INTRO Dear SIP Customers,

April showers bring May flowers - at least that‘s how the old saying goes. In our case, this year it hit the nail on the head. After two years of planning and a 9-month construction period, we moved into our new, large, light and comfy space which is around 1km away from our former home. Moving hasn‘t just been fun, it was unavoidable due to space related reasons. Unfortunately, some of you may well have experienced some extended delivery times in March. What was going down with us? Take a look at this video, which shows what happened in the 3 weeks that were technically known as our „company relocation“: www.vimeo.com/sipscootershop/move2016

When we happily arrived at our new location it was time for our annual open day, which turned out to be a kind of grand opening at the same time. We counted more than 1,400 guests who spent a great summer‘s day with us, many of whom travelled from far afield, including from France, Austria, Belgium, Russia, India, Switzerland and Milan. The Italian contingent included a group from „Offician Supersprint“, enthusiastic scooter and car mechanics who are also great with a camera. They also brought along this clip „Trip to SIP“: www.vimeo.com/167896964 We hope you have lots of fun reading issue no. 6 of CURVE, our customer magazine!

Vespa is getting 70 years old Vespa scooters are as Italian as pizza and ‚Dolce vita‘. The Tuscan scooter icon is celebrating its seventieth birthday on the twentythird of April this year. If you are expecting to discover any wrinkles on this ever-popular two-stroke, you will be disappointed though, the lovable little wasp-like scooters are still capable of mobilising generations and is as fresh and youthful as ever! Later this very month, the seven decades since its introduction in Pontedera (near Pisa in Tuscany) are being commemorated in a fittingly grand style. Vespa fans (or Vespisti) from all over the world are descending upon the parent company‘s Piaggio factory, to celebrate at various events, parties, scooter races and live music happenings planned over the entire weekend. On the twenty-second of April an exhibition is opening in the Piaggio museum at the factory with the title ‚On tour with the Vespa – a seventy year long adventure‘. The twenty-third will see the gates of the factory itself opened to allow the visiting Vespisti to take part in guided-tours of the Vespas traditional place of production. The surrounding Tuscan countryside will also be toured and explored by the swarms of scooter fans on

their buzzing machines in various organised runs. On the twenty-fourth the streets of Pontedera have been reserved for a large parade of Vespas through the town. “We‘re expecting Vespa fans from across the globe and are preparing the best possible reception” ensured the towns mayor, Simone Millezi. As part of the celebrations Piaggio are also inaugurating a brand-new automatised paint shop at the factory. This new facility should help ensure the future continuation of the Vespa’s worldwide advance after more than eighteen million already sold. The story of success began with the production by Piaggio of the first series Vespa, the ‚Vespa 98‘ model in 1946. It was originally designed by an Italian engineer by the name of Corradino D‘Asconio. As a former constructor of military aircraft, he realised that post-war Italy required a simple, economic and easy to operate twowheeled vehicle and set to work designing such a vehicle at the bombed factory site and created an affordable two-wheeler, genius in its simplicity. The boss at Piaggio, Enrico Piaggio, upon seeing the Vespa for the first time famously commented “That looks like a wasp!” - The Vespa legend was born. Public transport was practically non-existent

in post-war Italy and the agile and practical twostroke revolutionised almost overnight mobilisation for the war-weary population. The Vespa was immediately appreciated as an economic method of transportation for both people and goods to market and elsewhere. Young couples riding tightly embraced through Roman alleys, others carrying sacks of potatoes or cement on the floorboards. A combination of updated models, versions and technical innovation ensures that the current Vespas manufactured always ride along the crest of the wave, while remaining completely faithful to the original mandate of their production. All changes and new ideas have always been carefully considered by the leadership at Piaggio, staying true to the concept of Vespa. In recent times, Piaggio is becoming well established in Asia. A total of 519,700 scooters found a new owner in 2015 and the aim is to consolidate their position on the European market, with maximum possible expansion in Asia and the Indian sub-continent. SPRING RACE 07

