IMMIGRATION LEGAL SERVICES

South Bronx United is recognized by the Office of Legal Access Programs (OLAP) at the United States Department of Justice. This allows designated staff to practice immigration law and represent youth, families, and the community in proceedings before Immigration Court and the United States Citizenship and Immgration Services (USCIS). SBU’s Immigration Services Program Manager, a DOJ accredited representative, assesses the needs and eligibility of youth and their family members, manages immigration relief cases, provides legal services and referrals, and offers information to community members on relevant immigration issues. These steps are crucial to improving the lives of many youth and families and to helping youth on the path towards college and careers. South Bronx United has supported youth and families in gaining work authorization, legal permanent residency, asylum, and citizenship, with a particular focus on cases for undocumented youth who are eligible for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Staff also organizes Know Your Rights sessions and immigration clinics for youth and parents. SBU is a member of the Bronx Immigration Partnership and the New York Immigration Coalition.

“At South Bronx United, they care for you, for family members, and their main focus is on how to make the community in the south Bronx better not only for the kids but for the parents. In my case, SBU offered me their legal services. My status had been complicated since I came over the border into the United States as a child. But thanks to SBU, I became a legal permanent resident of the United States in 2015. When I graduated High school, this gave me the opportunity to attend college and live my dream. I am the first in my family to attend college, something I used to think would not be possible. In my first year of college, I became a US citizen and now I am able to work anywhere I want with no problem. I am extremely grateful for every single blessing that has happened to me ever since I joined this extraordinary club.”

“I knew that I wanted to become a citizen, but I hadn’t decided exactly when or how I would do that. When the opportunity came to have SBU help, I said, yeah, I’m going to do it. I was nervous the whole time, but I got through it. Truly, it is a very good service; and, because it’s free, it’s accessible to those who have few resources... I’m so grateful—so grateful, because I was always thinking, when am I going to do this? When? I’m going to have to pay. I’m going to have to do this and that and run in circles. But, all I had to do was go to the SBU office, and they helped with everything. It was a great opportunity, and I am so grateful to SBU.”

“With everything going on the world, I sometimes feel lost or alone. And, it’s when I look up and see that my family is there that I know where I belong. And, that’s what it means to me to find family at SBU, to find people who always support me and make me feel like I belong.”
