Is my agent shopping the marketplace yearly to ensure that I’m receiving the best value for my premium dollars paid? Is my agent taking my budget into consideration? Is my agent taking the time to explain the ins and out of the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”) to both my employees and myself? Is my agent even checking to see if my doctors and prescriptions are still covered? Is my agent ensuring that my plan is still in compliance? Should I have a group health or individual health plan?

In today’s day in age, more account service is required by your insurance agent than ever before. If you feel that your insurance agent is not providing you with a value added service or if you do not have an agent, we invite you to call Kyle Hatch today for a complimentary consultation.

INSURANCE 101:

Insurance is Complicated, Understanding It Shouldn’t Be By Jody Robinson Photography by Diana Schmitt, Accent Portraits by Diana

They say those who can’t do, teach. But they also say that while we teach, we learn. In fact, Seneca said that. The Roman philosopher Seneca. (Not Seneca Crane from the recent Hunger Games films.) So which is true? Stephanie Frisch hails from a family of teachers. And she would have to agree with Seneca. “I’m always learning. I want to know everything there is to know.” In the world of insurance, the demand is high for those who are dedicated to teaching the consumer, rather than taking them simply as a commission.

W

hat do you really know about your insurance policies? Has anyone ever sat down and explained insurance to you in a way you really understood? Medicare. Prescription drug coverage. Covered California individual family plans. The chances are about as slim as Katniss escaping the Hunger Games alive. As the owner of Insurance 101, Stephanie is taking an industry norm and turning it on it’s head. “I come from an all-teacher family. I learned a long time ago how to properly and thoroughly inform my clients. And I believe that a personalized, caring approach is what it takes to garner trust with folks who at a OCTOBER 2016

I’ve been told that my method of explaining insurance makes it easier to understand than any other way my clients have been told before. And I’m really trying to help them, not sell them. base level, have no idea what the terms are, or what the provisions of the plans mean.” Specializing in senior needs - such as Medicare plans and prescription drug plans for South County residents, Stephanie is faced with unique situations daily. “As the demand grows for this type of service, I find that my successes lie in earning the trust of my clients. The actual business is just one factor. Caring for the whole person is the key.” Her old-school approach is unrivaled. Rarely does a broker find the time to spend one-on one with a client, let alone achieving any sort of true human interaction in the world of text messaging, multi-password online applications, and automated 800-number customer service recordings. “I keep contact information and notes from past conversations with all of my clients. When someone calls me, I see their name pop up on my phone and I greet them personally. I love helping people, and bringing a personal touch to the impersonal world of insurance is key. You can’t rush when you do what I do.” Having the knowledge and savvy to navigate the insurance world is one thing. Having the patience to wade through the headlines and get to the heart of the issues speaks to a deep desire to do right by her clients. “It’s my responsibility,” she notes. Sifting through the sludge of government issues, printed articles, and healthcare propaganda is enough to drive any American toward feeling as if the premium they are really paying is in lifeblood, not dollars. “What I provide is ‘value added’ to what customers pay in their insurance premium,” says Stephanie. “I don’t personally charge for my consulting service. I’ve been told that my method of explaining insurance makes it easier to understand than any other way my clients have been told before. And I’m really trying to help them, not sell them. I want to know everything about the products I offer to people and what is going on out there. 65 looks and acts a lot younger than it used to. They want the information that will help them be proactive about their lifestyle, and I help them find that.” Be it working, traveling, parenting, surfing, running marathons, practicing yoga, or training for the next Hunger Games - you should be informed. If you’d like to understand your options and benefits better, Stephanie’s the one to call. Question: How long have you been doing this and do you have an office? OCTOBER 2016

13

Stephanie Frisch: I have been licensed and working this business full time since May of 2006. Initially I would make house calls and meet people in a common area. Two years ago my client base and amount of prospective clients made is necessary for me to open an office in San Juan Capistrano and have people come to me. It’s worked out very well. We can spread documents out on my desk, it’s quiet without distractions and I have access to my printer and the internet which is very important these days. I do still make house calls for my Medicare clients, many times they’re housebound or just don’t get around easily. Question: Do you have set office hours? SF: No, I work by appointment only. If I don’t have appointments with clients many times I work out of home. My attitude with my career is that I’m basically working 7 days a weeks at least a few hours a day. I’d never be home if I was always working out of my office.

MEDICARE Question: We know you work a lot with Medicare beneficiaries, is there any new information they should know about? SF: Well a big change was to the Medicare Part B standard premium. For years it’s been $104.90 a month. Several months ago people that were new to Medicare or that were already on Medicare but not taking Social Security had a premium increase. The premium adjusted up to $121.80 a month. Also, many people aren’t aware that they will pay MORE than $121.80 a month if they make more than $85K a year as an individual or $170K as a married couple. That sometimes translates to sticker shock. I have a worksheet that I share with new Medicare beneficiaries so they’re not taken by surprise. Question: What choices do people have during Open Enrollment? SF: From October 15th to December 7th people with a standalone drug plan and/or a Medicare supplemental plan can shop to see what Medicare Advantage plans have to offer. This is the time for them to learn about plans that have a zero premium and include RX coverage too. If they do end up wanting to enroll in a Medicare Advantage with Prescription drug plan, they don’t need to worry about health conditions because enrollment is not subject to underwriting and is guaranteed issue (unless they have end stage renal disease). For people already on a Medicare Advantage plan, this is the time they can look at changing to another like type of plan that may be richer in