SPRING RACE VESPA RACING AUSTRIA, APRIL 2016 Last weekend saw the team around ‚Horni Mario‘ organise the seventh in the legendary series of ‚Spring Races‘ endurance race meetings, in southern Austria. Due to the fact that ‚Stoffi‘s Garage SIP Racing Team‘ had already won this event on four previous occasions and the rumours abounding that this will be the final time it shall occur, we were of course present in full force! At seven o‘clock sharp the racers from thirtyfive teams from four nations ran for their machines in traditional ‚Le-Mans‘ style, starting on a very wet and slippery track. Our man Michi was soon leading but small technical problems on the scooter, such as the spark-plug cap disintegrating, saw him fall back through the field of contenders. An exciting fight for first place evolved between the GP 1, Undi‘s Ice Racing Team, Borni‘s VorReso team and our own racing team. After five hours, on a meanwhile dry track with the best race conditions there were only four laps separating the four leading teams. Regrettably the early afternoon saw a quite serious accident occur on the course. The rider from Undi‘s Ice Racing Team lost control of his scooter in a curve, only to see his pilotless machine skid over the track and ram the

scooter being raced by Borni‘s VorReso Team, causing him to crash and hit the ground. The race was stopped and the injured rider evacuated to hospital for an immediate operation on his broken shin bone, ouch! We all wish him a successful and speedy recovery. We used the pause in racing to re-weld our split exhaust. The gearbox on our Vespa, that had a defective third gear since two hours into the race, proved irreparable so it was a case of ‚Keep Calm and Carry On‘! The race re-start at 15.30 hrs. turned out to extremely tricky with the widely anticipated bad weather front arriving and it started raining domestic pets from above. With only one lap between our rider and the leaders, Undis Ice Racing Team who had led until receiving a fifteen minute penalty, couldn‘t make it up to the leaders either. All our efforts were in vain as Borni‘s VorReso Team went on to clinch victory, for the first time at this twelve-hour endurance event! Our team landed behind them as a close second with three laps difference, with Undi‘s Ice Racing Team taking the third podium place. In spite of the nasty accident and the fact that we had to race in extremely bad weather the ‚Spring Race 2016‘ provided a definite highlight on the racing calendar. A great pity that this unique event seems to have found its end....

Once again, this year will see the SIP Racing Team compete in the ESC (European Scooter Challenge, eurochallenge.de) race series. Mike Betz, also known as the person behind the German Scooter Forum and longtime member of our team of racers, has returned to the fray following a short absence from racing. Mikes K-5 class racing scooter is built exclusively using SIP sourced parts and more specifically the parts and components we produce ourselves. The front braking on Mikes scooter is taken care of by our state approved SIP brake calliper, with the brake pads for the road-going item already being of a high enough standard to be suitable for race conditions! The shock absorbers are also SIP produced and are capable of delivering an excellent performance under the most difficult race conditions such as an uneven surface, or hard braking while seeking the curves apex, or even an unfortunate combination of the two! The motor unit has been strictly set up to comply with the regulations in the K-5 racing class, including a POLINI cylinder, exhaust and inlet manifold. It was carefully assembled with a selection of our very own tools, such as the SIP crankshaft fitting tool. A definite ‚must-have‘ item if you are looking for reliability from your tuned motor! The first race of the season has, for a while now, taken place in Mirecourt, France. The race itself has always happened over the Ascension bank holiday weekend, allowing a relaxed arrival and set up procedures. The circuit is completely reserved from Friday for the ESC riders to allow free training laps. This not only facilitates the scooters to be set up for the specific conditions of the circuit, but also gives the racers a chance to sharpen up their racing wits, dulled over the long Winter break from the heat of competition. Track positioning, braking and knowing where and when to keep your eyes peeled, all these techniques could be practised and perfected to realise the full potential in preparation for the

weekends competition. Mike, who is also the current reigning champion of the K-5 class, used all the time he was given to practise, practise, practise....This also gave him a chance to appreciate the advances his rivals had made over last season. Not only Achim Wolf demonstrated a much improved pace compared to last year! There were also impressive displays of increased speed from Thomas ‚Disko Lenki‘ Lenkheit, Michael ‚Muh‘ Sätzler and Andreas ‚Hiro‘ Bayer, with all of them scorching some fine times into the asphalt of the circuit. Qualifying on Saturday morning confirmed this state of affairs, with Mike earning the fifth starting position on the grid for the first run. The pole position row was occupied by Achim and Muh. The first race on Saturday afternoon saw Mike, with his record, have a relatively good start to head off from the main field with the leading group of racers. Even though his fellow competitors put up a stiff resistance, he managed to fight his way through to second place. Achim earned himself a well deserved first place, with a fair distance between himself and his nearest rival! The third place was claimed by Muh, followed by Hiro and Disko Lenki. At the end of the race there was a sudden moment of shock as Achim crossed the line only to have a major high-speed blow-out on his rear tyre and fly off spectacularly following a wicked high-sider!

