PUBLISHER from the Letter

As we enter our 8th year of publishing Simply Bowie Publication and third month

publishing Simply Annapolis, a few people have asked me if I ever worry that we will run out of topics to write about. The answer is a big, resounding “No.” In fact, it is often challenging that we publish only six issues of Simply Annapolis a year because we always have more to talk about than we have room to print. It’s an interesting dilemma to sit down with an abundance of wonderful ideas and determine which stories to publish now and which ones to save for the future.

The talent and resources in our communities continue to amaze me year after year. In thirds issue alone, we have the Hidden Gem of Pit Boys Restaurant serving amazing food and they are super family oriented. Dr. Anyinke Atabong graces the Front Cover 1st cover with an amazing article on Health & Wellness. This Issue almost feels like a Home Issue, showcasing Best Deal Home Improvement and DMV Pro Services. There’s a list of Summer Camps, trend setter fashion, and our farm to table article!

This issue is also packed with plenty summertime fun; such as best places to eat crabs, wine tours, and Manny the Personal trainer with a great article! Stay tune for our July/August issue coming out soon. Make sure that you visit our Website Simplymagazines.net.

Enjoy the summer and all of the wonderful natural resources found right at our doorsteps.

Sincerely

Best Deal Home Improvement

BRINGING DREAM HOMES TO REALITY for 20 YEARS

What’s the first thing you notice when you walk into a hotel room? Maybe how nice it is, maybe you even go and check out the condition of the bathroom. That feeling you have when you walk into an elegantly modeled hotel is the same feeling Omar and Desiree Erazo, owners of Best Deal Home Improvement LLC, want you to have that feeling when walking into your own home.

Best Deal Home Improvement LLC was founded in June 2012, but the foundation for this small, family-operated business have been in the works for 20 years. Omar Erazo’s interest in remodeling and construction was the business’s first spark. Having begun as an HVAC technician, Mr. Erazo begin obtaining certifications and licenses in plumbing, home improvement, and more. With her background in marketing, Desiree Erazo was the perfect, additional factor to getting Best Deal off the ground.

Their company was solidified with three core values: quality workmanship, honesty, and knowledge. Specifically, honesty within their communication is a trait Best Deal Home Improvement LLC prides themselves on. “The customer needs to be 100% satisfied with the job,” Mrs. Erazo shared. The most efficient way for customers to receive the best quality workmanship is through the company’s consistent, transparent communication. The Erazos and their construction team(s) are open and upfront about their pricing and ability to complete a project to the customer’s desire from the very beginning. These values combined keep their company a respected business in the industry and across the DMV area.

Much growth has occurred within the company over these last 11 years. Initially, their services were limited to bathroom and kitchen remodeling solely but are now a proud, full service company. Best Deal Home Improvement LLC now completes mold mitigation, roof repair, deck building, and so much more. And they plan to expand their services over the next five years.

In the near future, Best Deal Home Improvement LLC hope to expand to servicing more communities around the DMV while still offering their quality workmanship. They are launching Best Deal Community Maintenance, a property management and community aid. Be on the lookout for their website launch come mid-March, available through the company’s main website.

10 | May/June 2023

This dream team collaboration 20 years in the making is accomplishing their own goal by restoring homes to new and improved conditions for customers throughout the area and we do Commercial too. At the heart of Best Deal Home Improvement LLC, Omar and Desiree Erazo work hard to not only build new kitchens and decks, but also trusting relationships with their clientele to last for years to come. It is this defining characteristic that has kept Best Deal Home Improvement LLC a go-to remodeling company for many years…and hopefully many years to come.

Where Family Meets Health Care Capital Multi Health Group

Life is navigated through a variety of relationships. The relationship between doctor and patient is a definitive measurement within our lives, specifically in regard to our health and healthcare. It is also often one of the most difficult relationships to harbor and maintain. Comfortability and honesty are crucial attributes to that positive, continued experience amongst medical professionals and their patients. A local medical group has found a way to both foster and retain great relationships in their community: Capital Multi Health Group.

