Seaford Christmas Magic – a little windswept but enjoyed by many! Seaford Town Council hosted this year’s Seaford Christmas Magic on Saturday 4th December. High winds did mean that plans had to be changed at the last minute but thankfully residents and visitors were still able to appreciate what the town centre and traders had to offer, and enjoy festive music, lantern-making workshops, the lantern parade and the Christmas light switch-on. Children were delighted to be invited to make beautiful Pick & Mix pattern lanterns in Mercread Youth Centre Hall with SCIP (Sussex Contemporary Illustrators & Printers) ahead of the magical Lantern Parade. The parade saw children proudly marching their lanterns through the town centre, joined by Mr Wonka himself! The parade finished with the children joining in the countdown with the Mayor of Seaford and Seaford Rotary Father Christmas to switch on the sparkling Christmas lights. A variety of live music captivated the visitors in The Crouch at the performance stage hosted by Shannon Smith, with a mix of vocalists, musicians and other contemporary performances throughout the day. Seaford Town Football Club opened their bar to the public and supported the festivities with some warming mulled wine. The Highland Joker Bubble Extraordinaire was busy with lots of fascinated children enjoying the bubble shows throughout the day. Families were encouraged round the town as part of the Golden Ticket Trail. 13 independent shops took part by displaying a Golden Ticket and a letter in their window display to combine together to make a word. Once the trail had been completed, Scoop & Weigh handed out a surprise gift in exchange for the golden word! If the above wasn’t enough, Party Emporium joined in with its Santa’s Grotto (which is being hosted in weekends throughout December – booking required), welcoming a number of stalls to trade inside the shop, away from the elements, and helping organise the Golden Ticket Trail. The day was topped off nicely with a screening of family-favourite, Arthur Christmas, at Seaford Barn Theatre.
6
In addition to the Christmas Magic event itself, Seaford Town Council and Seaford Chamber of Commerce hosted the annual window display competition for all shops in Seaford town. This year the competition was judged by the Chamber of Commerce’s President, Claire Davis, and the Mayor of Seaford, Councillor Rodney Reed. First prize was won by ‘Foam & Fabrics’ on Broad Street and the two runners up were Ambers Florist and INLE Home. A huge thank you is extended to all who have taken part and helped inject some jolliness into the town centre. On behalf of the town, the Town Council wishes to thank all those who came and made Christmas Magic so festive, and to all the visitors who visited those stallholders that were able to relocate at the eleventh hour to Life Church in Steyne Road. Due to last minute forecasts of high gusts throughout the day, it was deemed to be unsafe to use stalls outdoors and the decision was made to seek an indoor setting for those stallholders that were able to do so. Special thanks go to the volunteers of the Seaford Christmas Magic Committee, Sussex Events, Shannon Smith for hosting the live entertainment stage, Seaford Bonfire Society for marshalling, SCIP for lantern making, Party Emporium for hosting a grotto, rehousing some children’s entertainment stalls and organising the Golden Ticket Trail with Scoop & Weigh, Seaford Rotary for Santa and his Sleigh, and the Mayor of Seaford and Santa for the Christmas lights switch-on, Life Church for hosting the stallholders, Seaford Town Council staff and all the stallholders who made the day possible. Cllr. Rodney Reed, Mayor of Seaford praised everyone involved for holding Christmas Magic this year despite the forecast inclement weather and the last-minute relocations it made necessary. ‘The sight of many children walking up Broad Street with the lanterns they had just made, and the noise the children made during the ‘countdown’ and ‘switch-on’ will stay with me as happy memories for a long time.’ Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

Seaford Photographic Society November’s programme started with an informal fun competition judged by members, on the subject of ‘Autumn Colours’, and Janice Hewitt’s wild mushroom image ‘Fly Agaric’ proved most popular. Well done also to new member Jenny Morkel who took second place. Simon Watkins’ squirrel photo was the third most popular. The fourth round of the PDI league competition for Projected Digital Images had nearly 50 entries. Many thanks to Pat Couder CPAGB BPE1 QPSA who stepped in at the last minute when the judge we had booked couldn’t make it due to illness. In the standard group only two images were awarded the maximum score of 20/20 and these came from Stephen Day and Peter Cavanagh. Simon Watkins scored a 20 in the advanced group, with another of his superb nature images, as did Jennie Edwards with her atmospheric misty morning river scene. The PDI league competition has 5 rounds and members can enter two photos into each round. The overall winner is decided by counting everybody’s five highest scoring images. At this stage the scores were very close in both groups, so there was all to play for going into the final round. Liz Fitzsimons and Michael Chapman both scored 20s in the standard group, but it is often those scoring 18 or 19 in the final round that can decide the overall winner. When the dust had settled, Michael Chapman, David Nickalls and Colin Hammond all tied for first place with scores
8
of 95! In such cases the next highest scoring images are also taken into account and the atmosphere was very tense while everybody waited for Simon to do the calculations. Congratulations to David Nickalls who took the top spot by one point when the 6th-highest scores had been taken into account…but Peter and Colin were still joint second. With the 7th-highest- scoring images counted, this was still the case! In the end, after taking into account the 8th-highest-scoring images, Peter took second place. In the advanced group there was again a tie for first place, between Simon Rigby and Simon Watkins, both with 99 points. With the 6th- and 7th-highest scores taken into account, Simon Watkins took the overall win by 1 point. Well done to David and Simon, and what an exciting end to the league competition! We had another excellent Zoom talk to end the month, by Mike Martin EFIAP AWPF and entitled ‘It’s Not What You See, It’s What You Make’. Photography is about so much more than just capturing what you see through the viewfinder and this inspiring lecture showed how to combine parts of different photos into montages. Mike showed us many examples and even went through a live Photoshop edit to produce an artistic and creative image that was so much more than the original. You can see all you need to know about the club on our website www.seafordps.org, including all the latest news, programme of events, successful images, competition results, and more. It is updated every week. Bringing Women Together
NWR was formed in 1960, in the days when marriage and children generally meant that a woman’s career and other creative or intellectual pursuits took a back seat. Times have changed, but NWR still provides a much-needed network for women to find like-minded friends with whom to explore ideas, discuss interests and embark on new activities.
How Does it Work?
There are groups across the country, each of which organises its own programme of events. These are wide ranging, often reflecting members’ interests and concerns, but a typical programme might include: discussions and debates – the Future of Feminism, Brexit, What did your Mother do in the War? the Climate Crisis and many more; book groups, poetry evenings, play readings, gardening and walking groups; talks from outside speakers – Refugee Action, Bee Keeping, Alcohol and Addiction, Plastic and Pollution, Chocolate etc. There
are also research sessions, board games, music evenings, walks and garden visits, theatre outings, trips to galleries and places of local interest. Meetings are informal and generally take place in members’ homes. In addition, some groups organise regional events bringing together members from different areas.
A National Network
As the name suggests, NWR is a national organisation, so wherever you find yourself, there will be a group of livke-minded women keen to welcome you. Also on offer are national events for all those who wish to take part, together with active Facebook groups. The National Women’s Register brings women together for friendship, fun, lively discussion and activity. Come along and try us – we could be just what you are looking for!
How do I join?
We suggest that prospective members take part in two sessions before joining. For more information: Website: nwr.org.uk Seaford Email: nwrmemberseaford@ btinternet.com. Leaflets in: Seaford Library and Seaford Tourist Information Centre in the Police Station, Church Street. Stephanie Chalmers

Is Equity Release safe? Yes, equity release is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), providing protection and security. Premier advisers have specialist Equity Release qualifications. The FCA says that all promotions must be clear, fair, balanced and not misleading. This should make choosing between plans relativity easy, as information has to be given in such a away that you can compare details. These rules give further protection, security and, if need be, access to compensation schemes. As an extra safeguard, Premier is a member of the Equity Release Council (ERC) and recommend ERC approved plans.