In spite of a hard landing he emerged relatively unscathed and uncomplaining. Typical toughness of the ESC racers perhaps? In the second race of the Saturday afternoon, Hiro showed everybody how to exploit the advantage of a good start by shooting into the lead from the second row on the grid, followed by a slightly bemused Achim and Mike! In the course of the race they both overtook him though, unfortunately for Hiro, simultaneously! They then delivered a hard-fought duel for the lead. Achim was ahead for a while, as Mike found himself forced off the circuit onto the surrounding grass. After this short interruption in the rhythm of Mikes racing, he was able to claw his way back to second place and then with just a few laps remaining, once again reclaim the lead from Achim and hold it to the chequered flag! Achim remained in second place, third was taken by Hiro, followed by Disko Lenki in fourth. Muh managed to work his way up to eighth place, following a light spill.

1st place : Mike Betz 2nd place : Achim Wolf 3rd place : Andreas Bayer The evenings entertainment following the day of racing was as it always is in Mirecourt : An almost unbelievably friendly welcome from our French hosts and cramped laughing muscles due to the antics of the participants in the paddocks fun and games tournament! Apart from the official indoor fun and games competition, involving a pudding-eating race, brandy snorting, or just plain binge-drinking endurance ‚tests‘, a completely spontaneous ‚slow race‘ was started, a Vespa frame throwing competition (which turned into bowling once the frame had been suitably modified by the throwing). After the fun and games the mob descended onto the dance-floor to shake their collective thing until the early hours of Sunday morning.... Complete report: www.bit.ly/mirecourt16-en

Hooray ! It´s done ! We are in the new building !

SIP Scootershop GmbH has now existed as a mail order specialist for motor scooter accessories, spares and tuning components for 20 years. The latest milestone in the development of this company was planned in 2014 and involved the opening of brand-new premises here in Landsberg am Lech, in No. 4 on the Marie Curie Strasse. The beginning of 2016 saw our team of around a hundred people move over into the new building, just around the corner from our old base. Now we have 7000 sq.m of warehouse floor-space filled with the latest

shelving and storage technology for items of every size and shape, ensuring that the over 1000 orders received daily see rapid dispatch to our customers. Modern conveyor systems, paperless picking and a highly efficient logistics software are now in place to assist our crew. The shop-floor has also been noticeably enlarged and now houses, with almost 300 sq.m, the largest selection of motorcycle crash helmets for sale in southern Bavaria. This means we have a helmet available for every rider in every price class! In addition we also have a tasteful selection

of protective motorcycle clothing produced by ROKKER, REV‘ IT, and TUCANO that does not remind every pub landlord or B&B owner immediately of a biker gang. Providing the ‚Stile Italiano‘ is our Italian styled Bar/Café integrated into the shop area with espresso and cappuccino fresh from our state-of-the-art, high tech coffee machine, panini, tramezzini, pizza, pasta and salads as well as Italian alcoholic drinks. GRAND OPENING “Salvatore, very important, make sure we‘ve enough to drink-its going to be a scorcher! And please bring enough people to pull your sensational pizzas out of the oven on your Pizza Ape-have you ordered the salsicia and the shrimp shish kebabs?“ Salve grinned and nodded “Don‘t you worry, everything will be great!” And so it was! 1400, in words, fourteen hundred of the most curious scooterists visited our brand new Headquarters on the Marie Curie Street in Landsberg am Lech last Saturday. The reason? We here at SIP Scootershop are celebrating our grand reopening with a bang! Our old premises, which are about one kilometre away as the crow flies, have been replaced by

new larger and better premises. We also had great luck with the weather and the open day celebrations could take place on the warmest day of the year so far. Apart from the regular guided trips throughout the 4500 sq m. large hall, exciting dyno testing, a parts fair, diverse small stands (such as the ‚Vesbar‘ from Munich, the ‚Wespe‘ scooter magazine and the Vespa club of Munich), were also present to keep the over 1400 guests interested and amused. To make sure of a suitable sound track for the party DJ‘s Leo Ernst and Benne were doing their duty on the wheels of steel. The founders of the company, Alex Barth and Ralf Jodl, received congratulations from many exotic visitors from places as far away as Russia, France, Italy,

