LOCAL NEWS ALL MUMS CELEBRATED ON MOTHER’S DAY AlFresh’Co Catering and The Village Pump’s Mother’s Day competition received so many entries, we wanted to celebrate all local mums who so often place others’ needs ahead of their own. The well-deserved Mother’s Day competition winner was Larissa Mearns, who recently undertook multiple chemotherapy sessions to beat cancer, and continues to look after her two children while being employed full-time with her husband often working away. Larissa was delighted with the opportunity to share her Samford Harvest Mother’s Day lunch with her daughter Amaya, mum Ann and long-time friend Nina. (pictured with Chef Alastair McLeod) “The Mother’s Day lunch was fabulous. The food was beyond amazing, Alastair and team provided a warm friendly personalised experience, and the worldclass entertainment delivered us a perfect day,” she said. Alastair and Ashleigh McLeod of AlFresh’Co Catering were privileged to honour so many incredible women as part of their Samford Harvest Mother’s Day lunch. “It was a delight to be able to break bread together as a community and appreciate food prepared using local producers. It was very special to cook for my mum and to have her join harpist Kim Kirkman. You could have heard a pin drop,” said Alastair. A common theme among entrants was mothers thinking of others in the family before themselves, and inspiring through their own acts of fortitude. Larissa Mearns was nominated by her teenage daughter, Amaya, who called her, “the most hardworking, supportive, intelligent and strongest person I know.” “My mother has taught me that when

the going gets tough the tough get going. She has taught me so much more than I could have learnt from a book. She is driven and smart and sets an inspirational example,” Amaya said. “When I was younger, I did not fully understand the capabilities of my mum. I can now appreciate how intelligent and dedicated she is. I realise how much she has shaped and impacted my life for the better and always does things in my best interests,” she said. Despite generational differences, Larissa has a similar gratitude for the support she receives from her own mother. “My mum is the rock. She’s honest, selfless and our moral compass. I have a demanding job, my husband travels a lot and I juggle my child‘s intensive athletics program after hours. Without my mum assisting us in meal preparation, school pick-ups and drop-offs, life would be very difficult. I can’t thank her enough,” Larissa said. “After becoming a mother you have a better perspective of the challenges and sacrifices your own parents made in order to give you the very best loving home, opportunities and upbringing possible.” Alistair’s mum Faye Ann McLeod is also known as Candy Devine, a broadcaster, singer and actress. Despite these accomplishments, she faced many similar day-to-day activities that so many other mums experience. “My mum (and dad) worked so hard to put food on the table for our family. Despite their work schedule, we always gathered around the dining table and shared our news of the day. There was unconditional

encouragement, rigour, humour, games and great food,” Alastair said. “I’ve always looked up to my mum as a selfless, loving, hardworking, intelligent and strong woman. As I navigate life as a parent, I have a greater appreciation for how she kept us as her priority,” he added. Congratulations again to Larissa, and a heartfelt thank you to all local mums for so often prioritising others’ needs ahead of your own. Thank you to Seasonal Blooms Florists, CoCouture Chocolates and BWS Samford for adding to Larissa’s day with their beautiful gifts. Tanya Hall

And another thing – If you’ve never attended a Samford Harvest lunch or dinner and experienced the beautifully prepared menu sourced from local providores and prepared by Alastair and his team, you’re missing out. This is not only a first class hospitality experience, it’s a celebration of locally produced food by dedicated farmers, connecting you directly to them. www.samfordharvest.com.au

QUEENSLAND DAY - 6 JUNE Samford Museum

June 6th is Queensland Day - the date we celebrate Queensland’s official separation from New South Wales in 1859. Queen Victoria signed the Letters Patent, approving Queensland becoming a separate colony to New South Wales, with its own representative government. Queensland is also known as “the Sunshine State”. The song The Sunshine State, by Queensland composer Clyde Collins, was written for the centenary of Queensland in 1959. Horrie Dargie (19171999) recorded the song in 1959. A little closer to home Samford Valley Morning by local artist the late Jim Harding sings the praises of a special spot in Queensland. Queensland Day is a day to celebrate our heritage and culture. Samford Museum endeavours to collect, preserve and make available to visitors as much as possible, greater Samford’s 171 years of settlement while acknowledging the local First Nations people. There is evidence, from the early 1850s, which indicates that Irish ex-convict entrepreneur, Darby McGrath (1804-1892),

