NUCLEAR DISASTER SURVIVORS HOSTED A LOOK BACK IN HISTORY SHOWS HOW SAMFORD STEPPED UP TO ASSIST At a recent meeting with David Reed at the Samford Scouts grounds in Cash Avneue, this fascinating piece of local history was highlighted. We asked David to find out more, so we could share it with you. In April 1986, a nuclear reactor at the Chernobyl power station in Ukraine exploded sending radioactive materials into the environment across many parts of Europe. A vast number of local people were affected by the fallout, especially children, who developed radiation sickness, malnutrition and the inability to experience a balanced diet. Many of their staple foods (milk, fruit, vegetables) were irradiated adding to their overall health conditions. UNESCO, together with the Soviet Children’s Fund and the World Scout Bureau, established a program to bring children to various countries to remove them from their local environment and improve their physical and mental health. In 1992, the Scout Queensland Branch hosted 67 of these children with

Scouting families in South-East Queensland. Their stay also included an activity camp for the children at Scout Queensland’s BadenPowell Park in Samford. A wide range of activities were arranged for the children, including canoeing, abseiling, art and craft, orienteering, tree planting and a cooee

competition. For many it was the first time that they had camped out under canvas. The experience provided by the Scouts created a stable opportunity for the children to be clothed, have regular rest, experience Australian food and integrate into Australian family life. Some Scout families even ‘twinned’ together to ensure that the children still had regular contact with each other after their stay and as their homeland lives continued. 41 years later, the area where the children camped is now known as Chernobyl Glade and a special gateway, pictured here, marks the site entry. The Gateway stands to commemorate this event and the many Scout Leaders, families and people of Samford who supported the children of Chernobyl. David Reed

Samford RSL Sub-Branch REMEMBRANCE DAY 2023 Remembrance Day (or Poppy Day or Armistice Day) is a day Commonwealth countries remember those who have died in the line of duty. This important Memorial Day has been observed since the end of World War 1. At 11am on 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of relentless warfare. This meant that allied forces had been successful in driving German invaders to defeat. The Germans called for an armistice (ceasefire) to negotiate a peace settlement and accepted the allied terms of unconditional surrender. About 70 million people had been mobilised in this first world conflict leaving

Cub Scout Receives Highest Award Samford Cub Scout Chalie Frazer has been awarded the coveted Grey Wolf Award, the highest award a Cub Scout can receive. To achieve his award, Charlie had to complete a number of badge achievements covering areas such as first aid, cooking, aviation, canoeing, community awareness and involvement, bushcraft and camping. Samford Scout Cub Scout Leader Mark Crane said, “Charlie has excelled within the Cub Scout program and shown to be everything that we admire in a Cub Scout.” Charlie received his Grey Wolf Award at a recent ceremony at Samford Scout Den, during which he reaffirmed his Cub Scout Promise.

the devastating impact of between 9 and 13 million deaths, with about one third of the victims with no known grave. On the first anniversary of armistice in 1919, two-minutes’ silence was instituted in the commemorative ceremony at the cenotaph in London. The second anniversary held great significance when it also became a funeral with the return of the remains of an unknown soldier from the battlefields of “This is an important aspect of Cub Scouts as we aren’t just keeping Cubs actively entertained, we are helping them to develop life skills that will enable them to find true success in life, living happy and productive lives,” Group Leader David Reed said. The Cub Scouts received a letter from the Branch Commissioner for Cub Scouts in Queensland and a certificate to go with their badges. Plus, there was a piece of celebration cake for all of course. Mr Reed said while the group has continually been welcoming new Scouts, they are also looking for new volunteer leaders to help keep up with the growing demand for Scouting in Samford. “We are especially keen to hear from adults who would like to be leaders and role models for wonderful Scouts like Charlie. There is no greater way to help your community than helping train tomorrow’s

the Western Front. Then in 1997, GovernorGeneral Sir William Deane formally declared 11 November as Remembrance Day, urging all Australians to observe one-minutes’ silence. After the Second World War the Australian and British governments called the commemoration ‘Remembrance Day’ rather than Armistice Day to remember all war dead. The Poppy is a familiar emblem of Remembrance Day because of the poem “In Flanders Field”. Ironically and symbolically, Poppies bloomed a brilliant blood red across some of the worst Battlefields of Flanders. COMMEMORATE WITH US We welcome everyone to join RSL Members in a service to remember the fallen-on Saturday, 11 November 2023 at the Samford Avenue of Honour on the Cnr of Burton Lane and Mt Samson Road, Samford. Samford Archers in the National Championships 280 archers competed in the Archery Australia’s National Target Championships at Samford recently, which included 17 members of the Samford Valley Target Archers. It would be nice to say that at least one of these archers equalled the feat of Jonathon Milne, from a Sydney club, in shooting a World Record, but that is not the case this time. World records aside, there was an amazing performance by Club member Delia Evans, who won a National Gold medal as part of the Women’s Recurve Team and a Bronze Medal in the Women’s Individual Recurve division, in Matchplay. Delia has worked very hard to get to the levels she is achieving. Scott Brice just missed out on a National medal in the Individual Male Compound division in Matchplay, making 4th place. In the ranking round for Matchplay selection, Elizabeth Rankin was second in her division - Open Female Compound

