hat does a whiff and a golf player in winter have in common? They both miss something. It used to be that when winter came, the clubs would go in the closet and golfers couldn’t do much besides just sit around and miss being able to get out on the course — but technology has changed all that. Now, golfers can play anytime of year, and just about anywhere too, thanks to golf simulators that bring the game of golf indoors — and into Lake Carroll’s clubhouse, where the former Members Room was changed in November into the Simulator Room. Open to the public since Nov. 1, the simulators
let golfers bring their clubs inside, drop a ball on a square of green turf, program a scene on a video screen, and swing away for a competitive round of nine or 18 holes of fun on the fairway. The room has two Foresight Sports simulators that not only simulate being outdoors on a course, but also comes with breakdowns and analysis of players’ putts and swings, using with motion-sensor technology. Golfers know exactly how long their shot is, along with their launch angles. The simulators have been a long time coming for Lake Carroll. Course pro Jason Hill sought them as long as six years ago, and now the course has indoor quarters that’s likened to a golf studio.

“We got a good deal on them, and it was time to have them,” Hill said. “We have the space for it, too. That room wasn’t being overly utilized, but now it has space to be a good simulator room and golf studio.” Foresight Sports creates a top-of-the-line simulation system used by top professionals around the world that not only gives golfers a way to play all year, it can help improve their game too. Whether it’s a tee shot, approach or putt, if there’s a stubborn setting at a hole that you’re having trouble with, the system can lend you a high-tech helping hand through visual aids. The simulators can also be used for golf lessons, and Hill plans to have young golfers in the annual junior golf camps use them to help develop their games as well. ... That’s not the While using a simulator may seem like a challenge to some question anymore, because first-time users, they’re quick to learn, Hill said. He’s heard now you can get in a game of golf anytime from customers who had been worried of year at Lake Carroll, thanks to a pair of new that their game won’t fit with the indoor golf simulators at the Clubhouse, which simulation, or the screen are open to the public for an hourly fee. Players take a not being able to withswing and technology does the rest, using sensors (below stand the power of right) and computer software to track the ball’s trajectory one’s swing. Rest and give golfers feedback on their swing. The simulators assured, the have been gaining popularity in recent years and provide Foresight screens players with a number of benefits: They can work on their can withstand the technique, keep their game sharp over the winter months, whacks, and there’s play different courses around the world, or just enjoy enough space to swing safely some casual course time, alone or with friends. Lake without clipping something. Carroll Golf Course pro Jason Hill (below left) has “Some people are nervous about been wanting to bring in simulators for the simulators,” Hill said. “A lot of times past few years, and the time was someone will go to one and they won’t be very finally right. good systems, and when you have ones that aren’t very good, the experience is not as good. We have tons of room, so you can feel like you can swing and not be afraid to hit anything.” Out on an actual course, there’s little time to stop and take a break when other golfers are wanting to play through. Not a problem on the simulator. And you don’t have to wait until you reach the turn to grab a snack or drink at the clubhouse, or use the restroom. There’s no traveling on or between holes, and it makes for a faster, more time-efficient experience. If you want to take a break, grab a seat on one of the comfy couches; and TVs will be installed soon to give customers something else to enjoy while waiting their turn.

But perhaps best of all, the simulators help eliminate the monotony of being holed up indoors when it’s not golfing weather. “Its going to be faster than a round of golf,” Hill said. “Two people can play nine holes in under an hour, and play 18 holes in under two hours. You can hit range balls and play golf with two people in less than two hours; doing it on the golf course will take you at least four hours. It helps with time and breaks it up a little bit, and breaks winter up big time.” Previously, Lake Carroll golfers who wanted to keep their game sharp over the winter had to travel to Woodbine Bend in Stockton, PrairieView in Byron or X-Golf Sauk Valley in Sterling. Now they can feel right at home playing golf year-round — and it won’t put too much strain on the wallet either: $25 per group, per hour for members from Monday through Thursday and $30 from Friday to Sunday (non-member groups are charged an additional $5). Tee times must be arranged in advanced through the pro shop, but an online scheduling system is being developed for launch at a later date, Hill said. The final tee time each day is set for 9 p.m.