was the first pastoralist to graze stock (sheep) in what we know as the Samford Valley in association with his ‘The Gap Station’ on Enoggera Creek. McGrath formalised the lease of 10,240 acres (16 square miles) of land in today’s Samford Valley on 11 September 1851. In 1855, Archibald Young became the next lessee of portions of land on the South Pine River. The earliest instance The bullock team in Queensland’s Centenary Parade in Countess Street Brisbane. LOCAL NEWS Cedar Creek Public Hall is a true community hall built by the community and run by volunteers from the community for the community. There are currently about 55 people supporting the Hall as members. Many people have contributed to its history over the years, and this recent support illustrates the community spirit which the hall has generated over the decades. In December 2021, two of the Hall’s members, Sean and Jan Crawford, owner/ operators of local concreting business SP Crawford Concreting, donated a 3m x 3m shed to the Hall and offered to lay a concrete base. The constant wet weather held up operations but eventually the turf was lifted by Craig Henderson, and then there was the waiting through more and more rain and for the ground to dry out. Sean had offered to run a workshop to show locals how to lay a concrete slab. Unfortunately the unpredictability of the weather made it impossible to plan for this which everyone understood. Finally, a couple of months later and without any fuss, Sean and Jan grabbed a dry morning and quietly arrived to lay the slab - smooth and square and perfect. “The hall is owned by this community, so it was a no-brainer for Jan and I to help when we could,” said Sean.

SHAVING WITH FRIENDS Students at Ferny Grove State School are Shaving For a Cure on June 3rd. The Event is run by the Student Representative Council (SRC) and coincides with a Free Dress Day. A $2 donation will provide much needed funds to the World’s Greatest Shave, an initiative of the Leukemia Foundation which is on a mission for a future free of blood cancer. Students from Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 will be participating in the shave. “My friend Nikita and I are doing it together, our families are really happy and supportive. Anyone can help, no matter how big or small,” said Aerynn. “I met a little girl named Poppy who had bowel cancer and she inspired me to do this to help people with all kinds of cancer. My family have supported me through all of this and helped me to fundraise,” added Ciara. Students have the opportunity to spray their hair vibrant colours in the morning before school and at morning tea. Some Year 12 boys are going to wax their legs in

Once the slab was dry, the Hall’s committee members took over, gathering with their partners and neighbours to spend an amicable afternoon and evening getting the shed into place. Sean and Jan came to officially ‘cut the ribbon’, so the shed is now ready. Since then, Sean has been in to seal the base of the shed to the concrete slab, making it watertight. The Hall now has some extra storage space, fitting perfectly between the water tank and the toilet block. With all this wet weather over the past 6 months, Sean identified a real issue with people’s concrete driveways and pathways, particularly for the elderly. The constant wet was causing people to slip over, some incurring fatal injuries. So, when the weather makes it impossible for them to do their usual concreting jobs, Sean and Jan head out with their high pressure hose, to clean down driveways of community members who are unable to do it themselves. “It’s better than sitting at home doing nothing,” said Sean. “We have the equipment and we can help people, so why wouldn’t we?” he added. support, before the main shave event takes place at lunch time so all students can get behind their classmates. “I have participated in Shave for a Cure for 2 years now, it has become a tradition. My family have helped and supported me through it and I like doing it because it’s for a good cause and I want to raise awareness for leukemia,” said Nikita.

Thank you, Sean and Jan, for your community-minded generosity, the world needs more people like you. EDIBLE GARDEN TRAIL UPDATE

SAMFORD’S COMMUNITY GARDEN LAUNCHES The heavy rain over the planned Open Trail weekend meant that we had to make the difficult decision to postpone - we will announce new dates as soon as possible once this rain stops! Even though the gardens were closed, thanks to Samford Scouts who loaned us their shelter shed, we were able to continue with our announcement of the Samford Community Garden site right here in the heart of Samford Village. Samford Scouts has generously offered a triangle of land at the end of their property, as the site for the new garden.

WHAT SHOULD WE CALL IT? Do you have a great idea for a name? We want a name that reflects the place – what has gone before on that location, as well as what it will now become. Please send your entries to samfordegt@gmail.com by June 30th to be in the running to win a copy of the book Costa’s World signed by Costa himself. HOW WILL THE GARDEN THRIVE? We know that water doesn’t seem to be a problem at the moment, however longterm water supply will be essential for the operation of the Samford Community Garden. Samford Scout Group is planning to contribute to this need by harvesting rainwater from the roofs of their buildings. Rainwater harvesting is an excellent source of water for plants and landscape irrigation, since it has no chemicals such as fluoride and chloramines (chlorine). The rainwater is planned to be stored in tanks and piped underground to the garden site for use. Samford Scout Group is currently seeking funding for this project and invites interested donors or contributors to contact Group Leader David Reed at gl@samford. scoutsqld.com.au. LOCAL ARTISTS, MAKERS AND CREATORS WE NEED YOU! One of the most important parts of a garden is of course the entrance. We are inviting any local artists, makers and creators, to submit a design for the entrance archway and gate – closing date June 30th. The winning applicant will be announced in July and will be remunerated for their design. Interested applications please email for an EOI. samfordegt@gmail.com

