HELLO

QUIET

PEACE & "Surround yourself with all that brings you peace, joy, and a sense of belonging. Let your home become more than four walls and a roof. Let it be a sanctuary where your heart feels safe, your mind finds clarity, and your spirit is free to breathe." — Unknown Don't we all just need a little peace and quiet sometimes? Having a space in our home where we can recharge and escape the noise of everyday life? Many call this a personal sanctuary. This space, this sanctuary, offers comfort, calm and a place to regroup and reset. It could be a chair by a window, a yoga room, a library, a greenhouse or a small nook where you can pause, breathe and reconnect with yourself. No to-do lists allowed! When my college roommate told me her favorite space in her new home was the master bath, I thought, "Really?" She had recently relocated from California to St. Louis with 2 toddlers in tow. Her new master bath was a spa-like haven complete with a comfy chair, dimmable wall scones and a lock on the door! Protecting her privacy had become a priority. Gone are the days when bathrooms were solely utilitarian spaces. Our winning Baths of the Year incorporate multitudes of luxury amenities creating a sense of serenity in each of the award winning bathrooms. Come chill with us (pages 20-29). Sometimes we just need a little peace and quiet to keep our heads on straight.

design DILEMMA

Maximized

SPACE

Learn about how our local designers turn small, awkward bathrooms into places full of functionality and storage. Edited by Lily Stassi

Chris Paul, Alspaugh Kitchen and Bath Small baths can be maximized through organization of storage. Towel and paper storage can often be placed in a cabinet above the toilet. Cabinet drawer inserts can optimize toiletry and make up needs. Magnification mirrors are a common request that should be carefully placed. Privacy for the toilet can be achieved with a half wall or a tall cabinet, which can serve as linen storage. Mirrors and lighting are a key component of small bath design. The face is best illuminated with overhead and lighting on both sides of the face. Photography by Alise O’Brien.

Elizabeth Kavlock, .925 Design by Elizabeth In this very compact bathroom, the design began by maximizing visual openness. A clear frameless-style glass shower enclosure preserves sightlines from one end of the room to the other, making the footprint feel larger than it is. The coordinated with a matching dressing table, provides storage while maintaining a lighter, open appearance. Contrasting wall treatments add depth without overwhelming the space, and the warm wood ceiling draws the eye upward creating a greater sense of volume. Lighting serves as architectural features rather than a decorative afterthought. Natural lighting from a skylight and reflective surfaces enhance brightness without clutter. By minimizing bulky elements and emphasizing clean lines, the space feels bright (even though "white" is not used within the space), spacious and highly functional. Photography by Nathaniel Rolland/B Roll Media.

Krista Howard, Krista Howard Interiors As in any room, the vision starts with the needs of the client. Who in the family is using this space and how? Then the challenge becomes how to incorporate as much storage and useful space while still creating a unique environment. Small bathrooms can feel even smaller very quickly, so use strategic elements to keep the space open. If the bathroom has a tub, consider removing it and replacing it with a shower. If that is not possible, use glass doors for optimal visual depth. Install a concealed front toilet for visual seamlessness and lastly, minimize contrasting walls. A fun wallcovering is a great way to extend design on all walls and takes away the contrasting elements which create visual blocks. Photography by Anne Matheis.

Jenny Rausch, Karr Bick Kitchen and Bath When designing a small bathroom, every inch matters. The first challenge is understanding who will use the space. Is it a powder room, hall bath or primary bath? We always begin with space planning, carefully measuring the room and treating it like a puzzle, exploring as many layout options as possible. It’s a bit like solving a Rubik’s Cube, requiring a strong understanding of scale and proportion. Where many people go wrong is under-designing small spaces. Bold patterns, layered materials, wallpaper, color and personality actually make a bathroom feel larger and more memorable, not smaller. Photography by Lisa Mitchell.

design DILEMMA

Anne Marie Boeges, Anne Marie Design Studio Every successful bathroom design begins with functionality. In a smaller space, the goal is to create an environment that feels open, organized and effortless to use. Thoughtful storage solutions—such as medicine cabinets, vanity drawers, shower niches and cabinetry above the toilet—help maximize every square inch while reducing visual clutter. Photography courtesy of Anne Marie Design Studio.

Keith Gegg, Gegg Design and Cabinetry Small doesn’t mean you should give up storage for necessary paper products, soap and other items occupants and guests may need. Consider vanities that have either a drawer or door below for at least minimal storage. Designing with a legged vanity or floating vanity can also help the room feel larger and more open. To maximize the physical dimensions, consider a shallow vanity and countertop, this makes the most of limited floor space, but this does limit sink size and faucet selections. There are many small sinks available, but if even more space is needed, consider a wall mounted faucet, this minimizes the distance from the backsplash to the sink basin. Photography by Keith Gegg.