benefits and/or meet their needs better than their current plan. Or, these people may want to go back to Original Medicare and purchase a standalone drug and Medicare supplemental plan. Drug formularies (the list of covered drugs in an RX plan) can change every year, so if someone is taking a lot of medications it’s important for them to be aware of any changes that may affect their out of pocket costs. The only time to change drug plans during the year without some special circumstance is during Open Enrollment. Question: Do you still find a lot of confusion exists for people when they go onto Medicare for the first time? SF: Oh, absolutely! Those consultations generally take an hour and a half to two hours. There are so many factors to cover. Many times they or their spouse may still be working, so we need to look at the cost of their current group insurance and what it covers versus what they’ll pay for Medicare. If they’re still working and their income is high, many times it’s more expensive to go on Medicare and they should wait until they retire. We have to take into account past and current income, researching doctor participation in medical networks if they want a Medicare Advantage plan, and look at what drug plan gives them the lowest copays for the medications they’re currently taking. If I’m meeting with a husband and wife we are basically going through this whole process twice.

THE INSURANCE MARKETPLACE AND COVERED CALIFORNIA Question: You specialize in Medicare, but you also help people with their health insurance that are under 65, what advice would you give them for their Open Enrollment that starts November 1st? SF: Don’t try to figure it out on your own. I get paid by the insurance companies that I repre sent and it costs nothing to take advantage of my knowledge and experience. This is a very busy time for

me because open enrollment coincides with Medicare open enrollment, but I’m able to help most non-Medicare prospective clients by scheduling a phone appointment or two with them and enrolling them online. The deadline enrolling in a new plan for 1/1/17 coverage is 12/15/16. The deadline for changing your current plan with your existing insurance provider for 2017 is 1/31/17. Question: What do you think is the biggest change in insurance plans offered for 2017 for those who buy insurance from Covered California or directly from the insurance companies?

SF: Well, Anthem is going back to their 2015 model of an EPO vs. the Tiered PPO that they had last year. Any hospitals that were in Tier 2 may now be out of network and people won’t be able to access care in those hospitals. So for example, last year an Anthem Tiered PPO member could go to Hoag, Mission, St. Joseph and St. Jude hospitals here in Orange County and still be in-network, they just wouldn’t get as good of a negotiated rate as they did by going to a Tier 1 hospital such as Saddleback and U.C.I. In 2017, with the change back to an EPO plan structure, they have NO coverage out of network. It is much like a HMO, but they don’t need to have a referral to specialist, just like with a PPO. I’m told the network of doctors shouldn’t change any more than the normal shuffle, it’s just the hospital in network participation that is being affected.

Tuesday, October 25th 2pm Mimi’s Café

Question: So are there less choices this year than last year for people?

Saturday, November 19th 2pm Coco’s Bakery

SF: Actually as of this interview there are more. Blue Shield has decided to bring a HMO product to Orange County and Molina Healthcare is expanding their service to Orange county. I’m still waiting to see what Cigna and Healthnet PPO will do. They had very slim offerings last year and their prices were much higher than the other companies. However, they had broader networks, and for some people it’s worth it to them to be able to continue seeing their doctors.

THE ORANGE CATHOLIC FOUNDATION OFFERS AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEAVE A LASTING LEGACY

Since its first Wills and Trusts Week in the fall of 2011, the Orange Catholic Foundation (OCF) has had as one of its primary goals to encourage everyone to have an estate plan designed to provide for the needs of their families.

E

ach year in the spring and fall, the OCF works in collaboration with parishes and schools throughout the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange to provide information sessions led by local Catholic estate planning attorneys and financial advisors to help you protect and provide for your loved ones, update or create your estate plan, and learn more about wills, trusts, estate taxes, probate expenses, guardianship of minor children, selection of personal representatives, and more. For convenience, the Foundation offers a series of morning and evening seminars that are scheduled at local parishes across the diocese. While learning how to effectively plan a legacy, attendees at these sessions receive answers to such questions as: • Who will make my healthcare decisions if I am no longer able to act on my own behalf? • Who will have the power to manage our finances if we are no longer able to manage our property or financial affairs? • What is the difference between a will and a trust? • What happens if I pass away without an updated estate plan? • What are the advantages of pre-planning for my funeral expenses? • How can we leave a legacy of faith? OCTOBER 2016

18

• Who should we appoint as our trustees and successor trustees? • Who will be the guardian of my dependent children or child with special needs if something happens to me? The Orange Catholic Foundation warmly welcomes all who are interested in attending one of the upcoming sessions during the week of October 17 through 26. Times and locations for the fall Wills and Trusts Week are listed in their advertisement in this issue of Sorbet. Everyone who attends and completes a basic introductory form will receive a complimentary consultation with both an estate planning attorney and a financial planner within the next six months. The Orange Catholic Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable corporation and an autonomous pious foundation that exists to serve the Diocese of Orange, including its parishes, schools and overall diocesan mission. The OCF plans and conducts major diocesan fundraising programs including the Proud to be Catholic Pastoral Services Appeal (PSA), the For Christ Forever Capital Campaign, the Conference on Business & Ethics, the annual Wills and Trusts Weeks and other special fundraising events. The Foundation also manages endowments and various charitable funds and grants funds according to the donor’s intent.