League play also is available using the simulators, and there’s no need to jockey around commitments with winter trips, too. The nine-hole, two-person Winter Simulator Golf League runs from Dec. 4 to March 24 with a weekly cost of $25 per player. Pairs can be men, women or both, and there are no set play dates — matches can be planned within a two-week period. The league will be flighted once handicaps are established after the first two weeks. Weekly prizes — cash and pro shop gift certificates — and skins games are included in the fun. “People now have an outlet in the winter time,” Hill said. “It’s a big deal. There’s a lot of people who are out here in the winter, and since Covid we’ve had a lot of people who are out here now full-time. We hope to have a lot of usage on the weekends and evenings. That’s the goal: to keep golf going throughout the year.” Activity on the golf course has risen steadily since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in the spring of 2020, with activity in each of the past four years better than the year before. Now with the addition of the simulators, Hill and his staff are sure to see more business, and Candlelight Inn – under the same roof – is likely to see an uptick in customers as well. “I think this is going to be real good,” Hill said. “It’s going to be a place that can be used and be an asset to Lake Carroll.” Cody Cutter can be reached at 815-632-2532 or ccutter@shawmedia.com.
COME PLAY Lake Carroll’s golf simulators are open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday through Sunday. here used to be a time when the Mississippi River was America’s busiest thoroughfare — the main drag of commerce in a growing nation. Cities sprang up along its shores and pushed inward, carving out a home in the rich land around it. Barges floated along its waters, steamships pushed through its mighty current, and Mark Twain would celebrate life on the river. In Iowa, some of those cities would grow into lumber capitals of the world, others would quadruple their ranks — and one would become a bucolic burg that would give birth to one of the Wild West’s most famous showmen and a put a pair of pickers in people’s living rooms across the nation. LeClaire is nestled along the shores of the Mississippi River, a short drive from the Quad Cities, and just off the I-80 bride that spans the world-famous waterway. The city has become a go-do destination for travelers and tourists who want to enjoy a relaxing day along the river, shopping, visiting a museum, sightseeing on a river cruise, and enjoying all the various flavors of food and drink served up at its restaurants and breweries — but LeClaire is far from a sleepy river-town. The community is one of the fastestgrowing cities in the Quad Cities Metropolitan area, seeing a 65% jump in population from 2000-2020, going from just under 2,900 people to just over 4,700.

Whether it’s a visit to the Buffalo Bill Museum, checking out one of the many unique shops — including Antique Archaeology, the place where “American Pickers” got its start — or a trip on a river boat when the weather’s nice, there’s a lot to do in this small town about 90 minutes southwest of Lake Carroll. First-time visitors may want to stop by the LeClaire Information Center in the middle of downtown, where informational flyers on the town’s many attractions, as well as those in the region, can be picked up. The Center is staffed daily from late morning through early afternoon by helpful guides who can help you plan your day. Menus from the town’s establishments also are available. Visitors can connect to the town’s history — which stretches back to the 1830s — with a visit to the Buffalo Bill Museum, where you can learn about one of the city’s most famous residents: William “Buffalo Bill” Cody, who became famous in the Old West as a cowboy and frontier showman; and get a feel of what life was like in those days through artifacts and their stories. Cody was born on a homestead about a mile west of town in 1846 before being raised in Ontario, and later Kansas.

