In April, Rear Admiral Melissa Bert assumed duties as the Judge Advocate General and Chief Counsel of the Coast Guard; she is the first woman to hold this office. In her new role, she will lead a group of legal professionals responsible for the delivery of all legal services in support of the Coast Guard’s missions, its units, and its personnel. RADM Bert is a graduate of the US Coast Guard Academy and George Washington University Law School. She is
also the founder of the Women’s Leadership Initiative supporting mentoring and professional development for Coast Guard women in uniform and civilians. Amy Lent, the museum’s executive director, shared that the museum staff had been working for months on a project to get nearly all of their collections online when the COVID-19 crisis hit, so they were in a good position to launch educational programming and online exhibits when the museum shut down.