7 REASONS WHY INFORMED INVESTORS CHOOSE FIDUCIARIES By Martin J. Lombrano, AIF®, LPL Financial Advisor

INDEPENDENCE

WHEN GIVING ADVICE, YOUR FIDUCIARY WORKS SOLELY FOR YOU.

Working as your fiduciary, your advisor is obligated not to engage in any self-dealing or other conflicts of interest. In fulfilling his or her obligations and duties to you, your fiduciary should perform required due diligence prior to making recommendations. Thus, acting in a proactive manner on your behalf.

2

EDUCATION

YOUR FIDUCIARY FOLLOWS A DUTY OF CARE.

Your fiduciary works for you, educating you on the different aspects of your financial plan and ensuring your understanding of how all the pieces fit together to create a sound plan. Your fiduciary promotes additional confidence in your financial future. By keeping you informed of new recommendations, the impact of those recommendations, as well as disclosing all important information associated with those recommendations, a fiduciary helps remove unwanted surprises.

3

COMPETENCE

FIDUCIARIES ARE HELD TO HIGH STANDARDS WHEN MAKING RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PRODUCTS AND SERVICES.

In addition, prudent fiduciaries will often leverage subject matter experts by tapping an entire industry of knowledge, not just the offerings of one company. This seeks to ensure you receive advice and recommendations.

4

INTEGRITY

YOUR FIDUCIARY SHOULD PLACE YOUR NEEDS AND OBJECTIVES AT THE FOREFRONT OF ALL PLANNING DECISIONS.

The financial services industry is plagued with highcommission products, company incentives and production contests. Your fiduciary is obligated to provide honest advice, based solely on your situation, and not to be swayed by outside pressures. OCTOBER 2016

5

COMMUNICATION

6

CONFIDENCE

YOUR FIDUCIARY KEEPS YOU INFORMED.

Keeping you informed, as well as disclosing all important information associated with recommendations, helps minimize unwanted surprises, and helps to create the foundation for a healthy collaborative relationship.

(714) 342-0431

1

Even the most ethical advisors are faced with the dilemma of balancing recommendations that meet your needs, while also being paid appropriately. If your advisor works for another company, he or she may not have the option of recommending the most appropriate product for your situation. Instead, advisors may only be able to offer the products of the company they work for.

20

COMPETENT FIDUCIARIES CAN IMPART GREATER CONFIDENCE!

However, imparting confidence is not enough to establish the fiduciary role. Only when that confidence is accepted by the client, is the fiduciary relationship established, causing dependence by the client and influence by the advisor. Knowing that you have a fiduciary working for you should help provide confidence.

7

TRUST

YOUR FIDUCIARY’S DUTY TO YOU IS A HIGHLY SCRUTINIZED RELATIONSHIP IN THIS INDUSTRY.

Trust, once earned, is one of the highest honor any advisor can receive from a client. One of an advisor’s biggest challenges is telling his or her client what they need to hear... especially when the client does not want to hear it. Your fiduciary is committed to a code of ethics and has an obligation to give you straight answers, providing a strong foundation upon which to build trust. Martin J. "IRS problems generally affect all aspects of your life,” says Edward Daoud, Ph.D., MBA., EA. An expert who would give them the peace of mind they and their family deserve so they can stop looking over their shoulder once and for all, knowing that they no longer need to meet or communicate with the IRS. Too often, individuals attempt to handle their IRS situation themselves (or with their current CPA or the person who prepared their taxes), but don’t receive the relief they are seeking.

South OC Real Estate Spotlight Sheri Normandin of Berkshire Hathaway By Jody Robinson

A

ccording to a recent LA Times article, “the Southern California housing market is red-hot again.” 2015 was the second-busiest year since the 2008 recession, and experts are calling for 2016 to be the year that the peak returns to Orange County. With so much hype in the forecast, it can be difficult for both buyers and sellers to track market trends, sift through all the numbers, and forecast what may or may not happen over years to come. I know I’d rather choose a new paint color or build my dream wraparound porch than pore tediously over CoreLogic statistics. And that’s where Sheri Normandin comes into the picture. Often, determining the difference between one’s skill set and one’s passion leaves much to be desired: a rift not many of us have the luxury to cross over in our professional lives. For Sheri, seeing her skill set and passion collide in the real estate market has revolutionized hers. With over 25 years of executive level management and marketing in over 26 countries, Sheri’s transition to luxury property management was as smooth as can be. In fact, it doesn’t get much smoother than earning herself a top 4% spot in the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Agents nationwide: and an entry in the 2014 and 2015 President’s Club. Yet, unlike a great many OC brokers, Sheri doesn’t hail from Orange County. OCTOBER 2016