20 | May/June 2023

Since 2019, Capital Multi Health Group has helped heal the community of Crofton, Maryland. Offering services in physical and mental health care, the group has built a rapport of trust, efficiency, and compassion. CEO and co-founder Anyinke Atabong originally couldn’t see herself as a business owner, but four years later she is now overseeing two successful clinics in Crofton and Bowie. Her blooming personality continues to make her a prized psychiatric and family nurse practitioner to patients throughout Maryland and D.C. Clinician Atabong exudes a long-lasting connection with every person she meets and treats. “I’m human just like you – at the end of the day, I just want to you to get well,” stated Atabong. She believes by being authentically herself, her patients feel safe to open up with her. There’s even multiple outstanding reviews online about her kind spirit and candid nature. This warm demeanor flows into all staff at Capital. In fact, a recent patient shared with Atabong how sweet and efficient the front desk clerks are. When speaking of her lovely staff, Atabong declared, “We are family”. Her sentiment depicts how the community within Capital works harmoniously together so that the friendliness they display outwardly is authentic and genuine.

Along with their nurturing climate, Capital Multi Health Group also provides assistance with behavioral issues, physical

health, substance abuse, weight loss, and so much more. The clinichas created an atmosphere where individuals receive “care that is structured for them in a stigma free environment”. Their patients enter not only knowing they are safe to express themselves, but also that they will receive care targeted to help their individual needs.

One specialty Capital Multi Health Group offers is guidance and education on medical marijuana. There is significant ignorance surrounding the use of marijuana medicinally, so this clinic makes it a point to educate and inform patients about their options so that they may make the decision that is best for themselves. With around a 50% Black patient demographic, it also extremely imperative that Capital has constructed a space for Black and POC patients to safelyand openly discuss their aide through use of alternative options. It is clear to see why patients within the walls of Capital Multi Health Group are at ease knowing they will be heard and cared for. From exceptional staff to heartfelt medical advice, it is obvious why patient retainment and referral has remained superb since their opening. Capital Multi Health Group is a gem for the surrounding communities because of their unique diligence and benevolence.

Boleros are making a comeback this year! This trend begun in the 90s with ballet and other athleisure outfit pairings. As we enter this post-pandemic era, many people are more interested in maintaining the hobbies they developed during quarantine, like upcycling and thrifting. Fun fact: boleros re-introduction gained popularity through some viral social media videos of people cutting old tights into the beloved sleevedtop. These are very versatile in that they can be worn as shade from the bright sun or just an extra accessory to a simple outfit. As the summertime approaches, it is clear to see boleros aren’t going away any time soon.

The classic summertime staple is taking a colorful approach this year. Thick-framed, hued sunglasses are in…and can already be noted as we’ve entered the spring season. Many are styling them as the extra ‘splash of color’ for their outfits recently, so expect to see this trend carried into the summer season.

Verbiage:

In terms of jewelry, green seems to be the trendiest color! Whether it’s an emerald ring or a bright green pair of earrings, the leafy shade has transformed everyday pieces into unforgettable accents. This color and jewelry combination is perfect for the summer season; as green signifies the color of life. While the plants and wildlife are in full prosperity, people across the world will be enjoying the treasures life has to give as well…hopefully in their green jewelry!

Okay, but what should you wear on your feet? Well, another 90s trend is making a return for Summer ’23. Chunky, platform sandals are here to stay for the sunniest time of the year. However, unlike in the past, the more colorful the better. So should you prefer the pop of color for your outfit to be more than a jewelry piece, your footwear can handle the job. Plus, who doesn’t love a few extra inches of height, right?

Why Farm-to-Table Not Only Benefits the Consumer but the Environment As Well

Farm-to-table is the process of consumers buying locally grown products from farms or community farmer’s markets as opposed to mass-produced or factory-farmed products at grocery stores, and it has many health and environmental benefits. Heavily processed foods have far less nutritional value than locally grown foods. Genetic modifications, extensive travel time and distances, chemicals, and hormones have negative impacts on both the health of the consumer and the environment. This is because it takes so much energy and pollution to bring these products to us while simultaneously damaging them and the Earth, making the entire system far less sustainable.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that the benefits of eating healthy include but are not limited to a longer and improved lifestyle, lower risk of disease and diabetes, and increased health of the bones, muscles, and skin. The best way to eat healthier is by eating farm-totable because it is then guaranteed that you know what you’re consuming.

Keyrel Williams is a Food Hub Assistant at Dreaming Out Loud, a farm dedicated to promoting a healthier more accessible system of food production for communities in DC that may not otherwise have access to these luxuries.

“Food grown locally is typically more nutritious and people can feel satisfied that when they purchase locally they are not only helping the environment but also their community,” Williams said, “There was a study done that showed that food travels almost 1,000 miles before it is eaten. That burns a lot of fuel when you can get better produce a few blocks away at less cost to the environment. In addition, almost 40 percent of produce is shipped from outside the United States. To keep it from spoiling on its long trip some food is picked before it can fully absorb all of the nutrients.”