ARTIST

Intuition & Intention This local artist embraces color, pattern and texture, turning her artwork into dazzling, one-of-a-kind pieces that also blend different mediums. By Michelle Mastro Portrait photography by Karen Palmer

16 AUGUST 2026 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

Great works of art can come from merging very different things. No one knows this better than artist MaryJo Clark, who makes mixed media collages and pastel pieces and sees her work as a unique blend of not only different mediums, but diverse materials as well. Her work features botanical and architectural imagery but indulges in a hankering to add bold hues, whimsical patterns and curious textures into the fusion. For Clark, drawing has always been her first love and working in pastels feels like an extension of drawing with the added bonus of throwing painting into the mix. “I got into pastels because, for me, the medium provides the perfect blending of drawing and painting,” she says. Not only that, but the rich, vibrant colors allow for blending and layering, and the stick form of pastel provides the same tactile experience that she enjoys about the drawing process. However, though her pastel pieces are like

drawings to her, they are more representational and less abstract, she says. This is not the case for her mixed-media collages, which she sees as similar to abstract paintings but made from paper. “I particularly enjoy expressing myself through the non-objective and abstract subject matter of these pieces, which evoke unique responses from each viewer,” she says. With these collage pieces, Clark rarely starts her work with a clear intention of what a finished piece will look like. With her collages, her process is both deliberate and intuitive. She works to add, remove, layer and rework the media until the work’s composition feels both balanced and harmonious. Case in point, she is currently working on a collage piece of tulips arranged in a vase. “Like some of my other collages, the images are stylized with the focus on design over realism,” she says. “But I do know when I need to make corrections." She will work until the piece feels finished in her mind, a process that is instinctive to Clark. Art has been a part of Clark’s life since she was a child. And she doesn’t see herself forgoing it anytime soon. “I’ve always loved drawing and creating. I took art classes in high school, majored in art in college and went on to become an art teacher for 32 years,” she says. Though she's is formally retired from teaching she host occasional classes at local galleries. When not teaching, she’s a resident artist at Green Door Art Gallery in Webster Groves, a member of the St. Louis Artists Guild, a juried member of Greater

St. Louis Artists and a signature member of the National Collage Society. She’s had work accepted in juried exhibits throughout the St. Louis area, as well as other states outside of Missouri. No matter where she finds an audience she is happy it is an appreciative one. “I am always pleased when a person purchasing my work is clearly drawn to a piece. I have had buyers tell me that a piece ‘speaks to them.’” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Platinum Winner Powder Rooms

CASTLE DESIGN AND STONEHALL CABINETRY Why the judges love it: All elements of the space work in tandem with each other to keep the space looking cohesive and to scale with one another. For example, the curve of the mirror echoes the curve of the vanity, creating a smooth, soft look to match the pastel color palette.

This powder bath, sitting right off the kitchen, was reimagined to be a seamless and period-appropriate addition to the rest of the first floor and its color story. Previously utilitarian and dated, the design team sought to refresh this bathroom with fresh yet timeless elements. The surrounding wood floors were carried into the space, bold crown molding was implemented and the radiator removed. Richly-colored wallpaper covers the walls and a moody paint drenches the trim. Mixed metal finishes are like the opulent jewelry of the space. And at the focal point is a bespoke, custom walnut vanity with a decorative backsplash to add a storied feel. A fresh take on an old style, this powder bath has become a beautifully integrated part of a treasured home. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Photography by Alise O’Brien Photography.

Platinum Winner 40-90 square feet

MCCOY DESIGN STUDIO Why the judges love it: The designer was certainly successful in making the space feel light and open despite its actual size. It is in the small details that this bathroom is able to feel grand and romantic using simple and complementary materials.

When renovating this residence with strong existing original architectural character, the goal was to restore a sense of integrity while updating the spaces for modern living. This primary bath presented a particular challenge: it’s small scale. Rather than fight for more space, they leaned into it — committing fully to a dramatic material story that rewards the intimacy of the room. A classic marble field provides the foundation, while a floor-to-ceiling black marble porcelain shower with brass inlay introduces tension and contrast. The custom unlacquered brass washstand console keeps the footprint open and the space feeling curated rather than crowded. Scalloped brass mirrors and vintage-inspired pendants complete the composition. The result is a bathroom that feels like it has always belonged in this house. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Gold Winner 40-90 square feet

CASTLE DESIGN AND STONEHALL CABINETRY Why the judges love it: Each of the colors—down to the lavender paint and soft blue tiles—were expertly chosen to match the wallpaper and create stunning contrast with the darker navy accents. The judges also took note of the cabinetry, which is bespoke in its own ways with fun details like the flower-shaped pulls.

When designing the 15-year-old daughter’s bathroom, the homeowner wanted something that was youthful yet able to grow with her teen into her young adult years. Playing off the home’s moody colors, the design team decided on purples and blues to adorn the space. A vibrant but timeless wallpaper pattern provided the jumping off point for the rest of the bathroom’s design. The soft lavender vanity with chic hardware anchors the space, while soft blue tile details the shower walls, instantly elevating the bathroom while the penny tile flooring helps unify the color palette. Fresh yet timeless, playful yet poised, this bathroom is designed to mature gracefully over time. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Photography by Alise O’Brien Photography.

WINNER

Platinum Winner 100-210 square feet

ROSEWOOD and DKR DESIGNS Why the judges love it: Craftsmanship is the highlight of this bath. From the trim to the arched doorways, the woodworking is both highly functional and a major aspect of what makes this room so soft and sophisticated. This bath truly feels like a relaxing getaway that serves everyday function.

This former builder-grade bathroom was reimagined as a serene, spa-inspired retreat defined by craftsmanship, thoughtful detailing and timeless materials. Walls and ceiling are clad in delicate white zellige-look tile, adding depth, texture and a soft reflective quality while a custom double vanity with honed marble countertops anchors the space. Architectural continuity is achieved through a soaring natural white oak arched door, echoed by a custom oak beam above the freestanding soaking tub. Heated brushed marble herringbone flooring enhances comfort, while wall-mounted brass faucets, oversized brass-framed beveled mirrors and brass light switches reinforce a cohesive material story. The result is a calm, highly functional and enduring bathroom retreat. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Photography by Alise O’Brien Photography.