24

“I grew up on a farm,” she notes with a smile. “I’m interested in Orange County in the same way my buyers and sellers are interested: I came here to buy a house for myself, I dealt with the same process, the same negotiations; and I think that makes me uniquely suited to welcome folks to the area.” With the increased global reach of real estate, understanding and appropriately providing services to meet the various needs out there are constantly added to the equation of buying or selling a home. Sheri services all of South Orange County, not just the city she resides in, and she is willing to go the extra mile to help her clients understand what it is they are really achieving with her at the helm of their housing project. “The needs of a buyer are vastly different than those of a seller,” she says. “We have seen a strong recovery over the past few years, but with low inventories, it continues to be a sellers market.” So what questions are you asking as either a buyer or seller in the current market? You may have the perfect paint chip in hand, but what kind of wall would you like to decorate? You may be approaching retirement, and are looking to downsize. Do you have specific square footage in mind?

SOUTH COUNTY MAGAZINE

Do you have a budgetary cap? Is there room for the family dog? A yard? “Floor plans and functionality of a home can vary greatly and rearranging the current use with minor changes can have a much bigger value to a buyer, if they can see it,” says Sheri. “Not all agents can provide that vision. I look for areas I can make the process easier for my clients and actively take things off their plate to reduce stress.” Because everyone’s motivations are different, a good realtor connects with clients and can manage the expectations on the table, while successfully maximizing results. Finding a broker that will offer more than a minimum level of service however, can be painstaking. With her background in marketing and negotiation, it is no wonder that Sheri has found such success - invaluable when navigating the market and its constant fluctuations.

“When I’m looking for a prospective agent to sell my home, I’m asking if they do this as a full time job - I’m asking for reviews and references - I’m asking what sets them apart from other agents. Professional photography, quality marketing materials and online exposure are base requirements these days to provide great results for the seller. I go beyond what is expected, which changes with each client. I’ve planted flowers, moved couches. Selling or buying a home can be an emotional experience, and making it as positive as possible is my goal.” For more information about Sheri Normandin of Berkshire Hathaway, please call 949-612-5884, or email Sheri4OCHomes@gmail.com. San Juan Photo & Digital & Accent Portraits by Diana

all me old fashioned, but I believe that physical photos are a medium worth preserving. When I recently sat down to put together my daughter’s baby book, I thought of how printed images might at times seem like a thing of the past. But then I can’t imagine showing off my family photos by scrolling through all the images I posted to Facebook once upon a time. Scott and Diana Schmitt, co-founders of the San Juan Capistrano-based San Juan Photo and Digital and Accents Portraits by Diana understand the desire for individuals and families to preserve their most precious memories in more than merely a digital format. Scott and his wife have long shared a love of photography. So when a then-Moto Photo franchise became available for purchase in 1989, the couple jumped at the chance to pursue their professional passion. After six years of hard work building their initial business together, they opened a second, separate studio

entity in the same shopping center to provide their clients a “one stop shop” to fulfill all facets of their clients’ photographic needs. Scott continues to oversee the operation of San Juan Photo and Digital, while Diana focuses her attention and talent to in-studio and on location professional photography at Accent Portraits by Diana. The pair initially launched their entrepreneurial endeavor with a fun and a creative outlet in mind, and the exploding photography industry and advancements in technology over the course of the subsequent two decades helped them continually evolve their business. “The industry has changed dramatically since the inception of digital photography in that people continue to take more and more pictures as photography becomes increasingly accessible,” says Scott. “But a sad byproduct of this trend is that the focus on digital photography is creating a ‘lost generation’ of people who don’t and won’t have any printed family photos.” The “Chief Historical Officers” of the home (usually the wives and mothers) comprise a large component of Scott’s clientele, women who feel strongly about preserving their family’s history and photography in physical form. Toward that end, Scott is truly your “hometown digital expert” specializing in prints from your camera and phone, photo/slide scan, photo restoration, passport photos, camera repairs, digital camera classes, film/video to DVD and photo books, posters and canvas prints and they even still process film! “We are so fortunate to have an amazing team who have been with us for so long that they are family,” says Scott. “Harvey Tarango is a master at photo manipulation and our lab manager Cheryl Wayland was with us before our children were even born – they all know her as ‘Auntie Cheryl’ and she’s been an amazing asset to our company for over 25 years.” For her part, Diana has spent the better part of 30 years specializing in family portraits, wedding photos and capturing the most priceless of moments in all types of life celebrations. “Diana is amazing,” says Heidi Hitt. “She has taken so many special pictures over the years for me and my family. They all turn out so beautifully. I am so blessed to have someone I can trust to help me capture special moments in time. Everybody loves when we send out our Christmas cards; they can’t believe how beautiful the pictures are. Thank you Diana for all the beautiful memories.” “The best part of working together is that we have been able to take a hobby that we love and turn it into a successful, long- running, thriving business in this wonderful community,” says Scott. SPOTLIGHT ON:

Synthetic LawnGrass and Professional Putting Greens by Jody Robinson

Owning your own home is a huge part of the American dream – but it’s not just owning a home ... it’s the pride of ownership that extends to the care you put into the way the property looks – inside and out.