The museum not only pays tribute to Cody, but also the history of LeClaire and its journey from a little river town to a tourist destination. The largest attraction, by far, is the Lone Star Steamer, a dry-docked ship that was the last wood hull paddle wheel boat that ran on the Mississippi River, all the way up to 1967. The 1890 steamer is open to walk-through tours, where people can learn about what life was like on the river in days gone by. Other exhibits include a 1920s oneroom schoolhouse scene, local farm equipment, and examples of early flight data recorders (“black boxes”) and retractable seat belts developed by another notable local resident: James “Crash” Ryan. Nearby, overlooking downtown and just behind the BP gas station, is a place that’s helped put LeClaire in the spotlight, and made TV personalities out of pickers: Antique Archaeology. If the name doesn’t sound familiar, then you’ve probably never watched The History Channel’s long-running series, “American Pickers.” The business is owned by the show’s longtime co-star Mike Wolfe, and has been featured in shows throughout the series’ nearly 15-year run, along with shots of LeClaire itself.

Some of the show’s “picks,” some of which have seen screen time on the show, can be found there, along with show-related merchandise and pieces of local nostalgia – “rusty gold” and “quirky junk,” as one of the shop’s flyers states. While Antique Archaeology is the city’s most famous antique shop, it’s not the only one. Shoppers can take a trip down memory lane at Decades, Mississippi Cottage Antiques and Emily Found Out. Elsewhere, Aunt Hattie’s Fanciful Emporium Unique Gift Shop offers an eclectic mix of fun and fanciful merchandise for all ages: decor, gifts, breweriana, books, signs, and a lot more. With Christmas approaching LeClaire can be the perfect place to find a unique holiday gift. While the downtown is only about six blocks long — along the town’s main drag, Cody Road — it packs in a lot of shops where you’ll find antiques, quilts, clothing, candles, jewelry, pottery, flowers and home decor, to name just a few, and they’re staffed with folks who are more than happy to offer personalized service with a smile. If you’re looking for gifts to fill a goodies basket, stop by one of the shops in town that offers tasty treats and delicious drinks. Are you a shameless chocoholic? Then stop by The Shameless Chocoholic. Elsewhere, popcorn is promoted at Kernel Cody’s Popcorn Shoppe, where customers can enjoy movie-goers’ favorite snack in a variety of flavors, made on site, along with chocolates and old-fashioned candy.

Within two blocks of one another on Cody Road sits a brewery, winery and distillery, colloquially and locally known as “Libations Lane.” Green Tree Brewery crafts beer, seltzers, mixed cocktails, wines and ciders. Mississippi River Distilling serves up whiskeys, vodkas, gins, oldfashions and creme liqueurs. Less of a beer mug and shot glass kind of person and prefer your libations in a glass with a stem? Visit Wide River Winery’s tasting room where its red, white and blush wines can be sampled and enjoyed; the winery itself is just up the road in Clinton. There’s no shortage of places to eat at in LeClaire in a host of atmospheres, from cafe-style dining to good old roadhouse grub. Pizza, Mexican fare, comfort food — it’s all there in LeClaire. You can find a list of dining establishments at visitleclaire.com/dine/. Of course, no visit to LeClaire is complete without some time on the river. It’s a bit cold out now, but when things warm up, visitors can go with the flow. Riverboat Twilight offers cruises on the Mississippi River from May to October, from two-day adventures to 90-minute jaunts. The replica Victorian boat, built in 1987, has a cash bar and gift shop on board during each tour; meals and live entertainment can be enjoyed during the longer treks, which go upstream to Dubuque and back. Captain’s narrations on each tour inform visitors about the river and its unique features. The vintage 1916 City of Baton Rouge serves as Riverboat Twilight’s landing boat, and can be marveled at both inside and out before boarding the tour boat.

LeClaire also has special events throughout the year that attract people from near and far, including Eagle Festival in January, Buffalo Bill’s birthday celebrations throughout February, both Heartland British Auto Fest and ‘Vettes on the River in August, and the cross-state tug-of-war competition held each August between LeClaire residents and their Illinois neighbors across the river in Port Byron. Tugfest features a 2,700-foot, 680-pound rope stretching from both side of the river, with each team vying for rights to a traveling statue of a bald eagle in flight. Getting to LeClaire from Lake Carroll involves a drive along Iowa’s Great River Road. Crossing the Mississippi at Savanna and Sabula, one will parallel the river near its widest point, at almost 4 miles, between Thomson and Clinton. In LeClaire, though, the river is narrow enough to see people on the other side in Port Byron. It’s a scenic trip to a scenic town, where you’re sure to find something worth the drive. Food, drink, antiques, gifts, culture and history — just take your pick. Cody Cutter can be reached at 815-632-2532 or ccutter@shawmedia.com.