Vietnam and even India for the success of their business. An object that they can most rightly be proud of. The raw elements concrete, wood, rusty and raw steel have been stylishly arranged by the ‚OTT Architects‘, from nearby Augsburg, as decorative art that does not end traditionally behind the shops counter. The piece stretches right through the R&D offices, past the call centre, purchase department, the communal kitchen right to the janitorial room. All seemingly from one mould. A further sign of our progress, apart from the tasteful decoration, is the paperless picking system. Our busy staff, armed with brand new iPods, put together the customer orders in three shifts from our stock of over 38,000 separate scooter orientated items. The sorting and packing now takes place in

GRAND OPENING 13

eight different dispatch areas. Our aim is to be able to process the orders we receive through the web-site or our multi-lingual call centre staff within one to two hours and be able to dispatch the goods the same day, using either DHL, UPS or FedEx, which can be chosen by the customer themselves. The shop, which was set-up along the lines of a factory outlet, stocks a large selection of functional riding clothing along with an unusually large choice of open-face crash helmets on offer produced by Bandit, Bell, DMD, Premier and 70‘s Helmets. The smaller visitors were also well catered for with a (well secured) bouncy castle, face painting artists and free-floating balloons. Salvatores ‚Siperia‘ also successfully managed his baptism of fire and the Italian coffee bar is now a permanent feature

and the products are now available all week (during shop opening times) for all of our visitors to our new premises to be able to enjoy Pizza and Pasta, Dolce, Cappuccino and so on... All in all a wonderful new beginning into a new era with an energetic staff that the hosts of the event can truly be proud of!

22 ARCHEOLOGY

VESPA ARCHE IN THE CATACOMBS OF NAPLES

ARCHEOLOGY 23

OLOGY

I recently read a crazy report in Autobild Klassik (German magazine). 40m below Naples - in the catacombs of the Southern Italian city automobile treasures have been rotting away for decades. Among them a great number of lamentable Vespa models, that have turned into bizarre sculptures and seem to be lost for good. A geologist discovered this special kind of archeological treasure by chance. From the end of WWII until the 70s, police had used this tunnel as a storehouse for crashed vehicles and cars that were involved in criminal cases. Many of them were used for smuggling cigarettes. There is no way to tell why the Vespa scooters had been confiscated, as the documents were destroyed a long time ago. So you can come up with your own story for each member of this fleet of ghosts. Geologist Gianluca Minin and his friends of the Borbonica Sotteranea are planning to turn the catacombs and the subterranean cars into a museum. A subterranean car park is currently being built right next to the entrance of the tunnel system, from where you could easily reach the passages. The question is if the vintage vehicles should be restored or left in their current state. What do you think? www.bit.ly/vespaneapel-en

A NEW SIP CUSTOM VESPA EMERGES It‘s time to start another scooter project! In collaboration with the guys from Butchers Garage in St. Petersburg we are currently planning a scrambler conversion of a Vespa PX. Instead of the standard paintwork, it will be given an acidbased treatment of the metal surface with iron chloride which ensures a suitable look. A raised chassis, a sub-frame for moving the engine, 12“ tyres, etc. We will keep you up to date and are already hugely enjoying the project!

26 SAINT TROPEZ

VESPA WO SAINT TROPEZ FRANCE For the 70th birthday of the elderly but quite jolly lady „VESPA“ from Pontedera, the Vespa World Club has picked a very special corner to pop the champagne corks. Right on the idyllic Mediterranean coast in the country Var between Marseille and Nice, close to Saint Tropez, lies the charming town of Port-Grimaud. And just there last weekend about 5000 Vespa enthusiasts gathered from all over Europe. Base camp for numerous Vespa pilots was the holiday village „Prairies de la mer“ where also the Vespa Village has been located. The rideouts organized by Josette Honoré were a big hit. On scenic roads that cannot be found on any map Vespisti snaked along the beautiful Cote d´Azur coast. Whoever prefered a rest and brake from the journey, relaxing on the nearby sandy beach and enjoying the sun was a good alternative. The Vespa Village was well attended. Vespistis from all over the world crowded the space and came in contact. We have seen SIP customers from all parts of the planet, all Europe, Russia, China, Indonesia, USA just to list a few. Throug-

hout the day various events took place, saturday evening live bands were playing and a VESPA PX was raffled. SIP Scootershop was on site with a booth in the village and has a few impressions for you here in our album of flickr. www.bit.ly/ tropez16-en