WINNER

Gold Winner 100-210 square feet

KRISTA HOWARD Why the judges love it: The client’s inspiration was achieved wonderfully—“she nailed it!” As a pool bathroom, the space was made to be light and fun, with functional details that support its intended purpose. The designer’s clients wanted a pool bath for their teen children and, as the client says, “their never ending stream of friends.” At a minimum, the space needed to be large enough for changing and showering. The aim was to create a bygone swim club feel, but bright and current. Starting with the playful wallcovering set the red, white and blue color palette, while the white wainscotting continues the home’s perfectly traditional lines. The flush lighting and plumbing fixtures in an unlacquered brass finish added to its authenticity. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Photography by Anne Matheis.

WINNER

Platinum Winner 250-500 square feet

JULIE REINECKE Why the judges love it: The judges appreciated the detail in assuring that the beams in the barrel ceiling mirrored the vanity cabinets. Other major highlights were the inset antique mirrors within the cabinetry and the tub setting.

When the client requested a spa-like primary bath with the emphasis on “quiet luxury” the designer knew that the choice of quality materials were essential. This newly remodeled retreat received a completely new layout that included relocating all the major necessities as well as adding a new soaking tub, steam shower, private water closet and new entry to the bedroom and walk-in closet. Gorgeous vein matched Cristallo quartzite was selected for the walls and ceiling of the all-stone steam shower. This gorgeous material was also selected for full height, backsplash and vanity, tops and half wall behind the new soaking tub. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Photography by Megan Lorenz.

CASTLE DESIGN AND ALSPAUGH KITCHEN AND BATH Why the judges love it: The judges felt that this bathroom had an elegant material palette and functionality. The floating vanity does well to maintain a sense of scale and equilibrium, while the accompanying closet brings fun personality into the space as a whole.

28 AUGUST 2026 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

Inspired by the client’s favorite spa retreats and travel destinations, the design team aimed to create a bath that conveyed a similar sense of ease and serenity. Using symmetry and form, the design uses structured lines and soft curves to create a dynamic composition. An impressive floating vanity anchors the room, introducing a modern feel to classic function. Its warm alder stain, sleek gold hardware and curved alabaster sconces pair dramatically with the exquisite Calacatta Viola on the countertop and shower threshold. The accompanying closet exudes elegant femininity; its soft pink walls, traditional floral wallpaper and a whimsical light fixture create a romantic and elevated space. The marble vanity bridges the two spaces, reinforcing a sense of continuity and cohesion. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Photography by Alise O’Brien Photography.

A SIGHT TO BEHOLD

Soon-to-retire couple builds a stunning forever home designed to capture their property’s expansive views. By Kim Hill Photography by Megan Lorenz Interior Design by Renee Stout Architecture by Schaub Projects Builder Bozich Construction

32 AUGUST 2026 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

Renee describes the home’s interior style as an “elegant rustic,” and it’s beautifully exemplified in the kitchen. She married a light color palette of sleek white cabinets and porcelain tile backsplash with warm notes from the wood baseboards, door facings and range hood trim.

STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM AUGUST 2026

33

Two priorities in building the home were storage and spaces for entertaining. The open door leads to the dirty kitchen and large pantry behind the range wall. “This was a must for me,” Renee says. “You can put all the dirty dishes from your dinner party there and the front of the kitchen is still pristine.”

BRAD AND RENEE thought they’d live in their 90-year-old Webster Groves house forever. Older homes are so full of charm and character but also typically need lots of TLC. “We put 30 piers under the house and an addition on it, and it was just a lot of work over the 36 years we lived there,” Renee says. “My husband said he was just done with all that. He wanted new construction as we were thinking about retirement.” Envisioning a custom home with expansive views where they could age in place, Renee found a large tract on land on the Eureka-Pacific border. “When we went to look at it, Brad told me not to act excited if I liked it,” Renee recalls. “I told him to squeeze my hand if he liked it. And as we were looking at the land, he squeezed my hand so hard I had to walk away because I had the biggest grin on my face. I thought the property was amazing, too. We put in an offer that night.” It was a long process from selecting the 38-acre tract to finished home. The pandemic hit soon after the couple secured the property, driving up costs and disrupting supply chains. But they persevered, working with architect David Schaub, founder and managing partner of Schaub Projects Architecture + Design, and securing builder Colton Bates of Bozich Construction. “They wanted a home where they could retire comfortably that had a rustic, mountain-lodge kind of feel,” says David. “They wanted it to be open and inviting for entertaining, yet very private for the two of them, and they wanted the house to capture the views of the valley around them as much as possible.”

34 AUGUST 2026 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

The homeowners wanted an entry that would ‘wow,’ and they got it, with expansive views from the front door through the great room and beyond. The room’s 24-foot-ceilings soar above the stone fireplace. Extensive use of wood adds rustic appeal, and the adjacent bar area is well-appointed to serve friends and family.

To take advantage of the expansive views, the couple wanted clear sight lines from the front door to the back of the home. And for Renee, the front entry had to be grand. “It was envisioned from the beginning as a big, 2-story open space that would just knock your socks off,” David says. Their wish list also included first-floor living, with the primary suite located on the main level, and space for extended stays for family and friends on the second floor. “We have a vacation home, and from that we’ve learned everyone needs their own bathroom,” Renee says. “So, there are three en suite bedrooms upstairs.” Individual home offices for each of them were also important. Working with David, whom Renee describes as “a genius,” architectural plans ultimately went through 17 revisions. “There was a lot of back and forth and a lot of owner involvement,” David says. “It was during the pandemic, nobody was building anything soon, and it just took a while for completion of the designs.”