Seaford Choral Society is back with its first concert in two years! Since Covid, singing has become something of an extreme sport. The projection of aerosols, number of people, and its indoor nature, puts choral singing right up there with nightclubbing and aerobics as dangerous pastimes during a viral pandemic. We were less than two weeks away from our spring concert in March 2020 when our committee made the tough decision to shut down, even before the first official Lockdown. After a few months we joined the virtual revolution and tuned into Zoom rehearsals. It kept us singing and was a lifeline for many. We started rehearsals again in Seaford Baptist church this September and have taken all precautions to keep each other safe. It’s taken some adapting to, but it turns out singing in masks is easier and sounds better than you’d think. We dressed up warm so we could keep the doors open; the sopranos (in the worst of the draft) wrapping themselves in car blankets on the coldest nights. But it’s been worth it – we’ve not had a single covid case and have been able to keep singing together all term. We decided a full concert would not be safe but dressed up in our concert finery and invited a small audience to St Leonard’s church for our final rehearsal on Monday 22nd November. The choir spaced out in the pews and our audience sat in the choir stalls and behind us in the back rows. Then we stood up and sung our way through the concert programme. It still felt like a proper performance and was an emotional experience. We sang our hearts out in the joyful masterpiece that is Vivaldi’s Gloria; our conductor Colin Hughes nearly falling off his podium in his efforts to keep us all together despite our distance from the organ. We had a rest while our accompanist John Eady mesmerised us with Bach’s Fantasia for organ. John told us about the piece so we could hear as we were cast down into hell in the second movement and rose with the flames licking round our feet in the third. Then finally, Haydn’s Missa Sancti Nicolai. I love the
16
range of music we learn with SCS and this is a beautiful, but rarely heard piece with glorious soaring melodies (the sopranos really get a workout!) and complicated harmonies to test all parts. Highlights were the spontaneous round of applause our audience gave us when we ‘landed feet together’ at the end of the complicated runs of Amens in the Gloria, and listening to our whole tenor section sing the beautiful solo from the start of the Credo. With no ticket sales we couldn’t afford soloists, but it gave us the unique opportunity to perform several of the solos together as a choir. The wonderful mezzo soprano Rebecca Hughes also treated us to some of the soprano and alto solos. So, Seaford Choral Society is back and sounding better than ever. Join our Facebook page so you don’t miss our next concert (which we hope to be able to invite you to). If you’d like to join us, we welcome all members and start rehearsals again on January 10th. Win £2,500 cash to help get your business idea started!
Have you got a business idea you’d like to turn into a reality?
Sara was taught to knit by her aunt when she was eight years old, and as a result she spent many happy hours creating lace, cross-stitching and tapestries. As an adult, she wanted to develop her passion into a business she could share with other people, so she created The Patchwork Cat Café & Shop in Newhaven. Whether you need a pin, or a large cutting mat, Sara and her team can help at The Patchwork Cat; you can learn how to create amazing patchworks, purchase materials and enjoy tea, coffee and homemade snacks. Christina Ewbank, the Chief Exec of Edeal Enterprise Agency said: ‘Whenever you start a new business, always choose to do something you love. The Patchwork Cat café and shop does just that, and so Sara won £2,500 to help her share her passion for creativity with all her customers.’ Statistics show approx. 660,000 new start-ups register in the UK every year; sadly 80% of businesses fail in year one. The reason is simple: starting up a new business can often lead to unexpected surprises. You might be the best designer, florist, chef, or film maker, but will you need legal advice, marketing guidance and financial support? Who can you turn to for impartial, honest advice? More importantly, at the very start of your journey, it is crucial to create a business plan that outlines who you are, what you do, who your customers are and how your business works. That’s why the LEAP programme has been so valuable for so many business people in the Lewes District. This free, comprehensive business start-up programme provides workshops, seminars, 1 to 1 mentoring and a chance of winning a cash prize of £2,500.

Since 2013, residents have been supported to turn their business dreams into reality including massage therapists, haberdasheries, gardeners, handymen, social media gurus and health and safety consultants, to name a few. The overall winner receives the accolade of LEAP Entrepreneur of the Year and a £2,500 cash prize which will be presented at a Business Awards Dinner.

Seaford Town Council
Renaturing proposals for Seaford
Seaford Town Council is giving nature the respect it deserves by embracing the renaturing proposals within the town. The Town Council is taking the next step within the important stewardship role it has to play, as it commits to renaturing certain open spaces across the town. The Town Council’s Community Services Committee met in November 2021 to discuss a variety of business. Stealing the show however was the agenda item relating to mowing and planting regimes around the town. It has now been agreed that a number of Town Council owned sites will see a change in the way they are maintained; for some the whole site will change and for others, pockets will change such as edges or corners of the land being renatured. The changes are through the introduction of reduced mowing or, in some cases, just cut and collect once or twice a year, and a move towards using more native or perennial plants, with the aim of increasing biodiversity, enriching the green corridor across the town and assisting in tackling climate change. In addition to this, other decisions were made surrounding planting and maintenance of other sites. This included allowing a project to be undertaken to begin community food growing in the flower beds at the top of Pelham Road and introducing the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee colours into the bedding planting scheme around the town for 2022, which is always traditionally vibrant and welcoming. The Town Council began its renaturing journey in 2020 and has learned valuable lessons since. The proposals adopted will ensure that none of the sites are left to completely ‘rewild’ and instead will strive to achieve a balance of being renatured and the increase in wildlife this brings, while still looking cared for. In many cases, this will include maintaining mown pathways across the land
to ensure people can continue to enjoy their local open spaces. This decision has meant that the Town Council can be proud to provide a varied balance of green spaces across the town, from sports pitches and recreational spaces to wildlife-friendly meadows and traditional planting displays – all for the benefit of and use by the local community. The Town Council extends its gratitude to the volunteers and groups that have shared invaluable advice and drawn on a wealth of knowledge to help devise the proposals that were adopted, including Seaford Community Partnership, Seaford Environmental Alliance, On the Verge, Seaford Natural History Society and Lewes District Council. Speaking about the proposals made, Councillor Olivia Honeyman as Chair of the Community Services Committee said: ‘It has been fantastic to see the Town Council rising up to the challenge where tackling climate change and enhancing biodiversity is concerned, most recently with the incredibly exciting renaturing proposals that have been adopted. We are so lucky to have a number of fantastic groups and individuals within the town, who care so passionately about this and are so knowledgeable – there is no reason why this can’t be a success. We just hope that the Town Council’s efforts may help encourage and empower residents in our community to look at undertaking similar renaturing projects in their own outdoor spaces!’ For the full details of which sites were discussed, visit the Town Council’s website and view the agenda and minutes of the Community Services Committee meeting on 25th November 2021. Refill says Happy New Year! Another year has gone by and our Refill family has grown in so many places. You may have seen elsewhere in the Press that Peacehaven has opened its first water fountain at The Dell and I was very pleased indeed to be invited to the Event. We also hear that fundraising for more in Eastbourne is going well. Over in Seaford you may have noticed that Brewster’s Coffee Company has relocated from High and Over to the South Barn. (photo above). Jon has some water you can have to refill your bottles and if you remember your reusable cup he will give you a discount on his delicious hot drinks. What is more, on a Thursday you can get one for free by collecting a bag of litter. We really wish visitors would treat the Nature Reserve and National Park with more respect, but sadly many don’t. You can sit in the side barn to enjoy your drink and the yummy cakes he serves.
The Refill family and message is now spreading around the country and across the world, so let’s keep it going. Let us know on our Facebook group if you spot one in a far-flung place. Do let us know via our email below if you run or know of a business that wants to join the scheme or offers refills for coffee etc. They can sign themselves up using the app or website and add the coffee cup icon. Please don’t forget you can download the Refill app to get the location maps to find Refill points: https://www.refill. org.uk/get-the-refill-app/ and also register your business and others if you have their permission. If you want a Chilly’s bottle or food container which makes a great gift, you can buy one of these yourself to keep your lunch and drinks hot or cold from refill.org.uk/buy-a-bottle/ and Chilly’s make a £10 donation to the Refill campaign. In the last 4 years, awareness has increased and so many of you have taken on board the need to say goodbye to single-use plastic water bottles, for which we and the environment thank you. Even so the litter picking continues, and we are so appreciative of our council teams and residents who do this. I am sure you are all aware that much of it is from take-away drinks.

