb: The Yabbies improved rapidly in 2017. There were a couple of big losses in there but on the whole, they were very competitive. Having former North Melbourne powerbroker Ron Joseph playing a mentor role off the field, as well as helping out, will be a significant bonus for the club, which has stability.

The season finale presented Heart with the opportunity to continue its perfect record having won every league game in State 5 South and becoming only the third senior team in the past 54 years to achieve such a feat.

Heart went into this clash with State 5 North champion RMIT as a firm favourite but the large group of travelling Heart fans soon found out that their side was in for the fight of its life.

The first good chance fell to Heart scoring machine Dave Greening but his first-time strike was straight at RMIT keeper Danny Graham.

In the 12th minute RMIT signalled its intent when strikers Will Barclay and Jol Latcham combined for the latter to hammer a low drive across the face of the Heart goal.

Barclay and Latcham ran Heart’s defence ragged at times and were constant threats.

Heart defender Blake Hicks was forced into a hurried clearance a few minutes later then Heart’s Ryan Monk failed to hold off Barclay whose turn and shot was parried by Heart custodian Sean Skelly.

But Heart hit the front in the 26th minute from a superb far post Hicks corner that found central midfielder Daniel Hodge who headed home from point-blank range.

That didn’t deter RMIT and within a minute Skelly was forced into a great one-handed save to keep Latcham at bay.

RMIT was creating the better chances and in the 36th minute Barclay’s cutback from the left of the area teed up Sam Wood who shot straight at Skelly.

Two minutes later scores were level.

A mistimed pass by Monk near the halfway line allowed RMIT to hit Heart on the break.

Skelly charged off his line and although he smothered Latcham’s first attempt he was stranded when Latcham gathered the rebound and calmly curled it over the big keeper and into the unguarded goal.

Six minutes into the second half a superb opportunistic effort from Greening on the turn forced a stunning reaction save from Graham who tipped the goalbound shot onto the post.

Monk was forced off through injury in the 62nd minute to be replaced by James Liddle in central defence but that didn’t diminish the threat posed

by RMIT’s strike force.

Twice in a minute Barclay blew chances to break the deadlock.

In the 74th minute he shot wide from the left of the area and in the 75th minute he ballooned his strike from the edge of the box.

In the 76th minute Hodge’s header forced Graham to palm the ball wide and in the 82nd minute Graham charged off his line and tripped Greening only for play to be waved on.

In the 88th minute RMIT substitute Dan Jones got clear on the right and his cutback was met by

tireless midfielder David O’Reilly whose shot was deflected for a corner.

Heart fans erupted in the 90th minute when Greening timed his run perfectly and broke through only for an assistant’s flag to force the referee to give an offside ruling.

In the 93rd minute a cross from Hicks on the left found Greening who controlled well then shot low but Graham was able to tip the ball out for a corner.

That forced the sides into two 15-minute halves of extra time and players on both sides were feeling the strain.

RMIT had reached the final by defeating State 5 West champion North Melbourne Athletic 2-1 after extra time the previous week whereas Heart strolled into the final when semi-final opponent Healesville forfeited.

Heart veterans Adam Poole and Simon O’Donnell had soldiered on in the second half of normal time but eventually O’Donnell had to go off and was replaced by Aaron Young.

In the first minute of extra time Greening wriggled clear on the left of the area.

Rather than cut the ball back to Hodge he decided to shoot from a tight angle and Graham was able to parry.

Barclay broke down the right in the 4th minute and cut the ball back for Latcham but Liddle slid in and intercepted and Heart eventually cleared.

In the 11th minute of extra time Hicks swung in a corner to the near post which was only cleared to the incoming Poole who mistimed his strike from 10 metres.

One minute into the second half of extra time Skelly smothered Barclay’s shot which rebounded off Liddle and the near post before being scrambled clear.

The final chance to settle the issue fell to Young who had been played in by Greening but couldn’t finish and the referee’s whistle signalled that penalties would separate the teams.

Heart fans grew in confidence knowing Skelly’s reputation as a shot stopper and the lanky keeper didn’t let them down.

Chris Smith took the first penalty for RMIT and Skelly sprung to his left and parried the ball wide but Hicks blew that advantage by striking the next penalty straight at Graham.

O’Reilly made no mistake and Heart midfielder Cory Osorio did likewise.

The decisive moment came when Barclay took the next penalty. He struck the ball firmly enough but again Skelly flung himself to his left and again he parried to give Heart the advantage.

It was a cruel blow for Barclay who had clearly been one of RMIT’s best and subsequent penalty conversions from Liddle, RMIT’s Michael Jones, Greening and Dan Jones gave Heart left back Beau Sharpe the opportunity to win the match.

As his firm strike hit the back of the net his teammates charged towards him from the halfway line and soon the Heart huddle included players, coaches and fans yelling and rejoicing at the end of a season that will live long in their memories.

A season the like of which we may never see again.

Spring has sprung and the fish are biting FISHING

By Paul Pingiaro WELL it’s fair to say Melbourne’s spring weather has been very typical. Four season in one day seems to be the norm at the moment, however when the weather gods shine the fishing has been quite good and the good news is it’s only going to get much better.

This time of year the majority of anglers focus on snapper. While the large schools of fish are still a few weeks away, it’s very promising to see some great early catches. Anglers fishing off the Rocks at Mt Martha, Mornington and Brighton are catching some nice fish up to 3kg, those that are on the boats are seeing some nice fish up to 5kg, best places are the shallow reefs (5-12m).

Best baits are fresh squid and pilchards. With early season fish burley is a must. For those in the boats try Mornington, Mt Eliza, St Kilda and wide off Carrum.

Mornington Boat Hire this week reports: “the squid have continued to fire, while the pinkies are slowly starting to show, Jonny managed to land a 95cm snapper! Flathead have been in good numbers and there’s a few nice whiting off Mills Beach”

In Western Port some nice snapper have been getting caught in the North end. Joes Island and Crawfish rock have all produce some lovely fish up to 7kg. Some nice gummy sharks to 15kg have also been caught here as well.

Yaringa Boat Harbour this week reported “Snapper to 6kg, gummy sharks to 10kg and squid to 2kg and a lot of size flatties in the channel. Joes’ and Tyabb bank have been the most popular locations. Those heading offshore into Bass Strait have been catching gummy and school shark to 15kg” Those that are looking to bag a few whiting should be looking toward the southern peninsula.

Rye to Sorrento has held the most fish, while there are a few nice patches of fish from Mornington to Mt Eliza they are a bit harder to find.

Squid this week have continued to be good.

Great catches have been had all through the southern peninsula and the top end of Western Port. Boats have been more productive as of late with the squid but as the weather calms down this will even out a bit more.