The detailed ceiling of the walkway was the homeowner’s idea, who shared it to architect David Schaub. “The details of creating the beamed ceiling with the diamond pattern in the main walkway are really special,” David says.

36 AUGUST 2026 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

In the dining room, Renee placed a branch chandelier above the large dining set, a gift from her mother years ago. “I call this ‘glamorous rustic,’ and it marries the rustic vibe of all the wood in the house with elegance,” she says. Trim molding on the wall adds another sophisticated touch to the room. “This room turned out exactly the way I wanted it,” she says. “I love having dinner parties here.”

“We aligned the windows so that when you walk into a space, you continue your view to the outdoors,” says architect David Schaub. “From any point in the house, you have a great view, which I thought was exceptional.” Wood brings the outside in.

With architectural plans in place, Renee went to work on design. She earned a degree in interior design but never worked professionally in the field, helping family and friends instead over the years. For her own home, Renee implemented a neutral color palette that also incorporated hues found in nature—blues and greens—along with extensive use of wood for ceiling treatments, beams and natural finishes for cabinetry. The front entry, where architect David Schaub was tasked with ‘knocking your socks off,’ does just that. A visitor’s eye is drawn not only to the large windows showcasing expansive views of the rolling hills and valley, but to stunning wood ceiling treatments and rustic wood beams. “The way this space came together is really, really nice,” says David, and Renee says most of the couple’s family and friends say the entry leading into the great room and bar are fan-favorites. A quiet color palette for furnishings lets the soaring stone fireplace, rustic wood finishes and the views take visual command.

Top: Sherwin-Williams ‘Respite’ bathes the walls and woodwork in Renee’s office, where cabinetry also stores playthings for the couple’s two-year-old granddaughter. The rabbit accessories are cherished gifts from Renee’s mother. Left: “I wanted something really special and fun in the pool bathroom, and when I saw this wallpaper, I knew that was it,” says Renee. “It’s my favorite element in the house.”

One example is lighting. “I am obsessed with chandeliers,” she says. “They are the jewelry of the house, and I wanted them to be showstoppers.” She accompanied her longtime friend, Patti Porter of Rusted Chandelier, to the Dallas Market Center to visit the showrooms. Ultimately, Renee selected light fixtures that mimic natural elements such as branches or waterfalls. “In my office, for example, there is an acrylic fixture that looks like antlers,” Renee says. “In the dining room, I picked a chandelier that looks like a branch with raindrops coming from it.” The dining room is her favorite room, she says. She added trim detail to the walls to complement the traditionally minded dining set, which Renee’s mother obtained years ago. Modern wall sconces and the chandelier add a contemporary flair to the space. In the more private spaces of the home, such as her office and the bathroom serving those using the pool, she introduced vivid hues. “I had to have some color,” she says. “I just couldn’t live in a house where the whole thing was in a neutral. It was a bit of a challenge to add color and fun in places to the neutrals and make it work.” Challenge accepted and exceeded. In her office, Renee bathed walls and woodwork in Sherwin-Williams “Respite,” a cool hue with cerulean undertones. “It’s actually now my office/preschool because I watch our 2-year-old granddaughter two days a week,” Renee says. “The cabinets are full of her stuff, but my little treasures are still on the shelves.” And in the pool bathroom, a graphic blue wallpaper exudes joy. “This is my favorite element in the house,” Renee says. “I knew I wanted something really special in the pool bath and when I saw this paper, I knew that was it.” She says their priorities in building the home were comfort, storage, entertaining and getting the best views of the property. “We feel we knocked it out of the park,” she says. “We love our home and plan on leaving feet first, as they say.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.

Opposite page: The primary bedroom’s soothing neutral color palette is warmed by the wood ceiling. “The use of wood throughout the house was a very deliberate choice,” says Renee. “The interiors had to be cohesive with the exterior, which is kind of a Montana-rustic style.” This page left: Renee found a console with a deer motif and had it made into a vanity for this powder room. “Then I showed Sue Greene (owner of Paint Imagery) a piece of wallpaper I liked and asked her to paint this room,” Renee says. “She did an amazing job, like always.”

A St. Louis mother-daughter design team transforms a 1980s townhouse into a maximalist masterpiece. Opposite page: Black barstools and red lamp shades set a moody, sophisticated tone, showcasing a bar area where Art Deco sensibility flirts with the dramatic. Above: A teal wall, crimson drapes and a layered mix of pattern and texture reflect the maximalist philosophy that Shirley and Katie have made their signature.

