STATE OF THE ART CYCLING FACILITIES TO OPEN IN MAY

First up, we have brand new state of the art cycling facilities opening in May! With funding help from Cycling Scotland, our new facility will have space for 250 new bike racks, toilets, showers and a changing area with a dedicated repair space that is designed for a cyclist’s needs in mind.

Commuting by bike to Skypark is growing in popularity and you will be pleased to hear that we are CyclingScore Certified. This means that all of our tenants, whether beginners or regular cyclists can enjoy cycling to work all year round and enjoy all of the associated benefits.

CURIOUS COMMUTER • Cycle training: skills development for groups or one-to-one

Aimed at anyone with the smallest interest in changing their travel habits, the Velocommunities project is targeted at converting car drivers into cycle commuters, to positively impact the environment. Organised by Bike for Good, there’s an action-packed free package of services and activities called The Curious Commuter that includes:

• Bike buddies: we will plot and cycle with you on a guided route to and from work • Bike lending library: borrow a bike for free for up to one month if you’re not yet ready to invest • Bikeability sessions in schools

There are so many benefits, from saving money to encouraging a healthy, productive workforce to cutting congestion and reducing your carbon footprint. Working alongside regional service centres, those registered for the Cycle Friendly Employer Award, will benefit from a range of useful services designed to ensure their efforts make a difference. NEW WASTE MANAGEMENT AND RECYCLING FACILITY LAUNCHES AT SKYPARK CALLING ALL RECYCLING CHAMPIONS! As part of our push on sustainability, we are pleased to announce that Skypark has launched a new Waste Management and Recycling Facility and is calling for recycling champions to come forward, visit the facility and learn how you can help us to recycle as much waste as possible back into the economy!

Ultimately our goal is to contribute to a higher quality, clean and sustainable environment through a dedicated recycling regime and this starts with you, our occupiers.

The move towards a circular economy is one of our primary objectives at Skypark and in order to do this, we are

To do this we are starting with the plastics and other key waste types. Kevin and Stephen are now manually sorting every bag we get and pulling everything they can from those bags. This includes all the plastics, the white paper, newspaper and glossy magazines, and all the cardboard. For the first year we are concentrating on the five major plastic types, we will sort collect and bail these for selling on to other users:

We are also bulk bailing aluminium cans, cardboard and paper. Other plastic types like Polystyrene and ABS/ Polycarbonate we are looking into, but this will take some time to get ready for, as they require dedicated machines to shred, compact and bale.

Launch Art Elaine Johnston, William Dobbie, and Christopher Byrne in Pop Up Art Exhibitions Artists show support for Skypark-based Charity ‘Launch Foods’ with an opportunity to win and buy original artwork!

The Studio Fine Art Company is bringing three separate pop-up exhibitions under the title ‘LAUNCH ART’, each featuring established Scottish artists Elaine Johnston, William Dobbie and Christopher Byrne to our donated gallery. Each Artist has agreed to donate a percentage of art sold from their respective exhibition as well as donate an original piece of artwork for a raffle in support of our Skypark-based charity ‘Launch Foods’. The Charity has provided over 70,000 free meals from surplus food in 12 months, serving 300 meals each day to primary school children in Glasgow’s communities that need it most.

William Dobbie’s exhibition will run from the 24th April to 17th May, with the preview evening on 30th April and Christopher Byrne’s exhibition from 18th to 31st May with a Preview evening on 21st May and a presence at the Site Social on 7th May. All Skypark tenants will qualify for a 10% discount on sales and there’s an opportunity to buy a £5 charity raffle ticket to win an original piece of artwork by each artist. We hope that tenants will come and meet the artists and support the exhibitions and raffle - it’s a wonderful opportunity to purchase prints or original art as well as supporting this great Charity”.

