James McAvoy: A versatile star with humble roots By Shona Dustan TV Media

er “Wanted,” starred with Oscar winners Helen Mirren and Christopher Plummer in “The Last Station” (2009) the following year, and voiced characters in two animated films in 2011 (“Gnomeo & Juliet” and “Arthur Christmas”). In 2011, he starred in “X-Men: First Class” as Charles Xavier, and he reprised the role in four huge sequels. McAvoy didn’t just take on lucrative roles in blockbuster franchises, though. His resume is as well rounded as they come, featuring independent films such as the experimental “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby” (2013), the critically acclaimed “Filth” (2013) and the psychological thriller “Trance” (2013). In 2015, he had long flowing locks as the title character in Paul McGuigan’s “Victor Frankenstein,” and the following year he had a shaved head for what some critics call his most impressive role yet — the splintered personality that makes up the terrifying killer in M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split” (2016). He reprised that fractured role earlier this year in “Glass,” alongside Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson. McAvoy is more prolific than ever these days, and you can see him on both big screen and small right now: he stars in “It: Chapter Two,” which is in theaters now, and in HBO’s new fantasy series “His Dark Materials,” which premieres Monday, Nov. 4, on the cable channel.

When Scottish actor/director David Hayman (“Taboo”) came to a young James McAvoy’s Glasgow high school for a Q&A, the boy’s interest in the navy and the priesthood began to fade, and a new dream was born. McAvoy offered to help out on one of Hayman’s film sets, and that offer has spiraled into an incredible career. Hayman gave him his very first part — a secondary but scene-stealing role in “The Near Room” (1995) — when he was only 16 years old, and even though he had never participated in any sort of drama or theater before, he hit it out of the park. This led him to become a member of the PACE Youth Theater and to study at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He was tenacious and determined and spent almost 10 years auditioning for small roles in television and film, landing some memorable parts, such as Pvt. James W. Miller in “Band of Brothers” and Leo Atreides II in “Children of Dune.” In 2004, he stepped into the role of Steve McBride, boyfriend and eventual husband of Fiona Gallagher in the original U.K. series “Shameless.” Though he was only in the series for two seasons, it was all the exposure he needed — he landed several major roles in quick succession, starting with Mr. Tumnus, the fawn, in “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” (2005). Next, he starred alongside Forest Whitaker in the Oscar-winning film “The Last King of Scotland” (2006), was the romantic lead in the quirky “Penelope” (2006), and was Anne Hathaway’s love interest in “Becoming Jane” (2007). His role in “Atonement” (2007) — another Oscar-winning film — cemented McAvoy’s position as an A-list actor, and he’s been in demand ever since.