If you ask Nathan Bontreger to show you one of the finest poets to grace God’s Earth, he might just point to a tree.
He’s not the only one. The famous American author Joyce Kilmer once wrote: “I think that I shall never see, A poem lovely as a tree.” Bontreger must have a little Kilmer in him because he’s become something of a writer himself, unveiling the beauty beneath the bark and helping nature’s tallest children tell their story. Bontreger, along with wife Erma and their seven children, are sharing the tales that trees have to tell through the furniture they that’s built and sold at Select Hardwoods, their store and sawmill near their home west of Pearl City. For Nathan, every layer of a tree is like a chapter in a story that’s taken decades to write. The textures and shades revealed in the wood’s grain are like witnesses to history — trees stand and watch, reaching for the sky as time passes them by. Every Among the time he cuts into a tree, it’s pieces Nathan Bontreger like opening a present: He has crafted in his Pearl City never knows what workshop is this rustic table, he’ll see until the made from walnut, his faslabs are cut. vorite wood to work with.

“It opens up the beauty of what’s inside,” he said. “You can almost get poetic. The outside is drab and brown, but not the inside, where you can see the true beauty. That tree had a lifespan. [You can see] the heart and how it grew and it grew. It’s awe-inspiring to me to think that God allowed for all of these years in this tree’s life, yet it does reach maturity.” The Bontregers’ chapter of a tree’s story begins when logs come in to the mill. Black walnut trees are Nathan’s favorite ones to work with, a strong wood with colors dark and deep. The Bontregers have turned black walnut trees, and several other varieties, from northern Illinois, into dinner tables, desks, vanities and nightstands. Letting little go to waste, branches are turned into pieces of decor to compliment the furniture, such as centerpieces. Logs are cut into slabs of wood, sent through a planer, with some blemishes fixed — but not all of them. Everything in nature tells a story, even the tracks worms make in the wood, or holes pecked by a bird. Those “imperfections” can actually add to the wood’s beauty.

The Bontregers sell items made at the mill, as well as those from other Amish furniture manufacturers they know. The family is deeply rooted in their Amish faith, and Nathan and Erma give their children the opportunity to contribute and create their own pieces as well. Their youngest children often help with some of the lighter assembly details. The family aspect of the business “means a lot to us,” Nathan said. “Maybe it won’t create as stable of a revenue as a job that I could work at elsewhere, but this allows us as a family to work together,” Nathan said. “We can pass on skills. With that parent-and-child relationship, you want to train them up for the Lord, and you try to instill simple things like obedience and timeliness. They want to help Dad and Mom. Working together can create good memories, and they can be beneficial.”
Nathan has a deep appreciation for wood. “You can almost get poetic,” he said. “The outside is drab and brown, but not the inside, where you can see the true beauty. ...
It’s awe-inspiring to me to think that God allowed for all of these years in this tree’s life.”

It takes a lot of horsepower and manpower — and talent — to turn a tree into a piece of funrniture. It begins when a tree is brought down and delivered to Select Hardwoods, where its run through a sawmill and sliced into boards. Then it heads to the shop where tools help transform it into chairs, tables, desks, dressers and other pieces, which can be seen at the business’ showroom. The rest of the family contributes, too, with items such as wind chimes made from recycled spoons, birdhouses made by the children, and other items. PHOTOS CODY CUTTER/ CCUTTER@SHAWMEDIA.COM