shooting. In the 90-arrow round, Bronwyn Healing, Sofie Sandberg and Scott Brice achieved first places, while Emma Crouch, Michael Schilling, Bart Brameijer and Colin Tyack placed second in their various divisions. The 144-arrow round was cut short by a storm, as all the archers will remember, but the organisers came up with a solution to that and Bronwyn Healing, Sofie Sandberg, Scott Brice and Michael Schilling all ranked first in their divisions. Comments from the participants in the

tournament have been very positive and the members of the Samford club have been praised for their dedication to the sport of archery. The archery range at Samford is also well regarded amongst the nation’s archers, but improvements are still planned to make it one of, if not THE, best in Australia. The volunteers who worked to help make the tournament such a success, are resting on their laurels. Congratulations archers and thank you volunteers. Evan Fisher

LOCAL NEWS Samford State School Explodes with Colour Samford State School students expressed their true colours earlier this month, taking part in the school’s largest annual fundraiser. The Colour Explosion Fun Run transformed the school oval into something that could otherwise have been a pigment of the kids’ imagination. Students charged through a wet and wild obstacle course that boasted a foam pit, inflatables, squirts of water and plenty of colour. White T-shirts turned rainbow as each year level rushed at their chance to be involved in this unique experience. The foam pit proved to be a particular hit with extra bubbly and beaming kids emerging through the sudsy wall. Parents and staff were then on hand to cover students in non-toxic, biodegradable colour powder from head to toe. Kids wore special rainbow sunglasses and a rainbow headband as their primary-coloured line of defence. A few brave teachers put their hand up to be slimed by students who raised more than $20, with the green goo shared all around as teachers made sure to give their kids a big hug afterwards. The Colour Explosion Fun Run not only brought out the vibrancy of the school community, it also put the fun back into fundraising. Tanya Hall

AUTHOR VISIT At Samford Kindy, we strive to provide engaging experiences that support the children in making sense of the world around them. We encourage them to ask questions, make connections, find answers and develop understandings in multiple ways, to foster a positive disposition towards learning. We were recently visited by Fire Ecologist and Author, Sam Lloyd to learn about fire, a natural part of the Australian bush. Sam’s book Alight: A Story of Fire and Nature tells the story of some Fire Officers who light a planned fire in the bushland, in turn helping to bring new life and growth to the bush. The book begins with a gentle fire, warning the animals to find a safe place to hide. The Antechinus burrows deep within a cosy tree hollow, Wallum Sedge Frogs and Dragonflies hide among the sedges and ants, beetles and other creatures find protection beneath the ground. As a result of this fire, the bush flourishes. Wallum Banksia opens its seed capsule to release seeds to grow, Christmas Bell blooms to provide nectar for insects and birds, bandicoots forage on fungi growing from burnt stumps and there is new growth for wallabies and kangaroos too. After reading and discussing this story the children were invited to explore the new ideas presented by creating a natureinspired visual art piece. A variety of foraged leaves and flowers were provided for the children to create a bush environment and red, orange and yellow tissue paper was available to represent fire. With many controlled burns organised in our local area and a warmer than average Summer predicted, this visit has provided the children with some understanding of why fires are organised and the benefits of appropriate fire to the wellbeing of Australian bushland and its many inhabitants. Thank you for sharing your book with us Sam and to Endi and family for your help in organising this experience. EXERCISE FOR ALL Many aspects of life are inherently designed for non-disabled people, which can unwittingly exclude those living with a disability. Community Bank Samford was thrilled to provide a grant allowing Trusted Care to create tailored exercise programs for individuals with a disability in the Samford and Pine Rivers region. Eight clients participated in an eight-week exercise program alongside their support workers. Those who took part in the program gained the skills needed to transition into supported mainstream classes. Angela Sager, Administrative Services Manager at Trusted Care, said clients were extremely excited to experience a program tailored for their specific needs and abilities. “When speaking to our participants, they mentioned that a gym can be a really intimidating place, whether it be from an anxiety point of view or due to their limited physical abilities,” she said. “They said that having the comfort of personalised training in small groups made such a difference to their confidence and that it also helped them believe they could continue by themselves after the program ended. One client mentioned that the program had opened a door that they didn’t think would ever be open to them.” Trusted Care was extremely grateful to Community Bank Samford for the grant, which enabled the organisation to bring its idea to fruition. “Without this funding we would never have been able to launch this program. Having the funding meant that we could access the gym trainers for personalised programs to suit each of our participants and their varying abilities, and also provide a little community at the gym where the participants were able to gain confidence and skills that they did not have prior to the program launch,” Angela said.