Unfortunately, a farm-to-table diet is not as accessible as it should be. Food insecurity is already a huge problem in this country, and those who do not suffer from food insecurity still may not have access to local farms, farmer’s markets, or homegrown products. Mass-produced food and fast food are cheaper and more accessible, yet do not come with the benefits that locally-grown food does. This is why nonprofit organizations such as dreaming out loud are so beneficial to their surrounding communities. Everyone should have the privilege of choosing a farm-to-table diet, but those who have the option and choose not to may be missing out.

“It is more expensive, there is no denying that. But small local farms prioritize quality over quantity and can’t replicate the lower production costs of massive corporations,” Williams said, “Take that and add in the environmental and economical angle and I believe that the increased cost is worth it.”

The recent rise in the cost of eggs has made the prices extremely comparable to locally grown farmer’s market eggs. This simple switch not only supports local farmers as opposed to large corporations that farm their chickens under horrible conditions, but also provides the consumer with eggs that have a longer shelf life, are not coated in chemicals, and are overall healthier.

Beverly Eggleston is the president and founder of Eco-Friendly foods, and works promoting a farm-to-table diet. He highly recommends locally grown eggs and stresses the differences between farm eggs and commercial eggs. “This new, or as I call it, insane model of production isn’t thinking about your nutrition isn’t thinking about your exposure isn’t thinking about your health,” he said, “They’re thinking about margin and volume and profit, and because of that they’re never gonna have the quality we have.”

Eggs at the Eco-Friendly Foods Farmer’s Market Stand. If you are new to the farm-totable lifestyle and don’t know where to start, there are plenty of great healthy recipes to kickstart the process! Shakshouka is one of them, recommended by staff members of Dreaming Out Loud. This comforting Tunisian dish is made by sauteing garlic, onions, and peppers in olive oil or any cooking oil of your choice until they form a sauce. Then add fresh tomatoes, herbs, salt, pepper, cumin, chile pepper, and paprika, and let that cook. Next, make space in the mixture to crack in locally grown eggs and either cook them while covered in the same pan, or in the oven. It doesn’t take long, and incorporates farm-to-table ingredients, making for a healthy and well-balanced meal!

East Coast’s Finest Wineries & Vineyards that Wine Lovers Need to Know About

Explore the 9 most renowned wineries and vineyards that the east coast has to offer. These destinations offer excellent prices and scenery in wine tourism, some of which may come as a surprise.

Boordy Vineyards (Hydes Maryland)

An excursion to Boordy Vineyards in Maryland is a must for any wine lover. The oldest vineyard and winery in Maryland is located in a fieldstone barn that dates back to the 19th century and hosts tastings. Spend the day visiting a vineyard that has received several accolades, including the Governor’s Cup in the state of Maryland, enjoying wine from the vineyard.

Boordy offers tours of its vineyards, barrel room, and winemaking facilities every day of the week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Boordy Chambourcin Merlot is the most popular wine to try. The beautiful outside space is perfect for hosting events such as birthday celebrations and weddings. Weekend concerts and summer farmer’s markets are just two examples of the many activities that take place here on a yearly basis in this region.

Linganore Winecellars (Mount Airy, Maryland)

Linganore Winecellars, situated on 230 acres, is the biggest and perhaps best winery in Maryland. From its hand-cranked beginnings, the winery has expanded to provide visitors with a wide range of experiences, including private tastings and vineyard tours. The shop is open from Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and from 12 p.m. on Sunday. While there aren’t any hotels in Linganore, there are a lot of places to spend the night nearby.

At Linganore, you may schedule private tastings, dessert tastings, and mixed tastings. These events can take place on the expansive patio or in the cozy chamber. With a table reserved beside the fire pit, you may sip wine while taking in the crisp winter air.

Wine tasting may be done in a lovely and peaceful setting in Linganore. The white and red evening wines, semisweet grape wines, and fruit and honey wines that are offered for sale at the vineyard go well with the cheese and charcuterie dishes. The Late Harvest Vidal White is a musttry for fans of sweet wine. In the taste profile, pears, vanilla, melon, and honeysuckle all make a presence.

Barboursville Vineyards (Barboursville Virgnia)

Wine lovers looking for a relaxing weekend getaway will find that the gorgeous Barboursville Vineyards, which are located in the rolling hills of Central Virginia roughly forty-five minutes northeast of Charlottesville, are the ideal destination. The 2022 Virginia Governor’s Cup went to the Paxxito dessert wine from Barboursville, which was made in 2018. The Discoveries Tasting Room, Library 1821, and Palladio Restaurant are all wonderful venues to enjoy a glass (or bottle) of this wine or any of the other outstanding wines supplied.

