Illuminating Student Talent PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY CUNNINGHAM JR.
More than 2,200 Durham community members gathered at the Durham Performing Arts Center on Feb. 21 for An Evening to Shine, a scholarship fundraiser co-hosted by Durham Public Schools and the Durham Public Schools Foundation. Pierce Freelon emceed the evening, which featured choral and dance performances and visual art by 500 students from across the school district. Special guests gathered beforehand for a reception catered by Northern High School’s culinary arts program, and student artwork was on display throughout the DPAC lobby. The event brought in $50,000 in ticket sales, and all net proceeds support the The Durham Promise scholarship fund, which operates on the belief that every DPS student deserves an equitable, debt-free college education. 5
