comment Last month we reflected on the wonderful facilities we have here in Enniscorthy considering we’re a relatively small town – the new state-of-the-art, international standard, running track; the Country Walk by the Slaney; the beautiful Presentation Centre; a high-standard community pool and fitness complex; the impressive Astro Centre; the revamped Greyhound Track; two 4-star hotels; top class sports facilities for virtually every sport you can think of, etc. Unfortunately one facility is missing off this list – a cinema. This is all the more tragic considering the success the movie Brooklyn (which was largely filmed in Enniscorthy) is likely to enjoy over the coming months following its critically acclaimed premiere at the U.S. Sundance film festival (see page 30). Isn’t it ironic that Enniscorthy – the home of Brooklyn – is unable to provide a home for its screening here in Ireland. In 2013 a major Facebook campaign was launched to try and have the local cinema re-opened garnering almost 1,000 “Likes” but to no avail. We can only hope that some knight in shining armour will emerge from the lingering shadow of austerity to establish a cinema here in Enniscorthy perhaps in time for Brooklyn Part II! – Frank Corcoran
