HICKS SCHOLARSHIPS As a sophomore in college, Thomas O. Hicks, TexasAustin ‘68, was motivated by the Texas Alpha Chapter to get serious about his grades, which had suffered during his freshman year. He improved his GPA significantly that year and kept it up, eventually obtaining a master’s degree at Southern California. In funding this special scholarship program, Hicks recognizes and rewards brothers who get on track with their grades after a poor start. These scholarships go to SigEp juniors who have significantly improved their GPA since their freshman year. “I started the Hicks Scholars program 20 years ago to provide a small incentive for brothers to ‘turn it up’ their sophomore year, which hopefully gives them a shot at the GPAs needed to take the next step,” said Hicks. He is a Life Trustee of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation, has been the owner of the Texas Rangers and Dallas Stars, and is chairman and chief executive officer of Hicks Holdings LLC, a private investment firm based in Dallas.
The Hicks Scholarship impacted me in a way that not many people would understand. I went through a tough adjustment period my freshmen year, and my GPA suffered from that. … My experience has taught me the importance of realizing when you need help, and how to ask for it.
