HELLO

"A cloudless plain blue sky is like a flowerless garden." —Terri Guillemets

Baths of the Year winners, pages 18 – 30.

Surrounded by bath luxuries at Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. Photography by Colin Miller/Strauss Peyton.

he afternoon started off with a beautiful, blue sky and fluffy white clouds. Rain was forecasted for late afternoon but that seemed highly unlikely. The sun was shining brightly when it started to rain. Within an hour, the picturesque sky turned into a kaleidoscope of infinite shades of blue. Some of the fluffy white clouds morphed into a dark, breathtaking blue, while others turned gray. Magically a feeling of serenity and well being filled the air about the same time the sky opened and showered us with an hour-long downpour. Oh, what a relief that was! We needed that rain in more ways than one. For your own slice of tranquility, if you can't sit on a front or back porch during a summer rain, the next best thing is to pamper yourself with a luxurious bath experience. Natural sunlight, functionality, sleekness, cabinetry styles, cohesiveness and smart design are all the hallmarks of this year's award-winning bath designs. And the color white once again reigns as king. White, blue and some fabulous views make our judges' picks truly exceptional. St. Louis Homes + Lifestyles is pleased to share this year’s talented Baths of the Year winners on pages 18 – 30. I would be remiss if I didn't mention I met Martha Stewart at her lecture and book signing last month at the Saint Louis Art Museum. She was sharing insightful gardening tips along side her floral designer, Kevin Sharkey. They make a great team. She grows all the amazing flowers that Kevin arranges. “Martha's Flowers: A Practical Guide to Growing, Gathering, and Enjoying” showcases gorgeous images of her favorite flowers and how to grow them, plus Kevin’s floral design tips from the basics to advanced floral design. The best part of the event was the book signing. As the one and only Martha Stewart signed my newly purchased book, I presented her with a gift… the June/July issue of St. Louis Homes + Lifestyles! She did a double take. A floral arrangement by Meg Huber of Garden Party & David graced our cover. "Very nice cover," she quipped as she quickly thumbed through the magazine adding, "and very nice photography and layout too. I'll read this tonight". Yes...very nice indeed! I floated out of the Art Museum on my very own cloud that day. Suzie Osterloh Publisher/Owner

STYLE MAKER

designing a DREAM BATH Ashleigh Schroeder, designer at National Kitchen and Bath, defines good bathroom design. Ashleigh has worked at National Kitchen and Bath since 2005. She is a member of the National Kitchen & Bath Association and is AKBD and NCIDQ certified. Edited by Melissa Mauzy Photography by Colin Miller/Strauss Peyton

SLHL: What defines good design in a bathroom? Ashleigh: A good bathroom design should be both stylish and functional. There is no need to sacrifice one for the other. Materials should have balance and show personality with a special feature of some kind like a special mosaic tile accent or fun wall color. SLHL: With the trend of replacing tubs with a larger shower, is it necessary to have a tub in at least one bath for resale value? Ashleigh: There should definitely be at least one tub in the home for resale purposes. If there is no tub then a couple with young children would not have a place to bathe their children and would probably not have interest in the house. SLHL: What products would you recommend to easily increase the functionality of your bath? Ashleigh: Increased function at the vanity area comes down to storage. Medicine cabinets or towers on the countertop with outlets inside for electric razors and electric toothbrushes. A handheld showerhead is a great way to help with cleaning the shower and bathing the kids or pets. SLHL: Can you go overboard using too many hard surfaces in the space? Ashleigh: Yes. Hard-surface tile or stone is necessary in a wet area, but you can balance the hard surfaces in a bathroom with wood cabinetry, curtain panels or a shower curtain. You want your bathroom to be an inviting place, not cold and stark.

14

AUGUST 2018 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

SLHL: How much of a bath should be tiled, and how far up a wall would you recommend tile go? Ashleigh: Tile should go to a minimum of 6’ high in a shower and at least 4” behind the sink. Anything beyond that comes down to the design and style of the space. SLHL: Cleaning the bath isn't most peoples' favorite task. What can you do to minimize the amount of cleaning in a bathroom? Ashleigh: Having a large-format tile with fewer grout lines would make the shower and floor easier to clean. For vanity tops, quartz countertops are stylish, maintenance-free and a very easy-to-clean option. SLHL: How do you approach lighting in the bathroom? Ashleigh: In my opinion, too much is better than not enough. You should plan on having general lighting in the ceiling, like can lights on dimmers, and good lighting at the vanity area that comes off the wall. If your only light source at the vanity area comes from the general lighting in the ceiling then your face will be shadowed when you stand at the mirror, making shaving or applying makeup more difficult. SLHL: What are the latest trends in bathroom design? Ashleigh: The latest trend in bathroom design is for everything to be light, bright and very open. Freestanding tubs have also really made a big comeback in recent years.

ARTIST By Tyler Bierman Photography by Colin Miller/Strauss Peyton

Paul Bayer creates sculptures that inspire our imaginations.

On any given weekend at the City Museum, there's a good chance you'll spot sculptor Paul Bayer carving away on his dream project before you even walk in the door. An astounding 20 ton, 6'x6'x7'block of solid white marble, Bayer describes the piece as “probably my biggest achievement.” He continues, “It's a reminder to protect creativity for the children and the child in all of us so we can do things like creating something that's cool that we can all be a part of just like the City Museum itself.” This work-in-progress masterpiece contains all the elements that make up what the City Museum stands for. It's a beautiful mixture of many different ideologies and cultures all culminating in a sculpture that has the power to inspire creativity in children and adults alike. This has been Bayer's passion project for the last four and a half