All are former graduates of the Glasgow School of Art and during April and May, the exhibitions will begin with a renowned body of rural work by Elaine Johnston; followed by William Dobbie, one of Scotland’s foremost maritime artists; and finally Christopher Byrne, one of the most exciting contemporary artists who takes a different look at the remnants of industry on Glasgow’s Clydeside. ABOUT THE ARTISTS Elaine Johnston

Christopher Byrne

This exhibition will see a body of work that embraces the strong rural animal paintings for which Elaine Johnston has become renowned with much of her work published in the media. Elaine Johnston was born in Glasgow and graduated with honours from Glasgow School of Art in 1997. Specialising in design and fine art Elaine has worked with the Department of Trade and Industry, the British Embassy and the Royal Family of Monaco. Formerly, Elaine was Peter Howson’s studio assistant and holds The Young Achiever's Award for Scotland presented by Her Majesty the Queen at Buckingham Palace and the Design for Diplomat's, presented by the former Prime Minister Tony Blair. Elaine Johnston is an absolute master at painting ‘live’ and you see a blank canvas evolve into amazing contemporary animal and bird pieces, not to be missed!

Christopher Byrne graduated from Glasgow School of Art with Honours in 2015. He views his work as relics and fragments of exploration: Painting, etching, drawing, photography and screen printing. Looking at the remnants of industry on Glasgow’s Clydeside, his pieces detail the themes surrounding these contemporary ruins, from the aesthetics of decay, the reclaiming of the space by culture and nature to the themes of time, both past and an imagining of the future, when all that is left from our way of life is the shells of the structures we leave behind.

William Dobbie William Dobbie is including Skypark in his ‘Mini World Tour of Glasgow’ which is a series of popup exhibitions around Glasgow and the West of Scotland. Working mainly on commissions he has a formidable reputation as one of Scotland’s foremost maritime Artists. He will also be presenting a series of prints from his ‘Forgotten Streets and Stolen Hearts’ series, a poignant reminder of Glasgow’s heritage.

With family ties to the Outer Hebrides his knowledge of landscape came from not only how he saw it but from stories passed down from generation to generation. The landscape spoke for itself and allowed Byrne to put this into context through his paintings depicting the remnants of crofts and crofted lands. One of the most exciting contemporary artists around his work has quickly become recognised and admired, appearing on Sky Arts as a finalist in the Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year.

William was born in Glasgow, world famous for its shipbuilding. Therefore growing up on the banks of the River Clyde, where many ships of historical interest were built including the Cutty Sark and the Queen Mary, he found himself fascinated and inspired by the Clyde’s rich maritime heritage. Following his graduation from Glasgow School of Art he began to build an impressive reputation at home and abroad. His original work can be seen in the boardrooms of major companies such as Superfast Ferries, Forth Ports, Bells Scotch Whisky and our very own Transport Museum. He is fortunate enough to have very famous admirers and collectors of his work - Lady Vera Weisfeld, Sir Boyd Tunnock MBE and Sir Sean Connery.

Launch Foods gets £2000 boost from STV Children’s Appeal Funding Calling all volunteers!

There are so many benefits to volunteering and our resident charity Launch Foods is appealing for helpers to donate just an hour of their time to feed Glasgow’s children in the areas that need it most! Read on to find out how you can get involved. Launch Foods began because Craig Johnson its founder could make no sense of the reasons why so much surplus food exists and yet every day children are going hungry. Launch Foods has provided 70,000 free meals to feed Glasgow’s primary school children in the communities that need it most. Launch’s food truck is providing in excess of 300 meals each day to primary school kids immediately after their school day and during the school holidays. Craig Johnson the founder of Launch said: “We have 80 regular volunteers and we need more people to help when our second truck hits the road. Every day hunger

is still massive issue for children and families in many areas of Glasgow. Launch sets out to solve the issue of food surplus going to waste, throughout the year including school holidays to try to plug the gap. “Thank you to everyone at Skypark that has volunteered and donated so far. FILAMENT PD ON TACKLING CLIMATE CRISIS THROUGH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE It’s been another year of growth for Filament PD, our Skypark-based product development agency with expertise in the development of IoT (Internet of Things) and connected hardware devices, as they continue to go from strength to strength. For team Filament have partnered with Arceptive, the Glasgow-based technology and business consultancy proposing an AI-based platform to provide continuous, large-scale thermal imaging services to government and local authorities, with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions produced by residential buildings by creating streetlevel reports of thermal leakage. These targeted insights could provide an unprecedented opportunity for analysis and be used to trigger behavioural change from building occupants – in heating behaviour and ventilation control – to further decrease emissions from residential buildings, positively contributing to the government’s climate change target of net zero emissions by 2045. In addition the company is now a supplier for Glasgow City Council’s Design Thinking and Business Innovation for SMEs. Commenting on the

