Industry pioneers share the wisdom and insights gained across 30 years in self storage.

Thirty years is a special milestone for the Self Storage Association of Australasia (SSAA) and the industry. We were pleased to host a panel of industry pioneers at SSAA GC22. It was a privilege to hear from our esteemed panellists, all of who have helped shape self storage into the successful and thriving industry it is today.
Richard Whalan, Managing Director, Rent A Space
Richard is one of the industry’s earliest pioneers, having opened his first self storage facility in 1979. He talked about what drew him to self storage and why he continues to serve the industry 30 years later.
Sam was at the first meeting of the Association, held at the Hotel Lawson in Sydney. He shared what he remembers about the meeting, his father’s influence, the spirit of the industry and where the opportunities are for the sector
Michael Tate, Chief Executive Officer, Storage King
Michael shared advice for those entering the industry and reflected on his dedication to transforming self storage into a retail business with a clear focus on the customer.
Andrew Catsoulis, Managing Director, National Storage
The ASX listing of National Storage marked a new chapter for self storage. Andrew Catsoulis shared his original vision, and his experience of how being listed continues to shape the sector.

As an experienced valuer, David has seen the industry from a different perspective. He shared his insights on the changes he’s seen as self storage has matured into a sought-after institutional and investment-grade asset class.

In the mid-1990s, Liz flew to all corners of the country, rallying facilities to join the SSAA. She shared some highlights from her experience on how working together and collaboration were key to the success of the Association and the industry at large.
SSAA Documentary Special
A group of dedicated foundation members, life members and long-time supporters of the SSAA contributed to a documentary that celebrates the story of self storage in Australasia and features some of the most influential figures in our industry to date. The three-part documentary series is available on the SSAA website, with an archive of 30th video interviews and stories in print. This archive is an important record of our Association and industry history, and we thank all those involved, with special thanks to Life Member Dallas Dogger and the R6 Digital team who produced the documentary.
