Craft Beer Breweries - The Publican House Brewery

The Publican House Brewery is a Family owned brewing company that is now 10 years in operation. With the Brewery, Retail Store and Brew Pub nestled in the heart of downtown Peterborough, it is a must stop for craft beer and culinary lovers throughout the Kawarthas. I met up with Kim Cranfield, Director of Marketing to talk about the business.

Marty Laskaris, brother Mike, nephew Matt Phillips and family friend Rick Coit have created an award winning brewing company. Marty and his brotherin-law, who were both interested in craft beer, saw it as an emerging business and were interested in pursuing a path that few had taken. Kawartha Lakes Brewing had already started production, so an impromptu meeting was set up with their owner, and over a couple of beers they decided to go ahead in this very new industry. The Publican House was the 42nd craft brewery to open in Ontario and now there are over 300. With the help of Kawartha Lakes Brewing, some of the initial recipes were developed. Marty and the family continued from there.

With six signature blends, specialty creations, kegs and the ever popular Growler bottles, they have helped change the way beer lovers choose their next purchase. Always expanding for the high demand and different styles, they are adding two more tanks to the already large brewing system. The expansion allows production of their newest styles (Peach Sour, Blueberry Sour, Rhubarb Sour and a champagne style beer), as the demand is high to create new and exciting flavours. Their High Noon blend is very popular in the summer months, as it is fashioned after an unfiltered American wheat ale. It is light with a hint of citrus and is just an easy drinking beer while sitting on the patio or dock.

The Publican House beer (not all styles) are available in select LCBOs, Beer Stores, grocery stores and other establishments throughout the Kawarthas and Ontario. There is also continued expansion of future available locations.

Their craft beer is always a staple at Beer Festivals, special events and, for the first time ever, at the Havelock Jamboree’s 30th Anniversary this year.

Kim Cranfield went on to explain that because the operation is entirely hands on for perfection and quality control with an onsite lab, it has made the brand flourish and prosper in a very tight-margin business.

“People want to know where their food comes from, and it’s the same with beer.”

The Brew Pub features high-end pub fare, created by Chef Brad Watt, who is also the owner of the prestigious Rare Grill House. You can listen to live entertainment and they have a beautiful, relaxing patio.