projects Craig Lynn co-founder of Filament PD said: “We are delighted that the team is part of a partnership that has been selected to take place in a Scottish Government challenge looking at how artificial intelligence can tackle climate change through the Can Do Innovation Challenge Fund that is managed by Scottish Enterprise. We are also pleased to announce that have been chosen by Glasgow City Council to be one of the key suppliers for Design Thinking and Business Innovation in providing SME’s with support, as part of their Business Growth Programme, for the next 3 years. It’s been a fantastic start to the year for all the team at Filament PD.” Finally, the team has acquired its ISO 9001 the internationally recognised Quality Management System (QMS) standard that specifies requirements for an organisation’s QMS. Craig finished: “For our clients, it means that we can demonstrate our ability to consistently provide a design and development service for a range of products including the healthcare and medical sector. Furthermore, we can demonstrate that we meet customer, statutory and regulatory requirements, that constantly enhance our high standard of customer service through our QMS”.

Did you know that Project Trust, one of the original international volunteering charities for young people has a base at Skypark? The charity has opened up new and exciting overseas opportunities for young people up to age 25 and is inviting anyone interested in volunteering to the charity’s drop in session here on 25th March. Project Trust, who are based on the Isle of Coll with office space in Skypark, continue to offer up to 300 school-leavers every year, the opportunity to experience having ‘A Year With No Gaps’ – with limited places for those aged 20-25. Project Trust empowers young people to be confident, effective, creative, independent and resilient through a challenging volunteering experience overseas. A long-term sustainable Project Trust placement overseas is not only a life adventure and what many describe as the ‘best year ever’. It’s a responsible, challenging, positive life-enhancing experience, helping develop and hone skills for life. The 20-25 Pilot Programme also means young people across the UK, Ireland and Europe will have better access to more flexible and adaptable volunteering opportunities from Project Trust at an age and stage right for them - across teaching, outdoors education, and youth development work. TAKE A BREAK WITH FIONA MACLEOD, BRIGHT HORIZONS NURSERY MANAGER Meet Fiona Macleod, the bubbly new manager of on-site nursery Bright Horizons who has a secret talent for singing and a passion for all things Scottish. Fiona re-located from London late last year to take over running our busy on-site nursery whilst manager Lyndsay Kilpatrick is on maternity leave. With over 25 years of childcare experience her passion for early years care shines through. "It’s the best job in the world" she says. "I knew from the age of 16 this was what I wanted to do." Trained as a professional singer she gave up a scholarship to sing in the West End to pursue a career in childcare. AN INCLUSIVE WORKPLACE CULTURE IS EVERYTHING AT LEIDOS Mel Kerrison of Leidos, shares how the company is a forerunner in dispelling the myths around age related bias, an approach that supports a diverse and inclusive culture and maintains productivity. There any many times in life that we become very conscious of our age. From imposed restrictions, such as the legal age to vote to social stigma of ‘being too old to wear that’. Whilst the former is defined and grounded, the social barriers are perhaps less tangible. And this becomes a problem when these social biases enter the workplace. By understanding where these biases come from, we can create greater awareness, dispel myths and consciously select high performing diverse teams, which is a step in the right direction. Leidos is actively encouraging equality and inclusion on multiple levels including gender, age and sexual orientation; recognising this improves team performance, fosters innovation and improving marketplace reputation. Research shows that diversity is good. According to McKinsey’s Delivering Through Diversity report (https://www.mckinsey. com/business-functions/organization/ our-insights/delivering-through-diversity) “gender, generational, ethnic and cultural diversity, particularly within executive teams, continue to be correlated to financial performance across multiple countries worldwide”. Companies with the most diverse executive teams are 33% more profitable. Leidos has recognised the importance, and also the benefit of diversity, creating a culture of diversity and inclusiveness across a number of initiatives, professional networks, education and community support projects. This effort has been recognised by achieving a perfect score on the 2018 Corporate Equality Index and attaining best in class in several categories in the

Psychology explains why we stereotype We live in a society where we stereotype difference. We alienate generations. Many may recognise the stereotypical phrases of ‘a dinosaur’ or ’12 year old kid’. We compartmentalise people and treat them according to the group we put them in. At Leidos, the culture is one of openness and transparency, providing platforms to have discussions and raise awareness of issues. It is by talking about these topics that as a company collectively everyone becomes conscious of the unconscious. This includes Employee Resource Groups, such as the Young Persons Network or a network for Veterans which not only provides a forum to discuss topics but can provide people with the tools to help them challenge bias inside or outside of work. Social events in the workplace are key to dispelling myths enforced by stereotypes.