Sometimes the universe has a way of allowing us to discover something for which we really weren’t looking. Such is the case for Shirley Strom and her husband, David, who purchased a stunning three-story townhouse in St. Louis’s Central West End. “We had no intentions of buying,” Shirley emphasizes. The couple was already happily settled in their 1,200-squarefoot apartment just a few blocks away. What started as a daily afternoon walk together turned into an unexpected, yet equally exciting, new adventure. As self-professed open house tour enthusiasts, the Stroms took a detour on one of those weekly walks and discovered this 5,100-square-foot beauty built in 1980. From the moment they crossed its threshold, a new chapter began to unfold. “If you go to the Humane Society often enough, you’re going to come home with a puppy,” smiles Shirley, recalling a friend’s analogy to Shirley’s frequent open house visits. Despite having no plans to move, she and David fell for the home’s Art Deco fireplace and its unusual architectural bones. What really shaped the trajectory of this open house visit was David’s usual reluctance to think twice about another home, which gave way to agreeing to take a second look. Before long, the couple made an offer. Shirley is one half of S&K Interiors, the St. Louis design firm she has operated for 15 years. Before joining the business, her daughter, Katie Marvin, worked at a Paul Mitchell school in the Central West End. Katie would watch her mom pour her creative energy into one client’s space

after another and soon recognized both her own passion for design and the potential to grow the business into something even bigger. So, in 2011, she joined Shirley and has ambitiously helped build the firm’s online presence. The home had not been updated in decades, and what greeted the Stroms was a sea of light gray walls and shag-style carpeting. Their plan was simple: just pull up the old carpet and install hardwood floors throughout the main level. Then came the surprise. Underneath that worn carpet was the original poured-concrete subfloor, so badly crumbled that flooring installers refused to lay an inch of hardwood over it. A crew was brought in, however, to jackhammer out the damaged concrete, cutting a hole through the great room floor so debris could be dropped directly into a dumpster in the garage below. The timing could not have been worse, either, as the walls had already been freshly painted. “That was quite upsetting,” Shirley recalls of all the dust and grime that followed. Grace Construction, the contractor they have relied on for roughly a decade, oversaw the cleanup and restoration. The couple moved in that February, and two years later, the home is roughly 90 percent complete, with two bathrooms still on the to-do list. “I will keep tweaking it,” Shirley says, noting she changes things as

often as moving a lamp or swapping pillows between rooms. The townhouse holds four bedrooms and four bathrooms across its expansive footprint, along with four separate living rooms, a layout that still intrigues Shirley, given the couple’s previous one-bedroom apartment. A lower level functions as a guest suite with its own living space, though Shirley has not yet finished decorating it. With so much square footage to fill, she admits they have not gotten around to using every room regularly. The mother-daughter duo describes the home’s aesthetic as maximalism, layered with touches of Art Deco. Bold color, patterns and textures take the place of neutral palettes Shirley once favored. Animal print has long been a signature style. However, Shirley has recently branched out into oversized floral patterns. Once far more committed to a more neutral palette, such as creams, light browns and safer tones, Shirley approached her new home as a turning point of sorts, one that can be traced back to a previous residence where she had already begun experimenting with bolder choices. Once she crossed that line, she never looked back. The rich, jewel-toned walls that now anchor each room, including a blue teal that commands one’s attention, feel less like a design decision and more like Shirley’s destination has been reached.

As for the furnishings, they came from a variety of sources. “You can do a mix of high-end and economy and still achieve a beautiful look,” she notes. “Not everything has to be extremely expensive.” For homeowners who want to embrace more color and vibrancy within their homes, Katie has simple advice: go small first. She often encourages clients to pick a single, low-stakes space, like a powder room, and commit to something more dramatic there before tackling larger rooms. It’s a philosophy that plays out even in her own life, where she said she and her mother will call each other for input on decorating decisions, no matter how minor. Shirley agreed that once a bold choice is in place, there is rarely a desire to undo it. “Then everything else looks bland,” she emphasizes. A favorite spot for Shirley in her new home is the primary suite, with its adjoining library. “It has a bit more of an intimate feeling,” she says. Katie chose a different room entirely: the second-floor library and breakfast nook that sits at the midpoint between the home’s upper floors. “I almost feel like that library is the heart of the home,” Katie adds. It is where the family gathers, where her mother is often found in her favorite chair, and where a simple phone call across floors becomes an invitation: “Come downstairs. Meet me in the library.”

Living with an interior designer means having your home regularly transformed into a more beautiful, livable and functional space. —David

David expressed that life in a designer’s home is anything but static. “Living with an interior designer means having your home regularly transformed into a more beautiful, livable and functional space,” he says. “What Shirley and Katie have done with our home continues to delight and amaze me, as they use our house as a laboratory to try out new colors, fabrics and furniture. Some days it is hard to decide where we should spend our time because there are so many great spaces.” For Shirley, the greatest reward is not the finished room but the moment a hesitant client commits to something bold and realizes the walls did not cave in as a result. Plus, in a home such as this that playfully invites a second look and where each room tells its own story, returning to beige will never really be an option. “I can’t see us going back to anything neutral,” she reflects. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.

DESIGNER TIP

Katie Marvin, S&K Interiors

You Don't Have to Remodel Everything. One of the biggest misconceptions homeowners have is that a home only feels cohesive if every room is brand new. There can be great design which creates harmony, even when not every space is renovated. When a kitchen isn't being remodeled, the surrounding rooms become even more important. By carefully selecting paint colors, lighting, furnishings and architectural details throughout the adjoining spaces, an existing kitchen can feel refreshed and naturally integrated into the home's overall design.