Ben Smith, Head of Business Development at Trusted Care agrees that Community Bank Samford’s funding allowed their team to nurture the physical and emotional wellbeing of participants from all walks of life. “We are deeply grateful to Community Bank Samford, a valued partner and grantor, for their unwavering support in making our inclusive fitness program a reality. Through this program, we have empowered our community members, providing them with the necessary tools and guidance to confidently transition to supported mainstream fitness classes,” he said. “Together, we have not only enhanced the lives of our participants, but also fostered a more inclusive and compassionate community.” Tanya Hall

LOCAL CAFE URGENTLY NEEDS A CHEF

Café Lagarto in the Lifestyle Centre on Mt Glorious Road is looking for a chef for an immediate start. This is a lovely café with great staff in a very relaxed setting. The repercussions of covid on the hospitality industry are making it very difficult for the café to find a chef, which could mean reduced hours or even closing for at least one day a week. This would be such a shame, but the pressure on the current team means it’s getting very hard, as they are working longer hours something has to give. If you or someone you know is looking for a full time (or possible 3-4 days p/wk neg) chef role with a friendly team, get in touch. Great hours - you start around 7.30am, kitchen closes at 2.30pm and you finish around 5pm. There is weekend work, 1-2 evenings a month and restaurant industry award wages offered. Sounds like you? OUT & ABOUT CWA COUNTRY KITCHENS RECIPE Banana and Pear Pikelets

QCWA Samford George has had a baby!

Serves: 4 Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 15 minutes 1 serve per portion

Usually it is one of the members announcing the happy news of welcoming new arrivals, but our pineapple plant “George” has flowered and we’re so happy.

We studied pineapples in 2022 as part of subject of primary produce. Unfortunately, we may have to wait a while for a pineapple to be picked. With festive season fast approaching, we had a very crafty special guest speaker Karen Wright (pictured) from Zenzero Design who talked to us all about her bowl making using material. Thank you to Karen for sharing her skills. We loved how she used recycling ideas to make gorgeous baskets into artful and useful pieces. It inspired many which is great as we’re going to sew pencil cases for Stationary Aid, a not-for-profit organisation that helps students be ready for next year. Christmas is fast approaching and we encourage members to start thinking about Christmas on Main Street on 2nd December. This is a wonderful afternoon/evening and we will be busy in the lead up cooking and making, so we can offer our baking, sewing and pre-loved high quality clothing for sale.

Country Kitchens has some great recipes – healthy, classic and quick. Our October reminder is that tinned fruits and vegetables are still nutrient dense and inexpensive. Here is a great Pikelet recipe using canned pears. You can search QCWA Samford on Facebook for more recipes too. Did you know we cater? QCWA Samford Branch caters for small to medium group functions and other special occasions. For all your Christmas party or end of year events, call Fiona on 0421 353 272. We also offer our Hall in Main Street for hire. It’s air-conditioned and has a really great kitchen. Give Lilah a call to learn more on 0421 709 723. Wednesday 15 November: Christmas Luncheon after our regular 10am meeting. BYO Sweet or Savoury. Reminder: No December meeting but dont forget Christmas on Main Street - 2 December. Visitors welcome. OUT & ABOUT Bushcare On Sunday 8 October our volunteers again split into two teams, with one team focusing on the upper bank planting where there was prolific sun weed growth in just 1 month since our last bushcare working bee. The main invasive weeds in this section are Guinea Grass, Leucaena, Castor Oil and ‘Glycine’ (Neonotonia). The second team focused on the Bowls Club end of rainforest revegetation zone P1, which is quite open, as well as being a favourite bird-roosting spot, so there was a variety of weeds to deal with, including ‘Trad’, Madeira Vine, Climbing Asparagus and Creeping Inch Weed. At 4pm, our volunteers enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea kindly provided by bushcare officer Debbie with other BYO contributions. Next month will be our final Council-led working bee for 2023, so we hope most of our registered volunteers will come along to give the site a big push before summer (new volunteers also most welcome!).

