pring is in full swing now that April is here, and for many it couldn’t have come soon enough. A winter that just kept piling on (and on and on and on), along with the pandemic funk we’ve all been feeling, has left people itching for a fresh start – and they don’t have to go far to find one: It’s right in their backyard. That’s where they can watch springs and sprouts dig in and reach for the sky. As the last patches of snow melt away and the soil takes a gulp, it’s time to start thinking about bringing some color back to your landscape. That’s where the Lake Carroll Prairie Club’s annual native plant sale can help. The plants’ picturesque palette of colors – bright yellows, blazing purples, radiant reds, rich earth tones – can turn any landscape from drab to fab, and help the environment, too, with its grasses and flowering forbs.

Its name may sound a bit scary, but the Ohio spiderwort seen on these facing pages is far from frightening. Its bold purples punctuated with bright yellow anthers mak e it a beautiful addition to any native prai rier garden. The flower is one of dozens of plants available through Lake Carroll Prairie Club’s annual native plant sale . turn to pages 10 & 11 for a list of the plants and an order form.

Last year was the first for the sale, and it was successful enough that the Nature Club nearly doubled its offering of plants for this go-around. The sale runs through May 1, and features more than two dozen offerings. Nearly 1,200 plants from the first sale made it to yards and gardens throughout the community last year. “That’s pretty good considering Covid, and not many are full-time residents,” Nature Club Secretary Pam Richards said. Nature plays a big part of the lives of Pam and her husband, Jim. They’re also members of the Northwest Illinois Prairie Enthusiasts chapter and volunteer with the Northwest Illinois Audubon Society. Pam has worked with both groups on their prairies and learned a lot about the benefits of Prairie State plants.

A goldfinch sits among a field of purple coneflowers. Native prairie plants can be a magnet for birds like the goldfinch. According to an article in birdsandblooms.com, goldfinches’ diet consists almost entirely of seeds, and if you want to grow a garden that will attract them, seed-producing plants are essential. The brightly colored birds have a penchant for thistle seeds, and they’ll also seek out the seeds of sunflowers, black-eyed Susans, purple coneflowers and asters. They also gravitate toward grasses and weedy plants.

One of those benefits is that plants act as a natural filter to help keep cleanse the lake’s run-off before it meanders into the Mississippi River. Many native flowers can improve the water quality by filtering out contaminants and pollutants. Richards said the plant sale is not only a good way to spread the club’s love of nature, but it educates people about the important role plants play. It also helps advance the Nature Club’s mission: “To preserve and maintain the

prairies and woodlands of Lake Carroll to improve the quality of the community’s ecosystem.” The sale is just one part of the club’s efforts. Last year, for example, they donated 710 hours tending to various part of the community. “Education has been the number one goal of our club,” she said. “Native plants historically have a symbiotic relationship with the native insects, bushes, trees and wildlife, so we need natives to stabilize our ecosystem.”

“We have tried to explain that after removing the invasive honeysuckle, multifloral roses, or buckthorn, people may even discover they have wonderful spring ephemeral flowers underneath come to life as we have in our woods,” Richards said. “By planting these grasses and the wetland species, landowners can prevent chemicals and sediment from washing down into the lake and watershed.” As for the flowering members of nature’s family tree, they attract pollinators, anchor soils, sequester carbons, survive floods and droughts — and, Richards said, they’re “beautiful and fragrant.” After last year’s sale, she enjoyed seeing gardens pop up throughout the community, especially the larger ones in full bloom with a variety of different plants. Prairie plants typically take a couple of years to establish deep root systems, but the plants sold at the sale have plugs that are 2 years old with 5-inch roots. Lobelias, which are popular in cardinal red or great blue, also were popular; they prosper in wetter spots and are great in rain garden edges or at down spouts, Richards said. Last year’s sale had 15 forb and grass varieties, and now there are 26. In addition to more sedges and rushes, more woodland species have been added to the sale to accommodate the shady wooded areas around many residents’ homes. Proceeds go toward supplies for the Prairie Club, such as predators, pruners, loppers and herbicides; and help pay for supplies and equipment for prescribed burns. The club is also saving money for an educational kiosk along the lake prairie, and possibly more education stations.