Does Planning Permission Add Value to Your Home What are your plans for 2022? If you’re weighing up moving against home improving this article will be of interest. A question we often get asked is whether being granted planning permission adds value to a property? The quick answer to this is nearly always a yes. Here are four ways being granted planning permission can add value to your property:
Lofty ambitions – Adding an extra bedroom
A loft conversion that adds an extra bedroom, especially with an ensuite bathroom, can be reasonably expected to add up to 15% to your property’s value. In some cases, loft conversions might not need permission due to something called Permitted Development. But ALWAYS check with a local architect first. Possible value added: Between 10% and 15%.
Create space by converting a garage
The big one – Converting a house into flats
Being granted planning permission to split a property into separate living accommodations is a brilliant way to maximise value. This gives you the option of converting it yourself and renting the flats out or selling the property with the granted permissions to a property developer. Possible value added: Between 15% (conservative) and 40% (ambitious). If you know you’re going to sell the property at some point in the short term (12–18 months), it’s possible that simply having the permission granted will add value to your home. And remember, it’s wise to contact a local architect to see how feasible your ideas are. We can recommend someone to you. Thanks for reading and we wish all our clients and readers of the Seaford Scene a Happy New Year!
Stephen and Andrew
A garage has so much more potential than that for which it was initially built. Converting it is a wonderful way to add more living space to your home and a popular trend in Seaford. Possible value added: Between 7% and 15%.
Side or rear extension
Extending to the side or rear of your existing home can often be done without planning permission. But again, it’s always wise to check with an architect and your local authority before you start anything. Possible value added: Between 10% and 20%.

Late night signs that may signal dementia Retirement can be a blissful release from the stresses and strains of work and responsibility, whether to your work colleagues, your family or yourself. It is also a time of great change and readjustment to a new and potentially very exciting time of fresh challenges and pursuits, as well as long-put-off dreams finally realised. Research by Dementia UK has concluded that whilst we are also at an advancing age, personality changes after people retire could signal the early presence of dementia. Spotting the symptoms early on can be key to getting the best treatment for the condition, which is affecting more and more people as the country’s population lives longer. Different forms of dementia have distinct symptoms. One recognised sign is when retired people get up in the middle of the night thinking they must go to work. Difficulty understanding time and place is a tell-tale sign that the person may be developing dementia. Another sign is an unexplained loss of interest in things the person used to enjoy. Becoming forgetful, getting lost in places that should be familiar, and having trouble holding onto fresh information are also signs the brain is beginning to fade. Mood swings, anxiety and depression are also among the things to look out for. Dementia can take various forms, of which Alzheimer’s is only one. Different forms of dementia have distinct symptoms, which can help to identify them. For example, where there are mood changes but no memory loss it can be a sign of someone developing Lewy body dementia.
Are you at risk? There is no one cause for all types of dementia and scientific understanding is incomplete, but there are things we can all do to reduce our risk. The best way to prevent dementia, according to Race Against Dementia, is learning. Higher and longer lasting education is proven to improve cognitive performance. In midlife, symptoms including hearing loss, high blood pressure, obesity and a high alcohol intake are risks that can be tackled early. Limiting your alcohol intake to no more than 21 units a week; reducing smoking and physical inactivity, and taking steps to avoid social isolation can all act to reduce the risks. Despite these risk factors, the positive message to get across is that these are all factors that, for the most part, can be controlled to an extent and, even if you’re in midlife, you still have time to change and adapt. Exercise. Eat a balanced diet. Keep a healthy weight. Control your blood sugar levels. Lower your alcohol intake. Reduce cholesterol. Stop smoking… All of these things will work together to reduce your blood pressure to a healthy and sustainable level, and act against the risk factors that could lead to dementia. Clifden House Dementia Care Centre has been delivering exceptional residential and respite care for 50 years. It aims to maximise everyone’s potential through choice, reducing the use of unnecessary medication and alleviating the symptoms of dementia in a caring and supportive environment.

Fairy Shrimp: just add water
I’m still disappointed. As a kid, I read American Spiderman comics but I was always captivated by the inside back cover. There, an advert for ‘sea-monkeys’ showed a family of bizarre, grinning humanoid creatures which would become your pets and ‘bring smiles, laughter and fun into your home’ if you sent away a fistful of dollars to somewhere called ‘New Jersey’. Living in Olde England, the offer didn’t apply and my childhood therefore remained devoid of ‘smiles, laughter and fun.’ I realise now that an even greater disappointment awaited if I had actually ordered these creatures. In reality, sea-monkeys were simply brine shrimps: tiny crustaceans, not incredible aquatic simians. Just like sea-monkeys, Britain’s Fairy Shrimp are also crustaceans from the order Anostraca. They have transparent bodies, antennae, blobby black eyes on stalks

and twenty-two leaf-like legs which propel them, upside down, through water. They’re positively prehistoriclooking and haven’t bothered to evolve much since the Triassic period 200 million years ago. It’s amazing they have survived so long. Unlike other crustaceans, such as crabs and woodlice, Fairy Shrimp do not have hard exoskeletons. This armour-free existence leaves them vulnerable and they can only survive where nothing will eat them. But where on earth can you find such a habitat on our hostile planet? Safe, predator-free homes don’t just fall out of the sky. As rain falls, it transforms the ruts, ditches and depressions of our world into puddles and these puddles are a freshwater fresh start for life. The Fairy Shrimp are the first settlers in this safe new world. But how do they get there? The spooky truth is they have always been there. Like Spiderman, the Fairy Shrimp have their own superpowers. Their eggs can lie desiccated and dormant in the soil for years, even decades. They are resurrected by water; the Pot Noodles of the animal world. There are legends of 100-year-old Anostraca eggs taken from museum shelves, wetted and awakened. One tale even tells of eggs carbon-dated at 10,000 years old being resurrected. It’s a long, dry wait down there in the earth but, when rain arrives, the pool party starts. Newly-formed puddles teem with Fairy Shrimp but puddles are only temporary accommodation. To adapt, Fairy Shrimp have a fast life cycle; a race to produce more eggs before their home dries and disappears. Unsurprisingly, Fairy Shrimp are incredibly rare and hard to find, and you’re more likely to encounter some actual fairies. But if you’re out hiking on the South Downs looking to make a new start in 2022, keep checking those puddles. You may find some other animals trying to make a new start too. Seaford Head Probus Club Our Annual Skittles tournament, held at The Crouch Bowls Club’s splendid indoor facility, saw a party of 22 Members and wives foregather to enjoy a boxed lunch of Fish & Chips and drinks from the well-stocked bar, before getting down to the serious business of the day – Skittles. Hugely entertaining and great fun, the occasion gave us all a very welcome opportunity to relax, chat and compare notes on recent activities. Are you a retired man, or approaching retirement, and looking for a new stimulus? Come for a ‘taster’ at one of our monthly lunches and meet our diverse and interesting Members. It’s not a charity fundraiser, just a social club.

