desperate when they call me in their search for a doctor. I often say: “I’m just the fundraiser!” In my job, I’ve learned so much about healthcare issues (thanks to much help from Dr. Google), and I’ve talked to many local doctors about the issues they and the Saanich Peninsula Hospital face. Unfortunately, this doesn’t give me any additional clout in helping friends and acquaintances find one. While I might be of no help in that respect, I have been watching the problem of physician shortages grow and develop for many years and have tried to figure out a way to be useful. And Foundation Board members, also seeing the problem, have long advocated for more students and residents in our community to “test the waters” before setting up a practice (I mean, who wouldn’t love it here, if only they tried it for a bit!). The South Island Division of Family Practice, which is a notfor-profit society led by and for family physicians practicing in the South Vancouver Island area, was also keenly aware of the problem of physician shortages due to retirements and their members began discussing what could be done. They very generously included me in some early deliberations where I quickly assumed the role of cheerleader (“you find the solution and I’ll fundraise for it”). These discussions led to the founding of the Saanich Peninsula Primary Health Care Society, and the recruitment of several community members who wanted to help build it.