ORLD DAYS 2016

ERZBERGRODEO

2016: Conquer the mountain on Vespas Wednesday the 25th of May, 2016 : We embarked on our journey to the world-famous ‚Erzbergrodeo 2016‘ for the twenty second off-road event in ‚Eisenerz‘ (iron-ore) – In the middle of the Steiermark in Austria. A few of the lads, who were determined to find out who amongst them would be riding their Vespa over the finish line first, set off in the middle of the night to guarantee a decent place in the riders camping area for the establishment of the Vespa racing camp. Bernd, Freggle, Michael and Mütze were among the first competitors to arrive at the breathtakingly enormous stone quarry arena. The best location was occupied for the whole five-day Motocross racing Eldorado extravaganza. Once the tents were erected and the paddock equipment set up we noticed that the rest of the Vespa team had arrived so it was off to the organisers tent to get all of our contingent of riders registered and our racing machines inspected and approved by the competition officials. Once all these details are attended to and your race numbers are applied to your race-ready vehicle, you can sit back,

bung the barby on and enjoy the sight of the rest of the world running around in circles! The Thursday saw the Vespa riders, who are taking part in this madness this year to see who can ride the fastest during the ‚Iron road‘ prologue qualifier, received an official tour of the course – along with the rest of the over 1600 strong field of competitors! The most important utensil for this organised chaos?....A solidly constructed set of enduro-goggles, preferably with a decent face-mask attached! The reason? Without some form of sufficient protection the stones and rocks accelerated through the air by the back wheels of overzealous preceding motocross bikers can quickly end up breaking your nose or damaging other facial furniture. You can‘t race with a broken face! Participation in the mass guided-tour to the summit of this enormous mountain gives you the feeling what it might be like as a wild steer in a huge herd of loudly farting mad-cows! The dust and the dirt caused by this initial communal outing leaves every rider return to their respective camps completely covered with what used to be the surface of

the course, but safe in the knowledge of the route for the qualifying stage for Sundays main race – The ‚Hare Scramble‘. Only the fastest five hundred competitors around the qualifier are eligible, here‘s hoping! Before we had a chance to enter the qualifying round on Friday, we all dutifully cleared our Vespas air filters from all of the souvenirs of the course accumulated during the guidedtour of the previous day. Alex and Bernd, who are participating in this event for the seventh year running, were - despite the routine - still suffering from pre-race jitters while waiting patiently in the XL queue in front of the starting area. Freggle and Michael, who can no longer be considered complete rookies here, were also getting infected in anticipation of the arduous challenge. The four Vespa riders are jammed in between an eager mob of hardcore moto-crossers and their bikes in temperatures of 26°C in the shade, waiting for the off. The racers were then individually released onto the course in ten second intervals. Alex went first and was then

tion revealed that he‘d unfortunately cracked his engine casings. Which, during a high-speed ride over a loose rocky surface decorated with occasionally scattered six-inch plus diameter boulders, is really no mystery as to how or why! After we had ridden a little more leisurely down the rear of the ‚Erzberg‘ mountain together we had a chance to check our scooters in a little more detail in the paddock area of the camp. The largest dents were duly hammered out of our wheels of steel in preparation for the second round of qualifying, on the morning of the Saturday. We then set off collectively for the first of the riders parties in the largest of the beer marquees on the site. Including the, now obligatory, beer-bench slide-shows...

followed by Freggle, then Bernd, with Michael being the final member of our team to follow the signals provided by the starting lights on the ramp and begin their attempt over the ‚Erzberg‘ course. It took Alex 21m 28s to reach the finishing line at the summit, to then wait for the rest of the guys in the team. Around a minute later he first welcomed Freggle with his time of 22m 21s, followed by Bernd who took 23m 21s to reach the top and last but not least - Michael with 25m 12s. Happy that all of our team had successfully conquered the mountain with no apparent damage to either man or machine, we all retired to the bar for a celebratory ‚Gipfelbier‘ (Summit beer) to help rid us of the excess amounts of race-adrenaline. In comparison to our respectable times, the swiftest pro-moto-crosser of the day whizzed the climb in roughly 12 minutes! During a cursory check of the Vespas prior to our collective descent, we discovered an oil leak on Bernds machine - spread out in traditional Vespa style over his rear wheel! Closer inspec-