URBANA, Ill. – Illinois is known as the “Prairie State” and has several native prairie plants. These plants are good options to include in the landscape because they evolved with the climate, soils, and pathogens in this habitat for thousands of years. Native prairie plant species have advantages: • Extensive root systems make prairie plants resistant to drought and dry conditions • Native prairie plants can reduce soil erosion. • Prairie plants have few insect and disease problems. • Once they’re established, prairie plants need minimum maintenance. • Prairie plants provide habitat for birds and other grassland animals. • Several native plants, such as milkweed,s are necessary for native insects. • Using native plants can cut down on exotic invaders to gardens. Prairie plants are best planted in the spring. Late fall is the best time to sow prairie plant seeds directly. You can purchase native plant species from reputable local nurseries or catalogs. Usually, plants from a local source are adapted to your area. Avoid digging native plants from the wild. While there are many noteworthy prairie plants, some favorites include prairie dropseed and little bluestem [both available through the Lake Carroll Prairie Club’s sale; see pages 10 & 11].

Prairie dropseed, also called northern dropseed, is a clump-forming, warm-season native grass. Prairie dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepsis), also called northern dropseed, is a clump-forming, warm-season native grass. The graceful arching leaves give the plant a fountain-like appearance. Prairie dropseed is a very good native grass for the landscape as it will tolerate a wide range of soils, including clay. Full height of the plant in flower is 2 to 3 feet, and its spread is 2 to 3 feet across. In late summer, open-airy flower heads appear on thin stems which rise above the clump of foliage. Pink and brown-tinted flowers are borne in sparse clumps at the end of the stem. The foliage turns golden with orange hues in the fall, fading to light bronze in the winter. The plant gets its name from the tiny rounded seeds, which drop to the ground in autumn when mature. Little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) has bluish stems that change from orange to russet red color throughout the fall and winter. Little bluestem’s common name refers to the bluish coloration at the base of the stem. It reaches a height of 2 to 4 feet and has a dense root system which may reach 5 to 8 feet deep. ake Carroll residents don’t have to go far to run into someone from the Lane Lovelies, Belles With Balls, Lucky Strikes, or the Bowling Stones. They probably live just down the road, or the lane. They’re members of the Lake Carroll Womens Bowling League and their chuckle-worthy team names aren’t the only reason they’re smiling. They also have a lot of fun dropping pins and picking up points. One of three leagues that meet each week at the Mount Carroll Bowling Center, the bevy of bowlers are ready to strike when the moment is right, which is each Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the bowling alley, where they enjoy the game and each others’ company and camaraderie.

Longtime member Barbara Anderson enjoys trying to recruit new bowlers to join in on the fun. “We encourage other people to bowl,” Anderson said. “We used to tell them, if they would say they’re not too good, ‘Good. Then you can show the rest of us up!’” More than 40 women ranging in age from their 50s to 80s make up the league. With travel restrictions, mitigations and precautions brought on by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, however, just 16 bowlers have consistently made the rounds as winter turned to spring. Bowlers are in four teams: the aforementioned Belles With Balls, Lane Lovelies, Lucky Strikes and Bowling Stones. The rest of the women are available as substitutes in case someone isn’t able to make it to a session. Eileen Gehrke, the league’s president and teammate with Anderson on Belles With Balls, also wouldn’t mind seeing more bowlers back at the alley once the pandemic eases.

ter where the numbers of the average fall, which is the case for league secretary Carol Margosein. “The competition level is low; you get to see people, and get to talk about your family, your spouses, Lake Carroll; it’s very social and fun,” Margosein said. “Some of the ladies are more competitive than others, but I’m not competitive. I compete with myself and have a good time for 3 hours every Wednesday afternoon.” Margosein, who has been with the league for nearly 5 years, is rolling around a 96 these days, but cracking three figures is always a great game. “I’m trying hard to keep that,” she said. They also enjoy picking up some extra pocket change, too — quarters and poker cards make for interesting side games to keep their competitive spirits up when they’re not bowling. No matter what happens when a ball meets the lane, there’s a good chance that everyone at the 8-lane alley notices when X marks the spot on the score sheet and someone makes a strike, or they’re on a hot streak with a multiple-strike “turkey.”