ita Diekemper describes it as a “hobby gone crazy.” Others might describe it as gardening genius. In her own one-acre Frontenac garden, hydrangeas, boxwoods and viburnums anchor many of the landscaping beds where dogwoods, redbuds and colorful, red-leaved Japanese maples provide height. Majestic oaks, highlighted by mulched surrounds, become part of the landscaping design. Hydrangeas are a particular favorite due to their adaptability to both sun and shade and the wide variety of sizes and bloom times. Her collection includes native ‘Annabelle,’ ‘Sike’s Dwarf’ oakleaf, ‘Pee Wee’ dwarf oakleaf, long-blooming Endless Summer and earlyblooming ‘Quick Fire’ hydrangeas. A groundcover of Chinese astilbe ‘Pumila’ with spikey, pale pink blossoms takes center stage, adding architectural interest from May through August. Thriving in part to full

shade, it works well amidst the oaks and hydrangeas. In sun-kissed areas Rita includes natives such as the spring blooming, blue spikes of native baptisia with its shrub-like gray-green foliage, later blooming plumes of purple lythrum and iris inherited from her grandfather’s garden. Pale blue Stoke’s aster or Stokesia, native to the southeastern United States, is another favorite. “It begins blooming sporadically in late spring but is prized for the mid-summer and fall show,” she says. “Its floral mounds are a favorite stopping point for pollinators. It is wonderful as a cut flower and a great, drought tolerant plant for native and wildflower plantings.” Annual zinnias add seasonlong shots of color in landscaping beds. Around her pool and patio, brilliant tropicals such as cannas, hibiscuses, oleanders and lantanas fill pots and add to the gardening show. While what Rita does in her own garden is

enough to gain acclaim, it is what she does in other people’s gardens for which she is best known. As the founder of Gardens of Grace, she, along with longtime partner Craig Schrock, oversees a staff of 30 that design, install and maintain gardens. With a degree in accountancy from the University of Missouri, she left a career as a Certified Public Account 30 years ago to begin a landscaping business. “I started working in my yard and just loved it,” she recalls. “I had friends who said, ‘I love what you’ve done. Can you help me?’ My husband says I ran out of room in our yard and had to start working in friends’ yards.” "One of my friends said I should start a business," she remembers. “I hung out at nurseries a lot but when I got into it (the idea of starting a business) I realized I needed more knowledge, so I went to Meramec (Community College) and got a degree in horticulture.” The name of the firm came from her desire to have a title that sounded feminine and Grace is the name of her youngest daughter. Rita started small, basically doing garden design. “One of my designs was for this woman and afterwards, her son called me and said, ‘I installed my mom’s garden. Can I get a job with you?’”

54 JUNE/JULY 2026 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

The partnership has proved to be a good one. “I was a little more relaxed. He had a little more enthusiasm,” she says of Craig Schrock, who has studied horticulture at both Meramec Community College and the Missouri Botanical Garden. He specializes in landscape design, estimating, lighting and installation of custom designed landscapes, patios and walls. Rita handles design, plant selection, maintenance, supervision and client service. The partnership is now in its 20th year and has 30 employees. Gardens of Grace continues to work with the Meramec horticulture program to hire graduates and help them to turn horticulture into a profession. Both Rita and Craig have continued with their own landscaping education. Rita is a Certified Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture and a certified pesticide applicator. Craig is a certified NCMS installer for the installation of Versa-Lok retaining walls and a certified ICPI installer by the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute. The company is a member of the Landscape & Nursery Association of Greater St. Louis and Rita is treasurer of the group. “Another aspect of the plant industry is that you are always learning something new,” Rita says. “There are thousands of plants. There is no way you can learn about all of them but every day, you learn something new. I visit five nurseries regularly looking for what is most striking.” Whether working on her own landscape or designing for others, it is important to have a master plan, Rita emphasizes. “It is important to pull the landscaping out and away from the house to give it room to spread out. You want to frame the house, but

you don’t want to be pruning things all the time. For the first four years we lived here, we implemented the design,” she says, noting that creating a beautiful landscape requires the patience to let things grow and fill out. “Now, we tweak it. You’re never finished.” Dealing with struggling large trees has been one of her biggest challenges. “The Metropolitan Sewer District had done a large project nearby that led to the death of a number of oak trees," she explains, noting that she is working with Metropolitan Forestry Services to preserve the remaining oaks. In addition she is adding new, young trees to her landscape including oaks and native black gum/black tupelo trees. Renowned for spectacular red-orange fall color, black gums are adaptable to a variety of conditions and are important to a variety of ecosystems, supporting over 200 varieties of moths and butterflies. Succession planting is important, she points out. “I have large oak trees because 75 years ago, someone planted them. “If you are designing or maintaining a property” she continues, “you need to have good

communication with the clients. When you have good communication, you can really zero in on what clients like and make better decisions. Some people may want natives for pollinators, and some people want a more refined look. They can’t tolerate too much messiness.” Another important consideration, she points out, is “understanding how they use both the outside and inside of their house; how things flow. Most people view their landscape from inside their house. You have to know what their views are when they look out of their windows. “It is really hard work,”Rita says of landscaping. “But you make people happy. As a CPA, it felt like no one really liked you. In this job you’re outside and you are working with nature. At the end of the day, you can see exactly what you have done.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.

Bountiful Bamboo Learn about the variations of bamboo and how to incorporate them into your garden! By Lily Stassi

60 AUGUST 2026 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

If you know anything about bamboo, you may be intimidated by the thought of introducing it to your garden. Bamboo is notorious for being an aggressive spreader that can get out of hand quickly. The truth of this is that while many types of bamboo are fast spreaders, not all are equally so. There is an entire category of bamboo known for its tendency to spread slowly, while still growing at a fast pace vertically. Additionally, there are lots of variations that do not thrive in the Midwest climate and can grow more slowly as a result. Bamboo can be a huge benefit to the garden as a natural privacy screen or as a way to prevent soil erosion on sloped areas. There are two main types of bamboo— clumping sympodial and running sympodial. The primary difference is the way the bamboo’s rhizomes, or underground stems, spread. “Clumping” means that the rhizomes only grow in a u-shaped direction upwards, therefore spreading only a few inches a year. The rhizomes of “running” bamboo spread horizontally and are typically extremely