Reserve a seat at Palladio and enjoy delicacies like veal ravioli, risotto with gorgonzola, and Maine lobster cake, all of which are inspired by the cuisine of kitchens in northern Italy and Virginia. See the neighboring historic Barboursville Ruins, one of Thomas Jefferson’s most well-known architectural achievements, if you’re in the area. They are located in close proximity to the vineyard.

King Family Vineyards (Crozet Virginia)

King Family Vineyards is a vineyard and winery in Crozet, Virginia. Having started making wine in the early 2000s, they have subsequently won several awards for the quality of their products. They sell their wine and provide tastings for visitors.

Wine tastings and polo matches are two more popular events hosted by King Family Vineyards. Visitors may partake in wine tastings year-round, and polo matches are held weekly on Sunday mornings. In addition, a 12acre polo field is available there. The majority of King’s wines were outstanding or very fine, particularly the Crose (rose), Meritage, Chardonnay, and Roseland (white blend).

Guests have the option of purchasing reserve wines in the Library Room, where they can also join in a wine tasting for a fee of ten dollars, which includes a flight of five different wines. Because it has such a large variety of goods, the gift shop is an excellent destination for purchasing a bottle of wine or an unusual keepsake as a present for a friend or

family member. This is a wonderful place to come given its relaxed environment.

Windmilll Creek Vineyard and Winery (Berlin, Maryland)

At the historic Windmill Creek Vineyard & Winery, guests may enjoy a variety of activities, including wine tasting, live music, and delectable foods from a food truck called The Garden Grill. Not far from Berlin’s core business center and Ocean City is where you’ll find Windmill, a restaurant that welcomes both children and pets. On the weekends, the vineyard hosts wine tastings in addition to brunch, dinner, and live music performances.

The Winter Igloo Village Experience is an outdoor dining event that takes place in the early autumn under one of our heated igloo domes. Igloo restaurants offer a one-of-a-kind dining experience with a menu that is served in a fondue pot and includes an extensive selection of appetizers, main dishes, and desserts, in addition to alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages. There is a limit of six people that can occupy this space at one time. Visit this beautiful small location in a local winery, and you will be treated to a meal that you won’t soon forget as well as an ambience that is truly one of a kind. Members of the Windmill Creek Wine Club will receive special perks such as discounts in the taproom, access to exclusive tasting events, and early access to limited-edition wines. There is a wide selection of excellent wines available, from traditional reds and whites to experimental fruit wines. An outstanding bottle of wine, some delicious appetizers, and a panoramic view of nature’s splendor are always a good time.

Adams County Winery (Orrtanna, Pennsylvania)

Adams County Winery in Orrtanna, Pennsylvania, has been producing wine since 1975, making it the fifth-oldest winery in the state. The Farm Winery is located on more than 75 picturesque acres surrounded by rolling hills and lush farms. The winery’s home, a bank barn, dates back to the 1860s and is a major historical site in Adams County. Our Tears of Gettysburg vintage debuted in 1988, making it one of Pennsylvania’s oldest wines. The winery has about 12.5 acres of vineyard space, and I’ve counted five different grape varietals growing here. It boasts a large selection of wines, both dry and sweet, as well as a lovely patio and high-quality wood-fired oven pizza.

Narcisi Winery (Gibsonia, Pennsylvania)

Narcisi Winery is an excellent alternative for individuals in western Pennsylvania seeking wineries on par with the best in the world. They have been in operation since 2001 and have a facility about 10 miles north of Pittsburgh.

In addition to a delectable menu that is heavily influenced by Italian cuisine, the Tuscan villa that serves as the location of the winery’s restaurant also features an

extensive wine list that includes both well-known and lesser-known labels. Indulge in some delicious fare and refreshing beverages at this top-notch cafe while taking in the gorgeous scenery of the surrounding hills and landscape.

Private tastings and tours can be arranged throughout the weekends at the Narcisi Winery. Visitors will get an exclusive look at their production facilities and vineyards during the tours, followed by a sampling of six of their world-class wines.