16

AUGUST 2018 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

years, but his love for carving art started much earlier in his life and really exploded at the age of 17 when he received his first hammer and chisel for his combined birthday and Christmas present. “It was a big family and not a lot of money to go around, but I asked for it and that was my gift for the year. From there, I started carving in my spare time basically for 15 or 20 years,” he says. He continued to hone his craft throughout his long and storied career, taking on commissions, teaching his craft in South Dakota and Colorado and finally landing where he is today, at the City Museum, 16 years ago. There's hardly a stone variety out there that Bayer hasn't carved, and that makes his process fascinating to hear about because there are so many variables that it creates. As Bayer explains, “Certain stones

you can't use hammer and chisel because you'll blow the stone apart. That's really important. You have to know what kind of tools to use on what material, and I carve a variety of stones: marble, granite, limestone, calcite, fluorite and all kinds.” Once he's determined how to create his work, the excitement really begins. With each shaving taken off and each portion filed and sanded to his liking, his vision comes to life. In many of his pieces you can even see the evolution as it unfolded from his imagination. As Bayer puts it, “I like to show people what it starts from to what you can finish it to. You see a lot of art that is purely a fully finished, very smooth piece, but much of my abstract art is a combination of the two.” Even with all the achievements that Bayer has made throughout his life, he still finds the most rewarding part of the job to be

the reactions that he sees on kid's faces when they come to the City Museum. “Since I've been carving on the big stone outside for the past four and a half years, I've noticed that the first thing that happens when the kids get here is that they'll say to their parents, 'how far do you think Pauli got on that sculpture?' Every time kids show up here, they realize that they're going to see something new and to see how excited these kids get about what we do here is really amazing to me.” To find out more about Paul Bayer and his incredible body of work, you can visit his website at paulbayer.awardspace.com or just come down and visit with him as he continues to carve what we're sure will be, and already is, a true masterpiece. Marc Christian Fine Cabinetry and Interior Visions MORE THAN 200 SQUARE FEET

T

his 300-square-foot master bathroom was designed by Marc Christian Fine Cabinetry and Interior Visions in an updated traditional style to give the homeowners an elegant space. Soft-white painted custom beaded inset vanities; a makeup vanity and dresser maximize the storage and functionality of the bath. The vanities are accented with polished nickel exposed finial hinges and hardware as well as decorative integrated feet and paneled ends. His-and-her vanities have undermount rectangular sinks and polished nickel plumbing fixtures. The sit-down makeup vanity has a custom arched and beveled tri-view mirror and wall-mounted high-magnifying lighted makeup mirror. Exquisite Calcutta marble-inspired porcelain tile is used in a herringbone pattern on the floor and in a subway pattern on the shower walls with matching mosaic tile on the floor, ceiling and custom niches. The shower was designed with half walls and glass panels above for an open feeling. The freestanding Bain Ultra bathtub takes center stage below the vaulted ceiling, large windows and traditional chandelier. Why the judges love it: For a big bathroom, this space does not feel overwhelming. The designers did a fabulous job creating a simple design with elegant accents. The light fixture adds the right amount of warmth to the space. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Alspaugh Kitchen and Bath 150-200 SQUARE FEET

T

his elegant master bath designed by Alspaugh Kitchen and Bath uses painted molding mounted on the wall to emulate wall paneling. Combined with matching painted beaded inset cabinetry, the entire bathroom has a built-in appearance. The homeowners desired a classic white-and-marble look, but lower maintenance. To achieve the look, a combination of marble-sequel porcelain tiles, sintered stone countertops and real marble tiles were selected. With a strict white color scheme, attention to detail was essential. Two dormer windows and a slated roofline establish a lower crown height that was continued around the room. Indirect up-lighting and under-cabinet lighting bring airiness to the space. The tub was removed to make room for a larger shower with built-in seat and dual showerheads. The toilet was moved to the opposite end of the room for a more private space, and a window in the toilet room prevents the space from feeling too small. A heated floor and towel warmer enhance the luxury in this bath, while the open cabinets under the sink display towels to reinforce a feeling of soft comfort. A tall linen cabinet creates concealed storage space. A coffee bar is conveniently tucked under a dormer window. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Why the judges love it: The designer really used the home’s dormers to their advantage in the space. The cabinetry inset on the doors is elegant as is the mosaic rug pattern on the floor. The hidden barista is so cool, and the artwork is a nice complement to the overall space.

leaking toilet from a second-floor bathroom provided the perfect opportunity for a master bath redesign led by Alspaugh Kitchen and Bath. The dramatic Calacatta Michelangelo marble became the star of the show. The marble lines the shower walls and entry and tops the vanity cabinets setting the soft-gray color palette. A marble apron extends in front of both Kohler sinks and mirrors the profile of the backsplash shelf. The shower features two sets of Grohe showerheads and hand-held showers making it a luxurious space for two. Open shelving under the sinks provide a space to store and display towels. The custom valance cutout adds a touch of elegance and matches the toe cutouts beneath the drawer base. Custom cabinetry conceals a pullout wastebasket disguised as a

drawer base. For a bit of sparkle in the space, stainless-steel tiles are interspersed among the black tile inserts in the basket-weave-patterned marble mosaic floor. A textured cork wallpaper with a metallic sheen, polished nickel faucets, decorative mirrors and crystal sconces and knobs provide additional elegance to the space. Why the judges love it: We are drawn to the vibrancy of the floor pattern. The material choices make for a cohesive design. We can’t get enough of the marble drop-face vanity top. The metallic wallpaper is an added touch of elegance. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Photography by Anne Matheis.

R.G. Apel Development LESS THAN 100 SQUARE FEET

R

.G. Apel Development designed a guest bath that combines both form and function. You can enter the bath through the custom three-lighted door from either the bedroom or the hallway. The most striking feature in the bath is the specifically designed polished stainless steel trim that is used throughout the space. The metal accents the shower entry and is the material used for the apron molding around the vanity. The material ties in the modern stainless steel vessel sink, which sits atop a l2-inch thick glass top custom made in Canada. Besides the ceiling, there is no drywall in the bathroom. Instead nearly 500 square feet of linear mosaic glass tile is used giving the space a clean, sleek feel. Lighting highlights the contrast between the shine of the tile and steel for a masculine appearance. A heated floor keeps the space warm. This bathroom is totally accessible, including the no-threshold shower entry. Why the judges love it: This bathroom is contemporary in design but still very warm feeling. We love the use of tile and the play on texture between the glass mosaic and steel. The subtle lighting lets the tile shine. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Accent on Cabinets and Slavin Construction MORE THAN 200 SQUARE FEET