Then Stefan Hattingh will talk about using Barn Owls for the biological control of rodents. Finally, amphibian and reptile enthusiast Josiah Rossic will introduce us to the frogs of the greater Samford district. Morning tea will be provided. The numbers of attendees will be capped to the capacity of the venue, so you’ll need a ticket from EventBrite, a link for which you can find on our social media pages or just search ‘Eventbrite Eco-Corridor’ on the Web. In 2019 the band’s debut album premiered the group’s first original compositions and was highly commended in the Jazz category of the 2020 Queensland Music Awards. The album received great acclaim and airplay on ABC, Triple J, Double J, and community radio stations across Australia. You’re as likely to find Cigány Weaver packing out shows at festivals such as Woodford, Caloundra Music and MONA’s Dark Mofo in Tasmania, as seeking them out at a secret gig in a local jazz bar. CAN YOU HELP TOO? Christmas on Main Street happens on December 2. Our WISHMAS TREE activity stall is seeking old cards, colouring pencils, wax crayons, stickers and plastic tablecloths. If you can help, please drop donations in to the SCHUB (2204 Mt Samson Road near Millen Farm) on a Friday afternoon and join us for a cuppa. We are still seeking good quality picture books for our Christmas baby packs for Caboolture and Redcliffe maternity units. If you can help, we’d really appreciate it. We have found out that if we do what we can with what we have, and others help, we can make the world a little better, a little brighter for some. We also give ourselves a lift by enjoying what we do. The Good Stuff Ideas Forum planned for Friday 27 October is postponed due to very sad circumstances for our leader. Our love is with you. To replace it we will have group puzzles, odd games and things to keep our fingers busy, starting at 2pm with our Cuppa and a Chat.

OUT & ABOUT NEW LIFE IN AN HISTORIC BUILDING Where a cream cooling plant once stood is now a popular spot for visitors and locals alike to seek unique finds. Today’s Dayboro Butter Factory is home to an array of shops selling handmade clothing, ice cream and antiques; alongside services including a western-themed barber and remedial massage. The journey from dairy to contemporary has involved many highs and lows for the old building, which continues to be a community centrepiece 120 years on.

Officially opened in 1903, the Dayboro Butter Factory originally stood as a wooden building owned by the Silverwood Dairy Company. At the time it was stated to be the most up-to-date factory in Australia, with 170 local suppliers of cream making use of the shiny new facility. The factory saw enough success in its early days to warrant the opening of a general store in 1906. In 1916, local farmers joined forces to form the Terrors Creek-Samson Vale Co-operative Dairy Factory Company to take over the butter factory. From this optimistic start, disaster struck when the general store and adjacent

residence were devastated by fire in 1924. Five years later in 1929, the factory also caught fire and was completely destroyed. The building that now forms part of the Silverwood Cafe survived the blaze. Not a group to rest in the face of adversity, within one year, the co-op group of farmers had a new, sturdy brick building on the site to continue operations. For the next 35 years, butter continued to churn until the factory was deemed to have outlived its usefulness. In 1965, power was switched off and doors were shut. At this time, 90 suppliers were sending their milk to the factory and had to divert their efforts over 40 kilometres away to Brisbane. The building fell into disrepair until the 1980s when it was purchased and transformed into a commercial site to house various businesses, including Hire Connection Dayboro which is still lending out jack hammers, ladders and bobcats today. Current owners of the Dayboro Butter Factory then purchased the site in 2013. With little funds, self-confessed few skills, and looming debt, they focused their time on renovating enough spaces to attract tenants and cover costs. The historical nature of the building was the perfect location for antique and bookstore, Bohemian Décor, which was the first business to move into the updated site. Western themed barber, Dirty Hairy’s Barber Saloon soon followed. Both businesses are still running strong today. The cafe at the Butter Factory evolved through a few changes of hands to today’s Silverwood Cafe. Along the way, a lolly and ice cream shop opened which is now Sugar Rush Dayboro. Ever evolving outside its four walls, a pop-up shop sprung to life in an empty shop space one Dayboro Day, selling handmade linen clothing. This venture was so successful that the day turned into permanent shop, The Handmade Closet. Creativity has taken over the large main room of the Butter Factory. The Churn Room has blossomed into a workshop space to meet the artists who produce and sell their creative endeavours, as well as run workshops. Recently, an adjoining shed space has also been redeveloped into The Back Room, providing an exhibition space to compliment The Churn Room. We may not know what the next century will hold for this steadfast building, but it’s safe to say Dayboro Butter Factory does not spread itself thin. Tanya Hall