Pleioblastus chino.

hardy. Running bamboo tends to make great groundcover or natural fencing but certainly needs more maintenance than its clumping versions. A minimum of bi-annual root pruning is the most effective method for keeping running bamboo in check. A great clumping bamboo option that thrives in the midwest is the Fargesia. Bamboo within this family are cold tolerant and can grow nearly anywhere in the U.S., and do not spread more than 4-6 inches per year. Fargesia make great hedges with foliage that stays green year-round and get to about 8-16 feet tall. They prefer mostly shade but can handle some direct sunlight. Some variations can produce beautiful colors in their prime growing season and location. Fargesia sp. 'Jiuzhaigou IX' and Fargesia robusta 'Campbell' are a few great choices! For those willing to put in a little extra effort, there are numerous types of running bamboo types such as timber and groundcover bamboos for variation. Phyllostachys vivax, or Chinese Timber Bamboo, is one of

the hardiest and largest bamboo types that have been known to survive in the U.S. In perfect conditions, Chinese Timber bamboo has been known to grow to 70 feet tall and 5 inches in diameter. With beautiful silvery stalks and bushy leaves that grow near the tops of the culms, this plant can serve a similar purpose in your garden as trees! In terms of groundcover bamboos, Pleioblastus chino 'Variegatus is one of the most unique options, with long and slender variegated leaves that create an elegant hedge. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Pleioblastus pygmaeus is solid green and one of the smallest bamboo varieties. This dwarf bamboo is popularly used in bonsai. While bamboo certainly has a reputation for being an aggressive spreader, it’s important to know that this habit does not apply to all bamboo variations. Whether you are looking to add color, height, groundcover or privacy to your garden, there are so many bamboo types that are suitable for the Midwest.

Barn Raising Extensive, thoughtful renovation elevates a former equestrian structure into an entertaining space extraordinaire. By Kim Hill Photography Miranda Kimberlin Interior Design Srote & Co Architects Architect D.L. Design Builder Kemp Signature Homes

64 AUGUST 2026 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

Even the builder wasn’t sure what could be done with a barn that had once been part of an equestrian estate in Town and Country. “It wasn’t fully dilapidated, but it needed a lot of TLC,” says builder Bill Kemp. The Kemp Company owned the two-acre lot where the barn sat, and Bill never envisioned a new owner might want to keep the structure. But the couple who bought the lot to build their dream home trusted Bill and his team to create something magical from the bones of the old building. “When you walked into the barn, there was really nothing there,” Bill recalls. “A dirt floor, some stalls for horses and a low ceiling. But when you walked up to the second floor, the ceilings were probably 20 feet high, and there was all this exposed wood in a unique, awesome space that you couldn’t see from the ground.” Architect Darryl Labruyere, founder of D.L.

Design, had the idea to remove part of the second-story floor and add an elaborate, open staircase to visually expand the space. “His great idea for a layout included incorporating the second story into a lounge area and doing a bar on the main floor,” says Bill. The new owners, particularly the wife, were enthralled with the barn’s possibilities. “She was very, very enthusiastic about it,” says Bill. “When we hit on the idea of renovating the barn, she came back with tons of photos of party barns.” One photo featured a mechanical window that tilted out, allowing walk-up service for guests. “We thought this was a neat idea and Bill agreed,” says the wife. As plans progressed, Bill says the proposed project received tremendous support from neighbors and community leaders. “You couldn’t build a structure like that today because of zoning and setback requirements,

so it was a lot of back-and-forth discussion with city planners at Town and Country, explaining what we wanted to do and the process,” says Bill. “Everyone at those meetings was just so positive about preserving this structure.” One of his team’s greatest challenges was replacing sections of old wood with new material that would blend seamlessly. “Raw wood had aged over the years from

sun exposure,” says Bill. “Our painters came up with a great stain to blend the new wood with the old. Getting that right to make it look like one cohesive structure was a challenge, and I think we executed that really well.” He says elements of the new home were carried into the barn’s renovation, including the use of black windows, metal roof accents and the color of the siding. “It’s very cohesive with the overall property and doesn’t stick

out as an outlier,” says Bill. “And the overall shape of the original barn was maintained.” The renovated barn has already served as the venue for family birthday parties, school dance photos and other milestone events. “It’s turned out to be everything we could imagine,” says the wife. “I think we were the right people to save it.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Trusting the Vision A homeowner in The Grove took on the role of interior designer in her 120-year-old kitchen remodel. By Maya Brenningmeyer Photography by Rob Grimm Renovations by RND Renovations

68 AUGUST 2026 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

Homeowner Audrey McAlinden went into the renovation process with a clear vision and endless inspiration. Tackling the challenge of orchestrating a full gut renovation of her 120-year-old kitchen, she was looking to upgrade her space to be more functional while incorporating her personal style and aesthetic. “The vision was to create a sense of increased space within the small kitchen area without major changes to the overall template or layout,” says Audrey. Looking for the perfect teammate for the project, Audrey hired Rick Detling-Nusser of RND Renovations following a friend’s recommendation. “I am often asked to build within the current trends and styling, which look fantastic, but can become repetitive and ‘cookie-cutter’ as a busy contractor,” Rick says. “It was a treat and reprieve to work with Audrey and build something that is truly a one-of-a-kind.” To create this truly unique space, some major changes had to be made to the original kitchen. A non-supporting beam between the kitchen and dining room was removed, and soffits were eliminated to allow for taller wall cabinets. To increase storage, the size of the peninsula was increased, and Audrey opted for a smaller 18” dishwasher to allow for an extra cabinet and drawer.