A

t approximately 420 square feet, the large master bathroom presented a challenge in working within such a large space. It was important to designers Accent on Cabinets and Slavin Construction to not just fill the space with wall-to-wall cabinets. The homeowners wanted a bathroom that gave them the feeling of being on vacation. Inspiration was taken from both New York City and Paris. The Baccarat chandelier is elegant and set the tone for the space. Marble flooring is intricately placed for a feeling of sophistication. The Waterworks tub is positioned to make you feel as though you are bathing on a private terrace. Custom cabinets were designed as furniture pieces and not just cabinetry. A subtle glaze on the cabinetry brings in warm tones to blend with the rest of the fixtures in the bath. As you enter the bath, the doors were designed to fold into the walls making them part of the woodwork when opened. No detail was left out in designing this magnificent master bath. Why the judges love it: The tub area with the windows is absolutely gorgeous. The floor tile is amazing and well designed. We love the Parisian flair in this bath. Alspaugh Kitchen and Bath 100-150 SQUARE FEET

A

lspaugh Kitchen and Bath began this bathroom renovation with a simple equestrian for a “just-for-her” space with plenty of storage. To achieve this goal, double sinks were removed in favor of a single sink. A small closet was replaced by a tall angled cabinet for storage of extra linens. Sharply angled walls presented a challenge. The designer’s solution was to remove an awkwardly placed door and a seldom-used tub. This created a more useable space with a larger shower. Custom cabinetry in a rift-cut oak provides a soft, neutral look. Mid-height cabinetry anchors the floating sink cabinet and drawers. The wall behind the sink features a stunning Arabesque pattern of glass and stone tile. Sleek sconces function as decorative accents that deliver even light across the face. Large-scale

porcelain tile covers the bathroom floor. The same large tiles line the shower walls, wall-matching mosaic tiles adorn the shower floor. A mosaic stone listello outlines the shower’s angled shape around the shower floor. The spacious shower also includes a seat, a new window with enclosed blinds, a niche for shower products and a hand-held shower. Why the judges love it: The designer had a difficult space to work with, but they made it function well. There is lots of storage for the awkward shape, and the material selections are beautiful. Dashing Design by Elizabeth Kavlock LESS THAN 100 SQUARE FEET

A

hall bath used by all visitors was in need of a redesign. Since it was the only bathroom in the home to retain a tub for resale purposes, the homeowners were afraid they couldn’t achieve a “wow” factor. Dashing Design by Elizabeth Kavlock suggested several unexpected selections to make the space a showstopper while still maintaining functionality. A Kohler undermount tub was chosen and a tile flange was added on two sides while the other two sides were treated as tub decking with a seat and front ledge. A custom tub/ shower guard is an unexpected touch in place of a shower curtain or slider. Custom back-painted glass gives a beautiful shine against the matte large format tile on the floor and the full bathroom-plumbing wall. Care was taken in the layout to ensure a great amount of veining for the eye to enjoy and also in matching the veining up to conceal

seams. The Oceanside hex tile inspired the hex tile on the Kohler vanity bowl. The custom-painted vanity cabinet features all drawers. The designer added a mirror frame around the Kohler medicine cabinet to increase the impression of the recessed cabinet. Three Tech pendant lights on a wire were chosen instead of a vanity light. Chrome fixtures were chosen to accent the reflective qualities of some of the other bathroom elements. Why the judges love it: This bathroom is simply done, but the tile up the wall makes the tub area interesting. The veiling on the marble is beautiful and the application is very clever. Overall, this bathroom is simple and tasteful. Photography by Jerry Voloski, Canon Shots Photography. STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM AUGUST 2018

Mixing “the old with the new,” renovation of this gracious Clayton townhouse was a joyful adventure for the owners and their designer.

R

eady to scale down from their stately family residence in Frontenac, these well-traveled, fun-loving empty-nesters began looking for a home better suited to their newfound freedom. The vibrant, semi-urban atmosphere and walkability of Old Town Clayton proved irresistible and, in 2016, the couple found a 1980s-vintage Georgian townhouse that could be adapted to their lifestyle and many interests. What makes this renovation particularly intriguing is the husband’s lineage as a direct descendant of Auguste Chouteau, William Clark (of Lewis and Clark fame) and several other historic figures. An avid outdoorsman, prominent business owner and amateur historian, his list of must-haves for the project included space for his heirloom art collection, antiques and extensive library; a storage area for his sporting equipment; a wine room; and, thinking ahead, handicap accessibility. Although somewhat more general, the wife’s objectives for their new home were equally purposeful. “I like to be surrounded by beauty, inside and out,” she says. “I wanted it to be colorful, but not ostentatious. We had the vision, but we needed Gigi to implement it.” Enter Gigi Lombrano, ASID, an award-winning designer with more than 30 years of experience in the local industry and involved in every aspect of the project from start to finish. Working from architect John Odom’s plans, P.J. Prifti Construction began the 18-month makeover, which included installation of an elevator from the tuck-under garage to the main floor, major reorientation of the main-level spaces, a 2-foot extension to the keeping room and addition of a stunning veranda at the rear. “Our goal was to make everything look as if it had always been there, but fresher and more lively,” Lombrano explains. In the two-story entry area, for example, the wainscoting was raised and on the staircase, the finials were removed and the existing handrail was painted high-gloss to match the front door. The scale of the space also allowed for a fanciful neo-classic wallpaper pattern without seeming “busy.” The living room’s dark-paneled walls were converted to a creamy hue with a metallic sheen that optimizes the

light streaming through the arched windows. Floor-to-ceiling bookcases were added on both sides of the existing fireplace, and every piece of millwork was meticulously matched to the original. Previously a library/study, the adjacent room was transformed into the formal dining room. Here, the bookcases were removed and replaced with picture frame trim. The existing small opening from the main hall was enlarged creating an arched entryway into the dining room accented with pillars, and in place of the dark paneling, subtle silver metallic paint gives the space luminosity. Some of the furnishings throughout the townhouse had come from the owners’ former home, but were reupholstered for a more transitional look. The dining ensemble, however, was newly acquired. Seating 10, the Theodore Alexander dining table is inlaid crotch mahogany and complemented by a burl wood Jonathan Charles sideboard inlaid with mother-of-pearl. Above the table, a Venetian-style mirrored medallion and crystal chandelier add a touch of bling. Describing the wife as a “fabric connoisseur” and “fearless with color,” Lombrano indicated the Regency-styled Designmaster dining chairs, each covered in a tasteful combination of four different fabrics to “make a statement.” Similarly bold, embroidered silk drapes in rich magenta line the windows. The dining room’s dignified ambience made it the perfect setting for several of the cherished paintings handed down through the husband’s family for generations. Painted in 1856, a portrait of his three-times-great-grandfather, once governor of Kentucky, hangs above the fireplace. Over the sideboard is an original portrait of William Clark. On display elsewhere are a portrait of Clark’s wife, Julia, daughter of American statesman John Hancock, and a variety of western and sharecropper art pieces by St. Louis-born Oscar Berninghaus