What ages receive bias? Millennials are often the most vocal about the biases they receive. Complaints about the upcoming generation entering the workforce are nothing new. The problem with today, as compared to the early 90s is that we are now in a digital age where this type of content spreads fast – a concept known as millennial bashing. And because this millennial bashing is so visible in social media, millennials often enter the workforce on the defensive. But it works both ways. During periods of downsizing, older workers are often the most susceptible to losing their jobs because of unfounded and erroneous beliefs about their work performance and future potential. 16

The way to overcome age related discrimination is by a cultural shift. Leidos delivers diversity training to its workforce, including ‘An introduction to uncovering and mitigating unconscious bias’. As an ISO44001 company, it is recognised that Leidos is a collaborative organisation. To be truly collaborative, one must be aware of the diverse people they will meet on any given interaction. Treating people as individuals and recognising their value as an individual is the first step in dispelling stereotypes and bias.

So what does this mean? Diversity for diversity’s sake is not enough to effect real change. Hiring employees with varied perspectives and backgrounds is merely a stepping stone to a united culture. The rest of the answer lies in facilitating inclusiveness whereby everyone is valued and group differences are embraced. The result is empowered employees who openly share their diverse perspectives. Recruiting for diversity is hard. There is a fine line between trying to attract different people and positively discriminating. Leidos has achieved this balance by working with different external partners such as Out&Equal and Diversity Inc to ensure that recruitment drives appeal to as diverse audience as possible, encouraging candidates from all backgrounds. TALENT WITHOUT LIMITS Ever wondered what happens in the real world of apprentices? To celebrate Scottish Apprenticeship Week, Leidos Graduate Apprentice, Megan Gallagher, gives us the lowdown…

Balancing work and university life is challenging, however the support from everyone makes this transition easier. For example, I’ve been allowed to continue weekly training, games and events as part of Glasgow University’s football team, and when tests, exams or deadlines come up, Leidos are very accommodating. Six months here and I have made friends for life; we’ve even booked a holiday together. This would not have been possible if I wasn’t earning while I was learning.

Before starting my graduate apprenticeship with Leidos, I was following the traditional academic route. School to university. However, through the knowledge and help of my computing science teacher, I am now a Graduate Apprentice Developer at Leidos, a global science, engineering and technology firm, and working towards a degree in Software Engineering at Glasgow University.

I’d highly recommend the graduate apprenticeship route. It offers four years of work experience, a salary, and all the benefits of work and university life.

Earning and learning are two key words associated with the graduate apprenticeship scheme. Split into 8-week blocks, I attend university and work at Leidos, which allows me to develop and learn new skills and put them into practice in the workplace. I’m currently working on a customer project, receiving continuous support from my Leidos colleagues and manager. For the full fouryear programme, I have my own mentor who provides support and assistance and even sits right next to me for any questions!

LEIDOS GRADUATES COLLECTION DRIVE

In early February, as part of an Association for Project Management Challenge, a group of Leidos Graduates launched a collection drive in Skypark, aimed at collecting unwanted sports clothing and equipment for Achieve More Scotland (AMS). AMS are a locally-based charity who provide children and young adults with sporting opportunities. This includes free holiday camps and weekly coaching sessions, in order to promote positive activity in the community and reduce crime and anti-social behaviour. Catherine Fevre (Graduate Project Manager) updated us on the outcome of their collection: “The collection drive went incredibly well thanks to the generosity of those working in Skypark. We had an initial target of collecting 50kg of sporting equipment but by the end of the period, we had collected over 80kg of donations. AMS were overwhelmed by the support and we are all very thankful to those who contributed with their donations.” Keep an eye out for future fundraisers from the group!

ur growing community is thriving and we are delighted to share project news and award wins from NORR. As well as winning awards for education buildings and commercial developments, the team are designing the new Space Hub in Sutherland which is being developed to launch small satellites from the Scottish Highlands. NORR’s Karen Duncan brings us up to speed.