OUT & ABOUT

Samford Bowls Club Samford Bowls Club was chosen to host this year’s Brisbane District Challenge Shield, held on Sunday 15th October. This challenge is played by Brisbane, Cunningham, Gateway and Moreton Bay Districts and has been keenly contested since 2004. Brisbane District players from Chermside, Everton Park, Hamilton, Windsor and Samford Clubs played against very formidable opponents in a closely contested challenge. At the end of the day, Brisbane District were the overall winners by 3 shots. After 19 years, Brisbane District has finally won the shield! Congratulations to all players for a great competition. Pam Campbell represented Samford ladies in the winning Brisbane team. These events demand many hands to make the day run smoothly and our ladies did a first class job. We had two of the three umpires required, the office staff, the kitchen ladies who provided the morning teas and lunch for close on 80 players and officials, operated the bar and all the other jobs that were required. Well done Samford. The Men’s 2023 Two Bowl Triples final was played Saturday 14th. This was an exciting game with the scores very close throughout the game. The winners this year are David Englebright (Lead), Martyn Hewett (2nd) Alan Clark (Skip). The opposing team were Bruce Atkinson (Lead), Rod Palmer (2nd) and Peter Wilson (Skip). The Trivia Boys (Ken and Dave) were at it again on Friday 13th showing us all how much we don’t know! (The debate on whether eggplant grow on trees or shrubs will continue). These evenings are also an

excuse to dress up. There were Flower Power Hippies, Witches and Ghouls, Clowns plus all the ‘normal’ people! High achievers for the night were the Paul Bearers (not the sponsors!) and Magic Mushrooms. Samford Bowls Club would like to thank K.M. Smith Funeral Directors for their sponsorship of this fundraiser. Village Barefoot Bowls has commenced with the number of teams the best for some years. Samford Bowls Club would like to thank the community of Samford and surrounds for your support - we hope you have a great time. Some teams like the Bushrangers, Samford Rotary, and Bias a Beer are regulars, but there are some new names like Bias-a-Tinny and Bias-a-Jack too. If you would like to drop in on a Thursday night to have a look or to cheer on your favourite team, start time is around 6pm. Lawn Bowls is a family affair for the Palmer family. Samford members Rod and Kathy are well known at Samford, but it is their niece, Stella Palmer that is the star, taking out the under 18 singles Gold for Queensland. Chloe Collins from Tasmania

OUT & ABOUT Since the books sale, helpers have been taking a breather and concentrating on getting books onto shelves in the containers. Part of the process involves resorting books for duplicates, washing shelves which have been in storage for three years, and assembling frames. Another fifty shelves have been washed and dried, with one more batch of shelves to go. One new enthusiastic helper has been helping sort books, with some 10,000 yet to be sorted and shelved.

A RACE DAY FUNDRAISING BOOST A charity raffle conducted at the recent Everest Race Day at Eagle Farm has boosted Samford RDA’s fundraising efforts by more than $5,000. The 50:50 Charity Raffle is a not-for-profit initiative operated by the 50-50 Foundation to raise funds for charities throughout the State. Samford RDA was pleased to be invited to be a beneficiary of a race day raffle for the third time. Half the prize pool raised at each raffle goes to a lucky ticket holder, with the remaining 50 percent (less commission) going directly to the partner charity on the day. Samford RDA thanks Brisbane Racing Club, the 50-50 Foundation, and the team of dedicated RDA volunteers who gave up

a Saturday to sell tickets to racegoers and promote the work of Riding for the Disabled Association. Samford RDA also thanks long-time supporters, State Member Nikki Boyd and Federal Member Peter Dutton for their recent financial contributions. Both local representatives renewed their annual sponsorships of RDA horses, which greatly assist to meet the costs of feeding and caring for their sponsored horses. Nikki Boyd has sponsored Misty for several years and regularly visits the RDA centre at Samford Showgrounds to check on her progress. Peter Dutton has sponsored several horses over the years and is yet to personally meet his latest sponsored horse, newcomer Peppy. Pictured: Some of the Samford RDA volunteers with the winner of the charity raffle at Eagle Farm.

In the background, an application Request for Tenure of Council Land is about to be submitted, with multiple local groups providing letters of support. The application by no means is any guarantee of land and/ or buildings, however the application adds CLS into the pool of NFP groups requiring land and/or buildings. In the very near future, CLS expects to receive official confirmation of approval for a change of name. Separately, new shelving for books, games and puzzles in the storage shed is in the process of being assembled. The shed should be all in order before Christmas. Corrugated iron is expected to be fitted to the shed doors (in keeping with the nature of the shed building) in the next couple of weeks. Anyone who would be willing to lend a helping hand is most welcome. Contact details below. As the year draws steadily to a close, the trailer will be out and about for one or two outings. Samford Area Mens Shed Who’s Who @ SAMS Meet Allen! Given our members’ mature demographics and anything-but-mature approach to life in general, you’d expect a retired Ambulance Officer such as Allen here, to be run off his feet at SAMS. And you’d be right, but for reasons of his own choosing. Not only is he in charge of our busy Events & Entertainment committee, he’s also our volunteer Welfare Officer, trains us how to wrangle the difibril deefrib the heart starter thing, has organised a guided tour of the Emergency Communications Complex, and never misses a chance to mention in passing that he was the Australasian Table Tennis Champion back when things were really tough, unlike these days. Although we’ve yet to see any of his medals, trophies, ribbons or certificates of participation, his self-taught skill with a one-handed bat and a little gas-filled ball speaks volumes. Incidentally, of all the Brisbane Lions supporters at SAMS, Allen is by far the most recent and in fact he’s the only one we’ve ever had. He’s the AFL Club’s #1 Fan, and to his credit he keeps