and William Aiken Walker, also one of Oprah Winfrey’s favorite painters. The kitchen/keeping room area was significantly expanded and an archway was created to maximize the openness of this combined space. Lombrano chose subtly varying shades of purplish/gray for the kitchen cabinetry, custom-designed by Accents on Cabinetry. Like all of the home’s stonework, the granite countertops and 11-foot island surface were fabricated by Metro Marble & Granite.

Top: Comfy seating and colorful accents make the keeping room a favorite spot to relax. Bottom: Significantly expanded, the remodeled keeping room is filled with natural light and overlooks the veranda and exquisitely landscaped rear yard.

Opposite page: The wife’s personal vanity area is appointed with a quartzite top, miniature Kallista sink, mother-of-pearl pulls, and crystal sconces.

Among the kitchen’s other eye-catching appointments are a herringbone mother-of-pearl backsplash, hammered nickel pulls, mirrored refrigerator doors, a Wolf induction cooktop and the farmhouse sink’s distinctive plumbing fixtures from Immerse. Crystal chandeliers light the island, which is surrounded by Napoleon-backed swivel counter stools, and a cleverly disguised “dog station” provides a bowl nook for the couple’s beloved Shih Tzu. Transom windows flood the keeping room with sunlight and offer a lovely view of the rear yard. New furnishings were purchased for this colorful gathering space, and grasscloth wallpaper in a metallic plaid adds a touch of whimsy to the recipe desk alcove. Significant structural changes were made to the main-floor master suite, as well. One exterior window was converted to a door accessing the veranda. Other windows were removed to create wall space for the new Theodore

Alexander bed; the marble surround on the fireplace was replaced and the traditional mantel retained; and the original dining room was reconstructed as the master closet, with a custom jewelry armoire and chandelier. To achieve a softer, more tranquil mood, the master bedroom is appointed with flocked, pearlized wallpaper; ethereal, shimmery drapes; and épinglé textiles reminiscent of chinoiserie. Antique lamps and nightstands flank the bed, and at the foot, a cushioned church pew serves as a bench. Superbly designed by Odom, the veranda is an elegant, fresh-air oasis, defined by columns and a semicircular stone wall. “The owners wanted a large covered outdoor space, but didn’t want to upstage the landscaping,” says Lombrano, “so we chose simple Lexington outdoor furnishings with just a pop of orange for color.” Responding to the wife’s love of beauty, GK Landscape

Design transformed the yard into an exquisite English garden with water feature. And completing the husband’s wish list, the lower level of the townhouse was remodeled to include a wine cellar for his favorite vintages, a “sports closet” for his vast assortment of fishing and hunting equipment, and an exercise area, family room and bath. Elegant yet lighthearted, every detail of the refurbished townhouse reflects the joie de vivre of its owners. “It was a collaborative effort,” Lombrano says modestly. The delighted owners, however, would be more inclined to describe this extraordinary residence as proof of the designer’s expertise and unique ability to fulfill her clients’ vision. ENDLESS

You’ll be in awe of Jay Laux’s glowing green landscape in Wildwood.

By Lucyann Boston Photography by Kim Dillon

Jay Laux's Wildwood garden can easily be described in multi-syllabic superlatives. But on a hot summer day, when someone steps through the wooden gate and catches their first glimpse of the cool, green glowing landscape, the words you are most likely to hear are "Oooh," "Aaah" and "Wow." Fine gravel pathways, lined with multi-toned hostas, loop and crisscross down a steep, tree-covered hillside making the slightly over two-third-acre space seem refreshingly endless. Planting areas created with natural stone anchor the garden's elevations and flagstone steps provide access from one level to another. It is a garden that has evolved over the 30 years Jay and his wife Brenda have lived in their home. Moreover, it is a garden that lives in harmony with the wooded, ravine-like topography of the property. The first two years the couple lived in their new home, however, Jay fought a losing battle to create greenspace. Initially, the builder sodded the back yard. When that sod died, "I went out and bought more sod the next year," Jay now laughingly recalls. "The sod died again. The third year, I went to a nursery and said, 'What do you have that grows in the shade?' I came home with eight Honeybells hostas in one gallon pots." Those 'Honeybells' sweet-scented their way into Jay's heart. The heart-shaped leaves, bright green color and fragrant blossoms did all he asked of them and flourished in the shady setting. Jay divided those eight, and then divided those divisions and before long there were glowing, green 'Honeybells' throughout the hillside. "I split them umpteen times. I must have 2,000 plants from those original eight hostas," he estimates. Providing happy homes for all those baby hostas, required more than a bit of landscape engineering. "When we bought the house, I don't think there was more

STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

AUGUST 2018 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

than 10 to 12 feet of level ground," Brenda recalls. In addition, Jay suggests that Wildwood is misnamed and should have been called Rockwood. "You can't plant a petunia without using a pickaxe." To solve both of those problems and create level and fertile planting areas, Jay brought in two tandem-axle truckloads of one-inch limestone gravel, topped that with landscape fabric and then spread two tandem-axle loads of Missouri bottom soil over the fabric. Stone retaining walls keep the gravel and soil in place. Gardening on such a grand scale was never something Jay, a retired contractor, planned to do. "My father was a baker and I grew up living above the bakery. Our back yard was gravel. When Brenda and I moved into our first house, I started growing things, but nothing like this." Two things have spurred Jay on: discovering plants he wanted to add to the garden and needing places to put them. A case in point was an immense hosta that needed to be removed from a client's yard and was so large Jay needed a Bobcat to accomplish the task. Rumored to be called Elegant Splendor or perhaps Regal Splendor, the weight of the dramatically beautiful plant caused the back two wheels of the Bobcat to come off the ground. Several hunks sawed off that plant now grow happily in Jay's garden. In addition to the numerous hostas and ferns, he has added some shrubs to provide winter interest to the landscape. "When you have a perennial garden in the winter you are pretty much looking at a pile of dirt," he jokes. Oak leaf hydrangea, with their interesting branching and peeling bark, lacecap hydrangeas, Norway spruce and Japanese maples add structure to the landscape.