SEAFORD ROTARY
Santa Returns to Seaford Streets
Father Christmas and his elves returned to the streets of Seaford during seventeen evenings from 1st to 23rd December. On Saturday mornings in December and on Christmas Eve Father Christmas and his elves could be found in Broad Street. It was a joy to see the expressions of happiness and wonder on the children’s faces as they talked to and received their sweets from Santa. Seaford Rotary Club would like to thank all the residents of Seaford for your generosity. At the time of going to press the results of the collections are not yet known, but a full report will be provided in the February issue of Seaford Scene. We are very grateful and would like to give our heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers who accompanied Santa to help with the collections. Seaford Rotary would like to wish you all good health and a happy and prosperous new year.
John Preddy 50 Years Seaford Rotary Membership and Service
A convivial evening was facilitated by John Preddy’s generosity in having an open bar at the celebration of his 50 years’ membership and service to Seaford Rotary. Fifty-two Rotarians, their partners and friends were delighted to participate in the celebration at a dinner at Seaford Golf Club on 12th November, exactly 50 years to the day that John Preddy joined Seaford Rotary. Rotarian, Past President, Past District Governor and Paul Harris Fellow John Preddy was presented with a certificate issued by Rotary International Great Britain and Ireland in recognition of his 50 years’ membership and a letter from Rotary International. His wife Mary

was presented with a bouquet recognising her support to John and Seaford Rotary. Speeches were made by President of Seaford Rotary, Mike Ogilvie and by the Mayor of Seaford, Councillor Rodney Reed to which John responded. The Mayor, Councillor Rodney Reed on behalf of Seaford Town Council and the town of Seaford thanked John for his Civic Service since coming to Seaford in 1961. His speech recognised John’s contribution to our Town and his service from 1969 to 1981 as a District and County Councillor. The Mayor, as a Past Rotarian, also indicated that it was most unusual and certainly commendable for a Rotarian to complete 50 years of membership of one Rotary Club. He commended John for the example he set during this time of ‘Service above Self ’ while running a pharmaceutical business with an extensive reach.
Senior Citizen’s Christmas Party
Thiry-two senior citizens were treated to the Rotary Christmas party held at St Luke’s Church Hall, Walmer Road. There was a change of location and method for deciding who should be invited, with Mary Hawes from Seafriends arranging the invitations for the party goers, but the same happiness and enjoyment was had by all after a year away due to the Covid pandemic. The guests were treated to a glass of sherry on arrival and when all were seated, Past President Peter Fenwick dressed in full tails as master of ceremonies gave a rendition of ‘Willkommen’ from Cabaret before handing over to President Mike Ogilvie and the Mayor of Seaford, Rodney Reed to welcome the guests. Entertainment was provided by Graham Tubb and Margo Miller accompanied on the piano by Rosemary Kemp. Sandwiches and a selection of home-made cakes and scones, all washed down with tea, coffee or orange juice, were served by Rotarians, and Mary Hawes (dressed as an Elf) and Min Stone from Seafriends.

The afternoon festivities continued after the tea with Margot Miller, Graham Tubb and Rosemary Kemp entertaining everyone with a variety of songs drawn from old-time musicals, including a requested ‘Roll out the Barrel’. The songs were well known, and many of the guests joined in. Each senior citizen was provided with a strip of raffle tickets when they arrived. The Mayor of Seaford, Rodney Reed drew the raffle and President Mike Ogilvie distributed the prizes to the lucky winners. Prizes ranged from tins of sweets and biscuits to Christmas puddings and Christmas cakes. At the end, the happy party goers were conveyed back home.

Seaford schoolchildren’s designs come to life at showhome visit Pupils at a primary school in Seaford were able to see their drawings on the wall of a brand new showhome at a development in the town. Bellway invited children from Chyngton Primary School to enter their submissions in a design competition, with successful entries being displayed in the showhome at Seaford Grange, off Eastbourne Road. The school, which is located in Millberg Road, less than a mile from the development, tasked pupils with designing their ideal day at the beach. The housebuilder hosted a tour of the four-bedroom Scrivener showhome for the school in October so the youngsters could see their framed artwork on display.
Amy Clarke, Deputy Headteacher at Chyngton Primary School, said: ‘It was an absolute pleasure to visit Bellway’s Seaford Grange development to view the children’s artwork on display in the showhome. ‘It was lovely to see the many smiles that appeared on the children’s faces as they found their framed artwork and proudly showed their parents. The overall experience of working with Bellway has supported and promoted our work on community values. It has given the children an insight in to how they can represent our school and contribute to their local community, which is an important life lesson.’ Seaford Grange, which is just a mile and a half from Seaford Beach, has now opened, with the first properties available to purchase. Mark Harrop, Sales Director at Bellway Kent, said: ‘It has been great to work with Chyngton Primary School on this project, which has not only fostered a good relationship with the local community, but also encouraged and championed the creativity of youngsters. As we are delivering new homes at Seaford Grange which is very close to Chyngton – where children of new residents might attend – we thought that it was appropriate to engage with the school in an imaginative way.’ Bellway is delivering 183 new homes at Seaford Grange, with a mix of one-, two-, three- and fourbedroom properties being built. Photos from top: Chyngton Primary School pupils standing outside the Scrivener showhome at Bellway’s Seaford Grange; Lucas Rego from Chyngton Primary School with the designs on display in the showhome.

Seaford Community Cinema’s new season Seaford Community Cinema is presenting an eclectic programme of films and NT Live productions for the coming season, from January to April 2022 at the Barn Theatre. The New Year feast kicks off on Friday 14th January at 7.30pm with Nomadland (12A), the film which ran away with the Oscars including Best Film, Best Actress for Frances McDormand and Best Director for Chloé Zhao. When a company town in Nevada suffers economic collapse, a widow (McDormand) goes on the road as a modern-day nomad, on the way meeting actual nomads who play themselves. Next up is Gala Night on Saturday 22nd January, when Seaford’s The Youth Counselling Project is getting together with the cinema to raise much-needed funds for the schools-based charity, see page XX. The film is the critically acclaimed musical In the Heights (U), with music and lyrics co-written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. A film version of the Broadway musical, it centres on characters living in Washington Heights, where the good life is tantalisingly close yet far away in Manhattan. This is a real singalong movie and to get Gala-goers in the mood Clubby’s are cooking up meat and vegan burgers, included in the Gala ticket price of £15 adults and £12 18s and under. Fancy dress is positively encouraged! In Another Round (12A) a group of disillusioned school teachers turns to drink in an experiment designed to gee up the effectiveness of their classes by maintaining a steady alcohol level. In this Danish comedy, screened on Friday 28th January, it isn’t long before the project is being promoted to a real academic study. The Valentine’s Day romcom on Friday 11th February is Supernova (15) which sees partners played by Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci travelling in a camper van to the Lake District in a heart-tugging story about an author battling early-onset dementia and a musician preparing for his final concert. The National Theatre stage comes to the Barn on Thursday 17th February at 7pm with The Book of Dust - La Belle Sauvage (12A). This portrayal of the Philip Pullman prequel is set 12 years before his His Dark Materials trilogy.

