Sophisticated Giving, Presented by Kentucky Select Properties: Down Syndrome of Louisville

Founded by the late Mary Carter, a local educator who successfully modified traditional education to meet the needs of individuals with Down syndrome; Down Syndrome of Louisville has been supporting, educating, and advocating for individuals with Down syndrome and their families since 1977.

Today, Down Syndrome of Louisville offers over 50 programs and services to the 1,200+ individuals in the Kentuckiana area with Down syndrome through their lifelong learning programs; and is the only organization in the world to hold the prestigious Gold level certification from the Down Syndrome Affiliates In Action.

Lifelong Learning program member Drew Dever, who began attending DSL as an infant is one of the many members who have excelled socially, educationally, and gained new levels of independence as a result of his involvement at Down Syndrome of Louisville. “I love Down Syndrome of Louisville, my job, hanging out with my friends and chilling with my girlfriend,” said Drew. Down Syndrome of Louisville is tasked with raising more than one million dollars a year to support the programs and services they currently offer.

As a leader in the Down syndrome community, creating new programs and opportunities for the individuals we serve is a top priority - and that is where the support of our community comes in. We need others challenging the norms and becoming changemakers to reach our full potential.” said Development Director, Nicole Volz.
