Land Rover

The extraordinary every day

Courtney Hancock, Australia’s leading Ironwoman, is our guest test driver this issue, taking the new Land Rover Discovery Sport for a spin.

ew Discovery Sport’s sleek, aerodynamic silhouette, with legendary Land Rover capability and a flexible interior, add up to a great looking vehicle that does so much more. The new Land Rover Discovery Sport is a versatile premium compact SUV. The 2015 Discovery Sport delivers a highly refined combination of performance, safety and efficiency thanks to a body shell of high-strength steel and lightweight aluminium. Both 9-speed automatic and 6-speed manual transmissions are available in the two versions of 2.2-litre diesel models (TD4 110kW and SD4 140kW) producing 420Nm of torque. A dynamic design with a compact footprint provides sevenpassenger seating in a “5+2” configuration (when the seven seats are in use, there isn’t a whole lot of leg room, but it is comfortable and allows you to move half the soccer team in one go!). When operating as a traditional five seater, there is almost 500 litres of boot space, and just one flick of a lever in the boot will collapse the middle row, turning the Discovery Sport into a van, with almost 1700 litres of space. It goes without saying that the Discovery Sport is stylish and oh-so comfortable. There is plenty of leg room and good height and width in the cabin. The interior features high-quality integrations such as an eightinch central touchscreen with smartphone-style swipe functions, a pop-up dial for gear selection in the automatic models, powered front seats, keyless entry and ignition, a powered tailgate, a rear camera and automatic emergency braking. Although most drivers are going to stick to urban driving, the Land Rover Discovery Sport has the capacity for some serious off-roading. Land Rover Terrain Response® maximizes the capability of the Discovery Sport in challenging conditions. Controlled through an intuitive interface on the centre console, Terrain Response® is designed to precisely tailor the vehicle’s steering, throttle response, gearbox, centre-coupling and braking and stability systems to the demands of the terrain. Terrain Response® features four settings: General; Grass/Gravel/Snow (for slippery conditions on- and off-road); Mud and Ruts, and Sand2 as well as an optional Dynamic Mode. Terrain Response® is backed up by a suite of technologies 78 slim magazine winter 2015

that support off-road and slippery-condition driving. These include: Hill Descent Control® (HDC) which maintains a set speed while negotiating steep inclines; off-road Gradient Release Control® (GRC) which progressively releases the brakes when moving away on an incline for maximum control; Roll Stability Control (RSC) which is designed to detect the onset of a rollover and applies the brakes to the outer wheels to bring the vehicle under control; Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) which corrects oversteer and understeer by reducing engine torque and/or applying brakes to individual wheels; Electronic Traction Control (ETC) which reduces torque and/or applies a braking force to individual wheels to prevent wheelspin; and Engine Drag Torque Control (EDC) helps to prevent lock-up under heavy engine braking in slippery conditions by increasing engine torque to the affected wheels. No matter what your usage, the New Discovery Sport will not disappoint.