“We encourage even our opposing teams,” Anderson said. “When somebody does good, we go ‘Rah-rah!’ no matter what. They found it at the Mount Carroll Bowling Center, and it’s been home sweet home ever since. “These people couldn’t be better to us, they really are,” Gehrke said. “They’re as friendly as friendly can be.” What’s better than having fun on a weekly basis? “Fun days,” that’s what. Those days don’t see any scores logged, and can also involve different bowling games such as 9-pin no-tap. There’s usually one every year just before Christmas, accompanied by a luncheon. Some afternoons will see some of the ladies stick around at the alley after their games are over to continue socializing with each other. “It’s the people,” Gehrke said. You get to know a lot of people who live in Lake Carroll that you never got to know before, but love bowling.” Like her fellow league members, it’s something Donalee Yenney looks forward to. For her, bowling isn’t about competition or scores. “It’s more for fun,” she said. “I don’t worry about winning or losing, I’m just here for fun. Even after all these years, she still cherishes the memories of time spent with friends and family at the eight-lane bowling alley in her hometown. These days, the lifelong Mount Carroll resident is helping new generations make memories of their own at the Mount Carroll Bowling Center, where she’s been the bowling manager for the past 11 years. Scoring a strike, picking up a spare, the dreaded splits, and notching up the high score on one of the arcade games, memories like these are all in day’s work for staff at the bowling alley just a stone’s roll from the town’s courthouse square — and while “bowling” is a big part of the business, that’s not all it has to

“There are a lot of activities to do for a family,” Stingley said. “You can bowl, you can play the arcade games, there’s golfing, boxing and darts – there’s something for the whole family, and we try to make it as comfy as we can. “I want you to be able to come in and feel welcome.” Stingley and owner Billy VanDehey keep things rolling at the business. Stingley grew up when the lanes were made of wood and scoring was done by hand, meaning kids in the older leagues had to know that the frame score of a strike is 10 plus the next two rolls and add them up with a pencil and score sheet. While electronic scoring has become standard these days, part of the old alley remains: Some of the old wood has been refurbished into a bar counter, and the wood on the lanes is still there, but now it’s under the newer synthetic lanes to give lofted balls a little cushion (but don’t get any lofty ideas; lobbing lofts is discouraged, and there are large signs to remind you). “I do think we’re a diamond in the rough. I think there’s a lot of people around here that don’t even know we’re here, which is odd because this has been here since I was a kid, and that was 40-some years ago.” Another casualty of the times is the alley’s youth leagues, but that still hasn’t stopped people of all ages from rolling balls. “All of my friends came here,” Stingley said. “All of my

family came here. It’s always been home away from home. My sisters bowled here when I was a kid, too, and now we’re here running the place for other people to be able to come in and hopefully feel the same way, too.” There’s also a lot of history in the building itself, built in 1917. The bowling alley once was the Carroll Theater, and its basement once housed an auto repair shop. Double doors remain on both ends of the front of the building, which once handled theater traffic. “It’s got a huge amount of history to it,” Stingley said. “It’s kind of neat that we were able to keep it going.” Operating a small town bowling alley hasn’t been easy in recent years, and even more so during the recent coronavirus pandemic. League participation is down from its peak, but the alley still has some men’s and women’s leagues. In addition, a mixed doubles league used to meet on Sundays but that’s been halted with the pandemic. The folks in Mount Carroll, with a population at just under 2,000, help support their city’s bowling alley, but other small towns haven’t been as fortunate. After more than 70 years, Hilltop Lanes in Morrison, just 20 miles south of Mount Carroll, will close for good April 23. Spare Time Lanes in Lena, about 20 miles north of Lake Carroll, closed a few years ago. The mixed doubles league came over when Spare Time closed, and Stingley is hoping that players from Morrison will consider making a new home for their leagues in Mount Carroll.

