Current Measurement Methods that Deliver High Precision Power Analysis in the Field of Power Electronics

By Hajime Yoda, Assistant Chief Engineer, Hiroki Kobayashi, Assistant Chief Engineer and Shinya Takiguchi, Senior Staff, Hioki E.E. Corporation

3.2 Overall Optimization of Power Measurement Systems Including Current Sensors Simply selecting a suitable current sensor as described above is not a sufficient condition for high-precision power measurement using the current sensor method. In addition, it is necessary to optimize the entire power measurement system, including the current sensor. Even if the current sensor detects the target current with an exceptionally high degree of precision, it will be impossible to measure the current with a similarly high degree of precision if the sensor’s output signal is degraded before reaching the power analyzer. Fig. 4 illustrates a typical power measurement system that includes a current sensor. As described above, some current sensors generate current output, while others generate voltage output. Since currentoutput sensors are more commonly used than voltage-output sensors, this discussion will assume use of a current-output sensor. The following conditions must be satisfied in order to ensure that the current sensor’s output signal can be transmitted to the power analyzer without degradation. i) A high-quality power supply must be used for the sensor, and it must be properly grounded. ii) Coupling capacitance between multiple cables and between cables and ground must be low, and the noise resistance of the cables must be high. iii) The power analyzer’s current inputs must offer good frequency characteristics with little heating and high insulation performance (high CMRR and low leak current). In addition, the instrument must provide high noise resistance, and it must be properly grounded. 6

In general, power is measured with current sensors, a power supply to drive the sensors, and a power analyzer that are all from different manufacturers, and the cable type as well as wiring method are dependent on the user’s discretion. In light of this, it goes without saying that it is extremely difficult for current sensor manufacturers, power analyzer manufacturers, and sensor power supply manufacturers to guarantee that all of the conditions listed above will be satisfied for any given setup, that the current sensor’s output signal will reach the power analyzer without suffering degradation, and that the target current will in fact be measured at a high level of precision.

Noise

An optimum power measurement system should provide the following features: i) The use of voltage-output current sensors for which accuracy has been defined across the entire measurable frequency band. ii) The power analyzer’s current inputs are designed specifically for use with voltage-output current sensors, and both sensor output voltage levels and input voltage levels for power analyzer’s current inputs have been optimized. iii) The power analyzer has a built-in sensor power supply that drive the sensors with power with a quality identical to that of the current sensors, Continued on page 8

Introducing EZ BOX Electrical Systems Solutions, LLC

By Marcus Liubakka, CMO & Vice President of Operations at EZ BOX Electrical Systems Solutions, LLC

T

WO YEARS AGO, Glenn Liubakka; the founder and CEO of EZ BOX Electrical Systems Solutions, LLC; was working on a home improvement pro-

ject when a peculiar idea from his childhood came rushing back to his consciousness. An idea so elegantly simple, it seems appropriate to learn that it came from the boundless imagination of a child. As a kid, Glenn spent his summers building houses with his dad and brothers in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. As the youngest of eight kids, his four older brothers often left him with the “busy” work, like mounting the outlet and switch boxes. It was a tedious and cumbersome task that nobody wanted to do, which led Glenn to think, “since we have to drill holes in the studs to route the wire, somebody should make a box with a tube on the side that mounts by popping the tube through the stud hole”. Little did Glenn know, that “somebody” would be him. Five decades later, his simple concept is now a reality. He’s working with his two sons: Tanner Liubakka (CBDO & President

of Sales) and Marcus Liubakka (CMO & VP of Operations) in the Pine Innovation Center, which is part of a joint-venture incubator program between the Pine City Board of Economic Development and Pine Technical & Community College, in Pine City, MN. After creating his “proof-of-concept” prototypes, an immense amount of time was spent researching the industry. The time spent learning about the electrical industry helped Glenn optimize his current design, and create additional products which work together as a system, which not only saves time for electricians, but also creates safety for the end-user. Often, the simplest innovations make the largest impact on an industry. With 17 products protected under patent pending status, the Liubakkas have developed simple solutions to complex issues looming over the electrical industry, which Continued on page 14

installers, as you can add or subtract a box as you are working to make changes on the fly. Stacking boxes together creates a natural barrier to allow for high and low voltage in one assembly. Purchasers will appreciate only having to track one part number in their inventory rather than a part number for every box size.

ez Guard

The ez Guard is a wire protector placed in every stud-hole where a wire passes through. It is very similar to the tube on the ez Mount system, however, it is designed specifically for stud-holes which do not require a box. Its steel jacket provides 360-degree protection from a drillbit, nail, screw, etc. The internal plastic has smooth, rounded edges to prevent damage to the wire when it is being pulled through the studs. The ez Guard comes in multiple lengths to fully protect the entire length of wire passing through multiple studs fastened together. ez Guide

The ez Guide drill fixture assembly is used to guide drills to the correct height and depth for stud-hole-mounted switch and outlet boxes. It assists the user in drilling a hole in the perfect spot, so a box can be mounted according to standard code heights. It also provides a perfectly straight wire path, which will save the contractor money on wasted wire caused by drilling stud holes at inconsistent heights. There are two different ez Guide products. A handheld model, and a contractorgrade model. The handheld model acts as a plastic stencil, with a one-inch diameter circle placed at the correct depth. Most tape measuring and laser measuring devices can be fastened to it, which allows a worker to simply set their measuring device Continued on page 16

at the desired height, place the handheld ez Guide on to the stud, and drill through the hole. The contractor grade is similar to the handheld guide, less the need for a measuring device, because of the added features. The contractor guide is mounted to a leg which has detents to allow the contractor to easily adjust between outlet and switch heights, but it also contains a graduated inch scale, for locking the guide to any desired custom height. At the top, the “stencil” clamps to both sides of the stud by squeezing its handle, which also contains a quick-release lever to effortlessly move from stud to stud. Attached to the clamping stencil, is a right-angle drill head attached in between two parallel horizontal ways. So, all one needs to do, is chuck any drill to the right-angle drill head, set the desired height (usually by detent), clamp onto the stud, drill the hole by sliding the drill across the horizontal ways, quick release, and move on to the next stud.