Among woodworkers, tree burls — such as this Australian gum burl in Nathan’s shop — are much sought after. From the outside they look like little more than a large, knobby growth, usually on the trunk, but what lies inside them are prized pieces — beautiful patterns that are truly one of a kind.
CODY CUTTER/CCUTTER@SHAWMEDIA.COM
Nathan has fond memories of helping his father, David, at his family workshop in their hometown of Shipshewana, Indiana, about a halfhour east of South Bend. When he was young, he worked for an Amish furniture company not too far from his hometown and gained an appreciation for wood furniture. He later met Erma and moved closer to her family in Mio, Michigan, where her family owned a sawmill. “That was a lot of what was going on there, was sawmilling,” Nathan said. “Lots of timber, hard maple, logging, forestry. My brother-in-law offered me a job at a sawmill, so it was kind of because of my wife that we got into the sawmilling. Truthfully, at first, I thought there were better things to do in life than stacking boards, but we stuck to it and we were given different responsibilities; we got to learn how to grade lumber and took turns running machinery. “Once I got past the point of just stacking boards, we were sawing furniture-grade lumber.” For Nathan, his appreciation for wood’s strength and beauty is something that never gets old. “You open up the log and you see this beauty and go, ‘Oh, wow!’ The outside just looks like a tree. A tree’s nice, but you open it up and look at it, and it’s just phenomenal.”

The Bontregers later moved to White Hall, Illinois, about an hour north of St. Louis, and have lived in Pearl City since 2014. Sawmilling and making furniture wasn’t in Nathan’s plans as his family began to grow; he had aspirations of becoming an organic row crop farmer, but that didn’t go very far. Needing to find work, he sought to enhance the furniture building and sawing skills he learned earlier in life and decided to make a living out of it. “The farming doors kind of seemed to close, and there was a lot of walnut logging going on in the area,” Nathan said. “So what do you do if you don’t know what to do? It seemed like the Lord was opening the doors to having a sawmill, and that’s what I had used to know how to do. We tried it [again], and it was a challenge opening up and finding loggers that would sell you logs.”

Got a tree trunk that you don’t want anymore? The Bontregers also do custom sawing projects for customers. Have some surface design in mind, but don’t see it in their two-story storefront? The Bontregers will find a way to help you get what you’re looking for. They enjoy helping trees write the next chapter in their story, creating the kinds of pieces that are built to last. “It’s not disposable furniture,” Nathan said. “They have no particle board, they’re true, solid, hardwood. It’s something that should last for future generations. With something like veneer, you can get water on it and it’ll soak up and get wrinkly; it’s not actual, true, hardwood. “A theme going on in America today is real, American hardwood, and this definitely fits this category.” Cody Cutter can be reached at 815-632-2532 or ccutter@ shawmedia.com.

ravis and Cami Yenney didn’t think that some horseradish grown at their Mount Carroll home was going to change their lives all that much. Just a few years later, that crop not only grew into a thriving business, but one of the reasons people come to Carroll County’s seat on Saturday mornings throughout the summer and fall. What started with a few jars of horseradish jam on the Yenneys’ first Mount Carroll Farmers Market table has turned into two tents of all sorts of jams and desserts at the market, as well as a creative kitchen on historic brick-paved Market Street, and a business with a name that’s proof positive that opposites attract, and they attract customers. family has used for generations, to better capture flavor and give their food a richer, deeper taste. While some might just take a can of mushroom soup and throw it on a tater tot casserole, the Yenneys make their own beef cream sauce to compliment the comfort food. “We don’t cheat with opening cans and boxes; everything that we can possibly do is made from scratch and is as locally sourced as we can,” Travis said. “Some of the places, it seems like these days, think it’s all about the speed, but you’re losing some of the quality and you can tell it’s not ‘theirs.’ So our goal is to definitely bring it back to where I’m using methods that I learned from Mom, that she learned from my grandma. There’s just no better way to extract flavors than the old school ways that people are kind of getting away from.” Among their more popular jams are jars you won’t find on your supermarket shelves, the kinds of flavors that set them apart. There’s the one that started it all, horseradish, along with sweet rhubarb, jalapeño, cucumber marmalade and a Carolina rhubarb that’s sure to heat things up.
The Yenneys are the farmers, and the cooks, at Big Miniature Farms, where they turn out a wide variety of jams, cheesecakes, leafy greens and even biscuits and gravy, all using ingredients that travel from their farm to their kitchen, and ultimately to customers’ tables throughout northwest Illinois and beyond. The Yenneys believe in quality over quantity, preferring handmade and homemade, using tried and true methods that Travis’