his boundless enthusiasm for his Team to himself - except on Home days when he lounges in his Gabba seat, fully decked out in Lions merch, and suddenly jumps up and yells, “Hey Umpire! You’re missing a great game!” Rumour has it he was on TV once. Sometimes, at our Friday Fun & Fridge afternoons, we let him tell scary tales of his past life as an Ambo and all the things that could possibly go wrong if you house swap with complete strangers far away in a foreign country, which for all you know may not even have any houses. He’s proven

OUT & ABOUT ART IN BLOOM Art and flowers blossom together in an upcoming exhibition featuring local artist Helen Evans against the backdrop of Camp Mountain flower farm The Acres/Woggoon. Sponsored by Samford’s Rusty Bucket Floristry, the exhibition A Sense of Place: A Collaboration is a weekend celebration of art and nature, with all proceeds from the day being donated to our local rural fire brigade.

Helen has been the resident artist at The Acres since May this year. The exhibition marks her six month residency milestone, and will showcase her response to the flowers, farm and landscape.

Works on display will include en plein air paintings (painting entire finished pictures out of doors), drawings, studio paintings and original prints. “As the seasons change, so does the landscape at The Acres, each day brings something new. The farm’s cyclical rhythm has become a big part of my practice,” Helen said. “The changing seasons from winter to spring, as the heat and dry build are proving to be an essential part of the en plein air experience as my palette alters with each week.” Helen’s brush with nature seeks to vividly

capture the farm in its most unfiltered form. Her sketchbooks, filled with raw, unfiltered insights, will also be available for viewing for those with an interest in the creative process behind the final artworks. The Acres/Woggoon Farm, is a working farm supplying blooms to Rusty Bucket Floristry in Samford Village. Rarely open to the public, this exhibition provides a unique opportunity for the community to experience the flourishing farm. Where: The Acres Flower Farm, Camp Mountain, 4520. THE SPECTACULAR OVERLAND TRACK Our next meeting on Tuesday 3 October in the CWA Hall, Main St, Samford at 6.45pm for a 7.00pm start, will feature Angie Fairweather who will take us on a botanical tour of the spectacular Overland Track in Tasmania. In November 2022, Angie walked from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair through the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. This is the only glacial shaped landscape in Australia, and is dominated by open fields of Button Grass, which would make walking extremely difficult if it wasn’t for the nearly 40km of raised boardwalks that also protect the wonderful local flora. Visitors are welcome at meetings and attendees are encouraged to bring along labelled native plant specimens for our ‘show and tell’ segment. This month we will be featuring mistletoes and their host plants. After the presentation, we serve refreshments and draw the plant raffle (bring a little cash).

At our October meeting, we were enthralled by young entomologist Jessa Thurman who described several plant-insect interactions. We learned that the ancient Bolwarra plant found in our local rainforests is pollinated by weevils that normally live underground and have to find the flowers that last just one day. Jessa said that every species of fig tree has its own specialised wasp that pollinates the ‘flowers’ inside the fig. The female wasp lays her eggs in the fig using an ovipositor. The only role of the male wasp is to mate with a female and to chew a hole in the developing fig so the young wasps can emerge. The larvae of the Giant Wood Moth, the heaviest in the world, create tunnels in the wood of certain eucalypts and these hollows later provide homes for frogs and other creatures. The rarely seen adult moths live just five days because they don’t have a mouth and can’t feed. We thank Jessa for a fascinating presentation. Peter Storer

OUT & ABOUT Samford Museum CAST IRON LAMP POSTS English inventor Arthur Kitson calculated the principles of his luminous system in 1885. Two cast iron lamps inscribed with 349 KITSON LIGHT BRISBANE including a storage base, stand, forked top and a mantle housing were installed on diagonally opposite sides of the train line crossing at Main Street. One at the eastern corner of Progress Street and the other near the entrance to the railway timber yard at the south western corner of Station Street (John Scott Park). In 2009, three cast iron lamp stands were restored to the Samford Village precinct. They were relics of the two lamps kindly returned by their private owners to public

ownership as a contribution to the State’s sesquicentennial celebrations. One of the lamps has been converted to electric light and it is proudly positioned near The Samford Museum’s Provisional School. From time to time it has been maintained by different volunteers. Recently it was found the crown of the lamp post had rusted away. The new one was copied and replaced as well as given a fresh coat of green paint to match its original colour. The glass panels also required some attention and a good wash in warm soapy water. So with the latest “work in progress” finalised, it now stands presentable, shiny and looking new again. It is also connected to electricity and can be utilised on request. Do gas lamps still exist today in this electric world? Yes of course they do. Gas streetlamps shine in modern homes and gardens. It appears they produce a warm, cosy and genuine impression in those areas along with a relaxed ambience. Join us at the museum for a very interesting walk around. We are open on Wednesdays and Sundays 10am - 4pm. Groups welcome. Phone 3289 2743. Volunteers always a welcome asset to our museum.