The first Sunday matinée of the season takes place on 20th February with the screening of classic favourite High Society (U) at 2.30pm, starring Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra. Then it’s back to 7.30pm with Friday 25th February’s The Last Bus (12A) starring Timothy Spall and Phyllis Logan in a warm-hearted film which has the newly widowed Spall attempting to travel the length of the UK using just his bus pass and carrying the ashes of his dead wife (Logan). The manic black comedy Cruella (12) on Friday 4th March stars Emma Stone and Emma Thompson. Spike heels are out in this story about couture divas – and those Dalmatians are not quite so cute. The second matinée is fantasy adventure Jungle Cruise (12) on Sunday 13th March at 2.30pm, involving a female scientist whose knowledge is wilfully unrecognised as she ventures with her brother to Brazil to find a tree with magical powers. It’s back to the National Theatre again on Thursday 17th March at 7pm for a live screening of new musical Hex, about the bad fairy in Sleeping Beauty. At the age of 83 Anthony Hopkins became the oldest actor to win Best Actor Oscar for his part in The Father (12) showing on Friday 18th March at 7.30pm, giving a devastating account of what it is like to suffer from dementia. Olivia Coleman supports. And what better way to close the season than with Daniel Craig’s last outing as Bond in No Time To Die (12A), on Friday 1st April at 7.30pm? Ticket price rise: Prices are rising for the first time in 10 years by £1, to £7 non members, £6 members and £4 18s and under except for Gala Night, see above, and NT tickets which go up by £1 to £14.50, £13.50 and £8.50. Buy tickets from the Tourist Information Centre in Church Street, from www.seafordcinema.org and on the door. Booking is strongly advised as Covid guidelines mean seating is limited. Patrons are asked to wear masks.

AUDIOWAYS LAUNCHES QR CODE RECORDINGS A new QR audio trail across Lewes district has been launched with QR signs which tell eclectic, site-specific stories – from Lewes ghosts and wartime pig adoption to the fascinating stories of the chalk and flint which surround us. These free, easy-to-access audio recordings are set in Lewes town and at five railway stations along the Lewes to Eastbourne line. With the support of Southern Rail, SCRP, Lewes District Council, Lewes Town Council and the Enjoolata Foundation, co-producers Jeannine Inglis Hall and Galia Pike have worked with a wide range of collaborators from paleontologists, archaeologists and historians, to residents who have shared their local insights and personal stories to create a trail of short audio recordings.
Local Stories
Featuring diverse themes ranging from local prehistory to history, ecology, archaeology and more, the recordings will be accessed via colour-coded QR signs dotted around Lewes town and local stations. Participants will be able to listen to these recordings as a singular experience or curate their own route to listen to them all. The trail is a great way to explore the local area on foot or via rail – discovering new and interesting stories as you go.
Weird and Wonderful
Audioways have worked with a team of Lewes district locals: Susie Maidment, paleontologist at The Natural History Museum, Dr Michael Shapland, senior archeologist from UCL, and several Sussex historians including Kevin Gordon and Dr Jenny Flood. They have also gathered local voices and oral history recordings (with thanks to the British Library, Imperial War Museum and The Keep).
Community Benefits
‘Everyone benefits from the project – it’s free at point of access, instantly conveys local knowledge and clearly
communicates historical and present connections. The site-specific format immerses participants in their environment and aims to change our perception of the spaces we inhabit,’ says Co-Producer Jeannine Inglis Hall.
Project Support
Lewes District Council’s Tourism, Arts and Heritage Manager, Helen Browning Smith enthuses “Audioways is a great way to engage with all visitors. This is an inventive and fun method of telling the rich story of Lewes and the surrounding area, and it celebrates the unique creative spirit of our brilliant community. I’m looking forward to seeing how the project grows.’ Southern’s support has been key to the success of the project. Chris Fowler, Customer Services Director at Southern explains ‘The trail is great as it’s free to participate and is helping to promote sustainable tourism. By taking the train to get to QR locations between Lewes and Seaford, by using one of our electric trains you’ll be using one of the greenest and quickest ways to travel. We’re looking forward to welcoming passengers exploring the local area on-board and help people discover new and familiar parts of the UK.’ The initial phases of the trail can be accessed around Lewes town centre, and the following stations: Lewes, Southease, Newhaven Town, Bishopstone and Seaford. Audioways is currently working on the next phases of their project with help from Lewes District Council and the Enjoolata Foundation – producing codes in partnership with Sussex Past to tell more stories from around the district. The Audioways map will be built on over time with many more audio codes planned. For more information on Audioways, photographs and graphics, contact: galia_pike@icloud.com or visit www.audioways.co.uk Photo: Jeannine Inglis Hall, Galia Pike and Chris Fowler

Are you struggling to lock your UPVC door? Try this simple 3 point test to see if your door needs adjusting before it breaks... With one hand... 1. Push the door closed 2. Lift the handle and let go 3. Turn the key
Business as usual, but from a safe distance
If you can’t do the above easily and have to hold the handle or force the handle to turn the key, then you need to get your door adjusted before it breaks. The weight of the door on a badly adjusted locking mechanism will eventually break, usually in the locked position!

Personal Electric Transport – Going Green on the Roads Our efforts to be green have been centring around transport recently. The UK is set to ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2040. But what about going even greener still with small, personal electric vehicles. Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEV) have been around since the Eighties. The concept was pioneered by Sir Clive Sinclair with his C5. At that time, the vision of personal electric transport was ahead of its time as the technology for batteries and motors could not deliver a truly usable vehicle. But in 2021 electric-powered bikes and scooters have now made their way onto our streets and roads. So, what are your choices and what are you legally allowed to do with these new PLEVs? E-bikes are the easiest to understand. These are basically bicycles, (so they are not classed as an electric vehicle), with an electric motor and battery bolted on to the frame to provide power assistance to your normal pedalling. Providing your electrically powered bicycle has working pedals, a less than 250 W motor, and a top speed of under 15 mph it still classed as a bicycle. You can ride it on roads, cycle paths and anywhere else a pushbike is legal. You can of course buy more powerful e-bikes, but as soon as you go above these specifications they are classed as a motorbike and you’ll need a licence, road tax, insurance, and everything else that goes with it. An alternative is to go for an electric scooter. You’ve probably seen these popping up around the country in various rental hire schemes. These are basically stand-up scooters with a battery and motor built into