Thank you to the community who came along to participate in the interactive design workshop – and thank you to Costa Giorgiadis who donated his time to be there to celebrate this milestone. We are sure that every person who was there to hear him speak received a big dose of inspiration. We were privileged to have Aunty Mulara do an Acknowledgment of Country and share with us the rich indigenous history of our valley. We gratefully acknowledge our other official guests - Mandy Bell from Community Bank Samford, Darryl Scott - Chief Commissioner of Scouts Qld, Ken Perkins - Vice-President of the Samford and Districts Progress and Protection Association, Darren Grimwade our local MBRC Councillor. Thank you to all for the support to get this initiative off the ground. THE VILLAGE PUMP 27 MAY 2022– Page 7

EPIPHYTIC ORCHIDS OF MT GLORIOUS Our May meeting proved very popular, with the return of Doug and Kath Brownlow of Eden Bush Foods. Over 25 years ago, this intrepid couple purchased a steep block in Camp Mountain and worked with nature to create a successful bush food operation, producing mainly Davidson’s Plum, Aniseed Myrtle and Lemon Aspen. They carried out extensive revegetation and regeneration work under the guidance of the late Jack Mitchell to create a rainforest habitat,

enabling Eden to be registered under the Land for Wildlife program. The following weekend we visited Eden to see the results of their labour and to meet Chris Brown of Pink Galah Specialty Foods: a local chef who uses Doug and Kath’s produce is his fabulous pastries. After a comprehensive and informative tour of the property, we enjoyed a scrumptious morning tea that included Aniseed Myrtle Lamington’s with wattle seed, Finger Lime tartlets, Davidson Plum brownies and Lemon Aspen and apple tartlets. We thank Doug, Kath and Chris for a fabulous talk,

garden tour and those tasty treats! Our next meeting, to be held on Tuesday 7 June in the CWA Hall, Main St, Samford at 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start, will feature Branch member and nurseryman Roman Busianczuk who will describe the life cycles of the epiphytic native orchids of Mt Glorious. Epiphytic orchids are those that grow on trees, often high in the canopy, but how they get there is an intriguing story. Each orchid has a complex relationship with certain tree species and at a particular stage of the tree’s development. Come along and find out more about this fascinating and little-known story. Before the talk, we will have our usual ‘show and tell’ of native plant specimens. After the talk, we serve refreshments, draw the plant raffle and socialise. Peter Storer

I make this request, that people don’t put out rat baits, because a bird like this could have died from eating its prey that was killed by such a bait. These beautiful animals were here long before we moved into the area. I hope it flies high in eagle heaven. Chris W

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY - 5 JUNE

THE ONE AND ONLY For those who have been following the USA’s Congressional Hearings on UFO’s (or UAP’s - Unidentified Aerial Phenomena, as they have been renamed) we could be excused for thinking there may be another earth-like planet and civilisation out there in the universe. However, the United Nations is yet to be convinced, so World Environment Day on 5 June has been given the by-line ‘Only One Earth’ by the 2022 host country Sweden.

The point being made because the world as a whole is using the equivalent of 1.6 of the earth’s resources to maintain our current way of life, and ecosystems cannot keep up with our demands. More so, we Aussies are using the equivalent of about 5 earth’s resources to keep living the way we are. No wonder lots more people are wanting each day to be treated as World Environment Day, so that we can reverse the trend and use not only our natural resources more intelligently, but also reduce the social and emotional cost of the effects of climate change. Not to mention that, according to the UN, “on the financial front, every year, we lose ecosystem services worth more than 10 percent of our global economic output”.