NORR is a global design leader and has been based at Skypark for 18 months. Our professional team of architects, planners and interior designers apply big picture thinking to deliver exceptional projects in partnership with our clients. 2019 saw a multitude of award wins where projects were recognised for their innovative design approach. Most notably, NORR succeeded in winning ‘Commercial Development of the Year’ at the Herald Property Awards for Red Tree Magenta in Shawfield. This Grade A office building aims to be a catalyst for a new business district in Glasgow. NORR also saw a double success at the Education Buildings Scotland Awards, with West Calder High School, crowned Project of the Year and Bertha Park High School, Perth taking home the Award for Technology: Transforming Learning, Teaching and the Curriculum. Hilltop Primary School and Bertha Park were also shortlisted in the Project of the Year category, highlighting NORR’s commitment to delivering inspiring learning spaces for future generations. Kevin Cooper, NORR’s Education lead, worked on all three schools and is constantly looking at new educational design concepts while considering environmental impacts and sustainability, helping to transform the lives of young people in Scotland. In order to change the lives of young people and the communities they live in; NORR’s Glasgow

team ensures that community and stakeholder engagement events are held whenever possible with projects such as schools. These projects do not only impact the students but also the staff that use them and the communities they are in; listening to community concerns at an earlier stage helps to ensure all parties are happy with the final project.

But it’s not just the education sector where NORR excel. The team are designing the new Space Hub in Sutherland which is being developed to launch small satellites from the Scottish Highlands. The planning application has just been submitted to Highland Council and if approved, up to 12 launches a year could eventually be made from the site. Kevin Stephen, director for NORR said “The Space Hub project is exciting, as well as complex and sensitive. The integration of a vertical small satellite launch facility, with associated infrastructure into this rural and naturally significant site, presents many interesting challenges for us; the sort of challenges we thrive on. “Off the back of recent project wins, the Glasgow team continues to grow. Four members of the Clyde Art Group are exhibiting their work in the reception gallery in Skypark 1 until the end of March. This art group, many of whom have studied with Sandy Grant of ‘Art Classes in the Botanics’, comes together throughout the year at various classes and workshops with the aim of supporting and encouraging each other in their artistic endeavours. Passionate about painting and drawing, they enjoy the rapport and helpful criticism that working informally alongside each other provides. This exhibition comprises works ranging from expressive portraiture, to expansive landscapes and explorations of the natural world, utilising a diverse range of mediums, from traditional (oils, oil pastels, acrylic, watercolour and mixed media) to digital art. Frances Clark I work in oils and concentrate on portraits and landscapes. In my landscapes I enjoy capturing something of the stillness, beauty and turbulence of nature. In my portraits, whether formal or expressive, I seek to catch something of the inner life of the person. I enjoy using colour in both subtle and vivid ways in all my works. Grizelda Chang I enjoy using different mediums to express the forms and colours of the plant life I cultivate in my garden and see in the countryside of South Lanarkshire where I live. Susan Norton I am an enthusiastic amateur artist working in the Glasgow area. I enjoy working in oils and acrylics but currently my interest is in developing my use of mixed media. I aim to create free and expressive pieces which are responsive to the environment, in order to capture the essence of what I am seeing. Jennifer (exhibiting as Valkara) Since joining Sandy Grants ‘Art Classes in the Botanics’ I’ve been experimenting with the use of different mediums; from oil paints to chalk and charcoal, and lately, exploring the boundaries of digital art. BAKE SALES If there’s one thing we all love at Skypark it’s a Bake Sale! Cupcakes, scones, empire biscuits – what’s your go to treat? This Spring sees staff from three organisations challenge themselves to raise money for causes close to their hearts. Digital Marketing Executive Sinead Cunningham from Macs Adventure raised £316 by holding a bake sale and raffle on Wednesday 4th March. And as part of her challenge to do 50 things in her 50th year to raise £5000 for Breast Cancer Now, Leidos Document Format Specialist Krista Russell is holding a bake sale on Tuesday 12th May. Krista says "I feel extremely lucky to have reached my 50th birthday as I have been diagnosed with breast cancer twice. I want to mark this year by raising money for Breast Cancer Now.