To add to the night, the Bring and Buy table was loaded with a variety of home cooked goodies. The club welcomes visitors to the November festive season celebrations at the Aspley Hornets Football Club in Carseldine, 21st November 6.30pm for a 7pm start. This will be the last dinner meeting for 2023 and we’d love you to join us as we come together to celebrate the meaning of Christmas and to also reflect on the past year. We are proud of our members fundraising efforts which support our students through The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program. If you’d like to make a difference to a child’s life and at the same time meet likeminded ladies, don’t miss this dinner. We have great fun – there will be raffles and laughter as well as musical entertainment by Maurice and Natalie Mead. Come festively dressed and don’t forget to bring along your best carolling voices as we will be having a Christmas sing along. If dinner meetings are difficult for you to attend, we also have a Coffee and Chat on the first Saturday of each month at 10am at White’s Coffee Co., Bracken Ridge Tavern. On 2nd December we’ll be turning the sausages at the Bunnings Brendale Sausage Sizzle which has been a valued contributor to our fundraising efforts this year. Our first meeting for 2024 will be 16th January. If you’re attending our November dinner or you’d like to learn more about our club, get in touch with our Secretary Shayne on 0409 991 428. OUT & ABOUT EXPERIENCING NEW HEIGHTS There are many options for taking part in outdoor fitness, but none quite as unique as Bunya’s Skyline Aerial Arts; an outside aerial studio providing aerial silks and lyra classes. While these began as circus performance arts, both aerial silks and lyra are now a fun and unique way for people to get fit with a smile on their face. Claire Luckman started this high-flying studio after she discovered an unexpected love of exercising while soaring to new heights. “My friend asked me to go along with her to a pole fitness class around 11 years ago. At that point I was in my early thirties with two young children and not having exercised in the few years prior. I didn’t think it would be for me, not having grown up doing dance or gymnastics, but I wanted to be a good friend so I went along,” Claire said. “To my surprise I really enjoyed it and I began to take notice of the aerials that were also being taught in the same space. Before long I had signed up to try aerial skills and then also lyra and I’ve never looked back.” Aerial silks use pieces of fabric suspended from overhead and lyra (or aerial hoop) employs a suspended circular steel hoop. Participants can use either apparatus to climb, spin, swing and pose. Claire enjoys the physical challenge of aerials and also loves the performing arts nature of the activity as well. “It’s so much more fun than a lot of traditional forms of exercise and never gets boring or repetitive. Being able to float through the air weightless, feels like your own little secret superpower,” she said. While some of her students have been doubtful as they stepped under the hoops, many of them have been surprised at how much they enjoyed the classes. “I’ve had many students begin thinking that a lot of the skills are out of reach for them. It’s amazing to see them surpass their own expectations and you can see how much it boosts their self-esteem,” Claire said. “I’ve also seen many lasting friendships formed between students taking classes together and a really special sense of community where the students cheer each other on.” Claire has soared to success in this unique sport placing first in Open Apparatus Solo Masters Division at Bend The Air Brisbane 2023, which is an aerial, acrobatics and

circus arts competition. She will now compete at Bend The Air Nationals in January 2024. She also placed third in Duo Lyra at Miss Lyra QLD this year with her performance partner Tamara Kuypers under their stage name Clara. Both performances are available to watch on the Skyline Aerial Arts Facebook Page. Despite these personal achievements, Claire finds the most satisfaction in helping others experience the highs and highs of this activity. “I’ve been coaching for a couple of years now and I really enjoy it. I’m very excited to commence offering aerial lessons at my home in Bunya and make this accessible to my local community. There are discounted private trial lessons currently for new students and I’m available for both private and small group bookings. I also offer small group matwork Pilates classes in an airconditioned studio so check out the website for classes.” www.skylineaerialarts.com Tanya Hall