the footplate. With a throttle and brake built onto the handlebars you simply step on and off you go. But one of the big differences to e-bikes is that electric scooters are actually illegal to ride on UK roads. This may come as a surprise as you’ve no doubt seen numerous people zipping around towns on rental machines. Scooter law is evolving fast and rental scooters have been given special permission to run on roads while the government analyses their effect on town congestion and traffic usage. But this special permission is not (yet) extended to privately owned personal electric scooters. These are still classed as electric vehicles which would again mean having tax, insurance, etc. to be legal on the roads. Even then, because they fall into the Personal Light Electric Vehicle category, their low-power and maximum speed mean they can’t be used on public roads. This leaves scooters stuck in an inconvenient situation, even if you made them road legal…they wouldn’t be road legal! There is a lot of pressure to change this, but for now if you have a personal electric scooter you are only legally allowed to use it on private land where you have the landowner’s permission. Riding a scooter on the road or pavement is breaking the law and you could be prosecuted. So, before you invest in one of these innovative personal transport solutions do make sure that you are legally allowed to use it to get to where you want to go. Seaford Stamp & Post Card Club Collecting Recent GB Stamps
How times have changed! Just 20 years ago – a short time ago in the eyes of stamp collectors – nearly all post was sent using pre-paid labels, ‘stamps’ to you and me. Nowadays we still occasionally buy these stamps in booklets to send letters but when you take heavier or larger mail into a Post Office they are more likely to stick an uninspiring white label on the item. Most of the smaller Post Offices do not even stock the recent commemorative stamps which can only be obtained in main Post Offices or directly from the Philatelic Bureau. It was refreshing to see displays of recent stamps which were given by two members of the Hastings Stamp Club. Chris Dadswell showed his collection of GB Folded booklets of four 1st class stamps which contain a Commemorative Label; the one shown is the third in this series with the label celebrating the Queen’s 70th birthday. Sometimes, if you are lucky, you can find the
the stamp commemorating the band ‘Thin Lizzy’ and his area is that the family of their original lead singer, Phil Lynott, have links to a pub in the area. With each FDC comes a sheet containing details of the stamp and its link to the area. Since he usually produces just six of each cover and keeps two for himself, we are unlikely to ever see them again We have a full agenda for next year, starting with ‘New Zealand’ on 12th January and ‘A London PotPourri’ on 9th February. The club meets on the second Wednesday of the the month at 7pm for 7.30pm at the Seaford Constitutional Club. You are welcome to come along, or if you would like to find out more about the club visit our website at Seaford Stamp and Post Card Club: http://www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/ sspc/ or from our club secretary David at david. manthorpe10@gmail.com tel 01323492433.

printer’s cylinder numbers in the margin alongside the stamps: these numbers are only printed once on the sheet and modern stamps are usually printed in ‘one run’ so, when present, these booklets have the same numbers. Some older booklets had such long print runs that the cylinders wore out or broke-making some of the cylinder numbers quite rare. Around the start of this century these booklets were replaced by ones containing six stamps with four definitive stamps alongside two commemorative ones. The second display given by Kevin Dillistone was of Irish First Day Covers (FDCs) with a difference. These recent covers were created by Paddy Lineen, a retired Doctor of Engineering living on Achill Island, Co. Mayo. He finds links between modern Irish commemorative stamps and the local area; the connection between

Inner Wheel Club of Seaford District Meeting
Attendees at the District 25 meeting of Inner Wheel enjoyed a superb lunch prepared by Seaford Inner Wheel at Ashington Village Hall. District Chairman Jennifer Pierce for the Inner Wheel Year 202122, a Past President of Seaford Inner Wheel, introduced her chosen charity for the year, ‘Medical Detection Dogs’. A very interesting presentation was made by Millie Harries and Biddy Wood who are Volunteer Speakers from Medical Detection Dogs. Medical Detection Dogs trains dogs to detect the odour of human disease with the aim of developing faster, more efficient and less invasive diagnostics that lead to better patient
outcomes. Bio Detection Dogs are trained to find the odour of those diseases in samples such as urine, breath and sweat. Medical Alert Assistance Dogs are trained to detect minute changes in an individual’s personal odour, triggered by their disease and alert them to an impending medical event, helping them manage complex, life-threatening medical conditions and improving their quality of life.

THE PROBUS CLUB OF SEAFORD
derelict, waterlogged or barren land. Britain was even more dependent upon food imports than during the First World War, and the growth of numbers of German submarines was having a devasting effect through the sinking of food-carrying convoys.
At a recent meeting our members were given a presentation by local historian Ian Everest on the subject of the Women’s Land Army, in both a national and local context.
Initially women were encouraged to join the Land Army, but later it became compulsory for unmarried women over 18, who did not have any family caring responsibilities to join some form of work of national importance, either through the Army, Air Force or Navy, or through such organisations as the Women’s Land Army, or its lesser-known sister organisation the Women’s Timber Corps. Whilst many ‘Land Girls’ came from rural or farming areas, many others came from an inner-city background, with little knowledge of the countryside. The Land Girls were employed directly by the farms where they worked, but, controversially, they were paid ten shillings a week less than the agreed rate for men! The majority lived with the farmer where they worked, but many others were accommodated in hostels, often large houses commandeered for the war effort. There was a hostel based at Stud Farm near Newhaven. The majority were well treated by their employer, although there were cases of being taken for granted, being poorly fed and of being housed in unsuitable conditions. On the positive side, the effects of food rationing were not so evident living on a farm.
The concept of a Women’s Land Army began towards the end of the First World War, in 1917, when there had arisen a shortage of farm labour, due to the men leaving to fight in the war. It was felt that the majority of farm work could be done by women, and this would help to feed the nation during difficult times. The organisation was revived in 1939 as a way of maintaining existing agriculture, of opening up new arable crop possibilities, such as ploughing up playing fields and golf courses, and by reclaiming previous
By 1941 there were 41,000 Land Girls, rising to 88,000 in 1944. Ian produced a large number of photographs of Land Girls at work, many taken locally, and a number featuring members of his own family. There seemed to be no job beyond the capability of the Land Girls: hedging, ditching and general maintenance work; all aspects of dairying; driving tractors; fruit and vegetable picking; ploughing, sewing and harvesting. Ian said that, even today, people tend to underestimate the vital role played by members of the Women’s Land Army in reducing the effects of the loss of food during the sinking of the convoy ships, and by lessening the impact of food rationing. Sadly, this good work was not recognised at the time: Land Girls were not awarded any medals for their service. This lack of recognition was put right in 2008 when surviving Land Girls were awarded a Commemorative badge (but not a Medal!) for their contribution to the War effort. On the Verge and Trees for Seaford – Renaturing Seaford Rewilding?
New year – new plan. We’ve been talking about increasing biodiversity in Seaford for a year now, and we often use the word ‘rewilding’. To me, ‘wilding’ is the fantastic work being done at the Knepp Estate, where the only land management is controlling the number of horses, pigs and cows that wander round the site at will, cutting the grass, pruning the bushes and rooting the earth around in search of food! You may be relieved to know we have no plans to bring cattle to the Martello Fields, or pigs to root through your grass verges. We do want to work with our partners to thoughtfully and sensibly manage our green spaces to bring more nature back to Seaford. From now on, we will be using the words ‘renaturing’ and hope this gives a better idea of what we are doing. We particularly want to attract insects, especially pollinators including bees, hoverflies and butterflies. This should also increase the number of birds in our town, and make it more attractive to people too! Just leaving small areas to go completely wild would not necessarily maximise the biodiversity anyway. This was proved in the interesting BBC programme ‘The British Garden, Life and Death on your Lawn’ by Chris Packham. Leaving areas untended can also result in only tenacious ‘weeds’ and brambles, that would discourage people from enjoying our green spaces.
New Trees
During this Winter ‘Trees for Seaford’ volunteers have been helping to plant trees all around town. Regular volunteer Frances told us, ‘For me it is a dream come true to see my road lined with trees. It was actually rather a nice way to meet my neighbours and good to feel so supported by the tree planting group.’ Another resident was so thrilled that she made a donation and
68
offered to water four trees when required. New trees really are a fantastic symbol of hope for the future, in a year of so much personal sadness and loss, and growing awareness of the climate emergency.
SEA launch and ‘On the Verge’ video
Recently SEA opened a fantastic Climate Hub in Seaford, which gives a base for groups in Seaford including ours. We were delighted when a film student asked to make a short film during the Hub opening day about On the Verge. Do watch it if you can. Many thanks to Maya Dodwell, and Screen and Film School Brighton for this lovely film. Big thanks too for the people in our growing community for taking part. Their words really say it all. ‘I’ve been involved in meadow making at the local primary school, Annecy School. We scraped off a whole bank with rakes and planted yellow rattle and native meadow plants. We also helped the younger children to plant some apple trees, so they now have an orchard, which will hopefully inspire some of them to grow their own food.’ Lara from Seaford Environmental Alliance. ‘We plant trees and wildflowers so that we can improve the environment and see if we can make a change... and save the world from climate change.’ ‘If we don’t plant trees...then there won’t be enough trees in the world to sustain all life on earth.’ ‘If you chop down trees it’s like chopping down a living thing because