T

he front lawn is one of the first things about your home that people see, and a tidy, lush-looking lawn not only adds to your home’s curb appeal, but also adds to the overall aesthetic appeal of your neighborhood. But “lush” might be quite a stretch to achieve with the water shortage and no end in sight to our state’s drought conditions. That is, unless you call GORILLA GRASS® –providers of the highest quality synthetic LawnGrass for both residential and commercial customers

For our part, my husband and I were tired of looking at a barren patch of dirt in our back yard and I hesitate to call what was struggling to grow there “grass.” We decided to install a synthetic lawn and called on GORILLA GRASS® owner Denis Weber and his professional team to try to make the area look better and have it be a more useable space for the kids could play. Serving Orange County since 1998, Denis has continually grown the company year after year – a testament to the quality of his product and service. GORILLA GRASS® provides two types of grass: Synthetic LawnGrass and Professional Putting Greens. Living with a water shortage in California is just par for the course (pun intended), but synthetic grass can help you cut down significantly on your water usage and judging by the results we achieved, you don’t have to sacrifice beauty for cost-savings. “Synthetic or artificial lawn grass is so sophisticated today, that is very closely imitates real live grass while saving water, which saves a serious amount of money for the home or business,” says Denis. “In general, by switching to artificial lawn, the savings in water consumption amount to about 48 gallons per square foot, per year – an outstanding figure!” When we spoke with Denis, it was immediately evident that he is extremely proud of his product, but we were equally impressed by personal testimonials of his many happy customers. “Denis was by far the most professional, friendly, and informative,” says Ken Lee, who met with four different artificial lawn vendors before choosing

GORILLA GRASS®. “The installation went without a hitch, despite the fact that I made some design changes prior to install. Denis and his lead installer, Roman, were outstanding and a pleasure to work with.” According to Denis, the ways in which GORILLA GRASS® simulates real grass are numerous: “its weight (double the average at 143 oz per square yard), its high density, its extra softness and plushness, its resiliency, its height (2” - 2 1/4”, whereas most lawns are 1 1/2” to 1 3/4”)”, and its special diamond-shaped fibers - which help make Gorilla Grass more resilient and more realistic. GORILLA GRASS® is just like real grass, only better. Denis’ golfing green material - MIRAGE PUTTING GREENS® - is also available for avid golf enthusiasts who want to set up a practice green at home. “The MIRAGE PUTTING GREENS® is 100% lead-free, heavy, dense, and is a nylon green that gives a ‘PGA-like feel’ every time,” says Denis. Denis is incredibly grateful to his staff, in particular one very “gifted visionary” who works tirelessly to develop new and existing products. He calls this inventor the “Steve Jobs of our industry” and credits him with the high quality of their MIRAGE PUTTING GREENS® and GORILLA GRASS® which Denis proudly says are the “two finest products available anywhere in their respective categories.” As of July 2016, GORILLA GRASS® introduces a new, long-awaited technically sophisticated artificial LawnGrass that has been described as a close simulation of “real sod,” a product that has been sought after by industry-knowledgable residential and commercial customers alike.

Are You Looking for a Medicare Approved Treatment for Sleep Apnea? By Scott E. West, DDS

Are you experiencing Daytime Tiredness, Morning Headaches, Mood Changes or Depression? Do you Snore? These symptoms are indicators of Sleep Apnea.

W

hen you share these symptoms with your physician he most likely will schedule a Sleep Study for you. Your doctor knows that patients with Sleep Apnea have a high potential of developing Heart Disease, Diabetes, Dementia, and Stroke. Why does Sleep Apnea cause so many medical problems? Essentially, Sleep Apnea deprives you of oxygen. Oxygen deprivation puts pressure on your cardiovascular system. This may lead to Diabetes, or Stroke. Deprivation of oxygen to the brain can also lead to Dementia, Depression, and obviously Tiredness. A Sleep Study allows your Doctor to assess the severity of your situation. As we age, the risk for developing Sleep Apnea gets higher. And, why is this? Most of us gain weight as we age. Do you weigh the same as you did at 21? This increased weight tends to close off the airway while sleeping, thus depriving your body of oxygen. Also, as we age, tissues collapse; this again tends to close off the airway. An expression I like to use is “Gravity Sucks.” The recommended treatment for Sleep Apnea is the CPAP mask. CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Air Pressure. Air pressure generated by the CPAP keeps the airway open and therefore avoids the negatives of oxygen deprivation. However, I see many seniors who find the CPAP mask too difficult to wear. Despite knowing it’s benefits, I’ll frequently hear from patients, “I just can’t wear it. I know it will help me, but I can’t do it.” That’s where I come in! I am a Diplomate of the Academy of Clinical Sleep Disorder Disciplines. I have worked closely with most of the Sleep Centers and Doctors in Orange County and they have witnessed my high success rate. With over 10 years experience is this field, I have developed a system to determine which dental appliance holds the best odds of successfully treating your Sleep Apnea. OCTOBER 2016

My practice website is www.CannotUseCPAP.com. There you will learn why the first alternative for treating Sleep Apnea is an Oral Appliance - something similar to a dental retainer that is worn on your teeth while sleeping to prevent Sleep Apnea. If you have symptoms of Heart Disease, Morning Headaches, Snoring, Tiredness, or Depression, you should schedule an appointment with your physician regarding Sleep Apnea. If you have already been diagnosed with Sleep Apnea, and cannot wear the CPAP, call my office today to schedule a FREE CONSULTATION. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain – including a good night’s sleep and better health. My staff can answer any questions you may have regarding Oral Appliance Therapy, schedule your free consultation, and review the use of Medicare or other Insurances.

