The grant must be matched with $250,000 from the beneficiary organization; the entire project is estimated to carry a price tag of $7.5 million. The Sultana Historical Preservation Society recently identified the historic 1938 Marion High School gymnasium as the location for the new expanded museum and has acquired an 1840-era engine from the steamboat LeRoy for its collection, as well as a memorial plaque presented to Capt. William Shields Friesner commemorating his survival of the incident. The wooden sidewheeler Sultana was launched on 3 January at the John Litherbury Boat Yard in Cincinnati, Ohio. The steamer was 260 feet long with a beam of 42 feet and fitted with 34-foot-diameter Moore and Richardson waterwheels and

The Sultana explosion was the greatest maritime disaster prior to the sinking of the Titanic and the attack on Pearl Harbor. four side-by-side tubular boilers. Designed to carry 376 passengers, she was carrying 100 passengers plus an estimated 2000– 2400 (accounts vary) prisoners of war being returned to the Union side.