Since Bernd was forced to retire with irreparable damage to his motor only Alex, Freggle and Michael were able to line-up to start on the Saturday. They were unanimous in their eagerness to outdo each other with their 10”wheeled scooters, on a course badly scored and damaged from the competitive efforts of the preceding day. The potholes were all noticeably deeper, along with the exaggerated ruts caused by sixteen hundred back wheels cornering and accelerating. Alex once again made good progress during his ascent as opposed to Freggle who was regrettably thrown off and suffered some technical problems, while Michael was enjoying the extra grip that a borrowed set of wheels fitted with 3.50 tyres can provide. He had to make-do with their threeinched cousins for the first qualifier and experienced every single stone, pothole, rut and undulation in glorious technicolour through his main point of contact with his trusty Vespa! The almost non-existent spring travel combined with the ten inch wheels that all Vespisti know and adore make

about as much sense on this hardcore mountain course as an anonymous alcoholic meeting at the Munich ‚Oktoberfest‘! The debate, once returned to our camp with the barby once more on heavy rotation, was dominated by whether the times set by either Freggle or Michael would manage to beat the fastest time of the team, set by Alex. In the meantime, dark clouds had appeared over the ‚Erzberg‘ and shortly afterwards opened, delivering a familiar mix of domestic pets! Erzbergrodeo 2017‘, here we come! VESPA QUARTERPIPE WALLRIDE The skateboard film ‚Pretty Sweet‘, made by the ‚Girl & Chocolate‘ company, features an interesting introduction scene whereby a skateboarder is pulled to a quarter-pipe by somebody riding a Vespa PX. We would only consider such a stunt with at least full ice hockey protection equipment, plus a generous layer of strapped on foam cushions... These guys do not need any airbags though... See for yourself: www.bit.ly/prettysweet-en

CUSTOM(ER) SCOOTER: VESPA STREET-ROD Long-term SIP customer Michael Riggi has been riding Vespa scooters since he was sixteen years old and is also a member of the Mons-Borinage Scooter Club, based in his home country of Belgium. The prevailing custom styles on the scooter scene left him cold so he cast his net of inspiration into the motorcycle tuning scenes proverbial pond, and in particular the current bobber and hotrod movement, in the creation of his ‚Street-rod‘ custom Vespa project. The basis was provided in the form of a Vespa ‚Sprint‘ model from 1976, with its attractive curves and solid metal frame design. The numerous detailed modifications Michael carried out on his old lady often become first apparent at the second appreciative glance – The filled and smoothed steering assembly switch openings, the ‚poker‘ speedometer, the carbon-fibre tool-box cover on the side-panel, wide tyres combined with lowprofile wheel-rims, suspension lowered by 14cm,

modified front fork assembly or the handstitched alcantara leather seat-cover, to mention just a selection of the more immediately obvious custom features! The paintwork is also much trickier than average. Firstly the scooter received a shade of glossy brown over the base coat, followed by a fine grade of sand (!) applied over the still drying brown paint, to then be finished off by a fine coat of matt-black to fix it all – The perfect look for an authentic and decent vintage effect! The motors set-up was provided with a 177cc POLINI racing cylinder by Michael himself, combined with a racing crankshaft, a larger diameter carburettor by DELL‘ORTO and also a self-constructed exhaust system. Chapeau Michael!!! www.bit.ly/streetrod-en

Vespa paintwork all about paint The greatest ideas are often born from necessity. Moritz Hämmerlein had decided early on in 2012 to completely restore his battered Vespa V 50, including a new paint-job. The bewildering choice combined with a lack of reliable information on this subject drove him to despair, endangering completion of his restoration project. Which colours were original to the V 50 model? Which were the most popular and widespread shades? Should he stick to the factory pallet, use a RAL paint or even the produce of a car manufacturer? Red, yellow or blue? Powder coating or a more conventional option? Questions over questions.

