Several of the Chinese lots are additional material procured for MacMurray College in the 1920s and 1930s by a Yale Road Scholar instructing at Chicago's Asian Art Institute. The collection’s assembly was commissioned by the school for its International Studies Program under the direction of esteemed professor, Dr. Wallace N. Stearns. Selkirk is thrilled to again offer these significant artifacts from the institution's archives plus choice additions from private national collections.

COURTNEY & TENNANT CIVIL WAR NAVAL OFFICER'S DOLPHIN-HEAD SWORD BY ROBERT MOLE & SONS, BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND Rare Confederate regulation pattern sword. Wire wrapped sharkskin grip with scaled backstrap leading to the finely detailed dolphin head, behind the hinged hilt decorated with crossed cannons, anchor and floral sprays. Blade agent marked "Courtney & Tennent - Charleston S C", with inset gilt "Proof" mark opposite and "MOLE" marked on top of the blade. The 30.5" etched blade shows the hard to see familiar pattern of foliate designs, cotton plants and Confederate first national flag. Estimate: $5,000 - $10,000