Some people are born great; some people create their own greatness. For Victoria Vannini, creating with hair and giving her clients a style that reflects their personality and ‘true self ’ is more than just a “cut and color.”

“It begins with the consultation,” says Victoria. “I want to know about your lifestyle and career. [About] the hair products and tools you use. This is essential in evaluating the condition and texture of your hair and helps us to come to a place that is realistic - at the beginning and where we want to go for the future.” Education is an important element to Victoria’s career. After graduating from cosmetology school, Victoria continued at the Vidal Sassoon Academy in Los Angeles. While apprenticing at the Carlton Hair Salon at Crystal Court for one year, she honed her skills with creative color and hair cutting. From there, she went on to be an educator for Paul Mitchell. She currently takes classes at the Unite Academy in Carlsbad. “I want to stay current with color trends, foil placement, CONTACT new haircutting techniques VICTORIA VANNINI and strategies,” says Victoria, who sees her education as a hair stylist as ongoing. “The inHoward Jones Salon dustry is currently on the cusp 32545 Golden Lantern of using ammonia-free color. With over 12 years of experience with innovative color, corrective color and highlights, lowlights and glazing, Victoria is an award-winning colorist who prides herself in helping her clients "recharge" their hair with vibrant, pure color and luscious shine - all the beautiful hues with none of the harmful ingredients.“I've seen to many clients come in with over processed hair, in need of an 'In Salon' protein treatment to restore their damaged hair." “Every hairstyle has to be approached differently and requires thought. Just because a style works for Jennifer Aniston doesn’t mean it will work for every client’s hair texture and facial structure. Everyone is unique and it’s important to take the time to feel the hair to see how it moves, determine the best, most complementary hues and utilize top-of-the-line products that will enhance and strengthen the hair without any of the damaging ingredients."

FALL SPECIAL!!!

Victoria is fabulous!! I moved to Orange County 1O years ago forcing me to find a new hair stylist, and had several horrible experiences. I decided my mission was to look at the hair style of each person I encountered. I found that perfect hairstyle and I asked her who did her hair and she gave me Victoria's name and salon. Now, I have people ask ME all the time who does my hair, and have even had people ask to take my picture so they could show their out of town stylist! She truly cares about her clients and puts all her efforts and skill to work to create the perfect style. I always look forward to seeing Vic and leaving the salon with a huge smile on my face and feeling great! OCTOBER 2016

“Observation Care” can be Costly

First off, this only pertains to you if you have Original Medicare only. Hospitals provide observation care for patients who are not well enough to go home but not sick enough to be admitted and is considered an outpatient service. The observation designation means they can have higher out-of-pocket expenses and fewer Medicare benefits. Because observation care is provided on an outpatient basis, patients usually also have co-payments for doctors’ fees and each hospital service, and they have to pay whatever the hospital charges for any routine drugs the hospital provides that they take at home for chronic conditions such as diabetes or high cholesterol. Observation patients cannot receive Medicare coverage for follow-up care in a nursing home, even though their doctors recommend it. To be eligible for nursing home coverage, they must have first spent at least three consecutive days “admitted” in a hospital. (Not on observation) Why is this happening more? Well, Medicare has strict criteria for admissions as an inpatient and won’t pay anything for admitted patients who should have been in observation care. In response to stepped up enforcement of these rules, hospitals have been placing more patients in observation. Want to know away to avoid this costly headache? Meet with me to learn about your options for a Medicare Advantage plan. OCTOBER 2016

the issue of hair loss for the first time. Our goal is to help you find the solution that works best for you and do so in a caring way that makes you realize that you are not alone.” There are wonderful testimonials from longtime customers on her web site (missionviejowigs. com), but for me, the best testament to Betty’s genuine, caring nature came from a source closer to home. When my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer six years ago, there were so many aspects of what she was facing - including the side effects associated wit chemotherapy treatment – that were out of our control. But my mother’s appearance was something she felt she could dictate. We knew she would lose her hair, but she was determined not to “look like a sick person.” From the moment my mother met Betty, she knew she had found the right place and more importantly, the right person to help her. But rather in such a way that every person who has walked through Owner Betty Darroch’s doors in the 30+ years she has been in operation immediately felt like a member of Darroch’s extended family.

As a professional hair and wig stylist since 1962, Betty began her career at CBS where her résumé reads like a celebrity screenplay starring the coifs of a veritable “who’s who” of Hollywood: Ann Margaret, Carol Lawrence, the Midnight Specials and the Sonny & Cher Show. She went on to work for the Hallelujah Hollywood Show at the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas. But it wasn’t until she opened her own business in Mission Viejo that she felt as though she were “truly doing God’s work.”