trees breathe.’ Students from Annecy primary school. ‘We’re a smallish town. If we can’t make a change where we live, how can we affect a change in our world? When people are more in touch with nature, then they start to care about it. If you don’t experience nature, then it’s something you’re detached from.’ Karen from Friends of Sutton Downs group who are planning an orchard and community planting schemes at the Downs Leisure Centre. ‘On the Verge really started in Lockdown when people really started appreciate their local green spaces. We wanted to do more to try and connect these green spaces and connect people with their green spaces, and make more space for wildlife in the town. If we learn to understand something and to value it, then we want to save it.’ Margery from Trees for Seaford and On the Verge. ‘We’re also hoping to raise awareness among people, so that people are taking action, and we learn together about how we can mitigate the effects of climate change’. Dinah from On the Verge and Seaford Environmental Alliance. Wishing you all a wonderful 2022, full of nature, hope and happiness. https://www.seafuture.org/on-the-verge/ https://treesforseaford.wordpress.com/ https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=6Fo50bBWcB8&t=1s (or search for Maya Dodwell on youtube)

Seaford u3a News The start of a new year brings optimism that we will all have a better year. Life has been very difficult for so many people over the last two years because of the pandemic, though Seaford has probably been luckier than many other places. Let us hope we can get back to a normal routine soon. The routine but very enjoyable coffee morning will be on Wednesday 19th January from 10am to 12 noon at the Con Club, Crouch Lane, Seaford. As usual both members and non-members are invited and there will be a small charge of £2 for coffee/tea and light refreshments. There is no need to book in order to attend – everyone is welcome to come along and meet the members. In 2022 u3a members can look forward to new groups starting, a programme of talks at the Downs Leisure Centre, more outings and hopefully the return of Tea Parties. Other members might like to look back at groups which ran successfully and were much enjoyed by those who took part. One such group, a rather unusual one, was Tea Tasting. Members enjoyed three sessions of tea tasting at the beautifully refurbished Clinton Centre, including black caravan tea, green tea, mango and camomile. All were voted on and a mixed reaction recorded. They had volunteer speakers on The History of Tea in Russia, World War II tea with some curios from the fort at Newhaven, and a Japanese tea ceremony. The culmination of the sessions was a trip to the fifteenthcentury coaching inn at Alfriston, the Star Inn, that has been turned into a stunningly designed hotel where the group was served with tea and amaretto cake, with a log fire burning to keep out the chill. Another new group with a difference is the World Diners’ Group. The first visit was to a Vietnamese Restaurant in Seaford, the second to a Bengali restaurant and they hope to visit a Japanese restaurant next.
November also saw the resumption of the outings popular with members and the first was to Westminster Abbey. This had been planned before the first lockdown which put a stop to the travelling and indeed everything else. The party had a guided tour of this magnificent building, the venue for all English kings’ coronations apart from two – Edward V and Edward VIII – neither of whom were crowned. There was a religious building on the site from about 960 and in 1065 the church planned by Edward the Confessor, which forms the heart of the present Abbey, was consecrated just a week before his death. Members learnt that there are thirty sovereigns buried or commemorated in the Abbey as well as 3,000 ‘ordinary’ citizens, statesmen, scientists, writers, musicians, warriors and poets. The Tomb of the Unknown Warrior which represents all those fallen in war is also in the Abbey. It was a long day for those members who went on the outing but a satisfactory one both in its content and also what it signified as a step back to normal. For more information about Seaford u3a see the website www.u3asites.org.uk/seaford. To find out about membership email seafordu3a@gmail.com sending your postal address for a welcome pack. Citizens Advice Energy saving tips to help save money this winter? Normally we would suggest switching however, we wouldn’t recommend that now so here are other small ways to keep your bills down: l Turning off televisions and other electronic devices and not leaving them on standby. l Washing clothes on a lower temperature at off-peak times. l Only fill the kettle with the water you need. l Turning down your main thermostat by 1 degree saves around £60 on energy bills. l Spend one minute less in the shower each day; a family household could save £75 a year on energy and water bills. The Simple Energy Advice website has more tips. l Improve insulation. If you’re renting, ask your landlord to do this. Or you may get financial support to help insulate your home under the Energy Company Obligation scheme. Contact your energy supplier for information. l If your house is not connected to the gas grid you may be able to receive help under the Home Upgrade Grant scheme through your local authority. l If you’re a pensioner with a low income, receive Universal Credit or other meanstested benefits, you may be eligible for the Warm Home Discount of £140 a year to go towards your bills. The Government recently announced a £500m fund to support households this winter, so watch for announcements about how this could help you. It will be distributed by Local Authorities. Call us on 0808 278 7892 for advice about energy costs and staying warm this winter.

any electricity on site we had imagined having to sand it all by hand. Once that is done, we will be able to able to paint it with the varnish given to us by Brewers. There was no stopping the industrious elves at Santa’s workshop at the Crouch last month. No sooner had Brian constructed Christmas trees, and large and small snowmen from pallets, logs and whatever bits and pieces came to hand, than Maggie was filling in time between customers at the sales table to deck the snowmen with festive red tinsel, paint their noses and buttons red and treat them to a merry grin. And they went down a treat when the garden was open on Christmas Magic day. Visitors continuing a walk around the garden after buying a plant for some lucky person’s Christmas present – perhaps one of our generously donated primulas and pansies – would have seen James pruning new growth from an apple tree. ‘I take it down to a couple of buds,’ he said. ‘It encourages the tree to fruit and stops it from getting too big.’ The tree in question was planted from dwarf root stock. ‘If it had been planted on its own root stock it would have grown too tall and wide for the space we have.’ Next time you are in the garden spare a glance into the compost bins for these are now being enriched by the power of coffee grounds from Baca in Dane Road. Veronica commented: ‘It makes very good compost’, so our thanks go to Nimeir and his many coffee-drinking customers. Thanks also to David Coppard of Coppard Plant Hire who has offered to lend us, free of charge, a floor sander and generator for our work on the floor, whenever we are ready to use it. Thanks David, without

And keep tuned in to Seahaven FM because volunteer Lesley will be on air, talking about our garden where brooms and secateurs have been much in evidence as volunteers, including newbies Debbie and Amy, carried on with the seasonal tidy up. Now everyone has an opinion about what should be cut and when. Should plants be razed to the ground after flowering, or should they be left until new growth appears in spring? Katie offered her own credo: ‘I leave stems in situ until they go beyond 45 degrees from vertical. If it’s still in flower I leave it and I like to leave seed heads on as long as possible for the birds. Insects also like to get in among the dead stuff, so it’s important for the whole ecosystem not to be too tidy. In reality I suppose I do half and half, otherwise there’s too much work to do in the spring and the garden can look a bit of a soggy mess.’ On a blustery, chilly day in early December there was still plenty in flower, from maroon sedums to delicate pink roses. And by the time you read this the hellebores should be making their welcome appearance in shades from cream to green to purple. Blooming marvellous! Have a wonderful gardening New Year, the Garden Team Photos from top: Brian drills screws into the ‘branches’ of a Christmas tree; Maggie with a decorated snowman; Snowmen and trees on sale; Sedums offer glorious late colour and birds love their seeds; Hip hip hooray for roses; James prunes an apple.

