Drama Bring on the Maximalist Makeup

By Jessalyn Holsing

Minimalist makeup, also known as “skinimalist” has been trending for the past couple years with a natural, almost makeup-free look. With our major focus on skincare regimes we dove in and tried to determine which makeup trends were bogus and which ones were keepers. Now that we’ve figured out the precise ways to keep our skin clean and clear (moisturizers and toners being the capstones of peak skincare), we can dive back into full-on faces of bold and beautiful makeup looks. Welcome to “Maximalism.”

The route to a maximalist makeup look are three key features: eyes, cheeks, and lips. Naturally, we want lovely brows and long eyelashes to complement our look; however, by maximizing the features listed we will truly speak “maximalist” out loud. Starting off with a brightn-bold eyeshadow—you won’t need much eyeliner if you use black mascara to emphasize the lashes and fill in the blanks. A vibrant color on the lid extending from the inner eye out to the reaches of the outer tip of the brow will absolutely draw attention. Try a bright pink, red, yellow, or even green if you want to go for the gusto. Go wild with a fiery ombre of reds and oranges or an icy blue-to-white transition, there’s really no holding back. Next, we want to focus on the cheeks: whether you choose a bright pink blush or a flashy colored highlighter doesn’t matter as long as your beautiful cheeks are emphasized dramatically. Finally, the lips: We are going to go beyond striking reds and into hot pinks, glitter, or even a bold and beautiful neutral to brown shade, with something glossy and shiny to bring attention to the plush shape of your lips.

Maximalism with makeup is all about grabbing attention and flashing your personal flair with the colors you choose for your best and boldest features. Pop those eyes, flash those lips, make your cheeks rosy and full, and you’re sure to shout “glam” with maximalist drama wherever you go! n