The gap between what we need to spend to adapt and what we are actually spending is widening. Estimated costs of adaptation continue to rise and could reach US$280500 billion per year for developing countries alone. There’s lots that could and should be done by us all and maybe we should take some sage advice from whoever said: “change is more likely to come when everybody does something, no matter how small, as different to one or two big things being done by a few.” Maybe one of the simplest things we can do on World Environment Day is to choose to do at least one thing for our “Only One Earth” as proposed on online resources like www.worldenvironmentday.globalgetinvolved/practicalguide, or maybe go to another free site like our Samford grown www.greenstreet.net.au/badges And of course, buy local, including from the businesses belonging to the Samford Sustainable Business Precinct and the Chamber of Commerce. LOCAL NEWS ROVER SCOUTS HOLDEN-ON Members of the Ironbark Rover Scout Unit recently attended the Test ‘n’ Track (TnT) Moot at Canungra on May Day weekend. TnT Moot is the prequel event for ‘Banana Bash’ and is designed for Queensland Rovers to test their bash cars, gain experience driving on various tracks, and make essential repairs and upgrades to their cars. The Ironbark Rover Crew is a Rover Scout Unit of 18-25 year olds, in the Sir Leslie Wilson District, Brisbane North Region. It is made up of former units in the District Enoggera, Everton Park, Grovely-Mitchelton, McDowall-Bunya, Samford, Wahminda Park. With the unit’s recent growth over the years, a second bash car was in the works prior to the event. Our own Arthur Brumler worked tirelessly to coordinate all works on the car leading up to the event. Together, Rovers spent many hours working on building the new bash car to be ready for TnT, with ‘Holden-On’ making its first appearance. Holden-On is registered to Samford Scout Group, was donated by a Samford Scout Leader and a number of Samford Leaders have given their time to

help get it up to spec for the event. The weekend proved to be very wet with continuous rain causing muddy conditions. But the unit weren’t deterred! After some welding and paddles put on, their new car ‘Holden-On’ and their second car ‘Conformadore’ were ready for the tracks! Ironbark Rovers drove continuously during the weekend’s events, motoring around the practice track, short track, and long track. There were 15 cars and various other Queensland Rover Units also in attendance, making for a very fun and successful weekend with friends! Ironbark would like to thank all the TnT committee (including our own Lachlan

Skipworth as car scrutineer) for running such a fabulous event, Mal and Gary for all their contributions to the cars, our Rover Advisor Keith Morris, Arthur and his family for assisting with towing both cars to and from the event, and our other supporters for providing essential parts to make this weekend a success. The Rover Scouts are now focusing on preparing both cars for Banana Bash Moot in October, which will be really exciting. To keep up with all of our adventures, please follow us on Facebook (Ironbark Rover Scout Unit) or Instagram (ironbark. roverscouts)

LOCAL NEWS SAME GREAT BANK – BETTER SPACE Samford is set to become North Brisbane’s major community banking hub, as the Community Bank Samford undergoes a makeover transformation which will see its staff across Brendale and Samford branches come together, to an enhanced modern banking facility. For the past 20 years, Brendale’s residential and industrial precinct has been home to the Community Bank Brendale, part of Bendigo Bank. Two decades later, times have changed and the way in which customers do their banking has too. Pine Rivers Community Finance (PRCF), which owns and operates the Community Bank Brendale and Samford, welcomes the change with open arms and believes it is a beneficial move which will benefit the whole community. Mandy Bell, Senior Branch Manager said, “It was a natural progression in recent years for the business decision to be made. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic over the past two-and-a-bit years, we have noticed that most of our residential and business customers are banking more online.” “The refurbishment of our Samford location incorporating all our staff at the one branch will be an incredible transition. We look forward to sharing our wealth of knowledge across our residential and business teams.” “So far, the feedback has been really positive and the local Brendale businesses and residents are looking forward to experiencing our Samford Branch firsthand

and the good old fashioned village hospitality.” Since launching in 2002, the bank’s loyal customers have enabled PRCF to donate more than $750,000 to local community groups and clubs. “We always try and give back to the community in any way we can. From supporting local schools in the region, through to sporting club sponsorships and event support, Community Bank Samford and Brendale was built by the community for the community, and we love to give back and ensure that our community is celebrated in more ways than one,” said PRCF Chair, Kellie O’Brien. “The new flagship branch will have a wealth of experience at its fingertips, with staff from across the Pine Rivers region, some of whom have been in the area all their lives. Bringing together our customer support staff, through to our lending and borrowing home loan specialists and business account managers, we look forward to continuing our expert service to our valued customers. At Community Bank Samford we are all about supporting the community, local businesses and families, helping people to reach their financial potential,” said Ms Bell. “On behalf of PRCF and the Community Bank Samford team, we all look forward to welcoming you into the new flagship Community Bank Samford branch, right here in the heart of the region,” said Ms O’Brien.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT Samford Support Network Working together to help local community members

