The Hagi & Baker Funeral Home has been serving the Streatorland area since 1895. Its history begins in the community of Ransom and then a second location in Streator in the 100 block of South Park Street in 1920. John J. “Jack” Hagi then purchased the residence at 205 High Street in 1936 and moved the funeral home into that facility. It is the oldest standing home in Streator having been built in 1873. It was built by Martin J. Overholt at the cost of $10,000. Mr. Overholt died in 1877. The home was then purchased by E.H. Bailey, paymaster of the Streator Coal Company. Additions were later added in 1950 to construct a larger chapel, preparation room and lounge. Jack operated the funeral home along with the assistance of his son-in-law John Kerestes, until Jack’s passing in 1974. John continued the business, along with his wife Mary Hagi-Kerestes, until his passing in 2013. Mary passed away in 2016. Bryan M. Baker, who was born and raised in Streator, became a funeral director in 1989. He graduated from Streator Township High School in 1987 and then graduated from Worsham College of Mortuary Science in 1989. He is the son of Morton “Russ” Baker of Streator and the late Nancy (Hagie) Baker. Bryan had owned and operated another funeral home in Streator until moving away for nine years. He returned home in September of 2016 to purchase the Hagi Funeral Home from Kyle Kerestes, also a funeral director and the son of John and Mary Kerestes. Bryan has two children, Colin Russell Baker, age 13 and Margaret “Maghie” Irene Baker, age 12, both who are in grade school. He also has three sisters, Diane Bauer, Cindy (J.J.) Neiggemann and Amy (Terry “Oly”) Oelschlager, all of Streator and a twin