On the one hand you want paintwork that you are 100% happy with and on the other a colour that is effective on the relatively small surface area that a Vespa possesses. Moritz found numerous pictures of differently coloured Vespa models while searching the internet, but without the proper colour code information. This led to Moritz keeping a RAL colour code chart in his backpack for immediate identification of the newly-discovered paints colour. If he liked what he saw, a photograph was then taken which was then registered and filed along with its corresponding identification code. In time this developed into a small archive, sparking the idea for his vespafarben.de website (german only so far).

A respray is quite cost intensive and also requires a lot of work (complete disassembly, preparation, sand-blasting, beating-out and application).

Moritz wanted to provide a service helpful to other Vespisti faced with the same challenges during their own restoration projects.

„Due to the many ‚thank-you E-mails‘ and other signs of heightened interest in my efforts I believe that I was on the right track and have already been able to assist many Vespa owners with their choice of paint.” The ultimate goal is to have every type of original PIAGGIO paint to be identified and represented on this website. Do you think you could help Moritz with his quest? If you are 100% sure of the exact identity and origin of your scooters paintwork, whether original or RAL? Send a (colour) picture of your scooter along with the paints ID code etc. to vespafarben@gmail.com as all help and support is greatly appreciated! www.bit.ly/vespafarben

36 ASIA TRIP

ASIA TRIP 2015

SOUTH KOREA SEOUL: “11TH VESPA RUN IN COREA” This year‘s scooter run saw a trip over to Asia. Korea, Taiwan and Indonesia were all on the travel schedule. 3 countries, three totally different cultures but one passion: the Vespa. First stop: Seoul, South Korea. Some 300 scooters headed out of the city and into the undulating country surrounding Seoul. The convoy was a colourful mix of Vespas old and new. We were welcomed at our destination with a DIY BBQ and around 30 grills, with tasty barbecued duck Korea style being served: and with plenty of KimJi. The raffle proved to be another highlight, and the prizes didn‘t fall short of expectations either. The winner got a brand new Primavera 125 3V, while those coming next got a DAVIDA Speedstar helmet, BELL STAFF jacket, and of course, some SIP products. With a couple of friends, on the following day it was time to fly south to JeJu island: Korea‘s biggest tropical island and a jewel of nature. I was lucky enough to explore the island on an SS180. With two 160 GS and one 180SS our trio was perfect. There‘s a rumour that we were the first to travel the island on vintage Vespa scooters.

TAIWAN TAIPEI: „5TH TAIPEI SCOOTER RUN 2015” Starting off at sea level on Tainan seafront we travelled straight through the country, passing „Sun Moon Lake“ and heading up to the highest road pass that‘s open to traffic in Taiwan, the „Wuling“, at 3,275 meters. The road has breathtaking views of the „Nanhu“, one of the highest mountains in Taiwan, at over 3,800 meters. This was the fifth „Taipei Run“. The event was organised by inveterate Vespa fans who enjoy getting together with like-minded people. With more than 600 scooterists taking part, the Vespa convoy made its way across Taipei. The destination: „Loft 17“, approximately 70 km away, which is a modern concrete complex in the green jungle of Taiwan. Breathtaking views and a backdrop full of Vespas. Tasty Korean specialities were served in a large dining hall, followed by a raffle with several happy faces, naturally accompanied by plenty of Vespa chat. Since time was pressing we had to make it all the way back from Taipei to Tainan - some 450 km - the same day. Thanks to my driving partner‘s superb driving skills and his excellent sense for speed checks we made the route in a record time of just 7 hours. What a ride!

ASIA TRIP 39

INDONESIA JAKARTA: „MOD MAYDAY 2015“ Jakarta, Indonesia. There is only one way to describe the traffic here: CHAOS! At almost 8.1 million, the number of scooters registered in Jakarta is almost as equal to the population of the metropolis itself. Having been on one or two scooter trips in Asia before, however, I was luckily used to the traffic. At just 45km, the trip from the hotel to the event location wasn‘t much more than a stone‘s throw. Travel time: 3.5 hours!! ;-). It was en route to the event location that I became aware of the scale of the event: scooters, scooters and more scooters. The final figure was more than 6,000! The location couldn‘t have been better: a big park right by Jakarta beach. We were greeted by a colourful field of modern and vintage scooters, breathtaking Indonesian conversions with bamboo tops and even some rare „low light“ models. The meeting also included great supporting events with live music from local bands, spare parts stalls, food stands and much more - I found it an unforgettable event.