Did you know driving could provide well needed support? The SSN has been a volunteer communitybased care service for over 11 years and has supported many residents of the Samford Valley during this time. Frequent feedback to the members (volunteers) and Management Committee is along the lines of “The SSN were my life saver”, “I am not sure how I would have got through that recovery without the support of the SSN” or “I have discovered many wonderful friendships through the SSN” - and we could go on. We recognise that the Network provides a very important support to many people, and we are reliant on the kindness and commitment of our members who provide this needed support in many ways. Many of you may not be aware that one of the services the SSN offers is a pick-up and drop-off transport of SSN registered

clients to medical appointments, social events and other needs. Clients are driven in a member’s privately owned car. This service is subject to the availability of our wonderful volunteer drivers and requires a minimum of 3 business days’ notice to organise. A small client contribution of between $2.50 and $20 is made depending on the distance travelled. The SSN subsidises the rest of the cost of each drive. Currently this service is stretched - we have an increased need for drives and a shortage of drivers. We average 80 drives a month and these drives fall on the shoulders of a small handful of drivers. Drive Coordinator Kate Boddington works tirelessly to keep the wheels of the Transport section rolling and says of her role, “It gives me the greatest of pleasure to help the Samford Valley community, volunteering in this way is such a rewarding occupation. As the Coordinator and also a driver, my role also gives me the opportunity to regularly check in with many interesting people - a lovely chat and a joke to hopefully brighten their day whilst also helping them.” Do you have some spare time available to do any drives, or if you are not able to,

do you know someone who can? A partner or family member? A friend or a neighbour? If we were able to find a small handful of people who each had a few hours free per month we would be able to continue to provide this important, high demand service to those that are in genuine need of it. Kathie Prior, a current driver says, “I enjoy driving and meeting light-hearted people. There is no pressure, I can accept drives to fit in with my lifestyle. It’s a good feeling knowing that you are giving something back to our local community while making new friends.” We thank Kate and all of our current drivers for being there, it is a wonderful service to be able to provide and each drive we provide removes countless hours of worry for our clients. Do you have time to help? We have Coordinator roles currently vacant – please see our website at www. s a m fo r d s u p p o r t n e t wo r k . c o m fo r information on these. OUT & ABOUT SKYFALL STAR LENDS A HAND TO CARERS Queensland’s first lady of cabaret and co-star of the upcoming musical performance Skyfall – The Music of James Bond, will be hitting the high notes in support of Samford-based The Carers Foundation Australia. Naomi Price will perform at the Foundation’s WHO CARES? Fundraising Luncheon at Victoria Park Golf Complex on Friday 17 June, with the event hosted by media personality Margaux Parker. Co-Founder and Managing Director of The Carers Foundation Australia, Ronnie Benbow, said the event showcases support for ‘unsung heroes’ – the almost three million unpaid carers in Australia. These carers – some as young as eightyears-old – are experiencing high levels of stress and mental illness as a result of their unpaid caring role. The Carers Foundation Australia provides wellbeing programs from its Cedar Creek Retreat, at no cost to carers. These one and three day wellbeing programs, specialise in evidence-based health restoration for unpaid family carers, aiming to prevent mental and health crisis breakdowns caused due to compassion fatigue. For many, this is the only break they get from round-theclock caring responsibilities, which leave many carers under severe mental anguish. Two in three carers suffer from a mental health issue, and that number is even higher among teenage carers. Continued high demand for its programs has seen The Carers Foundation Australia

outgrow its current premises, with plans for a new facility to be purchased in the area. The Foundation receives no government funding and needs to raise $5 million to purchase the new facility and help more carers. Event details including a discount code for local residents is in the advertisement on page 10. Tickets: https://events.humanitix. com/who-cares-luncheon-170622.

Naomi and Ronnie catch up.

DIVISION 11 COUNCIL REPORT WEATHER AFFECTING ROADS I have been contacted by many residents regarding the condition of roads across Division 11 after the two major weather events that have been experienced over the past months. In particular, the condition of Mount Samson Road, which is something that I have raised with Councils Operations Manager. Crews were deployed to drive the entire stretch of this road and fill the dangerous potholes with cold mix as soon as was