Before

“Starting from a blank slate gave me the opportunity to really add my own personal style and aesthetic to the space,” says Audrey. “I decided to be the interior designer for the project and, while it was a lot of work in terms of research and sourcing products, it was a very enjoyable and positive experience.” Drawing inspiration from nature, the cabinets are covered in Peale Green by Benjamin Moore, a calming, natural green. “Since I enjoy working and relaxing in my back garden, the concept of having a ‘green kitchen’ was an appealing and lovely way to connect the two spaces,” she says. Aged brass cabinet hardware from deVOL Kitchens adds a sparkle to the space and ties in nicely with the art deco-inspired backsplash. Graniterra, a local company, assisted with ordering and installing the porcelain countertops that add a practical, neutral design element to the space. A Fossil Blu farmhouse sink and white-washed oak floating shelves by Urbandi bring additional functionality to the kitchen and offer a unique blend of styles. “I enjoy experimenting with different styles and weaving them together within a defined space,” Audrey mentions. Drawing inspiration from art deco and farmhouse designs, vintage pieces and modern and mid-century modern decor, she created a kitchen aesthetic that was completely unique to her personal style. “Working with Audrey was ideal as a contractor,” says Rick. “Audrey had a well-thought-out vision for this space and was able to effectively communicate that vision to me before we started and during the project. When you work with an individual who has a vision and has done the research, it allows me as the contractor to stay focused on executing that vision.” Additionally, Audrey speaks highly of Rick and the help he provided. “It was truly a pleasure to work with Rick Detling throughout the three and half month project,” she says. “He took the time to understand what I wanted to create and laid out a reasonable and transparent work plan.” When asked about her favorite feature in her new kitchen, Audrey can’t decide. “I personally love the way everything blends and flows together well,” she says. “It brings me joy every day. I’m grateful to Rick and his team for turning my vision into reality and, importantly, my cats are delighted with their new space.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Get inspired by these outstanding bathrooms with unique bathtubs! Edited by Lily Stassi

Linsey Dunn Architecture Designed as a calming retreat, this primary bathroom balances clean architectural lines with a warm, natural material palette. Honed limestone flooring, white oak cabinetry, creamy quartzite countertops and brushed brass fixtures create a layered sense of texture. A freestanding soaking tub framed by expansive windows anchors the space and enhances its spa-likeness. Photography Courtesy of Linsey Dunn Architecture. Caroline Brackett Design The elegance of this lake house master bathroom is elevated by the brass-finished tub, which commands attention as a luxurious focal point that anchors the space. Its unique reflective finish offers a striking contrast to the organic texture of the grasscloth wallpaper, but it also beautifully echoes the coordinating hardware throughout the space, a testament to thoughtful, cohesive design with an unexpected flair. BRIGHT IDEA

Kendall Wilkinson Design The inspiration began with the setting, an expansive property in Northern California, and the view of nature's majesty just beyond the glass. Everything was designed to draw that serenity inward, beginning with the tactility of the stone. Hand carved from a single slab of onyx and weighing nearly 800 pounds, the faceted tub reads like one giant gemstone, and once you settle in, the stone closes around you and holds the warmth of the bath. The floors were reinforced to carry it and the room was built entirely around it, all in service of one idea, making your own home the best spa on earth. Photography by Paul Dyer. Saint Dizier Design This bathroom, in a home on the Kohala Coast of Hawaii, was inspired by Balinese architecture, integrating the garden and the interior. The copper tub sits in a bed of polished black quartzite stones. Photography by Mary E. Nichols.

Despite the unique architectural and sculptural value they can add to a bathroom, it seems that there are a few caveats—finding the correct faucet to match and functional preferences. Kerry Staley, Hamtil Construction Vessel sinks continue to hold their place as a standout feature in bathroom design, transforming an everyday necessity into a striking focal point. Whether crafted from rugged natural stone for a bold, masculine aesthetic or hand-blown glass for a sleek contemporary feel, these sculptural fixtures bring personality and artistry into the space. More than just a place to wash up, a bathroom with a distinctive vessel sink becomes an experience that reflects style, craftsmanship and individuality. Barbara Collins, Barbara Collins Interior Design Bowl sinks have been used since ancient times. They are practical and versatile. They can be made from a variety of materials, such as ceramic porcelain, copper, stainless steel, stone or concrete. They are ideal for custom applications, such as transforming a piece of furniture into a vanity or a wash station. They remain a functional choice and a classic design element.

Teddy Karl, The Great Cover Up I definitely see bowl sinks as a craze. They are fun and different. I, however, have been duped by a badly chosen faucet style/ height with a bowl sink. No one wants to be soaked by the splash of an over exuberant faucet/bowl combination. I have faith the novelty will wear off. Rebekah Murphy, Murphy & Moore Design A vessel sink can be fabulous when treated as part of the architecture of the vanity. The strongest applications are usually in powder rooms or bathrooms where the sink can create a sculptural moment. In high-use bathrooms, carefully consider the proportions, faucet placement, splash control and cleaning around the base. To me, vessel sinks are not inherently classic or craze - the “bowl on a counter” look can feel dated, but a thoughtfully integrated vessel sink in the right material, scale, and setting can still feel timeless and architectural and enduring.