It has almost become a tradition for the Landsberg-based company to make a visit to ARCHE at the end of the year and bring a cheque along. The staff from the SIP Scootershop got a warm welcome from the assistants at the care home, and they were served pretzels and home-made cake. This year saw an informative discussion about the daily life of the home‘s residents, followed by a tour of the care home.

Meanwhile, the residents gradually began to return home from work and the large living room began to fill with life. They were very happy to welcome the scooter accessories retailer and were pleased to hold the cheque for €3,000 in their hands. The donation is set to be put to good use: the upcoming renovation of the social room. It was a great afternoon with very good food and drink, interesting impressions and the feeling of having made some people happy before Christmas.

“MINIMAX“ HAPPY ABOUT 4.0 00 € DONATION FROM SIP SCOOTERSHOP

“This has made us really happy!” beamed Alexandra Brown (on the right), the coordinator at the SOS-Kinderdorf ‚MiniMax’ family day-centre facility. Thanks to the € 4000 donation from SIP Scootershop the defective coffee-making machine, long a focal point to the cosmopolitan guests of the parents café, can at last be replaced with a brand-new version! Additionally toys and playthings can be purchased to equip the very popular playgroups from the remaining funds. While they were visiting the centre – at Spöttinger Strasse in Landsberg - Martina Hagenmüller, Ronny Berger and Julia Jarczok (from the left) were impressed by the open facilities at the SOS family centre and citizens advice bureaux. They even offer free German language courses! The ‚MiniMax SOS‘ family day-centre shares similar humble origins with the SIP Scootershop, as both organisations started out relatively small to grow and expand to their present-day sizes. The mailorder specialists from Landsberg am Lech have been actively supporting the Ammersee – Lech ‚SOS Kids Village‘ facility for ten years now.

MISSION WATERWORLD SCUBA DIVING

Amazing how the world seems to keep on spinning as normal following another historic world record being made! A team of divers spread their scuba tanks and neoprene suits out across the jetty of the ‚Schwimmende Almhütte‘ (Floating Alpine Inn) and its helpful landlord. The high noon spectacle planned by Günter ‚Lumpi‘ Schachermayr was delayed at the last minute which led to the approximately fifty strong audience, compromising mostly of a mixture of Günters family, friends and acquaintances, retreating to the floating inn to enjoy some lunch. The outside broadcast team from the Austrian Servus TV sank a camera team in anticipation of the ‚Mission Waterworld 5‘. The TV production people from the ‚Red Bull‘ empire were also present at Lumpis previous Vespa stunt, involving being towed along a runway by a Mr. Bachner driving his Ferrari to a world record 185 kph! This world record attempt saw Lumpi and his diving instructor, Gerold Schneider from Marchtrank, scissor into the 4º C water and swim over to a

blue surfboard. The Vespa had been suspended beneath the water by ropes attached to the surfboard floating on the surface. “The visibility down there was so limited, the first problem I had was actually finding the Vespa itself” explained Lumpi as he returned to the shore. He spent a total of twenty minutes travelling on his Vespa beneath the surface of the reservoir, to then emerge from the dark water in finest James Bond manner. Only this time on an orange Vespa. “I almost ran out of air and my calf muscles were cramped up” quipped Lumpi once returned to dry land following completion of the stunt. The footage shot underwater during the whole record attempt was quickly sent over the internet to the Guinness book of records office, securing yet another world record for the daring Austrian. As the Vespa emerged from the artificial lake it became apparent how he had managed to propel his submerged Vespa. The initial worries expressed by the local authorities

WITH A VESPA

concerning oil and/or petrol contamination were proved completely unfounded. Günter did not even need to start the motor of his Vespa! Instead he had made sure it was watertight and attached a pair of battery powered diving motors to the rear of the frame! Günter informed us that “Theoretically I could have strapped the motors to a bicycle, the Vespa only provided a place to sit”. Many hours of experimentation and fine tuning, in the pool belonging to Schneiders diving school, were first necessary to make the subaqua stunt possible. At first the electric motors just sent the Vespa spinning on its own axis like a spinning top. “After we had managed to fully synchronise the performance of the two motors the whole combination finally became steerable, in fact we lost three Vespas before we finally got it sorted out” added Lumpi... www.bit.ly/waterworld-en