Travis attended culinary school as a young adult and learned how different kinds of jams can compliment various dishes. He was particularly fond of the horseradish jam that he would make to set off a roasted pork loin. A few years ago, Travis decided to make a batch of horseradish jam and sell it at the fledgling farmers market in town. At first, just a few jars sold, but it didn’t take long for word of mouth to spread, and the Yenneys soon added jalapeno jam and cucumber jam. “It was something I had made a long time ago,” Travis said. “We decided to make some of those and take it to the farmers market. We had a tiny little tent with one jam, and everyone enjoyed it, so I thought, ‘Let’s keep making this.’” As the couple spent more time in the garden, Cami became interested in learning more ways to make it more productive. She learned about microgreens from an online farming group and became fascinated with them. Microgreens are tiny sprouts of vegetables and herbs that are packed with health benefits and grow relatively quickly — anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks. Though they take less time to grow, they require more attention than conventional greens. They need to be checked on throughout the day, a task the couple stays on top of, and when they’re out of town, they enlist friends and family to keep an eye on them.
There’s more than just microgreens and a menu of handmade goods to the Yenneys’ farm. It’s also home to a Jersey cow, donkeys and chickens. Someday, the couple would like to open a petting zoo on their small farm. “City folks could bring their kids to pet some donkeys and maybe learn a little something,” Travis said.

It all started with a jam ... The Yenneys’ business started with a few jars of jam and a farmers market, and has continued to grow from there, along with their selection of jams.
While they may be small in size, they’re big on nutrients. Microgreens are high in fiber, are packed with beta-carotene and lutein for better vision and immunity, and are good sources of potassium, iron, zinc, magnesium, copper and vitamins C, E and K. It didn’t take long for Cami to realize how beneficial microgreens can be for people, and they soon found a place alongside their jams at the farmers market table. “I started looking into them and thought: They are so interesting,” she said. “I didn’t know anyone around here that grew them and I had never heard of them before. I just got a trial thing and started growing them. It took
a lot a time of effort.” Don’t like broccoli? You might like a broccoli microgreen: One ounce of a broccoli microgreen is the equivalent to one pound of the fully grown version as far as nutrients are concerned, Cami said. It’s facts like that that Cami enjoys sharing at the market, and she’s come to know many repeat customers who not only come back for more but also introduce their friends to microgreens. “We’re able to educate people in town about them, and they love them,” Cami said. “We really can’t keep them around.”

Getting kids to eat their vegetables is easier with microgreens as well. “It’s great if you want better nutrition for kids, you can hide those in things such as sandwiches and smoothies, and you can put them in salads, too,” Travis said. “The health benefits are great, they’re delicious and they taste great. A lot of people who buy them are focused on the nutritional value.” The Yenneys put more on their plate, and customers’ plates, — when they opened their downtown kitchen in November 2020. The additional space led to more food offerings, including full-size and mini cheesecakes and parfaits. The crusts used for the cheesecakes are more of a cookie texture than a typical graham cracker style, and the eggs come from the Yenneys’ chickens, which are fed microgreens, making for healthier chickens that produce better eggs. While a rich and creamy cheesecake may be a guilty pleasure, the Yenneys can you make you feel a little less guilty about enjoying it. “We use better ingredients, and real ingredients such as organic cane sugar and our own eggs,” Travis said. “While we’re not providing health food [in that instance], we’re sourcing better ingredients for our foods.” Their biscuits and gravy are big sellers, too. They fly off of the farmers market table after only a couple of hours — “If you don’t get there early, it’s gone,” Travis said. The gravy is gluten-free, but it wasn’t like that when the Yenneys began selling it. The change eventually was made with no fanfare, and no one really noticed.