He also has discovered a passion for propagation. Perhaps beginning with the joy of filling his garden with so many decedents of those first eight 'Honeybells', Jay loves taking the plants in his garden, creating new plants and often giving away their offspring. When his hostas throw seeds, he pots them up and either uses them in his own garden or passes them on to garden clubs for plant sales. On flagstone walkways edged in the creeping ground cover ajuga, he directs the ajuga heading out over the flagstones over ice cube trays. As the plant continues to creep and send out tiny roots covering the tray, he can trim back the ajuga and each cube receptacle has become a perfect ajuga plug to insert somewhere else in the garden. In his work area at the top of the garden and underneath the deck off the back of the house, Jay has set up a small plant nursery using clear plastic storage tubs as tiny greenhouses to allow seedlings to gain strength before planting them in his own garden or sharing them with other gardeners. He is a huge believer in using Hormex Liquid Concentrate in water to minimize transplant shock and to generate bulb production in the elephant ears he uses as accents in the garden. Out of 30 elephant ear bulbs I have probably gotten 250 bulbs," he says. "What I enjoy is reaping the benefits of what I have planted." Although he has an irrigation system installed in his garden, he does not use it daily. "I want the plants to survive on their own whenever possible," he explains. In an area filled with deer, Jay has managed to confound the marauders by backing his split rail fence with a seven-foot high deer fence. "When it was six feet high, they could do a vertical leap and get over it. I made it seven feet tall and that ended it," he reports with a note of pride in his voice. In unfenced areas, he has become an expert in finding plants that deer ignore: golden tansy, ornamental onion, elephant ear and Russian sage. Considering the manicured beauty of the landscape and the breathtaking design that links the lush garden together, it seems impossible that one man has created it all. Jay's garden, however, is a one-man show. This year alone he spread 14 cubic yards of mulch. He also concedes that rather than creating additional planting areas, he is using ground cover to green up the far corners of his property, so he is not adding to his mulching chores. The garden has been "pretty much as it is now for the past 10 years," he says. Jay's greatest joy in his garden is simply sitting and looking at it. Unlike many gardeners who are continually getting up to pull a weed here or cut back a vine there, Jay is not a fanatic. "I can be content just to look at it," he says. "I garden because I want to, not because I need to." See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.

Its ruby-splashed, butterfly-like foliage is highlighted with wonderful, warm autumn tones. In fall its evergreen leaves transform to coppery orange, russet and cinnamon. Its evergreen leaves look good all winter, making the plant ideal for holiday planters. A hardy perennial that also makes a fantastic ground cover.” Ann Lapides, Sugar Creek Gardens. two: “Calibrachoa or trailing petunias come in every color you could want. They look great spring to frost and provide an excellent "spill" effect, growing up to 4' long in a season.” Claire Weiss, Frisella Nursery. three: “Creeping Rosemary is an excellent cascading choice for a sunny window box because it loves to be hot and dry! The deep green foliage adds unique texture that you can also use in the kitchen, while delicate blue to lavender-blue flowers will emerge in the summer.” Laura Caldie, Maypop Coffee & Garden Shop. four: “The trailing annual Scaevola thrives in hot, humid weather. This makes it the perfect plant for spring and summer in St. Louis! We also love it because of its ever-present purple-blue blooms!” Andria Graeler, Chesterfield Valley Nursery. five: “The lotus vine has feathery foliage and a bushy trailing habit that make it a great addition to container plantings. Its fine gray green leaves look almost iridescent in the sun, a wonderful enhancement to any flower combination. Though it prefers adequate moisture, it can tolerate drought and holds up well in Missouri humidity.” Jim Oldani, Timberwinds Nursery. six: “Licorice plant’s trailing stems will cascade from your window boxes with ease without taking over. Its silvery foliage provides distinct color contrast when paired with vibrant annuals flowers.” Christine Knoernschild, Passiglia’s Nursery.

SPOTLIGHT

BEAT THE

BUGS By Shannon Craig

our work is finally done. The garden is planned and planted, the weeds are pulled, the deck is set and your patio furniture is beckoning. You pour a glass of something lovely and pour yourself into an Adirondack chair. It is, at last, time to enjoy a summer sunset that makes your weeks of toil worth it. But that’s when you hear the all-too-familiar buzz, feel the all-too-familiar bite and face your necessary but limited options: slather on the smelly sprays or retreat. Not this summer, sources say. From screens and drapes to preventative sprays, St. Louis’ mosquito specialists have a variety of solutions for this summer bummer. “Screens are actually called ‘insect mesh,’ did you know that?” asks Debbie Hogue of Broadview Screen, the makers of custom and replacement screens for contractors across the area. “The term ‘insect’ refers to the flying variety—think grasshoppers, wasps, and of course, mosquitoes,” she says. If you’re looking to bring the outdoors in, or, bring an indoor-like space outside with a screened room, Broadview offers both fiberglass and aluminum screens for the form and function your space requires. “Some people like the old school aluminum, but depending on where you live, you might need it!” Debbie says. Country dwellers take note: when dew forms on your taut and perfect screens, grasshoppers and wasps will chew through the screen to collect the moisture, leaving just enough space for pesky mosquitoes. “Aluminum is your ideal option,” she warns. For something with less permanence and more elegance, Vicki Dreste of Maplewood-based Design & Detail suggests drapes to keep mosquitoes at bay. “Some of our beautiful outdoor fabrics block UV rays, don’t mildew or fade and also discourage insects,” she explains.

50

AUGUST 2018 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

Don’t let pesky insects ruin your outdoor experience.