possible. Patching trucks were made a priority once the rain stopped and the road dried out. Given the large amount of feedback I received from residents, I sought a briefing on what works were planned along Mount Samson Road soon. I can advise the following are the projects we currently have in the system for Mount Samson Road: • 1.1km of road resurface between No. 307 to Kobble Creek Road Armstrong Creek. This project is in progress now. The project has been slightly delayed due to the weather and contractor availability; however, the project will be completed with a final 10mm seal applied. • There is 2.895km of road resurface between Old Mount Samson Road and Marshall Lane Closeburn, with works currently programmed to commence in June 2022. • 144m of road rehabilitation between 1876 Mt Samson Road and 1894 Mt Samson Road Yugar, programmed to be commence in June 2022. • 825m of road rehabilitation between Juffs Road and the bridge at North Pine River Dayboro, programmed for completion in the 22/23 FY. • 1.378km of road resurface between Kobble Creek Road to 160m South Postmans Track, programmed for completion in the 23/24 FY. All these project timelines are of course subject to favourable weather and may experience some delays. The intersection upgrade at Mount Samson Road/Postmans Track/Kobble Creek Road is still yet to be completed, with a 50mm asphalt surface to be applied to finish off the works. Council is awaiting details of a re-designed guardrail from the contractor, that residents reported was blocking the line of sight. Once this issue is resolved, the final asphalt surface will be applied. As you can see there is an extensive amount of works and a large investment of funds budgeted to improve the surface of Mount Samson Road. I will keep the community updated with project notices as each project is about to commence. When you are dealing with Council staff members during weather events such as we have experienced, please be patient and remember that Council maintenance crews and staff are working shifts 24/7 with many of their homes and families also being impacted. GET INVOLVED SAMFORD HEALTH AND WELLBEING SUPPORT Under the umbrella of Samford Lions A LITTLE KINDNESS The best portion of a good man’s life is his little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and love. (William Wordsworth) On June 17 at 2.00pm, Lucie Verhelst, known well for her quiet community spirit and her talent as a fibre artist, is launching Crafting Kindness. Lucie has based her initiative on Anne Herbert’s “Random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty” where people are encouraged to do something kind, unexpected and unsung to cheer others. You are invited to the SCHUB to create small gifts, crochet beanies and kindness rugs, to knit nests for injured birds or jumpers for children, sew wildlife pouches or kids PJs, create cards and write anonymous messages of praise or thanks. We can share our skills as we connect, so even if you aren’t artistic or wordy, come along.

Shayne Day OSTEOPATH B.App.Sci (Osteopathy)

Already there have been “asks”: rugs of love for care packages for DETAIL, beanies for the homeless and victims of domestic violence through Lions Samford CCC, clothing for children who need to be evacuated from remote Northern Territory communities to Darwin hospital for treatment - and there are lovely locals who would get a huge lift out of a nice surprise.

The program will run on the third Friday of each month at the SCHUB as part of the regular weekly Cuppa and Chat. If you have time or anything to help the program, we would love to welcome you to Friday Afternoon at the SCHUB, most Fridays starting at 2.00pm. Kindness helps build self-esteem, empathy and compassion, and improves mood. It can increase your sense of connectivity with others, much needed in our rough and tumble world. Be kind to yourself too with positive self-talk and by practicing gratitude. People who give of themselves in a balanced way tend to be healthier.

DAYBORO SHOW IS BACK - 2ND & 3RD JULY THE BEST LITTLE COUNTRY SHOW IS BACK THIS JULY! The annual Dayboro Show is back! Celebrating 65 years of the “Best little country show”, the 2022 event from 2 – 3 July will include a bit of boot scootin’, horse whispering, wood-chopping and farmtastic fun. Dayboro Show Spokesperson, Adam Tokely, said the show provides an exciting and affordable day for the whole family. “For just $35, the entire family can enjoy a fun-filled day with numerous free kids’ activities such as the animal nursery, rock-climbing, puppet shows, a farm animal display, mini bouncy rodeo, reptile and wildlife shows, a circus stunt show, sand sculpting workshops and even free passports for the kids to tick all activities off their list!” said Adam. “On top of that we’ve got all the favourites back including horse events and showjumping, poultry

show, miniature goat show, mini trotters, a sideshow alley with rides and show bags, wood chopping, fireworks, live music, food trucks, a bar and more!” Third time’s a charm for this genuine country show, forced to cancel the previous two events due to COVID-19 restrictions. 2022 is shaping up to be better than ever, with more than 3000 people expected to attend, 50 trade and exhibitors and the