Dear All, it was lovely to see so many of our members at the AGM on 30th November. I was able to tell them about next year’s planned speakers and outings, and of course our show on 6th August 2022. However, very importantly, the members agreed that from now on the annual programmes will be sent out by post.
As you relax with a cup of tea and peruse your New Year seed catalogue, you might consider growing some potatoes. My husband says, ‘Why bother, unless it’s King Edwards?!’ but growing your own allows you to try varieties that will never appear in your local supermarket. The potato arrived in Europe from South America sometime before the end of the 16th century. It was at first spread for non-food purposes, used for illness, even grown for its flowers. Many considered it to be poisonous, and there’s some truth in that. Potatoes are in the Solanaceae or nightshade family of plants, and green patches can indicate the presence of toxins. Today it is the fourth largest food crop on Earth. With the huge range of varieties now available for home-growers to try, displays of potatoes are popular exhibits at horticultural shows. How about trying Edzell Blue, a second-early Victorian variety with purplish skin and floury white flesh that’s ideal for mash. This one is recommended by both Anna Pavord, gardening correspondent for the Independent, and Alan Titchmarsh. Kestrel is another second-early, and a winning show potato, as well as being a good all-purpose cooking variety with a fair resistance to slugs and disease. There’s plenty to choose from, but don’t delay or you may be disappointed. See you at the show.

Looking forward to a better New Year Seaford Museum would like to wish everyone a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Writing this piece at the end of November, quite how we will be celebrating this year seems a little uncertain. And looking forward into the year ahead things may be even more uncertain, but we have decided to forge ahead with our programme of events, and if it becomes necessary to modify, postpone or cancel some events, we are sure you will understand. And so on Friday 14th January at 7.30pm, we are hosting a talk at the Little Theatre entitled ‘The Crown Jewels’ given by Pat Kingshott. For many years, Pat and her husband Alan lived at the Tower of London where Alan rose to become the Head Warden and Pat was the Keeper of the Crown Jewels. Pat will have
fascinating insights into the collection in the Jewel Tower of London which has been housed there since 1661. Next year, all our talks will be held at the Little Theatre in Steyne Road. Entrance will be on a first-come-firstserved basis. Entrance for the January talk will cost £5 for the public and £2 for Museum Members – another good reason to become a Museum Member! Our programme of talks for 2022 ranges far and wide with the February talk (on the 11th) being entitled ‘Lionel the Little Known Warrior – The Red Baron’s first Englishman’ given by Jill Bush. This talk will tell the story of Lt Lionel Morris, Baron Von Richtofen’s first combat victim in September 1916. Join us for many enjoyable and informative talks in 2022, all on Friday afternoons, in the Little Theatre in Steyne Road.
We supply a large bulk bag to your door for a one-off payment of £4.99. l When you have filled it with your garden green waste, phone us and we will collect and recycle it for just £17.50. l No more struggling to take your green waste to the tip and then cleaning your car afterwards. l Let us do the hard work. l Practical and easy with weekly collections. l Registered Environment Agency waste carrier. l

We will be welcoming Gaenor Circus to our club to demonstrate ‘Whirling Mad’. Gaenor is an experienced and proficient demonstrator and we are looking forward to seeing her arrangements. Our Club competition is entitled ‘Look! No Oasis’ and this will be an opportunity to put to the test the lessons we learned at our meeting in October last year, where we were shown that it is not always essential to use floral foam when creating arrangements. Looking back to our November meeting, Michelle King demonstrated ‘Christmas Carousel’, taking ideas from countries round the world to inspire her creations. The afternoon was a real treat. Our competition entitled ‘Autumn Hues’ was well supported, with some beautiful colours, as you can see from the photos. We meet at the Baptist Church Hall in Belgrave Road, Seaford, BN25 2EE on the third Thursday of each month (except January) at 1.30pm. Our fees for the year are £30 and visitors are always very welcome at £5 on the door which includes refreshments. Contact Mary Morris on 01323 893899 or Sue Ward on 01323 894848 for further details. We can dispose of most items including green waste, hardcore, soil, white goods and furniture, and can often estimate the price of the disposal based on Household, Garden & Commercial Clearance & Waste Removala photograph of your waste. Seaford Sessions
Seaford Sessions, the community organisation bringing live acoustic folk, roots and Americana to Seaford with its sell-out band performances at the Seaford Little Theatre, is coming back with more gigs early in the New Year. After two years of Covid putting a stop to such events at this intimate theatre, plans are now afoot to restart with lots of exciting bands coming up. The first of the 2022 Seaford Sessions is set to take place on Saturday 26th February with the five-piece Rosie Brown Band, featuring Rosie on vocals and guitar, and bringing her brand of folky blues and jazz to the stage. Look forward to gorgeous new songs from their imminent fourth album as well as from their first three as they bring their heady, country-tinged, jazz-infused sound to the Little Theatre.
Bernd Rest (guitars and harmony vocals), with Simon C Russell (bass, viola and harmony vocals), drums from the inimitable Paul May, and trumpet and flugelhorn from the sweet-lipped Robin Hopcraft.
The Rosie Brown Band play a heady mix of jazz, folk and country influences enhanced by harmonydrenched tones from Rosie’s co-writer and producer
Mojo described their sound as, ‘As fresh and enveloping as morning mist and as disquietingly opaque. The music of Rosie Brown weaves a wondrous spell.’

Thank you, thank you on behalf of all the youngsters who benefitted from some very welcome Christmas presents from local and corporate organisations. The Youth Counselling Project is so grateful! In no particular order, the Seaford-based organisation received £4,000 from The Albert Hunt Trust and a Henry Smith award of £2,000 plus the Seahaven branch of The Royal Society of St George has pledged resource boxes to suit the different age-related needs of pupils attending the town’s four primary schools and Seaford Head School. Grants awarded to TYCP from national charitable bodies pay a good proportion of our annual costs to help up to 85 children this year with mental health problems. The Albert Hunt Trust aims to promote and enhance the physical and mental welfare of individuals or groups of individuals through grant making and the Henry Smith Charity aims to use its resources to help people and communities at a time of need and to bring about positive change. At the time of of writing TYCP would also like to acknowledge the promises of help from singers and musicians who were organising or taking part

in concerts in the run up to Christmas. For example, we were delighted that a concert at St Andrew’s Church, Bishopstone, with music from celebrated opera singer Dame Felicity Lott, violinist Maeve Jenkinson, pictured, and pianist Martin Neill had a retiring collection for TYCP. Also, Jane Reeves of Archway Choir did the same after the choir’s concert at St Leonards Church, and she also made room for us to rattle buckets when the choir sang at Trafalgar Square, London. With the big increase in children needing therapy from specially trained counsellors since the outbreak of Covid, it is generosity like this that makes it possible to improve the lives of these youngsters, most of whom receive 10 individual therapy sessions at a cost of around £500 per student block.