“If you have a terrace or an overhang with columns, these wide-width synthetic fabrics can also help to add shade or block cold drafts in cooler months. And aesthetically, they’re just gorgeous.” If you prefer a less-than-immersive outdoor experience — but still want to enjoy the evening summer breezes with cinematic flair — the free-flowing beauty of a drape may be just what you need to fend off mosquitoes. But if your only way to go is the patio, you might need to get proactive. “There are five Ts of mosquito control,” Martha Baur of Balloon Garden Design explains. “Tip, toss, turn, tarps and take care.” Beyond landscape architecture, Baur also owns a Mosquito Squad franchise, or “the founding fathers of mosquito control,” as she calls it. “Our program is preventative, protecting your outdoor area for 21 days against mosquitoes. But it also eliminates them on contact. When females, which are the only ones that bite, land on shrubs or plants to get sugars to lay eggs, our barrier takes care of them.” With both an EPA registered and approved product as well as an all-natural version, Baur’s Mosquito Squad provides peace of mind throughout the season while requiring no extra work from you, the homeowner. No hassle, no buzz, no bites. There’s more than one way to beat the bugs, and with so many customizable options there’s bound to be one that works for you and your outdoor ambitions. So pull up your chair, pour your drink and take in the best of what summer has to offer—right in your own back yard. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Let there BE LIGHT

The removal of partitions and strategic installation of mirrors has let in more light to Tom Kraatz’s renovated master bath and created the illusion of a much larger space.

By Barbara E. Stefàno Photography courtesy of Gegg Design & Cabinetry

Built in the 1970s, Tom Kraatz’s Kirkwood home possessed some anachronistic elements in the master bath that kept the retiree from fully enjoying the generous 375-square-foot room. “While there was a lot of space, it was all disconnected and in smaller separate rooms,” Tom says. “The prior owners presumably wanted independent bathrooms, which made for redundant fixtures, aisles and restricted natural light into the different spaces.” The old floorplan included two toilet-and-sink sets separated by a wall that ran parallel to a window by the tub, blocking the natural light from the rest of the master bath. With the redesign, Keith Gegg of Gegg Design & Cabinetry kept the his-and-hers vanity and one toilet, and shifted them to the wall that lies perpendicular to the tub and window. The toilet is separated from the sink by a pocket door, and it was Tom’s idea to also keep the closets open near the ceiling to let even more light into the entire room.

BEFORE AFTER

“The biggest goal was to have a unified space and give a sense of openness. The house is situated on a hillside in a natural setting, so the views are important and are to be enjoyed,” says Keith. “There were three major window groupings in the original master bath and each was only visible from each independent space. So, we wanted to allow all the windows to be visible from the vanity area; this would allow natural light into the room at different times of the day. The new design has a view of all the windows from the vanity, either in peripheral view or via the full-width mirror.” Keith further enhanced the lighting with can lighting strategically placed over the vanity and in the closets. With lighting addressed, he was able to warm up the room by replacing the stark-white — and rather dated — vanity with inviting dark wood. The tub is modern and sleek, while the new shower/steam area is larger and more open than the old shower had been. And, while the renovated master bath is physically smaller than the before — Keith moved the wall adjoining the master bedroom by 2 feet to make the bedroom larger — it looks and feels roomier and more luxurious. “It wasn't very fun before,” Tom says. “We had a lot of doors to access clothing, but it wasn't really functional. It flows better now [with] two private, separate closets—his and hers closets—that are open. It looks like this is what was meant to be here.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

CALIFORNIA’S SECRET WINE TOWN

Lodi Lake. Photography by Lisa Van Dyke.

Lazing in Sacramento’s southern shadow, this inland Cali town – pronounced low-dye, not -dee – is still figuring out what it wants to be — and we think that’s all the more reason to visit now, before too many tourists discover Wine Enthusiast’s 2015 Wine Region of the Year. By Jamie Siebrase

58

AUGUST 2018 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

Visit Lodi, and you’ll get a sense of what Napa Valley was like during its heyday in the 1960s — “Back when Napa didn’t have all of the giant wineries — the monuments,” says Russ Munson, owner of Wine & Roses, a luxury hotel in the heart of the Lodi AVA. A half-century ago, Napa was still very casual, and that’s what’s waiting for visitors in Lodi today, at 85 boutique wineries that don’t require reservations or wads of cash from guests looking to sample some excellent small-lot vino while chatting up the owner-growers at, for example, Klinker Brick Winery, where you can taste the Felten family’s flagship zinfandel daily, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. “There are more Old Vine Zinfandel vineyards in Lodi than anyplace else in the state,” says Steve Felten, a fifth-generation grape grower and co-owner of Klinker Brick Winery. Many of Felten’s vines were planted over a hundred years ago, and red grapes like his account for roughly two-thirds of Lodi’s 100,000 acres of plantings. For Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah, start with Mettler Family Vineyards, a certified sustainable, certified organic operation; Lodi’s principal whites are Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, the latter of which is a must-sip at Harney Lane Winery. For a modern tasting, head to the steel-frame tasting room at m2 Wines, founded by Layne Montgomery, who grew up in Missouri. Many tourists come to California in the summer, but for wine lovers Lodi is a year-round destination best experienced in the wake of fall harvest, when temperatures dip into the 70s and winemakers have ample time to chat up their customers with tales that often allude to Lodi’s rich agricultural history. Napa grows its own crop, of course, but Lodi has been supplementing Wine Country’s grape supply for decades — and you’ll notice the quality while hopping between tasting rooms on a cruiser or kayak. That’s right! Lodi has water-to-wine tours, and they’re led by Dan Arbuckle, owner of Headwaters Kayak Shop, an experienced guide leading individual

and group kayaking excursions that take off from Lake Lodi, known for its beginner-friendly flatwater kayaking. Arbuckle does monthly full-moon paddles and fishing trips, too, and Stand-up Paddle Board Yoga classes are held weekly at Lodi Lake Park, where the world-renowned birding peaks between October and February as Sandhill cranes descend on the nearby Woodbridge Wilderness Area, an established 58-acre riparian habitat open daily to hikers and bikers, sunrise to sunset. “We’re a wine destination, but so much more,” says Nancy Beckman, president and CEO of Visit Lodi. Galleries and antique shops line downtown Lodi’s charming shopping district, home to the original A&W Root Beer, and some upscale dining options, including Fenix, offering contemporary American cuisine. I know it sounds crazy to recommend pasta to readers who have access to The Hill, but Pietro’s Trattoria will not disappoint if you’re in the mood for an authentic Italian lunch or dinner, best enjoyed on the joint’s enchanting patio. Don’t leave town without having lunch at The Farm Café at Michael David Winery, and make sure to take at least one meal at Towne House Restaurant at Wine & Roses, with a farm-to-table food program overseen by James Beard award-winning chef Bradley Ogden. If you get tired of wine, there are a few more tastings to try:

Sample local diary at Cheese Central, offering year-round cooking classes on everything from tapas to curing; three miles west, the Olive Drop is a delicious stop-off, with an olive oil tasting center housed inside the owner’s period-style house. You’ll get a sense of place during docent-led tours of Hill House Museum, a turn-of-the-last-century Victorian open to the public Sundays. South of Lodi’s main strip there’s Micke Grove Park, with Micke Grove Golf Links, the San Joaquin County Historical Museum, and a 3-acre Japanese Garden gulped up by flowering cherry trees, accented with a Koi pond and tea house. Please read this next sentence carefully: Wine & Roses isn’t the place to stay in Lodi — it’s the only place to stay. And that’s fine because, dotted with 120-year-old conifer trees, this 66-room ranch-turned-resort has everything you’ll need including luxury suites styled on the early California aesthetic and an award-winning spa. Like St. Louis, Lodi is a multi-generational place centered on family values. In the 1950s, when Lodi residents needed their own hospital, organizers went door-to-door to raise funds to build one. You’ll find a similar can-do, community-centered spirit just about everywhere you turn — and that might be this town’s most valuable trade secret of all. SMALL SCALE

Bold, Not Brash

Interior designer Nisha Tailor marries her love of vibrant color with sensible neutrals in her décor. Her subdued opulence is exemplified in a chic but cozy guest bedroom where her theme was "Love Your Journey, enjoy the ride". By Barbara E. Stefàno Photography by That One Summer Photography

Nisha Tailor had almost forgotten how very colorful color could be. After 18 years away from her native India, the interior designer, who owns Nisha Tailor Interior Designs, recalls the “shock” of seeing the bold — almost garish — hues on every wall of every home she visited. “I was so surprised how much color was everywhere. Orange, blue, red — every room a different color. Everywhere, too much,” Nisha says. “So, when I returned I brought back a little bit of that, but not so much.” Specifically, she imported the deep green that is so popular in Asia but underappreciated in the United States … and paired it and other shades with the neutrals that are underappreciated in her homeland. Nisha's signature balance of exuberance and elegance is evident in her redesign of the guest bedroom of her Wentzville home. There, striking fabrics, distressed wood, antiques and, yes, strong colors mingle in a surprisingly symbiotic collection of design odds and ends. Somehow, the East-meets-Old West mishmash just works. “I wanted to bring the farmhouse thing in; that’s popular right now. I wanted to make [the space] very serene and relaxing but didn’t want to go with beige or gray.” She did, however, begin with a clean palette of white, embellished with her own geode-inspired artwork painted directly on the wall near the bed. Right beside the rich green, blue and gold veining of the rock painting stands a rustic tree-branch table in gold and a banana plant that lends warmth and soft lushness. Splashes of gold turn up tastefully in the lampshade, a throw blanket and in other small fixtures in the room. The geode painting is echoed in the throw pillows on the white-clad bed and upholstered corner chair, as well as in a green bike sculpture that adorns the wall over the bed. “I really like bicycles, so the theme is ‘Love your journey, enjoy the ride.’” Clients of Nisha are enjoying this vibrant ride along with her. Her clientele, many of whom are natives of India, have been known to wait two or three years to work with her. She addresses their tastes in tincture with eye-catching fabrics and fixtures, and tones it down everywhere else. “I think they feel like I understand them,” she says. “They love my designs. They think, ‘Wow, I would never have thought of bringing in gold.’ They think it’s going to look like a temple. I ask them to trust me, and they see it works.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Places to go, things to do and see and people who are leaving their mark on the world of style. By Moe Godat

The Museum of Outdoor Arts Element House, New Mexico New Mexico is a state rich with natural beauty, though it can be a bit hot for visitors from colder regions of the country. In 2014, a building designed by MOS Architects and called the Museum of Outdoor Arts Element House was erected to create both a guest house and visitor center for a nearby land art project called Star Axis. Star Axis was designed by artist Charles Ross and uses architecture and art to accentuate the surrounding night sky. The house was meant to accomplish more than asylum from the New Mexican heat for its visitors; the house was designed to operate independently from public utilities by developing on-site energy generation. The building’s modular design and structurally insulated panels, called SIPs, support their goal in using sustainable energy. The building’s basic components give the structure

a modern feel while also increasing environmental performance. Perhaps more interesting than its sustainability is the structure and design of the building, which is based on the geometric systems of growth and expansion one module after another. For example, instead of having one chimney located in a central location of the home, the chimney was decentralized into vertical skylights and solar chimneys created to keep the building cool. This ventilation is one way to keep New Mexico’s heat from overwhelming the building, while raw-aluminum shingles with small air gaps between them cover the house to redistribute heat from the hotter side of the building to the cooler, shaded side. These innovations and the building’s simplistic, natural appeal allows visitors to see Star Axis at all times of the year despite the temperature.

Photography by Tim Soar

Started in 2013 and completed in 2015, New Ludgate sits on a site filled with history, both real and fictional. The Belle Sauvage coaching inn was not only a common place for travellers to stay and visit, it also became a common site in famous author Charles Dickens’s novels; the inn hosted both Pocahontas and the first live rhinoceros to ever visit London. After World War II, the inn fell into disrepair. The site of One and Two New Ludgate was formerly used for '80s-style office buildings and offered little accessibility or beauty to the public. For the new projects, the space was split into two office buildings to create an outdoor space to revamp the history of the Belle Sauvage route, which had disappeared. The designs made by Fletcher-Priest Architects reinstated and improved the public realm of the entire area and brought a modern addition to the city of London. Not only did they recreate the old pedestrian route, but they also added a piazza to gather lunchtime sunlight for tired passersby and hungry office workers. Each building is comprised of nine stories for office space plus the ground floors, which boast retail shops and bars. These stores sit under milky glass awnings, providing sunlight all day. A terrace on the south-facing roof overlooks St. Paul's Cathedral and the surrounding city of London.