iconic Sam Handford performing his muchloved horse entertainment. The first show was held in 1956 as a way of raising funds to pay for the showgrounds land. It was a huge success with more than 1000 people attending the one-day event. The membership fee was one guinea ($2.10) and admission was 25 cents. “It’s hugely exciting to celebrate the milestone of 65 years, especially after the previous two shows were cancelled due to COVID. This show is an important part of our community and we welcome everyone to come and join in the fun,” said Adam. What you Need to Know Dog Show: Friday 1st July. OUT & ABOUT Last week was National Volunteer week. Thank you to all those who freely give their time, skills, knowledge and other services to support others. Volunteering is an invaluable service without which few groups would survive. Volunteering Qld has a Volunteer Replacement Cost Calculator. One example of an individual 65 years and over volunteering 15 hours per week show their annual replacement cost would be $29,055.00. The replacement cost of a volunteer is calculated using the average hourly part-time wage of a person of their age in their State of residence, plus 15% employer on-costs (inclusive of superannuation, payroll tax and administration expenses). The weather has kept the Library in low profile, with books and water incompatible unless for creative purposes! Cartons in storage sheds have been losing their structural strength with the continued high level of moisture below and high humidity around and about. The solution is nearly to hand.

including pickleball courts. This Friday afternoon session is just $9 and is limited to 12 players to ensure plenty of point play, all while being co-ordinated by head coach Zak Davidson. “This session has been a great introduction for new players and has encouraged all of the kids to take up regular lessons to help improve their skills. The combination of group lessons and point play each week has really accelerated their tennis and it’s great to see them all so keen and excited to play each week,” said Zak. Players are guided through the scoring and rules of tennis, as well as a high standard of sportsman like conduct. “It’s the perfect steppingstone for junior weekend fixtures and it’s something that was definitely missing in my weekly tennis schedule when I was younger,” added Zak. LOCAL NEWS MENTAL HEALTH IMPACT SOARS An interim report of the 2022 Brisbane Flight Path Community Alliance (BFPCA) Community Survey of households affected by new flight paths has been released. It indicates the shocking extent of mental health impacts on the community as a result of the ongoing aircraft noise pollution. In addition, the data confirms Noise Improvement Trials being run by Airservices since February 2022 provide no respite. The survey was sent out to or accessed by residents across approximately 140 suburbs including Samford, who are living under or near Brisbane airport flight paths, asking them about the extent of the impact of aircraft noise on their lives. The survey also asked whether there had been any noticeable improvement since the commencement of the trails to extend ‘over the bay operations’ on Saturday and Sunday mornings by two hours (commencing 24/02/2022) and reducing ‘intersection departures’ (commencing 30/03/2022). As we go to press the survey has received 1600 responses and to date, a whopping 95% of respondents across 37 Brisbane postcodes said they are impacted by flight

path noise in their living and sleeping quarters, and 75% experienced mental distress related to aircraft noise. “More than 88% of respondents so far have indicated that their sleep is disturbed by aircraft noise. We all know the importance of healthy sleeping patterns when it comes to mental health. Clearly this level of impact on Brisbane residents is totally unacceptable and is strong evidence of the need for a curfew – similar to the one at Sydney airport,” said BFPCA Chairperson, David Diamond.

“I used the airport, but only once or twice a year and I’d heard about the new runway. But surely if the plan was to fundamentally change the flight paths and to route 145 planes a day over Samford and Samford Valley I’d have been told. But I hadn’t, and neither had anyone else,” he said. David Diamond added, “Neither Airservices nor Brisbane Airport Corporation have undertaken any comparable assessment of community impact since the new runway was opened on 12 July 2020.” “I have to close the windows to watch TV, and those peaceful moments having a morning coffee or an evening beer or wine on the deck are now often blighted by a procession of jets in or out of the airport,” said Simon. The survey is open until the end of July. Head to: https://bfpca.org.au/survey2022/ You can hear updates about this report and how local community members are raising their concerns, at the monthly SDPPA meeting. Details on Page 2.

Simon, a local Samford Valley resident, said he has been caught completely off guard by the frequency and incredible noise of flights directly over his home day and night.

Samford Area Mens Shed SAMS IS 10! A wise scholar once said: “All the projects and plans of Man, from levelling the tallest mountains to gouging out the deepest valleys all come to naught if Mother Nature has decided otherwise”. At Samford Area Men’s Shed (aka SAMS) these wise words came to mind earlier on in the month of May. The men at SAMS had been planning for months to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the founding of Samford Area Men’s Shed on Sunday 15th May. There were serious decision making meetings, arts and crafts to prepare and a list of important guests to invite to help celebrate the great event. The men had spruced up the Shed and themselves and all was set up and ready to go. However, Mother Nature had other plans! By the middle of the week prior to the celebrations, it became quite clear to all involved that all the planning was not going to plan. The heavens had opened up and a Biblical-like deluge had soaked, not only all of Brisbane, but especially the grounds around the Shed. It was decided that the 10th anniversary celebrations should be