Her clients today include people who are experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy treatment, alopecia or other medical conditions. Betty specializes in wigs, hairpieces and toupees for women, men and children and carries only the highest quality brands. Each wig or hairpiece is custom fit to the client for the most natural look and feel – no one will know you’re wearing a wig unless you tell them.

The wig Betty selected was the perfect color and style for my mother’s face (and head) shape. The wig was so natural looking that my mother received many compliments on her “new do” and no one was the wiser.

THE CUTTING EDGE

Finding Personal Attention and Absolute Satisfaction at AesthetiCare By Jody Robinson Last year, there were over 15.9 million aesthetic procedures performed in the United States. A 2% increase over 2014, and a staggering 115% increase since the year 2000. Liposuction, breast augmentation, facelift, tummy tuck: the list is seemingly endless. For the past 29 years, AesthetiCare has been performing cosmetic surgeries of the like- discovering, along the way, that cosmetics aren’t simply about looking your best.

“T

he face we present to the world affects our self esteem, and influences our personal and professional lives.” Though specializing in cosmetic and plastic surgery and medical spa services, AesthetiCare, in a rather stark contrast to other facilities that perform similar procedures, wants you to think carefully about your expectations. “Cosmetic surgery deals with improvement, not perfection. And it should be done to please yourself, not to meet someone else’s expectations. In fact, they’ve coined a phrase to that particular effect: “enhance your body, ease your mind.”

Ron Moser, M.D. likes to think that AesthetiCare’s favorite phrase is the key to their success- a deep rooted sense of service, and an attendance to the patient’s every need. “We do everything we can to make a positive change in patient’s lives. To help them regain the youthful image they had at a younger age, or to enhance their body or face. Customer service is the most important thing in this market. So many other physicians do not spend the time necessary to answer the patient’s questions and instill confidence in their services.” Confidence is key in a practice such as this. Licensed surgery centers, surgeons named Diplomates of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and a minimum of ten years experience in outpatient surgery for nursing staff is nothing to shake a stick at. With new procedures and devices at their highly capable fingertips, AesthetiCare has more than you need to shape a whole new outlook on life. TruSculpt, one of the newest modalities in use at AesthetiCare, uses heat sculpting technology to melt away fat and tighten loose skin. “The TruSculpt treatment can be performed almost anywhere on the body,” says Dr. Moser. “No surgery is required and a full treatment of any one area can be performed in roughly 30-40 minutes.” A breakthrough radio frequency (or RF) technology, TruSculpt delivers deep tissue heating to melt the fat and provide a reduction in cellulite. The newest way to lose inches and remove stubborn fat, the procedure follows in the footsteps of other treatments AesthetiCare offers: Laser Genesis, LimeLight Facial Skin Therapy, CoolGlide Laser Vein and Hair Removal, and Titan Laser Skin Tightening. tee: putting you back on your feet and ready to hit the ground running in 40 minutes or less. In the following interview, Dr. Moser answers frequently asked questions. Q: How can a prospective client determine if he or she is the right candidate for truSculpt? A: Your doctor will determine if treatment is right for you during a one-on-one consultation. Typically patients have a BMI less than 30 and have slight bulges in certain areas of the body. TruSculpt is also not to be used as a weight loss product. Q: Who cannot be treated with truSculpt? A: Patients who cannot be treated with truSculpt include (but are not exclusively) those who are pregnant, people who have cardiac pacemakers or internal defibrillators, those with malignant or benign tumors in the target area or those with metallic implants of any kind in the target area, including joint replacements. Q: Can truSculpt be used on all skin types? A: Yes, truSculpt can be used on all skin types I-VI on the Fitzpatrick scale. Please always consult with your doctor beforehand.

minutes; upon completion, your doctor will move the handpiece to an adjacent area to begin a next pulse. The entire treatment will last for 1 hour or less. Q: What does it feel like? A: TruSculpt is specifically designed to be a very comfortable procedure for you. As the truSculpt handpiece delivers energy you will feel that specific area heat up. Due to its unique design, the heating of the area will be quite tolerable and your doctor can adjust the temperature depending on your comfort level. Typically no pain medication, topical anesthetics, gels, or active cooling will be used or administered to you. Q: Can I return to normal activities after my treatment? Q: How long does a treatment last? A: Typically a treatment lasts 1 hour or less. Your doctor will consult with you on which areas will be treated. Your doctor or a staff member will be with you administering the treatment the entire time. Q: How many treatments will there be? A: Your doctor will consult with you on the number of treatments to deliver based on the area(s) you wish to be treated and desired results you are looking for. Typically a patient will receive 1-2 treatments and each treatment will be about 2 months apart. Q: When can I start seeing visible results? A: TruSculpt delivers RF energy and uses the body’s natural system to break down cells in certain areas. This process takes anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months and a patient may begin to see results anytime during that period and beyond. Q: How long will results last? A: Long term studies have not yet been conducted on truSculpt to determine exactly how long results can last; however we expect results to be permanent, providing the patient does not gain additional weight due to lifestyle dietary and/or exercise changes. Q: What do I need to do before a treatment? A: You do not need to do any activities or prepare in any way for a treatment. Once you are at your doctor’s office, your doctor will do some brief pre-treatment activities such as cleaning your skin, removing any makeup or lotions, taking photos/measurements, and removing any jewelry or body piercings in the treatment area. Q: What happens during the treatment? A: Your doctor or operator will identify with you the specific areas of the body to be treated. After a brief pre-treatment preparation, your doctor will be applying the truSculpt handpiece to your skin which in turn will deliver a pulse of RF energy. Each pulse will last on average 4

