NEWS DESK Work to begin on Eastern Sisters path WORK has begun on a $1.56 million coastal path and seawall at the Eastern Sister headland connecting Sullivan Bay to Camerons Bight, Sorrento. Initially the focus will be on fencing the construction site and diverting pedestrians around it, with project signs detailing the works.

Wine talk: Sommeliers on a tour of Mornington Peninsula wineries arrive at Crittendens Wines, Dromana, left, where they tasted and learned about wines from winemakers, including, above, Mike Symons, of Stonier Winery, Merricks.

The sommeliers were in Melbourne for The World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards which saw New York’s Eleven Madison Park take out the top spot. Tuesday’s tour of the peninsula started at Stonier Winery, Merricks, where the group was welcomed by Mornington Peninsula Vignerons Association CEO Cheryl Lee.

Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au TWENTY experts who buy and recommend what wines are served in some of the world’s top restaurants were last week taken on a tour of Mornington Peninsula wineries. The marketing exercise organised by Wine Australia saw two busloads

From there the sommeliers from the United Kingdom, United States, New Zealand and interstate went to Ocean Eight, Shoreham and then to the top of Arthurs Seat before having lunch at Petit Tracteur, Main Ridge. The final stop for the day was at Crittenden Wines, Dromana, where they tasted nine wines and were told about production methods and differences between vineyards where they

were made by winemakers including Rollo Crittenden (Crittendens Wines), Martin Spedding (Ten Minutes by Tractor), Kathleen Quealy (Balnarring Vineyard) and Glen Hayley (Port Phillip Estate). n See the May edition of Peninsula Essence magazine for a full report on the international and interstate sommeliers’ visit to the peninsula.

The headland is at the northern end of Camerons Bight and the southern end of Sullivan Bay. At the top of the cliff is the Collins Settlement Historic site, Victoria’s first official settlement, dating back to 1803. It includes graves, asphalt pathways, monuments and look-outs. The project will provide pedestrian access around the headland along a 270 metre seawall topped with a two metre wide crushed rock pathway. The $500,000 contribution from the developer of a five-lot subdivision of 3080 Point Nepean Rd is being used to help finance this project. A sloping face on the seawall is designed to absorb the energy of pounding waves, with the height of the pathway being laid two metres above sea level. This is to cope with storm tides and predicted future sea level rises. The works are expected to be completed by the end of September.

Easter police beat POLICE will be out in force over Easter as part of Operation Nexus. They will target Frankston and Mornington Peninsula roads while looking for drivers speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing seat belts and using mobile phones.