Multiple Products for Multiple Markets The four products previously described, are innovations designed specifically for the residential/stick-built market of the electrical industry. These products work together as a system to simplify the electrical installation process, so you can complete your jobs quicker, all while improving the safety of the end user. EZ BOX has 13 more products under patent pending status which improve efficiency and safety, not only for residential construction, but concrete and steel stud construction as well. In case you are wondering, yes, you will soon be able to mount a box to a steel stud or rigid conduit without the use of tools. Every product EZ BOX creates is designed to eliminate the need for tools, improve efficiency, and improve safety to the end user. Due to the nature of a start-up manufacturing business, it is not feasible to launch all 17 products at once. Keep an eye out for more exciting products to come:

Net Zero USA N

et Zero USA was created under the parent company, Solar Energy USA, to assist businesses in reducing their fixed operating costs through energy reduction. While Solar Energy USA went to market using solar arrays to create energy for the consumer, Net Zero USA was created to reduce energy consumption in tandem with solar. What many partners in the network found was that with or without solar, energy reduction through proper lighting solutions was a great model for any market. Net Zero USA is a lighting manufacturer who supplies a national network of decentralized small business owners and operators that manage and support their local markets. This alliance is supported by a centralized technical support center that creates designs, financial proposals, online market presence, product sourcing, continual training and national financial partnerships to support network sales. retrofits and lighting conversions. We provide these solutions for major manufacturing and warehousing, as well as commercial, industrial, institutional, government, and military facilities. In today’s industrial and commercial business environment operating costs usually determine the health and viability of a company. The bottom line is affected by labor, material, and power costs. Historically, low energy prices and lack of foreign competition have enabled American industry to flourish with little resistance. Today, however, is a very different arena for American businesses. Labor and material costs are constantly scrutinized to the penny to ensure the profitability and success of a company. The cost to create and deliver energy has caused power prices to rise at an unprecedented rate and has become a major factor in decreasing a business’s profit margins. “Net Zero USA exists to serve our customers in understanding, controlling, and improving power consumption and inefficiencies.” Quote from Net Zero

Electrical Products & Solutions • August 2016

USA President, Perry Bell. What we’ve learned through our successes and experiences is that there is not just one lighting technology or solution that is perfect for all applications. Energy efficiency has become an economic model and energy efficient lighting conversion is an economic sale, characterized as the “low hanging fruit.” This really is the most cost effective solution for most businesses to realize substantial and immediate savings that go directly back to their bottom line. Our target licensee or business partner is an existing lighting, electrical, commercial contractor or solar company that needs to improve their existing model for themselves and for their customers. Brian Lawrence, VP of Business Development says, “We have a comprehensive product line and support mechanism that is second to none.” To learn more about Net Zero USA and what they have to offer, you can visit this company on their website: www.netzero-usa.com. ❏

Miller Safety Consultants

Protect Yourself Miller Safety Consultants — A Leader in Arc Flash Protection

V

ince Miller started Miller Safety Consultants, a veteran owned

business in 1999. The goal of the business was to provide cost effective safety consulting, employee training such as: confined space entry, fall protection, electrical safety and provide sales of electrical shock and flash protective equipment and fall protection equipment to businesses in the Washington DC area. Reliance Industries provided fall protection products and much of the sales and training was on behalf of the supplier. In 2000, the owner decided to retire from his business, and Vince decided to discontinue the fall protection line of his business and concentrate more in the electrical training and products. Vince had been a distributor for Certified Insulated Products (CIP), a manufacturer of electrical insulated tools and electrical arc flash clothing manufactured by Otex in Rochester, New York. As a distributor, Vince provided sales through his internet website and much through relationships with electrical contractors. His training was a classroom 22

environment and was provided directly to customers but he also taught as a subcontractor for other safety consulting companies and the Chesapeake Safety Council in Baltimore, Maryland. In 2005, Vince partnered with Vivid Learning Systems in Cascades, Washington to provide on-line training in safe work practices. Training in electrical safe work practices is still provided locally in the

Washington DC area and as a partner with an electrical engineering firm and online. The training is based on the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) standards and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70E standard. Miller Safety Consultants is now a distributor for Cementex USA, Burlington, New Jersey, for insulated tools and equipment and clothing from OTEX Protective, Rochester, New York. The majority of his sales of products are from the web-based store. Cementex is nationally known for their quality equipment. Otex Protective is becoming more known for their quality clothing. For years, they have manufactured their products under other provider labels. Vince chose to not create his clothing line, but to sell the manufacturer product. Vince has worked with many electrical company employees to fine-tune the clothing to be more comfortable for the user. Working closely with the manufacturer, they have made slight changes in how the cloth pattern was modified to meet final production. An example is the lightweight 40 Calary vented hood offered by Otex. The material is of the latest technology. The vented assembly is constructed for balance on the back of the hardhat and the airflow is 35 CFM to prevent fogging of the face shield and provide cooling to the worker. It took over a year to develop the product with the user prior to having the hood “flash tested”. This product is now standard issue with many electrical contractors. Being a small business and having quality providers has resulted in satisfied customers for Miller Safety Consultants. Being a direct supplier for OTEX Protective, another small business means customized customer needs can be met. ❏