Longview Farm, Town and Country, MO Photography by Kim Dillon Workers and volunteers labor behind the scenes every day through St. Louis’s summer heat to bring Town and Country residents a little more natural beauty to enjoy. Sixteen years ago in the early summer of 2002, renovations began in Town and Country to help bring a new abundance of natural beauty and wildlife back to the area. The city asked the local garden club for help completing the project at Longview Farm. Originally created in the '60s by local garden designer Edith Mason, the space had overgrown with weeds and fallen into disrepair. It took the team of dedicated volunteers six weeks just to get the patio back into shape. The main obstacle in making the park accessible for visitors was removing large amounts of poison ivy, honeysuckle and other invasive species of weed. After months of hard work, the park was ready for its grand opening in September of 2002. Longview Farm provides a place for people to escape their busy city lives to relax in a naturally beautiful setting made specially for them by hard-working volunteers. Since its completion, every September the garden club and other volunteers collaborate to choose which

plants will be included in the upcoming planting season. The master gardeners and horticulturally talented individuals of the garden club have logged over 10,000 volunteer hours over the years, and the club currently has 14 active members, 10 who are master gardeners. “Park visitors stop by on Fridays, our workday, to see what we’re doing and to ask gardening questions,” says Claire Chosid, the head volunteer at Longview. “It’s amazing to us that so many people love what we do and have events at the park because of the gardens we’ve created. It’s just such a rewarding project.” Seven years ago, Longview Farm volunteers also began working at the greenhouse at South Tech High School with the St. Louis Greenhouse Plant Society. Claire says, “St. Louis Greenhouse Plant Society is a non-profit, wholly managed by volunteers. The ability to grow unusual plants from seed and plugs is one of the things that, in my opinion, sets the Longview gardens apart from other gardens.”The volunteers’ work is a true labor of love, bringing beauty to St. Louis no matter the weather and defining Longview a natural jewel to our community. CLASSIC OR CRAZE

SLIDING BARN DOORS We asked local design professionals if sliding barn doors are a classic or a craze. Here is what they had to say. By Melissa Mauzy

CLASSIC

“Using sliding doors is an adopted design from long ago. This design detail is extremely versatile with all styles from traditional to contemporary. It also allows a less obtrusive installation by using exposed hardware. This concept invokes creativity for many different applications and is obtainable at different price points. The sliding barn door is definitely a classic that will continue to develop over time.” Chris Powers, Alspaugh Kitchen & Bath. “I love a sliding barn door! They are a great way to create an accent and extra texture in a space while not taking up any usable square footage of your room; thus making spaces more functional! They are definitely NOT a craze. I think what’s so intriguing about them is how it feels like we are bringing something more typical of an exterior or more industrial setting into a residential environment. Play with styles, finishes and material when incorporating into a space.” Anne Boedges, Anne Marie Design Studio. “It is and will always be a classic. The choice of materials and hardware is vast and can work with any style. The frequently used reclaimed wood has been joined by more traditional, contemporary and transitional materials. For our own design studio, we have chosen solid panels of opaque glass, simple and sleek, highlighted with stainless-steel hardware. Think of the barn door as the replacement for the other classic, the fully enclosed decorative pocket doors popular in St. Louis homes in the 19th and 20th centuries. The complex installation and difficulty of repair for these magnificent pocket doors has made the sliding barn door the favored choice. Try double barn doors to frame both sides of an opening for a grand entry in to a more formal area. The zero distance door swing of barn doors is a space saving benefit, which helps confirm its classic status.” Vicki Lewis, Directions In Design Inc. “Sliding barn doors will endure, a classic for sure (less the 'barn' part). Surface-mounted sliding doors are a great alternative to a traditional hinged door, especially when the swing of a hinged door proves problematic. The doors themselves offer a wide variety of design options, and the hardware offers the opportunity for even more design interest. So back to the 'barn' part. While there will always be a place for rustic, we do feel we will soon reach the point of oversaturation when it comes to barn parts. Won’t be long and the most asked question will be 'how do I hide too much barn?'" FORNEY + architecture, LLC. “The idea of sliding barn doors is innovative, but a trend. That said, they serve a purpose when pocket doors are too invasive or too costly to install. Pocket doors were historically used in Victorian times to separate formal seating areas and entryways. A barn door sliding mechanism is one that can be easily installed and utilized. They now have style options to choose from lending some so streamlined in their design they don’t feel like a 'barn door'.” Lynn Eastin, Lynn Eastin Interiors.

“Look out as barn doors have become a new classic and not a craze! These old-time beauties have been resurrected from our past…. be it American, English, European, Italian or Scandinavian. You will find versions of these in numerous styles as well as in new construction and in older recently remodeled properties. The ease of operating and to repair them (compared to pocket doors inserted into a wall) is very easy. They are a 'new classic' and here to stay!” Joyce Cockrell, Joyce Cockrell Designs LLC.

CRAZE

“Barn doors are more in the category of craze due to the strong influence of reclaimed and industrial design features, which seem in high demand by many consumers. In furniture, you see many introductions with barn door influences. They appear in armoires, cabinets, consoles and styles are from rustic to clean design. They are offering many different designs to reach the millennium to the baby-boomer.” Ross Anzalone, Amini's. “Barn doors are a craze unless you actually live in a barn. However, sliding doors with exposed hardware can be useful and efficient in tight quarters where pocket doors aren’t feasible due to existing wall construction or cost.” Shelley Satke Niemeier, SPACE ARCHITECTS, DESIGNERS + BUILDERS. “I think barn doors with the heavy hardware is more of a craze than a classic. To me, classic is an element that can adapt to a wider range of architecture and furnishing styles. A classic can be mixed and updated to keep up with new trends but maintains its appeal." Linda K. Kusmer, Total Interior Designs Inc.