Tiger Lawson Award: 3 Fred Schloss, 2 Tim Mouritz , 1 Mark Cassimaty Well, the day started with everyone waiting for someone to open the gate… a very rare sight! No Bert! The upside was that this allowed Chris Roberts to make his debut as umpire. The Leg-ends won the toss and fielded to see what the weather man was on about. Charlie Geddes got an early start with a couple lovely shots to the boundary, and the next hit flew high into the Highvale skies. With eyes locked on the ball, Joey Lauze made the catch look too easy. Kevin Crawley was bowled by Johnny Lauze soon after. After all the wicket action there was a change in pace, with Tim Mouritz making a great show of his 61 runs not out, retired. He was partnered by Jack McCullough who put together a handy 33, but was struck close to the wicket when bowled. Rob Topp added needed value to the score with 23 in the latter part of the innings but was stumped by David Cobbald from a loopy spin ball from Andy Green. Dayboro finished with 184 runs – a tough target. The youth involved in Chronicle Cup this season deserve a mention, showing that Chronicle is alive. Laura Topp, Zac Crawley, and Fred Schloss (pictured) all showed off their young talent on Sunday. Into the Leg-end’s innings the wind arrived. Pete Lane and David Cobbald started the Leg-ends off steadily with 19 and 38 respectively, until Robb Topp took Pete Lane’s middle stump. Then Michael Schloss joined Rangers David Cobbald at the crease Dayboro to steady things and hit some nicely placed boundaries. A Cowboys good catch from Tim Mourtiz Mongrels saw David Cobbald depart and Samford Village Joey Lauze was to follow soon People after with a caught behind by Leg ends Michael Freeman.

The game was in the balance for the Leg-ends when young Fred Schloss entered the crease – a proud moment for his father Michael, who was yet to know he would be coached by Fred at the bowler’s end later on. Fred was the star of the batting with 33 not out and staying in until the end. But it wasn’t made easy with Mark Cassimaty at the death on a roll to take a hat trick – looking for another wicket. Andy Green was sent to face the music with 10 balls and 5 runs to win. Leg-ends held on to win another nail biter. Andy Green Leg-ends

BOOK REVIEWS BY JULIE MARTIN BOOK OF QUESTIONS Pablo Neruda Illustrated by Paloma Valdivia My grandmother always asserted that there was a distinct difference between a book lover and a lover of books. I have been a book lover all my life, wrapping myself in a many coloured quilt of the world’s stories. Today I became again a lover of books, enthralled by the sensory experience of receiving a superbly produced picture book filled with whimsical, magical poetry: Pablo Neruda’s Book of Questions, illustrated by Paloma Valdivia. Chilean Pablo Neruda was a poet diplomat who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971. He was one of the great poets of the last century. His exquisite poetry is written in Spanish but translator, Sara Leisa Paulson, has captured perfectly his childlike creativity. Spanish text is integrated with the English translation into the magnificent illustrations. The Editor (the capital is meant as a tribute to her sensitivity) selected seventy questions from Veruda’s original three hundred and twenty in seventy- four poems, so they flow seamlessly. Who shouted for joy when the colour blue was born? Illustrator Paloma Valdivia has grounded her stylised artwork firmly in Chilean tradition, using blues, reds and yellows against black or white backgrounds. So my eyes have feasted but let me tell you about the rest of the experience. The package was heavy. When opened, the glorious smell of fine printer’s ink exploded into the air. The book itself is beautifully bound, a tactile pleasure. The paper has a rich linen texture. It is pure joy, a fitting tribute to a poet who gave the world so much. The book sits on my desk, an inspiration, a delight, and the ink smell is still faintly in the air.

NEXT SDPPA MEETING Wednesday 15th November Samford Community Hub (SCHUB). 7pm start. All welcome. Further information: secretary@samfordprogress.org.au.

THOSE WHO PERISH Emma Viskic Emma Viskic, many-awardwinning author, has released the last and best of the Caleb Zelic series, Those Who Perish. Treat yourself to a walk through this deaf crime investigator’s chaotic world, where hearing aids can cause major problems, lip reading is essential, signing is a way to communicate things you don’t want others to know and the ability to read people and their interactions is vital. Zelic’s a small-town kid with a bully father, a brother Ant who’s a drug addict, and a pregnant wife Kat wounded in Caleb’s exploits before, who wants to give birth on country. Caleb gets a cryptic warning that Ant, missing for months, is in trouble. He discovers his brother hunkered down dodging sniper bullets, finds out he’s been in an isolated rehab centre with weird connections to a man’s body pulled out of the bay, the sniper with a growing body count, a tattooed arm, a white van, NeoNazis and a cheesemaker with an atrocious

taste in cardigans. Caleb is his own worst enemy. He often misunderstands and fights with the brother he would die for. He is madly in love with his wife Kat, but the way he lives scares her. He takes on more than he can manage. The plot is complicated. Readers might be bamboozled sometimes - uncertain of whether Caleb has the slightest clue as to what’s happening and you’re right there with him. The more things get out of control, the more Caleb turns inwards. He’s always struggled with insecurities, his father refused to acknowledge his deafness. You suspect that though Caleb’s trying to get his act together, he’s going to stuff it up. Viskic has created a powerful novel with succinct, rapid paced, descriptive language and interesting, realistic characters who are far from perfect. A must to read.