A: Yes you can. The procedure is a completely non-invasive technique, so typically you can return to normal activities immediately. Often times, patients return to work after the session is over. Q: Do I need to take special supplements or follow a strict diet and exercise program? A: No supplements or pills are required and you do not have to adopt new diet and exercise habits. However, many patients feel more motivated to take care of themselves after the truSculpt treatment and often use traditional diet and exercise as a complement to truSculpt. Q: Is truSculpt safe? Is it painful? Are there side effects? A: TruSculpt is uniquely designed to provide a very safe and comfortable procedure. Typically, there is no downtime after the treatment though patients may experience minor temporary pain or discomfort. Side effects can include redness, sweating, and mild tenderness in the areas that are treated. Usually this dissipates within a few hours. Your doctor can talk to you more about what to expect during and after treatment when you meet for your consultation. Q: How much does truSculpt cost? How many treatments will I need?

Controlled heat is delivered to the deep subcutaneous layer of the tissue.

While results vary by patient, results are seen as early as 4 weeks, with optimal results typically achieved at 12 weeks.

A: The price for truSculpt varies, depending on your areas of concern, the number of treatments needed and your ultimate goals. Your doctor would need to consult with you in person to help estimate the cost.

Pilates Makes you Smarter By Nicole Howard and cara Fraser

One could state, “pilates is core, as crossword puzzles are to the brain.” But have you ever thought about “pilates is to the brain” instead?

S

urprisingly, Pilates goes beyond a good muscle burn and reaches into the neurons of the brain, and science is proving this to be true. By emphasizes precision, concentration, and memorization of patterns, scientists proved this leads to enhanced brain function just as much as body function. The mental power of Pilates starts at the heart of the method’s own principles. During a quality Pilates session, one is applying these principals to produces mindful movement that purposely leads to an allencompassing workout, not only for the body but for the brain too.

The principles are• AWARENESS/CONTROL- knowing exactly where the body is in space at all times. • CONCENTRATION- having complete mental focus on the body, and being fully present to that action. • BREATH- coordinating your breath to movement. Each movement of an exercise is timed with exhale or inhale. • FLOW- threading movements together so the body is in constant motion with full control. • PRECISION- every movement and position has a goal and purpose; execution needs to be precise so that goal is met. • CENTERING- movements start at the core of the body, relying on and creating proper body alignment.

Putting all of theses principles together produces a mind-body connection that goes beyond just a typical workout. Hence why there have been many recant studies to find out the benefits for the brain while doing mindful movement like Pilates. In a recent case, participants did Pilates for ten weeks while studying their brain’s activity. The results showed an increase of what is called Alpha Peak Power in the brain. Alpha Peak Power is found to enhance neural network activity, memory performance and cognitive functions. These findings suggest that Pilates is a valuable intervention for people with brain degenerative disease and cognitive dysfunction. Plus helps produce positive affects in learning, memory, and thinking. Through the principles of Pilates, mindfulness is at the heart of the method. With science proving cognitive benefits do lie within mindful movement, you can now relish in the fact that at your next Pilates session you are not only stronger, but a whole lot smarter too.

Seeking Suspense! By Beverly Blake and Tom Scott

Y

our heart is pounding, your hands are clenched, and terror permeates your very being. You are scared to death, petrified to look at the screen, read any further or continue to watch the actors on stage - but it does not get any better than this! Do some people get an endorphin high from being scared? Yes, some researchers do believe that the typical physical reaction to suspenseful movies, books or plays results in the release of opiate endorphins. Addiction to suspense is tied up in biology. That is, the story revs up the body’s sympathetic nervous system, inducing stress and anxiety. In some, the stress is a welcome thrill even if it makes you scream. Speaking of screaming did you know that the term bloodcurdling dates back centuries to medieval times. Recent studies show that extreme horror scenes from plays, books and movies often increase a blood clotting factor in humans! This may be in preparation to stop bleeding in a real crisis.

The payoff comes when the story is over. We are flooded with a sense of relief, which makes us feel good and safe once again. Perhaps we are all just looking for the same thing—a periodic jolt to the nervous system and a roundabout peek at our innermost fears, all within the comfort of a secure environment. To quote Neil Gaiman as to why we love a good ghost story: “Fear is a wonderful thing, in small doses. You ride the ghost train into the darkness, knowing that eventually the doors will open and you will step out into the daylight once again. It’s always reassuring to know that you’re still here, still safe. That nothing strange has happened, not really. It’s good to be a child again, for a little while, and to fear — not governments, not regulations, not infidelities or accountants or distant wars, but ghosts and such things that don’t exist, and even if they do, can do nothing to hurt us.” Prepare for an endorphin high, get ready for blood curdling screams and keep an aspirin handy to ensure your blood keeps flowing when you come to the Playhouse this October.