scaled down and held inside the Shed at the next Tuesday morning meeting. And so it was! The men at SAMS weren’t going to let something such as the soaking of SouthEast Queensland stop them celebrating and sharing friendship, fellowship, coffee and cake! The Tuesday morning “talk-fest” turned out to be a great success, enjoyed by all. Men of Samford and surrounds, why not come along and meet the men of SAMS. Just come to the far end of Showgrounds Drive, Highvale on a Tuesday morning at about 9am - just near the high voltage power tower. OUT & ABOUT SAMFORD AND SURROUNDS ART AND STUDIOS TRAILS STARTS 4 JUNE The Art Trails is so close now, commencing from 4 June – 22 June. The artists are getting their studios and venues ready to welcome everyone to the 8th Trails event where you get to experience so much local talent on offer across the region. With all the rain we have had, our beautiful Valley and surrounds is looking lush and green. The perfect backdrop for a drive around to visit the 27 studios with 45 artists participating over the four weekends in June. The book and map for the Trails was beautifully put together by Print Editions, Stella Danalis and Jon Linkins. They are two of our Trails artists. A copy of the book is available at The Slab Hut in John Scott Park, Samford Village, or you can view it on the Creative Samford website as a flip book, as well as at the artists’ studios.

Many of the local cafes and restaurants in Samford and Dayboro will be open on the weekends and we thank those who support us. Once again, we thank our wonderful sponsors who support our group and the Trails: Community Bank Samford, A Place to Create, Eckersleys, Moreton Bay Regional Council, KwikKopy and Nikki Boyd MP. See you on the Trails. www.creativesamford.com Facebook: @ creativesamford

UPCOMING EVENTS The Hall is a community hall, so events hosted by the Hall aim to bring the community together, its motto being ‘A Hall for All: All for the Hall’. The website is a useful ‘go to’ place to learn more about the Hall, to check out the calendar and to send in information if you’re interested in hiring the Hall. The Cedar Creek Public Hall, Closeburn fb page can keep you updated week by week, with an active ‘Events’ page. Friday 27th May: TGIF (Thank Goodness It’s Friday) family picnic BBQ, 5pm to 7pm. If dry, bring your picnic rugs, and if soggy there is a cosy welcome in the undercroft of the Hall. Sausage sizzle and soft drinks available. A chance to catch up with old friends and make new ones. Page 24 - THE VILLAGE PUMP 27 MAY 2022

Sunday, 12th June: Resurrecting the Welcome to Winter Soup Day, midday until 6pm. As in yesteryear, this is both a community and fundraising event. This relies on the generosity of the community. Donations of soup: pumpkin, minestrone and pea and ham (no bones!) and desserts. Local musicians will play at both events, and games for the kids will be available. If you’re interested in volunteering to play, get in touch: cedarcreekhall4520@gmail.com Details of both events are on the Hall’s website https://cedarcreekpublichall.org. au and fb page/Events. iPlan CASE STUDY: PETER & JUDY Philip and Jacqui are 60 years old, retired and require $100,000 pa to live on and had been living comfortably on the interest from their $2M in the bank. That was up until recently when interest rates dropped through the floor and with Term Deposits around 0.5% at best, they are now significantly eating into their capital every month. They decided to chat to a financial adviser to discuss what their options are.

The first thing discussed was what type of lifestyle they want now and in future. Secondly, what level of risk they are prepared to take with their funds. They knew exactly what type of lifestyle they wanted however, were unsure what was meant by ‘type of Risk’ – no Risk if possible…? Risk & Return was explained and how they are inextricably linked.

Several options were presented, summarised below: Option 1 - Defensive. Funds invested in a Big 4 Banks in Term Deposits. 0% Exposure to Growth Assets. Predicted outcome..... Option 2 - Conservative. Funds are invested with 30% exposure to Growth Assets. Predicted outcome..... Option 3 - Moderate. Funds are invested with a 50% exposure to Growth Assets. Predicted outcome..... Option 4 - Balanced. Funds are invested with a 70% exposure to Growth Assets. Predicted outcome.....

Given their situation they decided on Option 3 being middle of the road, showing their funds lasting well past life expectancy drawing $100kpa all that time. They considered not investing everything initially, preferring to test the waters to begin with. The next question they had was ‘where could they find quality investment managers that can help deliver on the above’… I am glad they asked.