“We were going to make an announcement that we were going to switch it over to gluten-free gravy, but we decided to just wait because it tasted the same and we wanted to see if anyone noticed,” Cami said. “No one noticed at all. Then we let everyone know that it was gluten-free. Some people think that just because it’s gluten-free it may not taste the same, but it’s just some minor tweaks and changes.” Big Miniature’s items can be purchased year-round on their website, and specials are occasionally announced on its Facebook page. Pickup is available at their downtown kitchen Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. In addition, Big Miniature Farms also is part of the Jo Daviess Local Foods online farmers market network of vendors from northwest Illinois; pickup of products from it and other vendors in the network is from 5 to 6 p.m. every Tuesday at their kitchen. When Mount Carroll’s farmers market first began, the Yenneys were one of just a few vendors. Since then, the farmers market has grown, and the Yenneys’ business has grown right along with it. Today, the market is one of northwest Illinois’ largest, with about 30 vendors on most Saturdays, and nearly double that on holiday weekends. When the market returns for the season in May, the Yenneys will be back, right where it all started. The Yenneys saw 1,122 customers this year at their tables, Cami said, a big difference from their early days.

“We used to get excited in the beginning when we would sell 12 jars,” Cami said. “We’ve tried to go to other farmers markets, but we did not miss a single Mount Carroll Farmers Market this year because our customer base is so loyal. Even if people don’t come to the market every week, we have a lot of people who come and get four or five of their favorite jams, or biscuits and gravy. It’s not worth it for us to go anywhere else because we do so well here.” A patch of the Yenneys’ five-acre farm on Mill Street near Point Rock Park is dedicated to the assortments of vegetables used in their products, while the microgreens are grown under lights indoors. The farm also is home to a Jersey cow, appropriately named Jersey, and three donkeys: Lily, Hee-Haw and Wilbur. They envision their small farm being a petting zoo one day, where kids can visit and get to know the animals; also among the Yenneys’ future plans: a pumpkin patch and you-pick vegetable offerings. When it comes to the idea of a petting zoo, Travis was keeping residents of Lake Carroll in mind, especially those who have kids who may have never seen farm animals up close. “I’ve done some work there in the past and I know that there are quite a few parttimers from the City who come in, and how many of those people have kids who haven’t seen these kinds of animals,” Travis said. “City folks could bring their kids to pet some donkeys and maybe learn a little something.” Turning peoples’ tastebuds on to new flavors, and making it fun to teach them about their benefits — learning to enjoy and enjoying learning — it’s all part of the Yenneys’ growing business. “There are people who come by that are genuinely grateful that we have all of this, and it feels real good to offer something where people will say, ‘I’m so glad you have this because I once had this gluten-free and it tasted bad,’” Travis said. “When they’re genuinely grateful that it’s there, tastes good, and know that we put the time into it to make sure that it was good; that’s very valuable.” Cody Cutter can be reached at 815-632-2532 or ccutter@shawmedia.com.

usiness is good at Eastland Motor Sports all year around, but at this time of the year, things can really start to snowball. As autumn falls by the wayside, snowmobilers start to get revved up as winter brings the promise of powering through the powder — and the staff at the Lanark business start to gear up for customers who are looking to buy a new snowmobile, or get their current one ready to ride. The person putting them in the driver’s seat has seen a lot of customers come through his doors, but he still enjoys helping them find the right fit to go on the snow. Jeff Lessman is the longtime owner of Eastland Motor Sports, and he and his staff can set up customers young and old with just the right ride for the winter months, whether it comes with tracks or tires. Lessman has seen children as young as 5 start their winter riding adventures on smaller machines. A Shaw Media Publication | Lake Lifestyle | December 2023 | 35