Raffaldini Vineyards and Winery (Ronda, North Carolina)

Raffaldini Vineyards & Winery, one of North Carolina’s finest wineries and vineyards, is a must-visit for its exquisite dry wines. The Raffaldini family has been producing wine in Italy since antiquity. Raffaldini offers authentic Italian flavor approximately 75 minutes west of Charlotte, in a tasting area intended to resemble a Tuscan villa and featuring a panoramic view of the Blue Ridge and Brushy mountains. The winery specializes in wines of Italian provenance, and their vermentino and sangiovese are particularly noteworthy. Every September, Raffaldini Vineyards & Winery celebrates one of the largest Italian celebrations in the Southeast: The Fest Italiana.

As one of the finest wineries and vineyards in North Carolina, Raffaldini resembles a scene from Tuscany with its picture-perfect villa made of clay and stone in the region’s traditional architecture. Similar to the previous property, this one offers a view of a 42-acre vineyard and distant mountains. The expansive patio with additional outside seats will allow guests to relax with a glass of wine while observing the breathtaking scenery. Three of their most popular wines are Vermentino, Montepulciano, and Sangiovese. For lighter winer loves, pick a rose or Moscato d’Asti.

Banner Elk Winery (Banner Elk, North Carolina)

Banner Elk Winery has received a lot of accolades and is considered as the crown gem of North Carolina’s vineyards. Its close proximity to the Blue Ridge Mountains adds to the region’s magnificent landscape. The establishment’s names imply that it has both a vineyard and a villa, both of which are famous tourist destinations in North Carolina and beyond afield. The luxurious accommodations provide a variety of the finest wines from around the world. They produce a range of great wines independently, including Cabernet sauvignon, Seyval blanc, blueberry, and rose wine, to mention a few.

Tours of vineyards are provided for anybody interested in learning more about grape cultivation and harvesting. During a visit to the Banner Elk estate, visitors will also get the chance to shoot the stunning surrounding scenery, which includes the Pisgah National Forest, the Tennessee Valley, and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

EXCELLENCE ON PURPOSE

Excellence on Purpose is more than a personal training service - it’s an invitation to change your life for the better. Having been a personal trainer for 20 years, owner Manny Rothmiller is no stranger to what it takes to become fit, but his business expands well beyond that. With the help of numerous health and wellness professionals such as trainers, researches, and nutritionists, he has cultivated a philosophy to help those in the community and beyond achieve their goals - on purpose.

Balancing family on two opposite sides of the fitness spectrum, Rothmiller knew from an early age that he was interested in being fit. He chose to study pre-med in undergrad, taking classes in anatomy, physiology, and nutrition to gain a better understanding of how the body works. After being injured in the military, through rehabilitation he gained a deeper passion for exercise and wellness. Through the combination of these aspects of his life, Excellence on Purpose was born.

Excellence on Purpose, Rothmiller’s philosophy, came into existence in 2009, with it’s incorporation as a business in 2011. “Excellence on Purpose as a lifestyle is to get people to focus on being the best

versions of ourselves with processes,” he said. It involves taking a holistic look at things besides solely diet and exercise while having one look at specific goals and working from there. There is an emphasis on tracking and managing habits to lead one to these goals - therefore achieving them on purpose. Their main audience are people who are simply interested in being the best versions of themselves. “Excellence on purpose is about identity. It’s about, you know, understanding who and what you need to be, and then working as hard as you possibly can to become that” he said.

“I come across a lot of people that do affirmations and they have inspiring vision boards, but they don’t have scoreboards”, he said. “They show me their, vision board and I say, what’s your scoreboard? How do you keep track of what you’re doing? How do you know?” More than anything, Excellence on Purpose is a philosophy that’s main focus is on measurable goals that will get one to where they aspire to beinstead of making empty promises to oneself.

What makes Rothmiller’s business different, is that he is in the unique place of having been on the other side of the very issues that they focus on, whether

that be physical or mental. He also comes from a place of understanding the need for fitness in the community. “If you look at the statistics, they say four out of five women of color are overweight. And you know, women of color are the center of our community,” he said. Seeing this overall need is what keep Excellence on Purpose going.

During the 2020 pandemic. The company began it’s current phase, which is lifestyle and personal training. One begins with a free consultation, where both a questionnaire and a movement assessment

is given. Along with this, new customers receive a free workout so they can meet them where they are. After this, there are different program options such as one-on-one training, small group, and bootcamp. Along with physical fitness, there is also an emphasis on other aspects of help, with offerings of lifestyle and nutrition coaching. Excellence on Purpose has also recently partered with a genetics company, through which customers can find out how their DNA plays a role in their health, wellness, but moreso their overall life.