Mount Carroll Bowling Center offers both regular and open bowling. The building the bowling alley is located in dates back to 1917 and once housed a theater. “It’s got a huge amount of history to it,” manager Jennifer Stingley said. “It’s kind of neat that we were able to keep it going.”

“I’m hoping we can get though this,” Stingley said. “It’s been real rough and we’ve got a lot of pieces to pick up after last year. So I’m hoping business picks back up again.” With VanDehey helping along the way, Stingley has been able to have less stress and keep the smiles coming each night. “I’m glad I got a good boss,” she said. “If I need something, he’s there. We have a great bank. You just chuck through the best you can. I’m just glad we’ve survived.” For those who aren’t looking to pin their hopes on racking up points on a league, bowling is also a great family activity that can help you stay in shape. It doesn’t involve a lot of cardio, but the steps, motions and throwing a more-than-10-pound bowling ball can give you a workout, regardless of your age. Even folks in their mid-80s are knocking down pins during league play.

The combination of two classics is just one of many examples of quirky combos that owner Refat Hasankolli and his team of creative cooks have come up with, and many times have successfully convinced the more timid taste-testers among its clientele to try – and like. Some people find some of the specialty burgers a little off-putting at first, but Hasankolli has some words of advice for the pickier patty people out there: “You just gotta try it.” “My sister once said, ‘Eww! You’re going to put that on?’” Hasankolli said, “But I just made one for her and said. ‘Just try it.’ She was like, ‘Oh my God that is awesome!’” “That’s what we do here,” he said.

It all starts with the meat, which comes fresh from the Carroll County locker just down state Route 73 in Lanark. Then comes the fun part: Figuring out what kinds of flavors to pair with the patty, even if it might not sound like a winning combination on paper. It’s what on the patty that counts. “It’s different, and that’s what makes us special,” Hasankolli said. “We are a destination restaurant. They’ve researched us.” Hasankolli, 44, of Freeport, has been in the restaurant business for nearly all of his adult life. He worked for his parents, Muhamet and Lutvije Hasankolli, who owned Snitzel’s Bavarian Restaurant in Freeport for 26 years until they retired in the mid-2000s. Hasankolli then got a job cooking and tending bar at the Yellow Creek Inn, the Brew and Chew’s former incarnation owned by Scott Gross.

After honing his creativity in the kitchen, he took over the restaurant when Gross sold it in 2014, and got down to making some changes. “Now I could do what I wanted to do,” Hasankolli said. “There really was nowhere where I really liked to go out and eat much, so how could I take stuff to the next level? I wanted to go with gourmet stuff, but that went over people’s heads. People like down-home food: burgers and pizzas. What made me different? I wanted to do signature-style.” The pizzas didn’t last long, but they were a big lesson on trying things out to see what works. It’s an approach he and his staff have stuck with as they work on making their menu items as distinctive and delicious as possible.

Every couple of weeks, the staff will meet and discuss new items; if they pass the taste test and it’s feasible to add them to the menu, it’ll take a trial spin as a “Burger of the Month.” If successful, it will graduate to a regular menu item. “At least when you come once a month, there’s going to be something different for sure, whether it’s a cocktail or a Sandwich of the Month,” Hasankolli said. “You can’t eat everything in one sitting.” The menu consists any given day of at least 18 different burgers and 15 different sandwiches that also are unique in their own right. For those who prefer poultry to patties, chicken can be substituted upon request, or you can go meatless by replacing the meat patty with a seasoned portobello mushroom. Gluten-free buns also are available. One of the Brew and Chew’s more daring creations was a seasonal belly buster that it offered around New Years: the Anti-resolution Burger. It originally was called the Wilford Brimley – named for the longtime late actor perhaps best known to the younger generation for his distinct pronunciation of the word “diabetes” in life insurance commercials – and consisted of a donut bun, a burger patty, a sausage patty, a pancake, bacon, french fries, cheese, and cinnamon butter in the donut hole on top of the burger.