Jeff Lessman, owner of Eastland Motor Sports in Lanark, has seen customers ranging from as young as 5 all the way up to retirement age get into snowmobiling. “I get a lot of enjoyment out of seeing someone that comes in and buys a new machine, seeing them enjoy it and the smile on their face.”
With top-of-the-line models such as Ski Doo and Arctic Cat found on its showroom floor, the store doesn’t just want to create a good snowmobiling experience, but a great one. And if a snowmobile needs serviced, they’re at your service, with a team of trusted techs that’ll get you up and running in no time. “We offer premium products with Ski Doo and Arctic Cat in the snowmobile lines,” Lessman said. “We strive to be extremely good with our customer service, and our service department is known to be quite knowledgeable with what they do. We try to keep enough parts in stock to keep everybody moving through the winter months, and provide a good selection of accessories and clothing.” The winter months get quite busy, not only with plenty of snowmobilers popping in, but people looking for ATVs, side-by-sides and plows. Come the warmers months, snowmobiles take a backseat and zero-turn lawnmowers fill the sales floor. Eastland also sells loading trailers year-round.

While warm weather is always a given once spring and summer roll around, the winter months can be a little less predictable. Jack Frost will always nip at our nose, but he isn’t always as generous with the white stuff. Some years, we’re snowed under while others just deliver a dusting. That kind of uncertainty can affect business, but Lessman has found that even when snow is a no-show, it doesn’t slow down snowmobilers. They’ll find a way to ride. “About two or three years ago when we had extremely good snow conditions, we actually saw people from Wisconsin come down here to ride our local trail system because they didn’t have any snow and we did,” Lessman said. “A vast majority of our customers, though, purchase machines and head north with them to chase the snow.” As with most any product, snowmobile makers always want offer the latest and greatest — more robust engines, improved suspensions, and in recent years, more tech has made its way into snowmobiles: GPS systems, Bluetooth tech, phone hookups.

New to the thrill of pushing through the powder and blazing trails? There’s more than just learning how to ride. Safety is key, and that includes dressing for the occasion, especially when that occasion is speeding through the cold of winter. You’ll need some toasty togs to keep you warm against the bluster of a blowing wind. Eastland carries a line of clothing and snowmobile gear that’ll keep riders safe and warm. Like the snowmobiles, riders’ gear has gotten better in recent years, but even with those improvements, the basics are still important. “You need to layer your clothing and have the right jackets, boots, pants and gloves; and have a proper helmet to prevent the face shield from fogging up,” Lessman said. “There’s nothing that will ruin a snowmobile ride faster than getting cold, or not

being able to see out your shield. Dress comfortably, stay warm, and you’ll enjoy it a hundred times more.” While snowmobile helmets aren’t the law in Illinois, that doesn’t mean riders should think about going without one. “A proper helmet is essential,” Lessman said. Get a wrong fit and “they’ll steam up and fog up like your windshield on your car without a defogger, and you’re done. A proper fitting helmet is going to squeeze just slightly, not enough to be uncomfortable, but you can’t shake your head and let it wobble around, either.”

Eastland Motor Sports opened in 1988 as a motorcycle repair shop, but business has grown from those early days, along with its reputation. The quality care Eastland’s staff provides hasn’t gone unnoticed. Can-Am, the maker of several lines of ATVs, side-by-sides and threewheelers, honored the Lessman’s shop with its Dealer of the Year Award among stores in Illinois for each of the past three years. Lessman likes the accolades, but it’s helping customers make memories that he loves. “I’ll get a call or an email a couple of days later sometimes, saying how much they really enjoy their machine and being thankful for supplying it for them,” Lessman said. “I get a lot of enjoyment out of seeing someone who comes in and buys a new machine, seeing them enjoy it and the smile on their face.” Cody Cutter can be reached at 815-632-2532 or ccutter@shawmedia.com.