“It was the worst, but it was the best,” Hasankolli said. “That was a hit, and it was fun.” Hasankolli also likes to spice things up for special holiday offerings, like The Reaper burger – a Carolina reaper pepper and cheddar-infused patty with sriracha bourbon, chipotle, mayo and fried jalapeño strings. And then there was his “Thanksgiving dinner on a bun,” The Gobbler: shaved turkey topped with corn stuffing, cheddar cheese, sweet potato fries, cranberry sauce and homemade gravy on a bun. A party of two can get two different burgers and cut them in half and trade one half, and have a plate of fries to share on top of that. “I like the idea of hanging out and sharing, that’s kind of my vibe,” he said. “It makes it fun. A lot of couples come here and they get to try different stuff. When I can open people’s minds, that’s my favorite part.” He also enjoys seeing whether customers can rise to a challenge. Adding to its food and fun vibe, the Brew and Chew invites customers to take on The Mega-America Burger Challenge or the Death Wing Challenge. The burger quest consists of a burger with three patties, six bacon slices, six cheese slices, pickles, onions, lettuce and lots of fries on the side. Those who chow it all down in 20 minutes win a free T-shirt; complete it all in record time – which stood at just less than 5 minutes as of mid-March – and the meal is on the house.

The death wings are dressed with a potent in-house wing sauce and diners have 5 minutes to eat an order with no drinks, no dipping sauces and no napkins, using only their teeth to strip the wings clean. But even after the last bite, the death-defying challenge still isn’t done: then they have to sit for 5 minutes and let their tongue sizzle. While there’s plenty of chewing going on, there’s also plenty brewing: a cocktail lineup; lemon shakeups; craft beer from nearby Lena, Wishful Acres and Generations breweries; and there’s even Samuel Smith from Yorkshire, from one of the world’s oldest breweries. Most of the restaurant’s customer base comes from more than 20 miles away; Hasankolli estimates that only about 30 percent are locals. That’s a figure he didn’t quite expect to see when he first opened. Surprises often come in the food service business, and Hasankolli has had his fair share of positive news, such as the time the Illinois Beef Association honored the Brew and Chew with its “Best Beef Burger” award in 2017. Hasankolli didn’t know anything about such an award at the time. “I knew I had a niche, but I didn’t know it was going to ever be like that. That’s become pretty cool. We try to make it an experience to come here. We’re not like a fast food place, and I don’t want it to be that. I’m not trying to be cheap or expensive. I’m just giving quality food at the prices I need to charge for them.”

He also plays in a quartet of local bands: KillBourn, the Alice in Chains tribute band Rooster, the Chris Cornell tribute band Black Hole Sun, and 2Guys 1Cup. The band gigs also help give him a steady income during the ups and downs of being in business. “I think I’m successful because of the knowledge I learned from my parents, but also from the stuff I’ve learned from playing in bands,” Hasankolli said. “With a band, it’s a lot talent and marketing. Pretty much, anymore, I’m a marketer. My focus is getting people through the door.”

Lake Carroll resident Tom Stangl cast an eye to the sky during a trip to Lock and Dam 13 on Feb. 20 with his wife, Rosanne, and captured some eagle photos. According to the state’s tourism website, enjoyillinois.com, Illinois is home to more wintering American bald eagles than any other state outside of Alaska. An estimated 3,000 of the majestic birds take a winter vacation in the Prairie State, settling in among the cliffs and trees in at least 27 counties along the state’s rivers, especially the Illinois and Mississippi. The Thomson area along state Route 84 – about 20 miles southwest of Lake Carroll – is a favorite spot for eagle watchers. Lock and Dam 13, just north of Fulton off Route 84, is an excellent location to eagle watch, with its abundance of tall trees and prime hunting spots for the eagles – among the waters where they snag fish. Vehicle access to the Lock and Dam facility is restricted, but an access road will take you to the Visitor Overlook. Limited parking is available.
